LTE works, cannot place calls - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

To start my phone was working fine using Sprint
I decided to see how T-Mobile Service was in my area by using a T-Mobile SIM, it was awful.
So I poped my Sprint SIM back in and I thought everything was working fine. Then I noticed that my LTE data works but I cannot make calls.
When I try to make a call it will switch to 3G with 3 bars and say Searching for Service.
I have tried several factory resets w/o any resolution.
My phone is not rooted
Nexus 5, running 4.4.4 Stock..
Suggestions please

*#*#4636#*#* what is that set to? If you set to 1x only, can you make a call?

I have never used another Sim, my only advice is call Sprint and see if they can issue a reprovision on your line. If they can't help you, try to RMA the device. If you flashed a stock image and still have the problem... The problem can only really be in two places, the hardware or the service provider.
Also, I'm pretty sure you checked but make sure your Sprint APN is correct and active.

I do not have access to that..Access Point Names is not an option when I get to the Mobile Network Settings Screen..
The other thing that bugs me about that is when I go to http://www.mcc-mnc.com/
I see this and do not know what's the most up to date even if I did have access:
MCC MNC ISO Country Country Code Network
310 2 us United States 1 Sprint Spectrum
310 120 us United States 1 Sprint Spectrum
311 490 us United States 1 Sprint Spectrum
311 880 us United States 1 Sprint Spectrum
311 870 us United States 1 Sprint Spectrum
312 190 us United States 1 Sprint Spectrum
316 010 us United States 1 Sprint Spectrum

Don't think it goes by date maybe an area code or zip format..? For example I have 310-Tmobile and I live on the east coast of the United States. Do you also have the Google Play edition N5 or the one from Sprint? Our experiences may vary because I have a Google Play Edition N5.

Hmm, wonder if the Sim card holds the information and when Android detects Sprint APN, maybe it disables itself? So if you can't change the APN, it's probably not wrong. Definitely contact your service provider and have them took a look at resetting the connection to your phone.

I just left the Sprint store, they had no idea what was wrong with it... I even had to show them how to get into the service menus

if you dont mind wiping the phone completely and flashing the stock images, give that a try. it worked for my friend when he did that.

....
doing those steps afterwards, now, you can get lte still, but make no phone calls..?
just making sure..
sometimes, when I switch to my truphone sim card which uses tmobile,
these are the steps I have to perform to grab sprint back properly, the rebooting twice, & apn select (which I rarely complete) does it..
rebooting twice with my sprint sim back in usually corrects it; sometimes it's set to global & searches for truphone even when the sprint sim is in, yet another reboot fixes it..

Change *#*#4636#*#* to LTE/CDMA Auto PRL and see if it works. Try CDMA auto as well and maybe CDMA only. Another option is *#*#72786#*#* which completely wipes your data programming. That may work.

This, this, and this. This is essentially a reprovision. If this doesn't work, (and again, you said you flashed the factory image, right?) I would RMA this device since we haven't even hit a year yet.
Precautions to take before RMA, flash factory image, lock bootloader, reset tamperflags. Check General for more information.
Edit : Factory reset as in just wiping the user data will surely do nothing for this problem, you're going to need to default back to a clean stock ROM and see what happens then (to clarify, I wasn't sure if you had performed a factory reinstall or a data wipe)

