[Q] Need help with some data issues - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So here is the deal, my sister has a Samsung Galaxy S III phone and of late Verizon is saying that she is using tons of data. She has even replaces the phone completely and still it is showing she is using tons of data. The data usage monitor is showing almost no data being used, ie 0.03mb data used and she has data limits setup etc. The new phone itself has nothing installed but default apps.
Is there something that could be causing this outside the phone and what can I have her look for to figure it out. I am sadly not nearby or I would do a full check myself.
I am sure I have not given enough info here, so do ask anything. I will do my best to supply info as needed.
(Edit)Just got the info on the data usage, it shows almost nothing for most of the time then twice it shows downloads of over 500mb.

[Q] Media Storage Excessive Data Download

Hi,
Over the last few days I've noticed a significant spike in my data transfer despite the fact that I was not using my phone.
Over the past few hours alone my phone has downloaded over 160 MB of data. I used the app "My Data Manager" to determine that "Media Storage" is the culprit behind the excessive transfer of data.
As this isn't an app I can simply remove, does anyone know how I go about fixing this issue?
Thanks in advance.
So last night I wiped my sd card and reset my phone to factory settings to see if it would resolve the issue.
No luck...I just got a notification from my provider that I've now used 90% of my data transfer for this month.
My phone still seems to be downloading 50MB at a time, periodically throughout the day.
Has anyone else had problems like this? Any suggestions how to fix the issue? I really like the custom ROM I'm using but have the feeling I might need to find a different one.
Note: This is on a Google branded HTC Magic 32B running the T-Mobile myTouch 3G OTA Froyo 2.2.1 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848791).

droid x2 root issues

I posted this in another thread but want to get as immediate of a response as possible so i am posting it here...
I recently bought droid x2 from my friend to replace my previous phone which i dropped, the screen broke so its busted.
It wasn't until I went to the verizon store, and activated my phone that I was told that it was rooted. It is fully functional (it is active, receives texts, calls, has wifi, apps, everything works) but I cannot update the software OTA and do not have access to my data network. So the only time I can really access the internet or do anything productive is if I have a wifi connection. And overall, the phone just functions pretty slow. I have had a blinking grey triangle in the top right corner of the screen, which I assume means that my data is roaming and thus have no access to it.
So basically I tried taking it to a repair store and they suggested that instead of paying 150+ dollars to have my old phone's screen repaired, that I post on here for help to see if I can restore this phone to its original software. I have tried doing the factory reset and in the store, they went through the restore process but it didn't change anything with my lack of access to data. I want to know if there is anything I can do to fix this issue (preferably on a macbook) or if I should just pay the money to have my old phone's screen fixed.
So does anyone know how to fix this? I want to unroot the phone or restore it so the software is the orginal as verizon provided it... if you need more information about my problem let me know and I can try to give more details

lgl164vl unlock factory reset protection i am asking how to do it

i purchased this phone lgl164vl from a person i cannot get a hold of anymore and did factory reset now i cannot use it because i donot know old google account. how can i make this phone useable for me?
Factory reset without Google account
I will attempt to give ya advice on this. I have just recently purchased this device too lgl164vl, ie fiesta 2 lte, and from it's quick start guide I will be quoting from it says...
Under anti-theft guide
add your google account on your device
"After your device is protected, you'll need to either unlock or enter your Google account password if you need to do a factory reset. This ensures that you or someone you trust is doing the reset."
(Note) "DO NOT forget your Google account and password you had added to your device prior to performing a factory reset. If you can't provide the account information during the setup.process, you won't be able to use the device AT ALL after performing the factory reset."
Really sorry to give you such troubling news, and let's hope the screen lock and account wasn't set up for anti theft by previous owner, for if the anti theft was activated and you can't get ahold of the original owner I'm afraid you have been screwed. For everything is saved to Google's cloud on that one account it was setup with, and as far as I'm aware, at least until a custom recovery is made for this device, it's more or less bricked (as you can't use it.)
Hopefully this isn't the case and perhaps it's a network issue on which I have no advice.
thanks for the reply

