[Q] Hardware required for Android Market access? - General Questions and Answers

I know there are certain requirements such as having a 3G radio and camera that google requires for market access. At least, that's what I've read. My question is how are things like the wifi only Galaxy Tab going to access it? Is it going to be packing a 3G radio, but just not activated sort of like how the FM radio shipped in the nexus but wasnt activated out of the box?
I am exploring this question because NOOKcolor is launching this month and runs a skin on top of android2.1. I'm hoping it gets rooted with cyanogen on it because that would be awesome on a $250 tablet. But the question remains...would it be able to access the market? Can the 'hardware requirements' be bypassed by any means on a rooted device?
TIA

Lots of devices run android and don't have a 3g radio and only wifi. They're mostly mp3 players but they can access the market as far as I've seen. It should be possible for the NOOKcolor to be able to reach the market. I don't know for sure though, I've been wrong before.
Sent from my nonsensikal froyo using XDA App

interesting

To access Market there is no hardware requirement. You just need a few apks. And internet connection.

[Q] Need help with tethering MyTouch 3G GPS to Gtab?

Hello,
Thanks to all the great folks here on this forum I have modded my Gtab and I am really loving the experience.
I am currently running TnT Lite 2.4 and find it very stable. I did the Market fix that allows most os the apps to show up. Still using the old Market interface which accurately shows my downloaded and purchased apps. I have installed ADWlauncher EX and not looked back.
Since buying my Gtab I have rooted my MyTouch 3g 1.2 and implemented Barnacle to create an ad hoc wifi hotspot that works very well with my Gtab.
I read somewhere here that somebody was able to connect their phone GPS to the Gtab through the use of a combination of shareGPS and BlueGPS. I can't seem to find the shareGPS application anywhere on the Market with my phone or the Gtab. Is this due to the fact that my phone is still an Android 1.6 phone? If possible can someone point me to the sharegps apk file that would work on my phone?

[Q] Motorola Citrus Android 2.1

I have a Motorola citrus trying to get to wifi tether I think I got it rooted with superuser and downloaded wifi tether from market but the phones power cycles when i try to tether. Can anyone help me?
I just tried and had the same result as the original poster, looking for answers I found nothing. Though I did find this post so, BUMP for an answer please.
tethering on 2.1 citrus
I had the same result as above.
I successfully rooted with z4root
tried both
wireless tether for root
and
wifi tethering mesh
Same results, as soon as you start the tethering process, phone restarts..
side note: I know I am rooted as these apps only run if so, i've tried it..
anyone find a hack for running a few apps like 'mint' that are not available in market on the citrus.. even though 'mint' and my local banks app runs on android 1.6 and up
motorola support says the citrus only runs apk files, yet I found a work around to run java apps, just not 'mint' or my banks app runs
this is kind of like bait and switch, the citrus was advertised as being android 2.1 yet its a rather limited version.. its like fedora linux calling itself redhat linux although its based on redhat it isnt..
found one
'Barnacle Wifi Tether' from market worked on my citrus, i'll find out when i get my bill if its good or not regarding the tethering fees. but it worked in a 1 minute short test..
I came across some reviews which reminded me(on of all reviews one person with tmobile was charged):
so i would like to remind people some basics of tethering
1. dont do computer operating system updates on tether
2. dont download torrents or do filesharing on tether
3. dont use a extreme amount of data..
that said I would recommend using a firewall on you computer to block any applcations that might do any of above, and use it when your tethering...

[Q] Any apps to play online games over 3g

I would like to know if there are any apps (rooted or not) that would allow my phone to receive wifi from my mobile A.P. on the same phone. Mobile ap right now disables wifi but was reading about the wifi tether aps and may have the wrong idea about how they work but gave me the idea that could do what i need. I have a Samsung showcase through element mobile in north central WI. Firmware ver. 2.2.1 hardware ver I500.04 model sch-I500 kernel ver 2.6.32.9. I know the connection would most likely be laggy but would just like to see if it is possible. Any ideas please post. If there is nothing out there would make a great challenge for the developers to create
Huh? I guess not. bump