Signal/Network problem

Hi guys,
I've been having this problem with my N5.
Its a d820 model, unlocked and rooted.
I have no signal, cant register to the network either.
I can use wifi with no problem too.
I changed the micro sim card with other carriers, same issue. I asked for a new micro sim to my carrier too (not cut), but still getting the same problem.
It's worth mentioning that the micro sim works flawlessly. Im using it everyday on an HTC One S and signal and data works perfectly.
When I first get the simcard on the N5, it asks for a reboot, after it comes back up, it shows strong signal, but I can't make any call or receive, no messages either.
After a few minutes, the signal goes down and it shows only emergency calls.
Going into mobile networks and searching for my carrier takes quite some time, but no matter how many times I try to select my carrier,it always comes back with not able to register in the network.
I did a factory reset, and went back to stock, and then performed the system updates to 4.4.4.
I flashed a couple of radios as well, but no luck.
The IMEI shows well, and its the same that shows on the box, so I guess no problems there with a corrupt IMEI.
Has anyone else had any problem like this? Any suggestions?
I've been reading some threads here, and I still have to try a different kernel/ROM, but if anyone else knows of a similar situation, I would appreciate any suggestions.
May be it has something to do wid preferred network...
If u use 3g go to dialpad
Type
*#*#4636#*#* phone info
Select modem as wcdma only...
If u use lte select lte only... See if this works
I think I already tried that, but cant remember for sure
Will give it a shot, thanks
Is the phone second hand?
Have you checked if the IMEI is blocked by the network?
sounds like you bought a used phone that has been blacklisted. if blacklisted, your phone wont work on any US carrier, and many Canadian carriers.
Yes its a second hand phone, and I don't know if it is blacklisted on USA, but Im in South America, so that shouldnt be a problem
And there are no carriers here working with N5 so they cant blacklist the IMEI either
(This doesnt mean that the phone doesnt work here, actually, my wife has another N5 that works like a charm here)

the carriers dont have to work with the n5 to blacklist it. in other words, they can blacklist any phone that connects to their network. as soon as you connect to the network, they know your imei and other info about your phone. anyways, they blacklist your imei, so when your phone tries to connect, it cant. the agreement that carriers have in the US and Canada, could possibly be for all of the americas, or, in south america, they could have their own blacklist.
---------- Post added at 12:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:23 PM ----------
googling, i found that carriers worldwide are sharing blacklists.
The GSMA, an international association of wireless carriers, also keeps a database that wireless carriers worldwide could check to prevent stolen phones from being reactivated on their networks.

I will check on that, I think I can just call my carrier and ask if that IMEI is blacklisted or not

yup, thats the best thing to do. the people that first answer the phone, customer service, probably wont be able to help, maybe someone in tech. or, use this website to check(there art other sites as well).. http://swappa.com/esn
Well I just checked. IMEI not blacklisted on my carrier, also checked with swappa, not blacklisted either.
I used the *#*#4636#*#* to select wcdma as well as other options there, but still no go.
Also, under Mobile network settings, changed the preferred network type to LTE, 3G and 2G, but no luck
Tried Choose automatically the network, but still getting the message that its unable to register to the network right now and that I should try again later
I guess Im left with flashing some other ROM/kernel to see if it helps, unless someone has any other suggestions

also, what kind of nexus 5 is it, a d820 or d821? it would make a difference signal-wise. ones for north america, ones for europe. honestly, i have no idea which you would need http://www.phonearena.com/news/Differences-between-the-two-Nexus-5-models-D820-and-D821_id48985
I don't know if the problem is with the carrier, since I'm using the very same simcard with another phone and I have data and network with no problem.
The phone is d820, but I know it works here (my wife has the same one), network 2g and 3g work well here, LTE is the only thing that won't work here with this phone but I don't care about that
I'll keep looking just in case, and I guess tomorrow I'll flash different ROM