maybe some one might come up with something i hope. is there anything that could be put on sd card then put sd card in phone and when phone is turned on sd card takes control? by putting some type of application on phone to take care of this
lol, good one
these tracfone things are really tight; they don't want you to keep using it without the tracfone service, like if you root it to switch to some other service
pretty much a throwaway or you might be able to use it without phone, just wifi
sorry no info; i was hoping for more info myself.
.
I'm trying to discover if the sd card can be configured as internal storage or not. Some providers disable this feature. The system says 'the card SHOULD be used as portable storage' and does not give the option to use it as internal storage (so I can expand my download capacity for pandora).
So, hopefully I can get an answer here: can I buy a faster card that the phone will be able to use as internal storage or is it really locked out regardless? I don't want to waste money on a card I don't need.
How fast should the card be? What rating? I believe it is at least class 10. (it is UHS-I/U3 Class 10)
Is it possible to 'force' the phone to use it as internal storage using ADB? (i read about this somewhere)
if so, please howto, thanks
{figured no need for new thread, don't expect it to work out, stupid tracfones, lol} ... i can do a new thread if you think i should, if there is positive info, thanks
update:
i managed to get the 'auto-install sdcard internal' program to work.. aftiss (https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/auto-formatting-sdcard-to-internal-t3583875)
seems to be doing ok so far; i migrated the data over to the sd card, it says it will start using the sd card as default app data and storage/downloads etc. But it did not say it uses the sdcard for app binaries.
The goal for me here is to get Pandora to use the sdcard to download the music with the Prime subscription for offline play, as I have tracfone and not an unlimited data plan.
It seems like it should work just fine, as music is not nearly as demanding as video, less bandwidth, about 192kBps, i think. (or maybe small b? yes, small b, like Kbps). So, really even an older sdcard should be able to do it.
With the premium (not prime) service from pandora you get your 4 most listened to channels downloaded automatically. The difference is $5/month vs $10/month.
The Prime lets you do playlists and individual songs. You have a 'my music' button to add to your offline cache. I suppose there is an automatic download as well. They say they will leave 500mb free at all times.
I suppose it may be inappropriate to talk about a pay service here, idk.

Hey were you still running that LG phone really well?
I have a friend with one and I am trying to help him keep it up to date without rooting until later this year.

i wound up ditching Pandora, sometimes a song will play with choppy sound, like cylon music, unacceptable
i reset the phone to factory specs and it works fine. It had a problem charging with the modifications. I tried a few different launchers and always had problems. It seems like it may have some protection against modifications, even as simple as using an alternative launcher. Even with the phone turned off it wouldn't charge.
However, I did discover the charger I was using has connection problems, or maybe the phone does. It is doing ok right now using a cable direct to computer.
The information I found regarding using the memory card as extended internal storage for apps is that Android no longer enables that option because it is unreliable. Perhaps it uses too much energy, i do not know. So, I'm going with stock for now. I disable all the google stuff I can and use f-droid, mainly.
It is a 'good' phone, but I'm still probably going to get a new one when the activation time runs out, rather than paying for another year of service. Possibly one could go month to month till a new phone is issued that is good enough to justify an upgrade. But even a new one of these is cheaper than another year of service and minutes.
How do you root the lgl164vl 7.0 ? Can it be done with no pc? I tried kingo root but stops at 90%
nope, it is trash; don't bother

Need EXPERT help

Hey So im new to the comunity and i reached out to this site before because, I was almost 100% sure my phone was Hacked. I shared a few screens and someone told me to factory reset. before resetting i tried to backup my photos and everything i could to the online drives i could back up some and others i couldnt i noticed the file names for pretty much everything was in a folder called
/storage/emulated/0/.face/ .revitalimage
so i factory reset just to find out that all my backups were deleted/
i have many folders i cant access and when it says optimizing apps right after the reset i still somehow had 900+ apps right off no sign in or anything
i took these screens to see if anyone can help me
my data usage is through the roof and my ram is always running like 98 processes, and wont close most.
i dont know if verizon phones are always unlocked but my phone has been unlocked ive tried rooting but it wont even let me do that.
Malwarefox doesnt find anything .
and when i look up Half the files in the pictures i cant find anything ..
Thank you in Advance Kyle
What really is your issue? What do you mean with "data usage is through the roof"? The amout of Cellular Data Usage?
BTW: Unused RAM is wasted RAM.
FYI: Android kicks off apps when RAM goes low. CPU throttles speed automatically when its temparature goes too high.