[Q] Tethering and Video Calls on Samsung Focus Flash

So I live in Mexico and just bought a Focus Flash...
I tried to use it as a hotspot but I couldn't... My carrier supports tethering and it uses the same bands as at&t...
When I try to use the internet sharing options it shows a message saying that I have to call at&t...
Does anyone knows how to make this option work outside of the US?
Also, I have a similar problem when I try to use the samsung's video call app.
It shows a message saying my device isn't supported, is this also because I'm using it with a different carrier?
I hope someone can help, thanks! =)
If I can't find a solution for this, I'll probably start looking for roms from different countries to see if flashing it helps.
I don't know about the video call app. As for the other, however...
First of all, if you're using an AT&T ROM (which it sounds like you are) and you can find a way to flash an "International" ROM to it, I'd suggest you do that. AT&T puts a lot of restrictions on their phones that you, as a non-customer, have no reason to put up with (personally, I don't see any reason for their customers to put up with it either, but that's another issue).
Beyond that, if by some lucky chance your current firmware is compatible with WindowBreak, or at least you have a backup with old enough firmware, then yes, it is possible to strip out all of the limitations on the "Internet Sharing" feature. For one example, search the Dev&Hacking sub-forum for "Interop Unlock + Internet Sharing".
Beyond that... you'll either need to exchange your phone, find some other way around the problem (for example, you should be able to use wired tethering; it's unofficial but available for most if not all Windows phones if you know where to look), or wait until we find new hacks. Any of the following would work: a way to interop-unlock gen2 Samsung phones with current firmware (install WP7 Root Tools and use a provxml processing app), a way to flash a stock ROM to gen2 Samsungs (either replace your current ROM with an international one, or downgrade it to one that is compatible with WindowBreak), or a way to flash custom ROMs (which all come with this feature fully enabled).

Well... it was HAAARD D:
But I finally got to tango with tethering and it seems that I'll be able to get the last firmware update as well =D
So it is all good... I'm still using the at&t rom
I don't have video calls but I don't think I need them that much... If I want to have videochat I'll just use skype =)
Thanks for your answer, man =)

[CAR AUDIO] XTRONS TD620A - 6.2” Android HD w/ Multi-touch

Just bought and installed this 2-DIN headunit! So awesome to finally have Android in the dash. So far it seems great.
LIKES:
Multi-touch is a nice touch
Able to install my own apks without connecting to the Play Store
Finally get to use Live Wallpapers without worrying about battery drain
Customizability
Built in fan
DISLIKES:
Start up time kinda sucks
Wifi seems to trip out when downloading via phone tether
Ipod icon in the dock (how clueless is that?? Android and Apple aren't friends)
*Actually to be honest, I kinda understand it. A lot of people use their ipods/iphones to listen to their music. My major gripe about this though is that- I CAN'T GET RID OF IT! I don't want an Ipod app on my Android. I would like to figure out how to get rid of it. I'd much rather put my bluetooth icon in the doc.
So far I've installed Skype, Space Colony Live Wallpaper, Maps With Me, and RecForge Lite. I haven't tried TB or Root Explorer yet, as I don't have root access (yet!). It comes preinstalled with Gmail, Email, Angry Birds Rio, Radio (the FM Radio app), EZ File Explorer and several other apps. It runs really smooth for the most part.
Anyone else have this unit yet? Anyone tried rooting it yet? Please share your experience in this thread.
Just for reference, the stock system versions are as follows:
CPU Information
Freescale i.MX53
RAM Information
512M DDR3 800
Android Version
2.3.7
MCU Version
2.10.9-1-10-1
System Version
2.20.21
DVD Version
2.13.11-1200wb
What is interesting is I was able to access my root directory and files without rooting my device. However, when I checked with Root Checker Basic, it said my device was not rooted. And I'm unable to mount R/W. I was able to copy the system/app folder with no problem though. Is this typical of non-rooted devices?

So far I'm pretty happy with it. The start-up time is a little slow, but other than that, it does pretty much everything I want it to do. I was able to install a different launcher that's more customizable and more to my taste. I've been able to connect to internet and Gmail and the playstore without any problem. I haven't had any problem installing apps (except for when I was intentionally trying to install apps that I knew wouldn't work... ie. Samsung apps). No major complaints. Overall a great purchase!

When you say start up time, do you need to shut the device off when u leave the car, or can you put it in stand by mode?

Yup, it shuts down everytime you take the key out of the ignition. There is no standby or hibernate mode.
I just purchased this unit off Newegg and I'm really looking forward to seeing what it can do. I was curious if you ever got root access worked out? I would love to see this get some more attention from devs and really show what android in-dash is capable of!

Got mine installed few days ago. So far so good. Boot time is around 45sec, not a really big problem for me as i do drive more then one min every trip. The default audio player sucks. The unit always runs the default player automatically at the beginning. Every time you have to stop the music b4 you switch to other player. Kinda annoying.
question
I bought the same model XTRONS. I have a question I have downloaded the launcher? Is there any other Bluetooth dial? Because the original is dramatic.