If the problem is wid radio flashing a different rom won't matter ..
Have u tried flashing a factory image ?
I know flashing a new ROM wont help with radio, but I've seen that using *#*#4636#*#*, going into phone information and then Select Radio Band, gives me an error and force closes.
I've seen some threads about that, and someone saying that it was working on a CM ROM, so I was thinking of trying that in order to be able to select the radio band and see if that helps.
About the factory image, yes, I used the google images to go back to stock, and then performed the system updates.
Well I flashed Slim Rom, and was able to get into *#*#4636#*#* to change radio band. Tried them all, no change.
Played around with the preferred networks and no luck either.
I'm officially out of ideas, but I'll keep digging around to see what I can find.
Any suggestions welcome.
Also, I know that there is a known issue with the GPS signal on some Nexus 5, and there are a few videos on Youtube showing how to fix it (basically opening the back of the phone, and sticking a piece of paper under the connector).
Does anyone know if there is something similar happening with the radio? Does anyone have a photo of the phone showing which part would be the antenna?
One additional thing I noticed.
If I switch, or just take out and reinsert the micro sim, the phone asks for a reboot. After doing that, when the phone boots up, I see I have network (full bars), going into mobile operators, I can see my carrier, and I can register too. But I cant make or receive any calls or messages.
During this 10 minutes that I have this sort of fake signal, if I go into *#*#4636#*#* and phone info, I can see my carrier, but it doesn't show my phone number. Weird.
Lg nexus 5 network issue
i am facing the same issue with exus 5 .In my hometown in India, the phone simply shows "Emergency calls only" and shifts to normal working mode with full network coverage once i travel to other parts of my state (parts which probably has a better signal strength ,i dont know ).i have tried out changing the sim card and a factory data reset ..Both didnt help ..

[Q] Switching from Sprint to AT&T?

Hey Folks,
I have a Nexus 5, which I bought from the Play store and have been using on Sprint for the past year. I'm switching carriers to AT&T and would like to know if my device will work on their network. I went to an AT&T store and tried swapping out my SIM for one of theres but the "AT&T" logo didn't show up on my phone and I wasn't able to use voice/text/data. Then, when I tried swapping my sprint SIM back in I had a ton of trouble, in the end, the sprint store had to factory reset my phone to get it to work again. I guess my question is, are there any specific settings that need to be changed or a specific manner in which i switch the SIM cards to get it to work on AT&T? A Sprint rep told me it work on AT&T but that can't be right, the phone is unlocked after all. Any and all input is welcomed!
A lot of people here use ATT me included. You'll have to change your APN to ATT. You also will have to give them your phones IMEI. After that you'll be all set.

I used to switch sims between ting(sprint MVNO) and ATT since I work in areas sometimes that does not have att service, and I never had a problem going between the two. Did you try to reset the radio on the phone?

Hey guys,
I looked for APN settings on my phone and googled it but I couldn't find those options. I tried updating the profile before, updating the PRL, restarting it multiple times and turning the radio on and off. Also tried switching the network type between Global and LTE options multiple times, which only worked < 1% of the time. Finally, I went to the sprint store where they did a factory reset and now it only works on 3G (no LTE). This is a family plan where we're switching to ATT permanently. My sister is sending me some sort of "customized" SIM card for my phone (they took all of my phones info) that should work on ATT. When I go into ATT again to test out my phone, are there any specific settings I need to change or a certain manner in which I switch the SIM cards to test my phone if it works? I wanna test it with a random ATT sim first and not my "customized" SIM card because our ATT line isn't activated as yet, only sprint is.

Unlocked T-Mobile Data and Reception Dropping in and Out

I picked up an unlocked T-mobile G5 and I'm using it for AT&T... The rep at the store applied the APN setting for ATT but I noticed after I got a new SIM installed and went home the reception and data connection started dropping in and out.
Basically, when the phone is sleeping and then I wake it starts searching for network then gets reception then get a signal for a couple mins then drops again and searches. Since it's a T-Mobile phone on an ATT network is there certain settings that I need to turn off like VoIP, WIFI calling etc? Any ideas?
Wipe out all existing APNs and start from scratch? Use the NXTGENPHONE APN. I'm using an unlocked T-Mobile H830 LG G5 on AT&T and I have no problems. My sister's Nexus 6 uses the same APN no problems either.

So I followed your steps.. I wiped all existing APNs and entered the APN setting in the link you provided and used the NXTGENPHONE APN but I couldn't get data but just had reception to make calls. So I changed the name to AT&T and the APN name to phone and I get data and reception but it still drops in and out.
I went to ATT to see what they could suggest but the only thing they offered was maybe a faulty SIM card and switched it out but it's still doing the same thing... Has anyone experienced this? Should I do a factory reset maybe? If I do that, I won't lose SIM unlock right?

