[Q] The mysterious case of the "invisible" SD card - General Questions and Answers

Smartphone Newman N1 with lingfude ICS custom ROM.
I extended the userdata partition following this guide. Unfortunately, after flashing the phone wasn't able to property start Android anymore (but I was able to start in Recovery Mode).
So I have re-installed the ROM (factory reset and wipe all the data) and now the phone it's OK, except for the SD card. It seems like I have no SD card at all.
Some facts:
The SD is OK. I tested it on both PC and on a different smartphone, no problem at all.
The SD is correctly formatted FAT32 (no multiple partitions).
In Recovery Mode I can still access to the SD card . I can mount/unmount it, I can even install software from it in Recovery Mode.
I think the problem is related to the extension of the userdata partition but I'm not sure.
Any ideas?

[Q] Wiping my SD card/formatting solution.

Hi
Just wondered how i completely wipe all my data from this disk?
I can boot into clockworkmod restore factory defaults and clear cache. I just need to know how to wipe the SD card.
Trying to revert the phone to the beginning.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA App
Settings/ sd card/ unmount sd/ format sd card!...
Sent from my HTC Vision
This worked to some degree.
Once I unmounted it and erased the SD card I couldn't mount or format the card again :/. Nothing I did worked.
I tried formatting my SD card when connecting the phone to my windows laptop but couldn't do it either.
I have clockworkmod installed on my phone and think I have found a solution.
Keep your phone connected to your laptop. If you reboot into recovery on your phone and go to "mounts and storage menu", then "mount USB storage". On your windows platform it should popup something like "need to format this drive before you can access it". so I formatted the drive, fat32, allocated unit size 32kb, check "quick format". Start.
once it's done in windows, select in clockworkmod "format /sdcard" and then "mount /sdcard" and reboot.
It should work.
In case this helps you along the way - this program seems to come recommended for formatting SD cards.

I tried that a couple of days ago. Formatted my new 32GB microsdhc card fine. But XP Pro (with SP3) couldn't see it on my desktop so couldn't drop all my data onto it. In the end I formatted the card with my Nokia E71, mounted it as a 'disk' on the PC and all was fine.
(Didn't do it on the DHD 'cos I didn't want to tie it up for 7 hours copying all my music across)!

If your PC environment is Windows based, you may want to think about using SyncBack Freeware. It will ensure that every file has been moved. I've been using this to move large folders/directories for many years.

[Q] Internal SD-card (USB-Storage) won't mount when Android boots, only ext-sd

Hello,
Internal SD-card (USB-Storage) won't automatically mount itself when Android starts. It only mounts my external SD-Card. In CWM i can access everything (internal sd, external sd, system etc.) i can format them also. when i connect my phone to the pc i can read and write to both SD-Cards. Everything seems fine, but when android boots (with my ext sd inserted), i enter my pin, and my homescreen appears. Everything is ok but only my external sd is mounted, not my internal (USB-Storage). But when i boot without the external-sd inserted it mounts my internal-sd without problems. Weird. When i insert my ext-sd (phone is running) after my int-sd got mounted, it also mounts my ext-sd. What´s the reason for this behavior? Does anybody know how to fix it? can´t be a format (rfs/ext4 or FAT like) problem i think, but maybe i am wrong.
My Phone is:
Samsung Galaxy S i9000 running
CyanogenMod 10.1 / cm-10.1-20130111-NIGHTLY-galaxysmtd.zip (Stock CM-Kernel, also used semaphore jb 1.9.3)
Maybe someone has an idea how to fix this problem. I´d really appreciate any help.
Greetings,
Strainhunter
fixes, i think^^
I think i fixed the problem.
I copied all the files on my external sd (yes, the problem with the internal sd (usb-storage not mounting was the external sd )
then i formated emmc in CWM--rebooted--> and the copied the files back to the ext-sd. Till now i rebooted the device multiple times and both sd´s are mounting fine^^
Thanks to me^^

Update: Problem came back -> got fixed
Hello Again,
After recently the problem came back, i experimented a little and found out that the problem did go away when i made my nandroid backups in tar format, but came back when i made them i dup format. I think it was the big "blobs"-folder on my ext-sd that caused it.
Just wanted to update this thread, because if someone encountered this problem too, he maybe want to have a look at his Nandoid-backup-format.

[Q] SD card won't mount - Have I bricked it?

