anyone able to use their tablet with calibre? i've got quite a large ebook library (36gb worth), and am having all sorts of problems getting it onto the notepro in a usable manner. when i plug in the tablet via usb, i switch it to mtp mode... calibre is supposed to support mtp, but it doesn't show up as a device.
i bought the calibre companion app which looked like it would do what i needed... except that it connects via wifi only and takes about 4 minutes per book to transfer to my tablet (and i've got thousands...).
or perhaps any other ideas on how to access a large ebook library? i'm kind of stuck with calibre after years of use and gigs of books all with custom metadata, covers, etc.

You do realize you can just copy the entire Calibre library folder over Windows Explorer onto a microSD (or internally) and set that as the main documents folder in Moon+, Aldiko or Mantano?
That's what I did for my 40.000 ebooks, anyway.

tried that with moon+, but it doesn't read the calibre metadata, rather pulls it from the ebook file itself. less of a problem with epubs and mobis, enormous headache with pdfs. i'm rather banal when it comes to cover images and correct metadata (not to mention any custom stuff that helps me sort through everything). that and the frequent app crashes made it a less-then-ideal situation.
i was, however, able to get calibre on my pc to recognize my notepro (that usually happens about three minutes after i post a plea for help online ) and the transfer time became acceptable. 500 books in an hour... i can spread that over a few nights to get the initial motherload on the tablet, and then updates should be no problem.
so far i am liking the calibre companion app for android. the searching and sorting is more what i'm used to from using calibre on the pc, and i haven't yet got any crashes a la moon+. the only thing that's sort of pissing me off at the moment is that cc is not a reader, just a library organizer, so i ended up opening the books in either moon+ or whatever, it has to 'add them to bookshelf' and tries to organize them as well. haven't researched it enough, but hopefully i can turn that functionality off in the reader.

I use Aldiko App and Calibre on the PC. Not sure this is what your looking for. Calibre manages you library and converts all your books to any format all at one time and I thought Aldiko used more than one format but I'm probably wrong. I converted all my books to the same format a long time ago and I use Aldiko to read them. Maybe one of these will help you out or lead you to something that will.

Is there a way to use the external memory card with Aldiko?
I just started playing with it so maybe I missed the setting but it seems that it only sees the internal SD.

I don't have a tab yet so I'm not sure about the internal/external card. I know that on my HTC Aria, all the books are stored on my external SD card. I have several hundred books on there now. I used Calibre on my PC to re-code them all to one format and the program auto pushed them to my SD card. I used this guide to get started.

When you install Aldiko it makes a folder on the SD card called Ebooks. Inside that folder is one called import. Make sure you push new books to the import folder. then inside Aldiko hit the minu button and select import. Then it will add new books to your library.

I recommend FullReader. It supports not only ePub files but also opens many other formats.
i was REALLY disappointed to see that the TF doesn't connect as a mass storage device one of the main reasons i purchased it was to use as an ereader (previously had the Sony Reader which was completely awesome)...i naively thought a tablet could run rings around an ereader
i have a large library which i manage on PC using Calibre, and every book (over 700) has customised tags which is how i navigate it...the first problem was that Calibre could not recognise the TF in MTP mode, the second was finding an ereader app that suited me, but THEN i found that all apps i tried either couldn't read my tags and the Calibre metadata, or (which is much much worse) they add a bunch of nonsense crap tags when importing books
i'm at my wits end! it really shouldn't be this difficult!
this is what i have come up with - if you have any other options, please let me know (and after trying, but failing, to find online solutions, i thought i'd list my half-arsed solution here)
EREADER APP
i chose Aldiko as my ereader app because it supports dual-page landscape view, epub, and pdf (but in single page view only)...i prefer the readability of Kindle app (but it has no dual page view), and i prefer the interface of Mantano (but you can't change the margin sizes and it can't connect to my Calibre server - though i do have my library in Dropbox, the interface of the online Calibre server has the ability to sort by tags)
SYNC
again, because it is an MTP device when connected to PC, none of my auto-sync PC programs will recognise it...for wifi syncing with my Calibre database when i am at home i chose WifiSyncr...it has only 1-way sync (which is what i want as i don't want my library changed by my tablet!)...the downside is that it doesn't 'sync' only changed files, it just copies everything over to the tablet every time you connect (around 1GB for me), but until i find something else this will have to do (i can always just unplug and use the usb/power cable, but i'm lazy)
ACCESS TO CALIBRE LIBRARY
i set up my Calibre server with a no-ip http address, and Aldiko connects to this flawlessly
USAGE
when i first used the 'import' function within Aldiko (or maybe it was one of the other ereader apps i tried), my ebook folder structure had been changed (!!!) with things like new folders created for authors' names - a consequence of the apps not reading the Calibre metadata and just using ****tycrapballs metadata info from some internet hell dimension...i found LegerCalibre, which is 100% perfection on reading my Calibre tags and metadata database - but that's all it does, it's not an ereader, just an interface
so this is what i'm left with:
-wifi sync my Calibre library when changes are made
-use Leger Calibre to navigate local library on tablet and open books using Aldiko
-use Aldiko to read books - but not to manage them, and ignore any Aldiko sort options
-use Aldiko to navigate Calibre server (if i ever need to)
the only other option i can see at this stage is to go out and buy the new Sony Reader and let the TF rot in the corner
addendum: the Asus MyLibrary app just craps itself, and the Asus Sync program only allows syncing of contacts and calendar - who the.f still does this!!!

