After the latest 4.4.4 OTA update, im getting battery drained from Google Maps and Waze after opening them. Force closed them but the GPS is still going on. Location has been turned off. It only goes off after rebooting. Any solutions for this?

The same thing is happening to me. Also on 33R. Did you (or anyone) find a solution for this? (apart from rebooting)

Hi everybody,
Just noticed I'm having some issues with sensors being used 100% of the time by navigation apps, eating up my battery like crazy.
First I've noticed Sygic 11.2.6 showing as the second battery consumer (about 25% of the total battery usage at any given time) with orientation sensor used 100% of the time even though no process related to Sygic was running.
Restarting would fix the problem, only for it to reappear as soon as I started Sygic again.
After I've uninstalled Sygic I noticed Google Maps 6.6.0 having about the same behavior, using the accelerometer 100% of the time even after force closing the app. Again, restarting the phone would fix the issue but running Maps once would make it appear again.
I tried uninstalling the updates, reverting to version 5.8.0 and no more accelerometer issues. Updated to 6.6.0 and started having the same issues again. Uninstalling the updates once more and again no sensor issue.
One interesting thing is that if I restart the phone and then disable auto-rotation, once I run Sygic or Google Maps 6.6.0 the apps start using the orientation/accelerometer sensor 100% of the time just like they use to (even though it's disabled!!!!...?!?!).
To me this would seem like a software issue. Anybody else experiencing something similar?!
Thank you in advance for your opinions!

Yes... noticed this with Sygic. It's a known app bug, and they still haven't fixed it yet. Haven't had this issue with Google maps though. Be warned however that any navigation app will chew up your battery very fast... Can't help it since it's accessing the Net, Compass, Accelerometer and GPS antenna - all at the same time at a high refresh rate...
Thank you fir your reply!
I know navigation is supposed to use a lot of battery but doing it even with processes closed?
It's good to know you confirm the Sygic bug. Honestly I've googled for 2 days and wasn't able to find any useful info about such a bug with Sygic. And for me, since Google Maps 6.6.0 acts the same way, it makes me think it's also a bug. For now I'm sticking to Maps 5.8.0 and I've reported the issue over to Google.
Thank you again!
anyone have any idea how to reduce this wake lock, have about 1hr + of this wakelock during my sleep
Try turning off, freezing, hangouts and see if it goes away. Just an educated guess. I think it's caused by hangouts syncing
Some good info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1811365

I'm also experiencing this problem. I've tried disabling many Google apps (including hangouts) and disabling Google Play Services that were always running but nothing works. All I know is that it's related to mobile data (It goes away on WIFI, airplane mode or simply turning data off) and that it's not caused by a third party app (Safe mode doesn't help either). Did you ever foind a solution for this?, please let me know. I'm getting real sick of this and I'm considering installing CM or downgrading to 5.0.1, which worked perfectly.
Is anyone seeing this copious amounts of this wakelock too? It's part of the Google Search app and its wakelock has now been active for close to 5 hours now just today and seems to be active for most of the day. This is reported by Better Battery Stats and is seems to be confirmed by high energy usage by the built-in batttery settings app, as Google Search hovers in the mid 20s percentage.

I got this wakelock overnight after completely disabling location services. My N5 was held awake literally the whole night by this wakelock. This morning I turned back on location reporting and the phone is deep sleeping once again. Very strange. Did you have location service disabled because that seems to be what is causing the wakelock?
I would like to find a solution to this so I can keep location services disabled without completely disabling Google Now for overnight when I can't access a charger.

Yeah, I have my location services set to "device only", which I guess is the equivalent to the former GPS only. It could be that the GPS is turning itself off and on continually while it's supposed to be sleeping, and the fact that I'm mainly indoors could explain the hours long wakelock.
I set it to GPS only on the Nexus 5, because that was the most battery friendly on the Nexus 4, but the way services now work, it could be the least battery friendly setting.
this is completely confirmed! my note3 wasnt sleeping at all with the new google search 20hrs of no deep sleep with location off and i turned location on and its been sleeping like a dream for the past hour.. Very weird though
Same issue here with my HTC One. I noticed my battery was tanking at about twice the normal rate today, so I just opened up Wake Lock Detector and saw that on about 5.5 hours of use, Google Search had it awake for 4.5 of them. I've just turned on location services to see if that fixes it.
But, I'm with you. I'd rather find a fix that lets me keep location disabled.
Me too. I have a Galaxy4 S4 with 4.3 stock Samsung ROM. WLD shows huge count of EntriesRefresh_wakelock with almost three hours from 12 por off charge.
Confirmed on the lg g2 on 4.3. I disabled Wi-Fi and mobile network location because of the horrible nlp partial wakelocks only to encounter the entriesRefresh wakelock leech. Keeps awake like 90 of the time. I'm going to go back to enable Wi-Fi and mobile location until this is cleared up.
I am unable to even use Google now.. if I enable Location Report it's burning up and running about 20%.. if I disable Location Reporting it's running 50%.. I like Google Now and don't have any use for the location stuff...
Anyone have any updates? My only other option is going to just be to wipe it and keep Google Now unused so it doesn't run at all..
You can try to greenify Google search which contains this wakelock if you have the paid version of greenify (hibernates system apps). They say it's inadvisable to hibernate system apps, but you can override it. I would do a full backup and try it. They refund your money in 3 days instead of 15 minutes if your not happy. I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Oddly enough I never had this issue on my nexus 5, but my Nexus 7 is absolutely plagued with just hours and hours of this wake lock as soon as I turn location reporting off.
Same issue here, my N7 is going nuts with this.

