App Ops eXtended is a launcher for the 4.3 AND 4.4 App Ops activity, as well as an installer for a more advanced version of App Ops with added features:
- search for apps
- filter out disabled apps
- sorting alphabetically
- batch grant/revoke OPs (permissions)
- ability to automatically deny permissions chosen by you on new app installs
- optional persistent notification to show revoked permissions for the current foreground app
App Ops X is a recompiled version of Android 4.3's App Ops which we've made available to Kit Kat now too.
We're going to improve on it and add new features, so please, if there's anything you'd like to see just let us know! Also if you have any problems with it, please send us a description along with your ROM. Thanks!

Can you add the option to take away ability from apps to connect to the internet, or to write to the USB storage, or to read the phone status and identity? That's what I would call extended app ops

Don't these apps work by listing ALL the permissions that an individual app can access ? So if it can't access the internet or GPS or or or it won't give the option to denied ?

App Ops lists some, not all permissions. Look at chrome, it doesn't say that it has any network permissions, neither write storage, but if you look at them in Settings->apps you can see it does.

Gotcha I never really looked at apps like chrome , I really only use it for games and shady apps downloaded from the internet . I agree finding a way to show all permissions would be great
Many thanks!! I was waiting for kit Kat version.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
Yep, working on the INTERNET permission right now. App Ops eXtended uses the same AppOpsManager as the native app, which doesn't support it, so it's a bit more work, but we're getting there!
Looks nice !
If I may, once App Ops X is installed, the button still says Install App Ops X Maybe you could change it to "Launch App Ops X"
That's done, along with a few other features:
- notification that shows revoked permissions to the current foreground app
- batch grant/revoke a permission to all apps that requested it at once
- rules - automatically disallow permissions of your choosing to newly installed apps (like READ CONTACTS)
Don't see wake lock option in X version
First thanks for make this great app available on Kitkat platform.
I'm not sure if the following bug might be related to my phone only:
When trying the Native AppOps, all works fine and I see the "wake lock" option.
However when I try the AppOps X, I'm unable to see the option for "wake lock". I had granted superuser access to the app and phone is rooted. I'm on Kitkat (Build from CM 11). Phone is a Samsung S2 I9100.
If nobody is having this issue, then I would guess it's something with my OS or phone.

This is cool! Can you also present the apps sorted by name ? The standard app ops show the apps in random order, so it's hard to find a specific app you are looking for, if it falls under a section with a lot of apps.

They are actually sorted so that the app which most recently used that OP is shown first. We'll try to add a sort option by the next version too though!

In App Ops X on the upper right side there's a "settings" button, and there on the unlocked version the first option is for turning off the notification. If you haven't unlocked (purchased) though and you see notifications from App Ops X then that's a bug which we'll try to fix ASAP.

There isn't any way through the AppOpsManager as of yet. Even so, the device ID now isn't as unique as it used to be, since it's software generated as opposed to hardware. I'm still looking into it to confirm that it's so, but the most of the internet tells that it is.
Hello.
You download an app, it gives you a big list of what permissions it wants, and you can either agree to it or not use the app...
Is there someway of limiting those permissions? Or provide fake permissions?
Like in most iphone apps you can choose if you want to allow gps, contacts, etc.
I am searching for an app thats will limit those permissions prior to installing it. Won't do me any good if I want to deny contacts access but I do it after its already taken it.
Cheers and thanks
P.S. I'm using a rooted LG G2 d802 with android 4.4.2
I don't think it's possible, even Google's last Play Store update doesn't reveal every single permission when you update stuff, dunno if this limitation affects it or no.
You can use "app ops" (search for it in google play). It is a hidden menu from android os. Obviously it works after installation (iOS works the same, you first install the app and later you decide which permission accept/deny).