I was going to suggest a factory reset as a last resort. You won't lose the sim unlock; it's permanent unlock.
Troubleshooting is the name of the game and you'll have to keep having to try potential solutions until it's fixed.
Hopefully it's not a hardware issue with the radio or you'll have to swap it out and reunlock it all over again.
are you on 10A or 10D?
10D seems to improve the radio... but if you wan root/twrp make sure you do all that on 10A first before upgrading to 10D.
also, have you tested the phone in different areas? or just at your house and immediate area? perhaps it's just an issue in specific locations? what if you drive across town or something?

Performed a factory reset and issue is still there but slightly improved but I need to test it more... Basically, when I wake the phone it searches for network (not all the time but here and there) then locks a signal..

Is your Network mode set to GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto? If it's not area specific it might be hardware related.
How did you get the 10D update on AT&T btw?

Yes, my network mode is set to that setting. The person I purchase this phone from had T-Mobile and updated before they sold it to me.

Last thing to try is Mobile networks>Network operators>Search networks. Maybe manually choosing one might help? Enable Data Roaming?
Could be a hardware issue if not software.

Yeah, I tried that too.. Got back from Tmobile and they said that another person experienced the same issue couple weeks ago and they said that some G5s that are unlocked and used on different networks are still trying to jumping back on the tmobiles phone network hence my phone searching signals off and on...
Just wanted to give another confirmation that the LG-H830 works perfectly on AT&T (H83010D [BL,modem, system], rooted, unlocked). I gave up on Verizon and my fiancé now uses it on AT&T. She loves it!
Geez.. I got scammed. The person looks like they file a insurance claim on the phone so my ESN is blacklisted! Great! Lesson learned the hard way. Any suggestions what I can do? I saw that people are buying bad ESN phone on ebay as long as I post that it's a bad ESN.
OP, I had the exact same problem on T-Mobile after doing a temporary unlock. I took it to a T-mobile store and they tried swapping the SIM but that didn't help so they did a warranty replacement. Two days later I had a new phone and everything works again. I didn't (and won't) try to SIM unlock it again.

I did some research online on blacklist repairs but do you or can anyone give me some recommendations on it? Sucks cause even if I get it repaired I wondering if I still will have issues with the reception..
Anyone tried this site? http://www.imeifix.com/
I just tried the sim unlock as well. I'm a tmobile customer so I really didn't have a reason to do it. Just wanted to see if it would unlock.
Well it said it could not be unlocked and I, out of dumb curiosity tried the temporary unlock. It worked and said it is unlocked until August. I think roughly 30 days after I did it.
Well, later that day or the next my phone started doing the same exact thing. Signal dropping and searching. Furthermore though, I woke up to a warm phone today. Same as it gets when doing lots of app updates. I unplugged it from the charger and watched the battery drop 4% in only 15 minutes of standby (screen off, not using the phone).
I just flashed it back to stock and relocked the boot loader and will see if it fixed it. Was running rooted 10d when this happened.
I'm starting to think that sim unlock app is evil or something. I haven't put my sim card back in as of yet but will update if it starts acting up when I do.
Possible explanation?:
I noticed a T-Mobile diagnostic app try to gain root access during the weirdness which I had never seen before. Maybe the sim unlock gains a sudo root to do the unlock but on a rooted phone with a non stock root manager causes the unlock app to endlessly loop trying to gain access and thus cause a warm phone and signal dropouts? Just a hunch but would be interested to see what others think.
*** Ok so quick update, I put my tmobile sim back in and the signal is dropping in and out again. The phone worked fine before I tried the unlock. This is so uncool.

I think I may have isolated the cause. I disabled the device unlock app in app settings and rebooted. Since then I haven't noticed the signal drop out.
EDIT: Yeah, that's a big nope. I'm still experiencing the problem after a total wipe and reflashing using LGUP refurbish mode. It's still dropping in and out, sometimes three times per minute. +1 to never use device unlock app.
I'm on stock unrooted 10d btw.
Oh, and the same SIM card works just fine in my older phones.

For what its worth, Att doesn't use the exact same bands as t Mobile....you might want to research some threads on the Att LG G5.

