gpsd keeping phone awake all the time - General Questions and Answers

I have a Samsung S4 I9500 and since the 4.4.2 upgrade my battery started draining around 10% per hour. I checked the battery settings and it says that the draining apps are: Android OS, Android System and gpsd. I also installed BetterBatteryStats and I found out that the phone is awake 100% of the time. Then I checked the Kernel Wakelocks and gpsd is the process keeping my phone awake most of the time. I have searched forums and google exhaustively and tried all solutions but none have worked. I even rooted my phone and started uninstalling all apps that could be using the gpsd process and it didn't work. Then I installed CyanogenMod hoping this would work, but no, I still have the same problem. Right now I have CyanogenMod CM11 (cm-11-20140811-NIGHTLY-i9500), gapps (MICRO MODULAR PACKAGE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397942) and only a few extra apps installed: App Master, BetterBatteryStats, ColorNote, Slider Widget, Waze, Whatsapp and Xperia keyboard (I installed this one because the Android Keyboard (AOSP) kept crashing, so I disabled it). I have no idea of what to do next, if someone with extensive Android and gpsd knowledge can help me please do so, I have run out of ideas on what to do to fix this...

renaming gpsd
So I can rename the gpsd bin in /system/bin/gpsd to something else and it won't drain my battery anymore, but I can't use my gps... I need to rename it to gpsd and restart my phone... ANNOYING!

solution (partially)
So I partially solved my problem:
I created two shell scripts to stop and start the gpsd process. So if I want to use an app like Waze that uses gpsd I launch my start script and then when I finish using the app I launch my stop script. I use the SManager app to launch the scripts (with the Widget addon to have quick buttons in the start screen.
start_gpsd:
#!/system/bin/sh
mount -o rw,remount /system
chmod 755 /system/bin/gpsd
mount -o ro,remount /system
pkill scriptmanager
stop_gpsd:
#!/system/bin/sh
mount -o rw,remount /system
chmod 644 /system/bin/gpsd
pkill gpsd
mount -o ro,remount /system
pkill scriptmanager

having the same problem
i'm having the same problem. gpsd is eating up my battery. the phone can't get into deep sleep.
for a few days i was able to experiene normal battery and then it comes up again after 2 days.
i'm starting to think that this might be a google search or google now problem. before updates, everything was working fine. i initially thought foursquare was the culprit but the problem is still there.
this is so irritating, no one seems to have a solution.

solution (partially) script
Hi tomatus270389
Could you please tell me, how can I make that shell script step by step.
Thanks.

Hi Chinov
I've been struggling with the GPSD process chomping away at my battery for 2 weeks now. Finally I found a work-around that works for me, although it doesn't solve the root cause.
I solved the issue on my Galaxy S4 (rooted with Omega 24) by installing Tasker (purchased from the play store). It's actually quite simple once installed. You create a new shell script task that runs as su and in the command type "pkill gpsd" (without the quotes). Then you can set an IF condition (at the bottom) to only execute it when %GPS not equal "on" (also without the quotes). That will ensure that Tasker doesn't kill the gpsd process when you switched GPS on manually to use it for navigation etc. Once that's done, you can create a schedule to execute that task every 2 minutes or whatever works for you.
Easy! :good:
Hope this helps you or someone else.

I am 99,99% sure it is not a local hardware/software issue, but a carrier issue due to any incorrect parameters on their net/cells, maybe Fast Dormancy... not sure.
All with this issue, see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51989209

Feedback on this from my side: Turned out you're correct jaswinky, it was something the carrier did. They very quietly disabled whatever they did and my problems went away. I only found out about what they did in other local forums. At least the work-around sorted my battery drain problems out while the carrier mucked around.

Thanks so much for the SManager solution above.
This problem was driving me crazy. I'm posting incase someone else that has as little knowledge as me about all this stuff is trying to fix this problem as i was stuck on why my phone wouldn't recognize the pkill command.
All I needed to do was install busybox (like I said, I know nothing about any of this stuff) and then the script worked like a charm.