Hi guys.
Almost total noob here - not quite, but still.
I have a Pico/Explorer.
I rooted, flashed CWM 5.05, then a MIUI ROM.. all worked well. Then I wanted to try the new Triumph HD ROM. Initiall install was succesful.
I partitioned my SD card with 1024 ext3 and a swap of 128Mb
Wiped, installed ROM, no problems.
I didn't see that int2ext was supported (by command line, apparently) so I tried installing mount2sd from the play store.
After enabling everything in that app, I rebooted.
Phone became stuck on lock screen.. would not respond to any touches or buttons. But the UI updated when the battery got low, made a noise on low battery etc, and the time was updated.
I booted into recovery to test the buttons, all work fine. I checked my partition log and it said various errors like could not find this or that mount point.
I partitioned again, this time is was extremely slow. I put the SD card into my mac to add the images, but it wasn't found.
Now when I partition it does it really quick - on inspecting the log, it says "err: /dev/block/mmcblk0 does not exist!"
I can't mount the /sdcard or the /sd-ext in recovery.
Have I f!cked my SD card or my device?
Thanks for any help.
Connect your sd-card to pc using card reader if it shows sd-card then ok
If it not show ur sd-card then run minitool partition wizard
And find the sd-card there and format it and delete the sd-ext partition and re-create it using recovery
And never use two memory script at one time
Before using the another memory script remove the previous one
sent from
little pico
Thanks dude.
When I plug it in with a USB card reader, the SD card doesn't show - in minitool or anywhere else at all.
I think it's dead. Will have to buy a new one.
I will be careful with overclocking in future
Thanks again.
Put your card in the phone and boot into recovery.. Then mounts/storage and try to mount usb storage when connected to pc.. If the mem card shows up in your pc then try putting the card in a non android phone and delete the partitions.. Even my sd card didn't show up in a card reader.. But it showed up when I used a non android phone..
Sent from my HTC Explorer A310e using xda premium
make sure your sd card is usable - connect it to PC and check if it is being read. If yes, then continue. If no, then replace it.
Backup your entire SD card.
Delete all partitions and make one single partition using the Minitool Partition Wizard. Once done, try partitioning with the Recovery. this way you can ensure max compatibility.
And btw, only use swap if you are using Swapper, and only if your ROM supports it. Not all ROM support swapping. I recommend you to set swap to 0, our Pico is capable enough to run flawlessly without swap.
Once done, Factory Reset, Wipe Cache, flash your rom again and after one reboot flash mounts2sd or int2ext. Never use two scripts at a time.
same problem
It happened only with Triumph ROM for me no matter what i do the doesn't mount when i connect via usb tethering to my pc..I had to reboot into recovery for the memory card to show up in the pc..Can any one help me on this?
I never installed any secondary memory script..Just flashed the latest Triumph version after a superwipe....
The memory card never shows up on the pc but only in recovery..
format using minitool partion
format using minitool partion it'll fix sd card errors

Sony Zperia Z3 Rooted - "Damaged SD card. SD card is damaged. try reformatting it."

Sony Z3 - SD Card Problem
I have a Sony Z3, rooted, with dual recovery (philz/twrp).
So every time I boot up is says "Damaged SD card. SD card is damaged. try reformatting it." I could still access all of my music that was on the card so i don't think it was really broken. But I formatted it any. But It still says exactly the same message and I am unable to mount it on the options, I cannot see it on the pc either.
The sd card is a sandisk extreme, which I have taken out and put into a nokia lumia to test and it works fine so the card is ok.
I am using this rom: "[Rom][5.1.1][D6603]Pre-Rooted + XZDR 2.8.21 [23.4.A.0.546] * Nordic *" / http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/general/rom-pre-rooted-xzdr-2-8-21-t3162851
I can't seem to access the recovery either It may be because those files were on the sd!
Anyone know what the hell is going on?
Well, I have completely restored the phone to factory settings, and still it cannot do anything with the card. i know it works on another phone so i might have to send the phone back
Flash SuperSU again... I had the same issue with dual recovery and SD Card, flashing SuperSU again solved my problem.
I've also moved the folder XDRecovery (or something like that) to the internal memory. Everything is working fine so far.
Have you tried fixing it from the recovery menu? I had the same issue and I formated the SD in my computer then, then in my phone (none of them worked) and lastly from the recovery menu and it seemed to work for me.
had the same issue...just reformatted on PC using hp disk format utility and uncheck quick format, set the format type to exFAT. THen insert into phone and it works fine...of course evrytime u reboot phone youll get the same error...just unmount the sd card and reinsert it while the phone is ON. it will work..seems like a bug to me...but dont worry ur sd card is fine.
For me re-installing the XZDualRecovery with the Windows installer fixed the issue!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/help/z3-sd-card-recognized-reboot-t3170817
i had this issue several times, i've just reflashed the XZDualRecovery to fix it... (no need to wipe anything)

sd card (in android phone) suddenly became RAW format - how to fix it ?

Hi,
The 32GB Samsung EVO in my AMOI N828 became suddenly RAW format (instead of fat32).
I have tried to get the most data out of it with EaseUS data recovery wizard ( and with a bunch of other programs too) but the SD card lost most of its data.
But even when i want to format it again, it says RAW format, so i tried to repartition it with MINITOOL Partition wizard but without any luck.
I cannot create a new partition like fat32, primary with default clustersize. When i click APPLY the program tries to create a partition but after a minute the programs seems to have created it but in fact the SD stays "unallocated". Therefore i cannot format it either.
I have tried in win7 via CMD, diskpart, list disk, select disk, clean (gave error) , create partition primary(gave error)....but nothing happens and there is always an error-log.
Also tried in diskmanagement to format but without succes ( because it is still in RAW format ofcourse)
So, i have tried almost anything but nothing works.
Has anyone another fix perhaps ? Or is my SD a total loss ?