Problems with customized device and Sprint

I flashed the crDroid ROM onto my stock g7 Power, no problems. Flashed gApps and Magisk, everything ok. I did all of this while the device was unactivated and with the SIM card not in it. Everything works fine. But when I activated the device on the Sprint network and inserted the SIM card, I get no data. I know people have said you can manually edit the APNs in the Mobile Network settings, but the problem for me is, there is no APN option in that menu. However, when I remove the SIM card, I DO see the APN settings option there, but of course the whole menu is grayed out because the SIM card is removed. Has anyone else been able to customize and root one of these phones for use on the US Sprint network? Should I use a different ROM? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Hey there... This is just a possibility...
A while back, I put my sister's CDMA sim into a custom Rom-ed phone. Couldn't add an APN for the life of me. And then, duh , it turns out it was because the phone radio was set on LTE/UMTS (auto)... Is your radio set for LTE/CDMA?

Turns out it was on "LTE/CDMA/UMTS auto (PRL)". I changed it to "LTE/CDMA auto (PRL)" which is what the Sprint network uses, I'm pretty sure. That did seem to change some things, but I still don't see any APN settings and I still don't have data, unfortunately.* I think this ROM is just not set up to work on the Sprint network? Maybe I'll try flashing a different one.

Did you ever get it going? When I install Pixel Experience + I have no apns at all. Not in system/product/etc or product/etc which is where they are supposed to be located. So I just paste apn.conf.xml in the system/product/etc and set 0644 then go to networks and internet/mobile networks/access point names and hit reset to default and data's on , reboot afterwards and it's all fine. What's your model # on your device? Also are you sure your sim card isn't damaged? When they crack sometimes it's impossible to see with the naked eye. And technically you're not on Sprint anymore you're on T-Mobile because they finally finished the deal and Tmo now owns Sprint. (Which is a really good thing imo) ;p if and when you do get your issue resolved be sure and save your apn.conf.xml and upload it to Google drive or something so you'll have it if you need it again. I noticed that the first APN xml files I linked you to I had apn.config.xml for the name and that's not correct supposed to be apn.conf.xml My bad on that. Sometimes I drink a lot of coffee. Please tell me more about CDMA also using GSM because they are two different technologies.. CDMA was used by USA military back in ww2 to send messages safely and GSM is what most the world uses. CDMA has always been more of a USA tech while GSM has always been pretty much what everyone else uses. They both send information in different ways. They do not work the same or together far as I know.
If you want to be more compatible with development use a GSM carrier like Metro, T-Mobile because GSM is what still rules the world far as phone tech goes. And we here in the USA only make up a small piece of the world far as development goes.

T-Mobile Note 10 Plus 5G

I unlocked my note 10+ 5g from t-mobile, but it won't get service with verizon.
When I install a non-tmobile sim, the software does not switch from tmobile for some reason.
Also Sam Mobile only has t-mobile and metro pcs firmware availible for the sm-n976u
Does anyone know if there is a way to get the phone working with verizon? Thanks.
-God Bless
Try clearing Sim card tool kit data.
Network reset.
Clear system cache.
Edit Access point names to correct values.
That's all I got but sure there's more. Never had use more than the above but never changed carriers. Verizon advanced tech support should be able to help... AT&T would.
The Verizon Note 10+ 5G has a different model number. So they probably won't allow the T-Mobile/Metro/AT&T version on their network

I think you're correct. AT&T is compatible with Tmobile but not Verizon according to B&H Photo compatibility charts.
So it look like AT&T is in your future. AT&T is easier to deal with anyway. Do not use a corporate store though, use over the phone or online AT&T.
It may be possible to change out the C port PCB for the Verizon variant. Yes that PCB controls internet access. I can't confirm this is the only difference though! That PCB is only $20 and relatively easy to change out.