Thanks for posting. Tasker worked a treat. For some reason GPSD was enabled when I made or received calls and then the process would continue running not allowing the phone to deep sleep.

Result:
After instal the cab, launch TGsolution.exe from START MENU.
In the program only one choice : Unlock Input option
So click on it, then choose soft reset and the icon for Input setting appear in Personnal Setting.
It's for the rom who missing this input option.
So why call this TG Solution? Maybe Nokser will add more solution later, but without device, will be difficult.

yeh i second that! (i know this thread is really old! )
i hope we an remove the 20% limit with a reg tweak solution. we just need more investigation. i know there is a 'temp' solution - stopping BAT1.exe with a Advanced Task Killer, but it is not ideal...
Any solutions?

I know mentioned solution but it is not ideal not because of one has to stop battery driver but does not work in all cases . Wi-Fi and GSM can be cheated by this but Camera software not. It seems Camera ask battery driver directly via IOCTL code ( I created similar software asking driver not coredll ) not coredll and gets correct result - only 20% or less. Asking via coredll ( it seems Wi-Fi and GSM manager do this way ) returns stupid results ( it seems coredll does not refresh handle to battery driver assuming all the time it is still on and never be stopped or restarted ) showing as I remember that battery is being charging and has more than 20%.
Anyway, some other time in the future I am going to write any kind of stub on existing battery driver and it will be cheating whole the system

Hmmm... For me, the battery limitation truck can also be used, and I can use the camera app fine.if someone can make the stop/start battery driver into a single icon to tap, it would fantastic

Hi.
One month ago or later I was doing some tests. Problem is that on some WM systems when one stop battery driver, system responds message about crash in device.exe ( it supports all drivers ) and as I remember, system ( programs that check battery level ) can not be cheated. On such systems restarting battery driver ( whatever it means I use terminology from TaskMgr.exe. It seems to be fast stop and start driver but I am not sure) behaves much better. It is my case. Wi-Fi and GPRS can be cheated but camera not. On some systems ( I do not quite remember , maybe it was WM6.1 by ffboy ) battery driver can be stopped and all software work fine.
This implies that software You would like someone to create, should rather restarts battery driver not stops.
If You and any other colegues can see such need, I can try to create some piece of software that restarts battery driver. I am not sure it should be available as single icon to tap on desktop because it seems to be "one usage" software. As You know battery driver restart cheats the system and nothing is able to change it ( another driver restarts ) untill system restart.
I did some tests and it should be relatively easy to stop/start battery driver.

[wip] (mod) gps fix 8/14

OK after doing some research and testing on over 10 devices I have came up with this MOD , that has been working for me for 2 days now. This should work on most devices. We all no Samsungs GPS hardware is not the greatest. Some with the S3 have no issues some where in the same boat as me. For myself I could never get a lock in navigation, if I could it would take 10 min up to 30 . If I ever got a lock ,it dropped signal frequently or was inaccurate, so much that it was no of use. Now on maps it would eventually show my position but it would be off , for example, show me on the next street or on the other side of the highway. So If you find yourself in this situation feel free to give it a try.
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
You need to be rooted to be able to grant R/W capabilities. To be safe , always make a nandroid backup and back up the original file you are replacing. My self or XDA are not responsible for any malfunction to your device or anything else that may occur, while hacking your phone.
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
1) Download new gps.conf file>>>
http://db.tt/5xvFneRt
2) Replace it in /ect . Rename the original one from .conf to .bak. using a file explorer with R/W enabled , so yes you have to be rooted!
3) Download GPS toolbox https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2
4) Reboot.
5) Enable standalone GPS and Google services NOT Verizon services.
6) Open GPS status select options/tools/reset . Then options/ tools/download
7) Reboot
8) Open GPS status and wait for lock . Mine took 5 min a friends took 3. Then open up navigation .
9) Profit
★★NOTES★★
Always enable standalone GPS and Google location services ,FIRST! Then open up GPS toolbox to get a lock. The first time you do this it might take up to 10 to 15 min based on your location. After getting a lock threw the app, then open up navigation and you should be good to go. After using this yesterday I'm locking on in under 5 sec with 9-15 sat locked on. If you have bit used your GPS in a while, open app and reset and download again , then reboot. Then wait for lock threw app and your back on track.
Hope this helps a few and I will be updating this when I finish implementing other things.
If this helped you hit the thanks button