FAQ
1. What is cleaned app?
Cleaned app is an original app loaded by wrapper. Granular permission management can be realized after cleaning. App cleaning will wrap the original app in your phone locally and reinstall the wrapped app so all access to privacy will be controlled. The wrapped app is exactly the same one as the original app, except it is loaded by the wrapper, so it is safe to use. The way we process an app is similar to Amazon. For cleaned version, autostart and background running can be disabled, and privacy access can be denied.
2. What permissions can be controlled after cleaning?
Granular app permissions includes autorun, background running, notifications, SMS sending, call making, SMS access, call log access, contact access, phone number acquisition, and location.
3. How to update an original app to cleaned version?
There are 3 ways to get app “cleaned”:
1) All apps downloaded from MoboClean are cleaned version.
2) Update apps downloaded from other markets to cleaned version through “Permission”>“App Manager”>“Original”
3) Set Cleaning Installer as default installer. Apps installed by Cleaning Installer are cleaned version as well.
4. Can cleaned apps update as usual?
Yes. Through two ways:
1) The most convenient way: Update through MoboClean
2) Install update APK through Cleaning Installer
5. Differences between cleaned app and the original app
Cleaned app is on the basis of the original app but with a wrapper. The wrapped app is exactly the same one as the original app, except it is loaded by the wrapper, so granular permission control can be realized.
Declaration: MoboClean will not gather or upload any of your private data.
6. Cleaned app is not pirated one and contains no virus!
App cleaning means adding a wrapper to the original app to have fine-grained permission control, which will cause signature change. Cleaned version may be recognized as pirated or unsafe by some security or market apps, please ignore it.
Thank you so much for your everlasting support!!
Remind: UU AppPurifier does not need to "root" your phone. It will wrapper the original apk locally, then re-install the app. After that, you can control the permission dynamically. Only apps you want to control need to be "purified". Your suggestions are welcome!
All comments are welcome!
Let us know what you request from our app. We’ll work hard on the improvements.

Hi uusafe,
I just found out that once I purified "Shazam Encore" (before first start), I'm not able to signon from Google or Facebook from inside of the Shazam app.
Is there a workaround for this to be released soon?
And...is there an option to remove purified app from the list? For it to become original app?
Many thanks

Sorry for the inconvenience. If you want to remove the purified app you can uninstall the purified one and install the original one. Furthermore, we will add an "un-purify" feature in recent version.
As for "Shazam Encore", we are testing on it. And we think it may because of the block from Google or Facebook to get corresponding information to sign. Purification of Facebook may solve this problem. We are testing on it and you can have a try if you want
Would like to ask something more about Shazam Encore.
1. What's the version of it
2. When did it need to signon? To share or to purchase or other condition?
Thanks for your prompt reply!
The Shazam Encore is just one of the apps that allows login via Google+ or Facebook. I believe in general (not only Shazam) purified apps unable to login with Google+ or Facebook. Some apps I need to login (either via Google+ or Facebook) because it can provide personal experience such as storing my favorite songs or publish my post on Facebook, etc.
FYI the Shazam Encore I downloaded as of today is the latest version ie. 5.3.3
Another example of app that failed to login(bind) via Facebook is this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mt.mtxx.mtxx&hl=en

You can turn on the auto-installer function(turn on it in menu->settings) which can simplify the procedure of purication greatly.
Purification should not cost that long What is the purification time for one app on average?
About the sign in part: Did you sign through Google+ or Facebook app?
BTW, we are working on solution for the login issue and will release it in a few weeks.

( 2 ) If I've Google+ app or Facebook app/client installed, then it will proceed to client to complete the sign-in. It will then popup Google or Facebook permission window and user is asked to click "OK" to proceed sign-in.
( 1 ) Otherwise, (without Google/Facebook client installed), it will proceed to web sign-in (same like weibo sign-in screenshot you posted), I believe it's the case for the apps that adopt such sign-in methods.

eXtended Permission Manager - a small app to manage permissions and AppOps.
Features:
Using eXtended Permission Manager, for each installed app, on single screen, you can:
View, grant or revoke manifest permissions
View AppOps permissions and choose one of multiple modes
Set your desired reference value for every changeable permission
The app evolved from a shell script to a GUI for my personal needs. After a ROM upgrade or changing device, it's a time-taking process to review all installed apps for granted permissions and revoke the unnecessary ones (after all privacy matters). To come up with a solution, you can set reference states of permissions which can be quickly backed up and restored. Colored bars at left indicate reference states and make it quite easy to review packages and permissions at a glance.
Manifest permissions are those normally called permissions e.g. Storage, Camera etc. AppOps (app operations) is a robust framework Android uses at back end for access control. With every Android release manifest permissions are becoming more dependent on AppOps. So it's fun to control both simultaneously and see how they relate to each other.
In short, AppOps provide a fine-grained control over many of the manifest permissions. Plus it provides additional controls like background execution, vibration, clipboard access etc. Explore the app to see more.
And yes, the basic functionality of Permission Manager X is completely free and open-source. No ads, no trackers, no analytics. You are encouraged and requested to support the development. Source code is available at below Github link.
Required Privileges / Permissions:
In order to let Permission Manager X serve you at its best, either the device must be rooted or you need to enable ADB over network.
android.permission.INTERNET is required to use ADB over network. The only connection made outside the device is to check for app updates.

