[Q] BigPart question - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm pretty sure I have my Wingray Xoom updated and using the new partitions because I have the new CM installed and running. But my issue is when I went to do the BigPart procedure the data partition wouldn't mount after switching over to F2FS so I have it in ext4. How do I get it over to F2FS because without it the tablet seems to run slow and choppy.

I'm am nowhere near an expert, but my understanding is that, while the BigPart TWRP is F2FS compatible, there are not yet any Xoom ROMS (or kernels???) that are F2FS compatible. Therefore there is no way to get F2FS to work on the Xoom at this time.

F2FS needs support in the kernel. F2FS is currently only supported in 3.0+ linux kernels. As I'm sure you are both aware we have a 2.6 kernel which is now prehistoric!
BRD looked into it and from what I gather said it couldn't be done without extensive work, schischu was looking into it last month I believe and deciding whether to take on the task.
We haven't heard anything since.
I would assume we will not get F2FS but we can always hope

Well even if there aren't any ROMs or kernels that support F2FS why is it that I can't mount data partition after re-partitioning it. Shouldn't I be able to format it and mount it anyway?

That's probably an indication that the repartition went wrong. Hop over to the bigPart thread and ask for assistance there. You may want to start over.

[SOLVED] About Ext file partitions on EOS roms with KAT kernel

Iˋve been using Team EOS3 (and now EOS4 #88) with KAT kernel and would like to format my microsd card to Ext4 but the system doesnˋt seen to mount it.
I did some research and found that the support for a specific file system can be on either the kernel or on the rom as well, and I know that both EOS and KAT support NTFS full write now, but Microsoft File systems are kind of a pain for me. I would be happy with either Ext3 or Ext4, maybe even Ext2.
On the computer side, Iˋm using Arch Linux and gparted to make the formatting, and the partition table is MSdos.
So, my question now is: Can I enable support for Ext3/4 on this combo ROM/Kernel? How?
EDIT:
It's sorted now, it was an issue involving JB and mounting inside the /storage folder. The issue is gone using EOS4 preview b136 or EOS4#93 both need Kat Kernel 80b or later and the KAT app latest version as well.

[Q] F2FS or Data2SD?

Both? Neither? One or the other?
Going to reload my TF700, probably with CROMBi-kk to try it out. Looking to optimize web browsing/facebook/gmail etc performance. Currently on CROMi-X 5.4.

Both = very fast
Very Fast would be good!! Format the internal memory as F2FS also, or just the sdcard?

If you use data2sd then internal /data is not used.
You only need to format mmcblk1p2 to f2fs on the card for data2sd.

faster than rom2sd? ive found it to be quick at times, then mighty slow at others. thanks!
if f2fs+data2sd is the faster option, how should i go about getting rid of the sd installation, just take it out and install like normal on the tablet?

I've noticed no difference between data2sd and rom2sd but f2fs allows better use of the tablet when things are downloading in the background for example.

Easiest way is install the latest TWRP 2.7.1.1 which has format options now for both ext4 (takes 90 mins) and f2fs (takes seconds).
You'll obviously lose everything if you format /data as f2fs so have a backup if you want to go back.
If you are using data2sd or rom2sd just remember to use the data2sd1.zip or rom2sd1.zip first to switch TWRP over to your external partitions otherwise you will be formatting internal.

If you use data2sd (or rom2sd for that matter) you are not using the internal data partition for daily operations other than storage maybe. So you can leave it alone.
First step is to backup any data from the rom2sd data partition you want to keep.
Then you have to repartition the card. For data2sd you have to have 2 partitions (not 3 as in rom2sd): one fat32, one ext4 or f2fs. Do that in Gparted and while you're at it, you can format the future data partition to f2fs.
Then flash the rom with the data2sd option and _that v10 kernel.
I would also recommend getting TWRP 2.7.1
gparted?
so do i need to use gparted to partition my sd card or can it all be done with twrp and your crombi rom?

You must use gparted There is no other way.
Thank you. I'm doing my best to read through the last 100 pages of the q&a and the Rom page.

Go to the crombi-kk thread in the dev section and see post 2 - the instructions are there on how to do it
Once you partition it the installer will then do everything else for you
Thank you I did read that one, very straight forward. I am having trouble finding a zip containing twrp 2.7.1.1 ... I currently have 2.6.3-that3 but twrp manager keeps crashing on me and does not Let me choose a device in order to upgrade.

Download the blob from the TWRP site and install it via fastboot.
I got the file from techerrata with md5, is this a reliable source? Please forgive my newb green-ness

Updated TWRP to 2.8.5.0 and now can't change /data to F2FS

Hi. I used dd to the p4 partition using the terminal app. Everything other than changing the format seems to work. I did a restore. TWRP announced that the backup came from a f2fs partition and that the current is ext4.
I realize that this is a tf700 forum, but I thought I read that 2.8.5.0 handled f2fs better than earlier releases. Is anyone else seeing this behaviour?
Thx!

Yes, I'm having the same problem. When I attempt to format internal /data to f2f2 I get errors...E: Unable to wipe /data.....E:Unknown MTP message type: 1 ......E: Error changing file system.
I haven't tried this yet, but I read in another forum that apparently this is a problem with TWRP 2.8.5.0.....someone there suggested dropping back to TWRP 2.8.4.0. As I said, I haven't done that yet, so I'm hoping that works.

Thx for checking around. I downloaded 2.8.4.0 again and I'll roll back in a few. Cheers!

Dropping back to 2.8.4.0 worked.
Or you can take a look and my kang version .....

Firstly you need to have a kernel installed which supports f2fs, I think only arters kernel supports it right now. The process involves converting the different partitions from ext4 to f2fs within twrp, so like data and system, if you look at benchmarks f2fs is better than ext4 but I've never done it personally so cannot give too much info, but the above is a quick rundown in what's involved

It is safe to do, but as with all mods there maybe instances where you might get hiccups. Just be aware that you are formatting the partitions so you will lose data, so make sure you do a full back up

F2FS

Does the data partition formatted to F2FS cause random reboots? I cant seem to narrow it down to anything else. Every nougat rom i tried so far seems to random reboot 3-4 times a day with clean installs. What file format is recommended for custom roms on this phone?
you need a custom kernel for that i think, i thin firekernel has support.
idk tho i dont have experience with it
I believe that ext4 is the stock filesystem type for the data partition, I've never changed it.
Actually, the stock ROM has the data partition formatted as F2FS. It's one of the factors in making the lower end processor seem as fast and snappy as it is.
You can check it in TWRP recovery. Go to advanced wipe and check the formatting for the data partition.

Hmm... Your right, a quick look at mount in the terminal confirms that. Sorry, my bad.
Now that we know that, I guess the F2FS file system type is probably not the cause of your issues.

Yes. I've tried different combinations of partitions formatted to f2fs and it would only work using data as F2FS. Im using the newest aosp extended. Maybe this rom will fix my reboot problems. I am new to this phone coming from a falcon. I know one thing, i am not enjoying moto display. The screen seems to turn on when you dont want it to all the time. I miss my notification LED.