Maybe you can use this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1447598 to help with GPS. I used it with much success with my Droid Incredible 2. Probably a bunch of settings can be pulled in from that gps.conf file to beef up our stock gps.conf.

just saying, but shouldn't you go get your phone replaced, have verizon check it, if you have gps issues? many GS3 owners including me have zero issues with GPS. I did have GPS issues with 3rd party roms, synergy and clean both. once back to stock rooted, no problem.
The gps on the S3 is the quickest and most reliable i've had the pleasure of using, out of the box. I can't express enough how impressed I was by this, because i've become accustomed to having to fix it to make it work properly, and have done so for a variety of androids for my random co-workers I meet on the road.
That said, if people are having issues - and lets be real here, once you start flashing stuff anything can happen - it's good to see people diving in to work on the problems.
To that end, OP (or anyone else interested), here is a thread with a very detailed explanation of what I did to fix gps for another device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16822068
...which may be of some value to read through in your research for this issue.
Please forgive the dead links, I was away from dev for a while and didn't realize goo went down and lost what I had there. I am working with another forum member to get my works hosted again.
Meantime, the text of the gps.conf file is in code blocks in the op of the thread I linked, so in this particular case the dead links shouldn't be a problem.
Hope this helps a bit.
I'm beginning to think it has something to do with Google maps. Downloaded map quest and it locks on quickly.

[Completed] [Q] Constant rebooting: i9100 Samsung Galaxy S2 :(

Hi there-
My Galaxy S2 just last night started with some new weird behaviour. I had tried to use it for navigation earlier in the evening and left WiFi and GPS on accidentally... an hour or so later the phone was running hot and started rebooting (has never been super-stable, so I wasn't too concerned) - charging overnight and now the phone insists on rebooting after about 1-2 minutes.
Have rebooted into SAFE MODE, and things are relatively ok, until I open the SETTINGS> APPLICATION MANAGER... which triggers a crash/reboot almost immediately.
I've not installed any new apps for some time (nor bothered with any regular virus scanning) - and am not sure what's up with my phone.
I'd really like to avoid having to re-flash/factory reset... as getting one's phone back to "normal" can take months!
Any helpful input would be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance!!! =)
Running Android 4.3.3 JellySNAP ROm, Kernel version: 3.0.101-Apolo_4.13_Regular-gf40153f

Maybe found the culprit? How to remove it? :/
Just in case anyone actually cares, I may have found some useful info...
Facebook Messenger has been very resource hungry and unstable... In my culling of apps I'm noticing it is the most resistant to being uninstalled. No matter how I find the app (in Rom Toolbox, App manager etc) - it won't let me kill it fully.
Attempting an uninstall of Messenger triggers an immediate crash/reboot.
How can I completely obliterate it?

I managed to "freeze" messenger with a lot of luck... though I can't remove it. Phone is kind-of ok... unless I open the Application Manager.
Seems Messenger doesn't want me even looking at it! (Instant reboot)
Any ideas how to remove this awful program?