I purchased the app in Google Play, is a great app. I like a lot that I can remove the permissions to read/write on Clipboard. That works great and there are a lot of things that you can control. I which just one thing to be added on the future... an option to allow all the permissions per app and set a separate parameter for how long and then return to the previous values. For example... an app Notepad S app, fully restricted, but before using it be able to click an option to set only to that app full permissions and the amount of minutes, once timeout the app return to fully restricted. For now that is a manual process for some of the permissions. I love the app and hope more people get this from Google Play and support your work.

Thank you for the feedback. Please check Permission Watcher feature. Download latest beta from Telegram group.
permission enforcement, new app permission enforcement
(1) So if i understand correctly, the permission enforcement is there as the periodic check can notify or even fix the permissions. (2) Now the second important aspect: enforce newly installed apps. In this case, there's just notification? I'd find it extremely useful to be able to drop all (a la XPrivacyLua) or selected permissions (via template a la AppOps app) from the new app until it's manually reviewed (which could be never - no problem). Not only because the new apps get often started asap and do their antiprivacy stuff, but also because some lazy users will simply won't review them at all, and let for example, Facebook malware grab contacts asap.

Yes you are correct. Both Schedule Checker and Permission Watcher help you enforce permissions.

Good point. Actually it's no way a problem for PMX to drop permissions when it's already showing a notification for a new app. But there is nothing to drop when a new app is installed. All the revokable manifest permissions are already revoked until the user does not grant them. And the AppOps: many of them don't appear until at least once used by the app e.g. VIBRATION and READ_CLIPBOARD. Many others have their corresponding manifest permissions e.g. READ_CONTACTS, which are already revoked, as pointed out.
Profiles / templates is an upcoming feature. We are working on it.
Not only because the new apps get often started asap and do their antiprivacy stuff, but also because some lazy users will simply won't review them at all, and let for example, Facebook malware grab contacts asap.

Contacts cannot be read in background without the permission explicitly granted by the user. And even after that, Schedule Checker is there to remind you that you haven't reviewed a newly installed app so far.
Thanks for the feedback. It's appreciated.
Hi there,
I am a newbie with Android and smart phones.
As an old-school tech, from Windows 3.0 to Gnu/Linux, I want for long time avoid all GAFAM stuff and keep a bit of privacy and security.
I came across the Exodus site and try to find app with zero tracker and minimum permission.
Do you care about that?
Do you use FOSS apps?
Do you have a list of usual apps that fulfill your need AND privacy?
Any help, advise, list of apps (browser, messaging, files management, maintenance, ...) are welcome.

IMHO it doesn't matter where you fetch apps from: F-Droid, Google Play Store, etc.pp.

I you sure only normal permissions get allowed by default without any user interaction? and where can I separately allow or deny them? Is there a place where all these permissions are explained and what I'll block in the app when denied?
What about tracker? Is it possible to deactivate them?
I think trackers are more intrusive than permissions. Am I right?

Yes, only normal permissions get allowed by default, the apps will ask for the rest of them and you can deny them if you want. Also the only way to disable trackers is with aurora appwarden or trackercontrol, but sometimes the apps with disabled trackers could crash.
@MrNice
an app only can track you if it has the related Android permission granted to do so.

Hummm, for me, these 2 sentences look like an oxymoron.
Could you explain?
My last 2 cents here:
An app doesn't have trackers, it only has granted permissions, but an app may behave as tracker - where it doesn't matter whatever it will track - if it got granted the related permissions.
Have a nice day.
I use Karma Firewall to log/see what's accessing the internet and block it if needed.
Many don't need internet access to be functional.
Some of the worst offenders I uninstalled.
Gookill is the worst offender, I keep Google play Services and Playstore disabled 99% of the time.
Some freeware apps are perfect. They do nothing except what they're suppose to do and never attempt internet access; keepers.