This has happened on my N5 before. Force stopping it once I noticed and also rebooting seem to fix it.
I had this wakelock for 2 nights in a row, completely draining the battery BUT
I have location services enabled and GPS is on (I play Ingress all the time and the network loaction gives me a faster lock)
I too noticed this was my top partial wakelock yesterday even though I have location services on. First time I've seen that happen. But it wasn't as aggressive as it was when location services were off.

Noticed this keeping my Nexus 5 awake 51%, location services were disabled. My Nexus 7 and Moto X also have them disabled and they were only awake 1%. Google Search is showing 60% of the battery but my device has been mostly idle for 4 days now. I'll see if enabling the services helps otherwise I'm not sure what else to attempt.

I got this wakelock this morning.... "entriesrefresh_wakelock"
my location reporting is off
I love my N5 but god......I'm experiencing battery drain frequently (when I'm not on WIFI) with different wakelocks...
Otherwise the battery life is very good, if google can fix it once for all
I had this problem on my Nexus 5 too. I "fixed" it by uninstalling updates for the Google Search app (you can get there by going Settings>Apps and tapping Google Search). However Google will re-update the app frequently so you will have to repeat the process. Here's hoping another update fixes this problem.
Either disabling Location reporting or Locations all together can get rid of this I believe. Tasker can automatically re-enable it when you leave your wifi zone.
I was having a few battery drain and stability problems so I decided it was time to do a fresh install of Android. The main culprit was Play Services but it was always a different thread and I could never get the problem under control. I was barely getting through a 16 hour day on a single battery charge even with only an hour of screen on time which is insane for these droid maxx's.
I flashed stock Android 4.4 and accidentally unrooted myself in the process, but that means I am 100% stock kitkat with the late April mini update.
I still have the Play Services battery drain bug.
I killed half my battery yesterday in like a half hour of screen on time and 7 hours of idle. The phone won't sleep. Google Play Services still shows as the culprit in the battery settings.
I've disabled Now, location settings, sync (it literally doesn't sync anything), wi-fi, and interest-based ads. (All tips I've seen from people that have had the bug across XDA). I've let Play Services update from 4.8 to 5.0. And it still won't let the phone go to sleep.
Anyone have any other thoughts on the issue? I'm ready to pull my hair out! I have no idea what's causing this bug but it's driving me up the wall.
BTW I don't have any meaningful screenshots right now because I'm not rooted yet. I'm going to try jcase's pie method to get root back and post via BBS, but in the meantime I've heard this is a fairly common issue, so I threw the post up in case anyone else has encountered and solved the problem. What I'll share in the meantime is that my phone has been off the charger today for 1 hr 39 min. Play Services has kept it awake for 1 hr 38 min.

Ive had this problem too... Only I am on 4.2.2. Only fix for me was either nandroid'ing back to a previous state [temporary fix] or using Xposed + WakeLock Terminator to prevent GPS from getting WakeLock [So far has been permanent for about 1 month]
There's a couple of ways to address this. As noted, this is an issue with the play services abusing the GPS. In addition, it's a problem with the stock firmware. As I am sure you want to continue using GPS, these options allow you to leave it on.
In the GPS configuration, it's possible to reduce or turn off access to GPS to individual apps.
There are apps that allow managing app permissions. You can use this to revoke access to various things. Use it to revoke play services access to GPS.
If memory serves me right, these don't require root.
I managed to get root back so what I'm experimenting with is the app ops settings. I'll report back with an update. Thanks for the ideas guys.
For the past few months it would appear that more often not the Google App is showing keep awake times of around 12 hours a day.
Anyone have any idea what is causing this and how to resolve?

you need root. That way you can go to app permissions and turn off location services for ALL the google apps using it and you are good to go. i did it today itself
I turned off all the "OK Google" stuff under Google Settings>Search and Now>Voice>"OK Google" detection and it no longer stays awake like that. Now the Google App doesn't show up on my battery stats at all. Before it was sitting at 12-15% of my battery. I know it isn't a great work around if you like talking to your phone though...