It's gets service with att, but it still has the tmobile boot logo. I flashed the att rom, but it didn't help. The carrier is supposed to automatically switch when you insert a different sim card right?
I also tried *#272*imei# but it says "unable to process the request"

Is it on Verizon or AT&T???
My 60 second attention span is kicking in... now.
As for switching sims I never had to.
The boot logo is the least of worries.
Be glad you didn't brick it.

It's actually super difficult to hard brick a Qualcomm device, and even if it is hard bricked and only enters EDL mode, it can be fixed as long as you have the correct files.
There are too many safeguards in place between Qualcomm and Samsung - the average user will always be blocked from doing anything that would brick a device. There's really no danger in flashing firmware whatsoever

I'm trying to use it with att because it won't get service with verizon at all.
It's very annoying having the tmobile bloatware. Also it should be compatible with att's 5g, but it only gets lte.

So then I'm assuming that it did not automatically change over to the AT&T splash screen and bloatware when you inserted an AT&T SIM?

Right. It does not have a multi-csc mode for some reason. I thought all samsung phones had that by default.

Not all, no. But all U models should have it.
Have you tried doing a full Odin firmware flash including an AT&T USERDATA file?

Yes. That is what I meant by flashing the att rom. It does not seem to make a difference.

I'm guessing the only option left is to root the phone, and then start manually removing things.

My method doesn't involve root, no. You can't root if you've taken an OTA update in March of this year or later
I hope I can be of some help.
I recently ordered a Note 10+ 5G - Locked Verizon from a popular online re-seller. When I turned it on, I was greeted with an AT&T boot logo. I was pretty upset, but I though I'd try to get it up and running on Verizon before spending a couple weeks sending it back and getting a replacement. I tried Verizon's online software and I couldn't get beyond the IMEI change. It kept telling me that the Note's IMEI was what I was already using with my Droid, which was obviously not the case. So, I headed into my local Verizon store.
Nothing they did would get my 4G SIM to work, so they swapped out for a 5G SIM for free, then switched my hardware IMEI numbers and proceeded to have a some difficulty getting on the network. After doing a network reset, it seemingly worked. More on that below. I was getting both data and voice over network. I was able to transfer my setting, apps, etc from my Motorola Droid with Samsung Switch. The phone indicates both 3G and 4G signals as I travel around town. 5G is not available in my immediate area, though it is in some cities I occasionally travel to, but I'm unable to test that just yet. I become aware that there are differences between Verizon's 5G and other networks and it seems the non-Verizon phone I have is probably for the best in terms of compatibility.
Unfortunately, texts frequently take 10-30 seconds to send. Images, gifs and other non-text MMS can take multiple minutes to send and sometimes just fail. Other times the recipient will receive them twice. I feel like this may be due to the poor coverage at my residence. Further testing in areas of good to excellent coverage are necessary. I tried changing the network settings from Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Mode, but anything other than the default "GLOBAL" would result in a disconnect of data and voice services. The only way to fix it was Settings > General Management > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This would restore the Mode to GLOBAL and bring back data and voice services.
In an effort to remove the AT&T branding, I learned how to trigger a carrier switch, dialed the code and changed it from AT&T to XAA. That got rid of the AT&T boot animation and I was able to remove all but 2 stubborn AT&T apps. I noticed that my android version was 10 and UI was 2.5, so I set out to update.
This is where things got frustrating. Every attempt to update through the settings > software update was met with failure. Try again in 24 hours, it would say. I assumed this was because I was now using a Verizon sim on an AT&T firmware, but I wasn't sure. I thought I might be able to flash to a Verizon firmware, but after several versions and some more research, I learned that going from 976U to 976V was not possible.
So, over the course of several days, I learned a lot. I looked up the firmware releases on AT&T's website for the 976U and saw that they matched the T-Mobile and MetroPCS versions. So, I settled on a T-Mobile version of Android 11 / UI 3.1. It updated without any issues and even remained in XAA mode. No bloatware, no loading images, all settings and apps the same.
So, even though I have an unlocked AT&T Note 10+ 5G 256GB and you have a T-Mobile, the fact that we both have a 976U model, I think there is hope for you to get up and running on Verizon.
Hope this has helped.