S7 with custom rom(s) and Xposed - Internet connected apps breaking

Hi all, long lurking rom-installer who can self-fix most problems here. Got a problem I can't fix that's bothering me. Recently upgraded to an S7 so naturally rooted it on day one and been trying to get it my-kind-of-working fully ever since. I do like to bugger about with things in a vain attempt to shield some private data from some orgs and realise I'm in a particularly specific hole that I'll probably have to climb out of on my own, but if you don't ask...
Internet using apps pretend to work, sometimes for days, then just refuse to open. Screenshot example of the second and persistent error (after simply "Lightning has stopped" the first time) is attached.
Model: G930F
Current ROM: ambasadii 7.0 TW Nougat (here)
Xposed: 88.2
Root: Magisk
Significant mods:
1) use xPrivacy
2) disabled significant number of remaining packages using Package Disabler Pro (list attached)
3) run Orbot
4) run AFWall
5) modify app permissions in Settings/Apps to restrict where I think I safely can
6) run BackgroundRestrictor
The behaviour still emerges even if I don't apply 4), 5) or 6), it has started prior to me finishing my tweaking.
I know xPrivacy is not supported for Nougat but it seems to work ok for the most part with some retweaking of settings since moving from Marshmallow on my old phone. I understand it could be the cause of the problem but I'm wedded to (some of) my privacy enough to persevere before abandoning it. For the record I've checked the usage log for restrictions on any calls around e.g. internet that might be interfering but I've been unusually generous with permissions trying to fix this and there's no restrictions on any apps with internet access around that, or much else really at this point. I've also had a look in general usage log rather than app specific, looking for system components that may be working alongside the app and failing with a restriction but can't see anything being denied. Any system apps haven't been touched by me, I fetched what I could from xprivacy crowdsourced restrictions on the base ROM apps and then only applied my template to apps I've downloaded myself.
Some other background on the problem: everything will be set up as I like it - ROM installed, debloated, all the rest of above modding applied. It will be working super-fine. Nice and fast, little bloat left, just enough Google to get Play Store, apps installed and working, all will be and appear fine. After an undetermined & fluctuating length of time all of the internet-facing apps will suddenly not open. This includes but isn't limited to the Browser (stock and Lightning, Brave, Pale Moon, etc.), Twitter, Signal and the Official TWRP App.
Interestingly, internet-connecting apps that will connect on demand but don't seem to make a call on every app open (mostly due to prior settings changes) do not fail. They will still open fine and work fine, connecting when asked and not crashing. For example, K9 Mail and Pocket.
Another weird data-point: Signal will fail but will often do so later than the other internet-connected apps - possibly it has a token with GCM or something that when it expires will try to renew on app open which is when it starts to fail like the others?
The apps will work again if uninstalled and reinstalled but once the behaviour starts again, and it will, it will repeat. Sometimes twice or more in a day. So reinstalling every time is not going to make for a usable phone. It's like they have an error renewing their wifi lease or something.
It can take up to three days to begin - this build it worked fine for days whilst I was away and slowly, progressively building the system back up with regular TWRP backups. I can restore a TWRP backup from about 6 hours before the problem started and it'll work fine again, but still wait a random amount of time before the problem begins again.
I did think it may be something to do with the router here and home WiFi as it behaved much better whilst away and didn't break until my return, though that is likely coincidence. I'm in pattern-observing mindframe so false positives are everywhere. I thought it was connecting to the PC via USB that was doing it at one point.
Last data point: it's happened with a different base rom too (Decent here), same thing, but came on sooner each time. I would change the base rom again to see if it's something there but I suspect that should be one of the last things I try given it's happened across two roms now.
Anyway, if anyone has any insight on Nougat TW ROMs on an S7 with this kind of set up and/or any clues or ideas as to why internet connects would suddenly be crashing all these apps... I'd be grateful. Otherwise I have many reinstalls and possibilities to eliminate. Which means waiting many sets of days before I can repeat, which makes progress frustratingly slow when you depend on the phone (Signal particularly) to connect with people.
AFWall stands out if you're having problem with net connections to apps etc
Yes good point, thank you. I think i've run the ROM with same problems without any rules applied but I've disabled it fully now just to be sure. Much obliged.
If it persists, the proper way of troubleshooting would be to clean install the ROM only, no tweaks, Xposed, firewalls or anything, just the ROM and your apps you're having problems with
If that all works together fine, then add ONE new thing to the mix, test for a few days, rinse and repeat until you add something that causes the problem again
With testing for a few days between each new addition you're be 100% sure what is causing it once it starts again
Thank you! Yes that's the plan but I thought I'd ask first as there's a lot of waiting down that route. I did do it to a point during last build but only waited overnight after each phase. I think I'll start that.now. I can always restore this backup if the solution presents in the meantime.
Yea that's what I was thinking, backup this ROM, clean install, work out the issue, restore this ROM and fix it
Good luck
Thank you I'll report back if/when I work it out, for any other possible future readers.
I changed the base ROM & installed Xposed in a different way and rooted in a different way and tweaked Permissions to be more permissive and and and... I've read rovo89's farewell so I won't say "It's xprivacy" but it's definitely how xposed & xprivacy interact, whether by flashable zip or systemless magisk. It'll work fine for a good while but then starts corrupting everything internet connecting. Removing it removes the problem & restores the app functionality.
Sadly it's the same even if you restrict nothing in xprivacy & just leave it installed & switched on. I've had to remove it. Considering trying to go back to MM as I know it worked on my previous phone.