Like I said after I reset it still had thousands of apps on here that are unacccessible it encrypts my photo so I can't save them myself and or transfer them I can't view any of my installed apps app data I'm unable to use my Bluetooth tethering and/or hotspot when I try to activate it and just automatically closes I completely turned off all of the background data usage for pretty much everything on my phone and it's still just consumed whether I'm on Wi-Fi or not

Phone downloaded apps by itself, even without data enabled.

Hi all.
I have searched quite a bit and have found no answer to this problem yet.
So the phone is fresh from factory reset. Phone is pre-owned. Never connected to any wifi network and the wifi always remained off. Same goes with mobile data, never turned on. What's even more interesting is the sim is a prepaid simcard with no credits and no data. The simcard is intended to receive text and calls. (No cost to receive calls or sms). So data leak from that isn't possible either.
I have seen hidden downloaders from carrier that downloads bloatware by itself before. But this is the first time I've ever seen it self download apps without any data connection.
The built-in data usage counter still shows 0. The phone has never connected to anything. But now several bloatware apps just showed up. And those apps do work and storage used has increased. I noticed this around 24 hours after the reset.
Can someone please explain what is going on?
Do phones have secret functions to access data undetected by wifi or carrier?
The phone manufacturer is a one of the major brands and probably the largest that don't have access to GMS.

Some devices have system apps that can be "uninstall", but they don't actually uninstall completely because the uninstalled apps are stored in a hidden partition. But, once uninstalled, if the device is factory reset, the apps automatically reinstall themselves from the hidden partition, similar to when resetting a PC to factory defaults. I had a tablet that would do this, the apps were definitely uninstalled but would reinstall from the hidden partition when I would factory reset the device, then I would have to uninstall those apps again. This would happen every time I did a factory reset.

Thanks for the answer.
Yes I understand that part of uninstall. But the difference here is those apps never returned fresh from factory reset. It returned hours after using the phone. The first few hours of using the phone, those apps doesn't exist, doesn't even show up on the free space count. It wasn't until the next day those apps appear.
I did suspect what you said too, but I can't explain why it waited at least 18-24 hours delay before installing itself and show up on the phone. If that was the case, it should have appeared right after the reset.

Yes, I considered that also. The only other thing I could imagine is that maybe you installed something and then whatever that was installed the additional apps.
Questions of a hidden Google mesh network come to mind after reading this. I guess it's theoretically possible via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth between devices. I don't know.
So after trying to gather more information.
I believe it is installed from some "hidden partition" by some hidden app installer.
The reason is.
1. No data of what so ever is connected.
2. The installed app version is old, as in few months before the official release.
What is intriguing is.
1. The delay before installing this app (and through an installer), rather than just install it fresh from reset.
2. It doesn't appear to be consuming and storage, as if this hidden partition cannot even be seen. Once the app appears, the storage usage increases.

I actually believe it is a thing. I vaguely remember that my brand new iPhone detected and recommended my current location region without even inserting a simcard or connecting to wifi yet. The kicker is, phone was purchased in another country that is separated by vast ocean and several time zones.
To this day I still can't figure out how did the iPhone know that. I suspect that the wifi routers broadcast more than just SSID to any device that is not connected. Or it could be from another iPhone. Maybe some similar bluetooth tech that predates "Airtag". This was about 3-4 years ago, likely it was the X.

Location is detetmined by more than just mobile data and Wi-Fi, it also uses the regular cellular part of the radio. The cellular part of the radio works even without an active SIM. That is why the emergency location and emergency call features work even without the device being activated on a network so that you can make emergency calls and your location can be tracked in emergency situations so that you can be found if you need help or rescue.