Notification problems anyone ?

I must say i love the phone as in battery life and the camera also gives some nice pictures.
But what started it to not love the phone anymore is the notification problem.
I installed Whatsapp and as soon as the lockscreen was active or a few minutes later it stopped to receive notifications.
This also was for Telegram and my home automation app.
I have searched for topics and found quite allot of these similar notification problems with tips.
What i have done is set by every application that needed to be running in the background :
Enable autostart
Turn of battery saving mode - no limitation
Lock the app in the screen where you can empty / close the running apps.
Also found a topic and application that should "fix" some notification problems for MIUI.
https://github.com/FabioCZ
Not sure if this completly works but i am starting to get most notifications on whatsapp/telegram etc.
What does not work at all is my video doorbell,
the application is Hik-Connect.
Got my older samsung phone laying next to the note 10 and press the ring button.
Only samsung rings, the note 10 doesn't work at all.
ofcourse i have installed them both from the playstore, used the same settings on the xiaomi to keep it running.
Nothing
Is there anyone that has an idea, because the whole handy thingy is gone now.
maybe a custrom rom will solve it,but since i have no idea how to make it thats a no go
I did unlocked the phone , installed orange fox and magisk to use titanium backup.
Can say that this didn't work flawless also, getting magisk giving the toast message to give certain apps root acces etc etc.
whats even worse, can't return the phones ( got 2, 1 for me and for m girlfriend)
Well hope someone has an idea.
Thanks
edit: i am using nightskeeper to automatically turn of the sound at a certain time and turn it on.
Give some contacts rights to still call trough the audio block.
But also this application does not work anymore, i get this notice every time but its already active.
When i enter ok, and turn the permissions on it works again for a few hours or so and then its gone.
its getting a bit frustrating , hopefully my alarm clock will still stay working

the sound trick was indeed a good one because it could not find the audio file that was set from my samsung phone ( used titanium backup to install WA again)
It does seem that 9 of 10 times i do get the notices.
Also got my Hik-Connect app finally running and ringing when i press the doorbell.
Now comes the strangest part, the settings that i have put in my phone are identical to the phone of my girlfriend.
And my phone works with most of the services that i want but the phone from my girl doesn't.
Also bumped into another thing, wifi tethering .
I have a android radio in my car, what i got set with Tasker for years is :
1 - jump in the car
2- bluetooth makes a connection to the radio/phone .
3- tasker notices this, starts wifi tethering / hotspot
4- radio will connect on the hotspot of the phone and live traffic naviation / streaming radio works.
That was how it was supposed to work, now i get a notice from tasker that its not working, need a extra application and root.
I have root / installed the wifi tasker tether application. Also found the module that should do the same and installed this in magisk.
But still a no go
i do like fiddeling around with my phones, but it has to work eventually haha.
Would come in handy if i know how to write code and make my own fix for this.
Ah well anyway, im going to make a full backup from my phone and try to set this 1:1 on my girls phone.
Hopefully the notifications and the doorbell will work then.
Thanks guys
Im using notifybuddy for notifications and it's a life changer.
Hello Vincenttot, I have bought a PocoX3 PRO mobile and the same thing happens to you.
What does not work at all is my video doorbell, the application is Hik-Connect. But on other phones it works fine.
Have you found any solution?
Thanks guys