I use Calibre and cool reader.
Cool reader does epub and kindle format as well as most other formats. I don't know about tags and things.
I have a pretty big library on a 32 gig sd card, which I stick in the pc to transfer books.
It sounds cool what you're trying to do! I wait with bated breath...
Give cool reader a try. it does good 2 page landscape and is very flexible with options.
I'm still struggling with basic conversions of PDF and swapping authors with titles across about 10,000 books, but I'll have a quick look at tags.
I would suggest that you visit www.mobileread.com, the developer of Calibre is actve there )there is a specific sub-forum dedicated to Calibre) and he is very forthcoming and helpful to those that have bought a paid version.

i did end up going with CoolReader in the end, and like you just using my SD card in a usb device so Calibre can access it directly
CoolReader works with opds online catalogues and Calibre has this capability...keeping your library in a Dropbox public folder you can use CoolReader to directly access it...it's pretty cool...let me know if you want more info on it

am using comicrack atm which looks great and fits images nicely, plus has a load of customiztion options. Navigation is a bit tricky though unless I organise all my books via comicrack pc app which is a massive chore.
So I was just wondering if anyone has any other recommendations for readers and for adding books wirelessly.

i use Comicrack. I tried PerfectViewer and Komic, but i prefer Comicrack better. How is navigation tricky? I have a folder with all my comics in it. If its a series, i create a folder within the comics folder for that series. Comicrack display my comics by folder with no problems. I havent had any issues with this app. Plus, you can use two different folders for scanning for comics.

My setup is the same folder wise, but the folder tree view is very minimal and you can't always see the full path easily.
That being side I think I can tolerate it whaat with the great border removal and cover view browser.
I guess the skip pages, ads, letters etc, only work if you scrape the comic info....not got it to work yet anyways
I use perfect viewer. Not found anything better and it doubles as the best pdf viewer as well (no lag)

Just as others, I use perfect viewer. I use AirDroid to transfer file wirelessly from my PC. I have Comics folder on my microSD and that is where I set up my library path to on Perfect viewer. It works fast, stable. The other feature I like it on is automatic double page conversion to single page.

When my wife had her iPhone, she was regularly updating her music on it by setting up her iTunes playlists, plugging in her phone, and happily watching while it sync'd, seamlessly and painlessly.
Now she's got a Galaxy Note, and as yet does not have her music on it, and it's driving her nuts (fortunately she still has her iPhone to plug in in the car, or I'd never hear the end of it).
So far the closest approximation I've been able to find for Android is Winamp: IN THEORY, you install Winamp on your PC and an Android device, and you can then create your library and manage playlists in Winamp on the PC, and then sync over cable or WiFi to Winamp on the phone. Easy, right? Just like iTunes?
Except, well... it doesn't quite seem to be that easy. I've got Winamp to sync between my DHD and my laptop... TRIED to do it on her Note and had a royal runaround of failed transfers until I found a suggestion to delete and recreate the pairing... that seemed to do it, and I set up a nice big playlist of about 400 Christmas songs for her, and left it to sync overnight.
Or not. She went happily off to work the next morning... came home in the evening and informed me that she only had a dozen or so songs in one "Christmas Tunes" playlist, as well as another empty "Christmas Tunes" playlist. GAH.
I'm not expecting Winamp support here, I already have an account on the Winamp forums... what I'm looking for is something better. DLNA players won't do it - I mean, I do that on MY phone, because I have a 6GB data plan... her 1GB data plan won't withstand that for more than a week. No, I need something that will make it just as easy as iTunes to create her playlists on her laptop, and then sync them all to her Note, without a lot of farting around and troubleshooting and headaches and support-forum visits. It doesn't even have to do WiFi, since the first thing she usually does when she gets home is plug her Note into her laptop to charge.
Please, for the love of all things, and to save a marriage... someone point me at something that will accomplish this, that (and this is the important part) I won't have to babysit for her!
(PS. yes, I did see the "music players" thread in the Apps forum... there's only one other that appears to fit the bill, and I'm going to check that out, but I don't want to spend all my time installing different players on my phone and computer so I can figure out if they're going to work for hers... and seriously, "Find me an iTunes equivalent" has GOT to be a more common question than my forum searches would indicate!)
I don't know about playlists, but you can just drag and drop the files between phone and computer.
You can also export iTunes playlists and then drag that into the folder with the music, but since I no longer use iTunes, I would have to Google for the answer a bit more.

I have just shy of 50,000 mp3s, many of them in "unknown" folder trees - very badly organized on the filesystem (I know, I know) but of course, easy to search in an app like Winamp or something else that reads the ID3 tags. Drag'n'drop won't work for her - this is a former iSheep we're talking about, remember
The last iTunes files died with her previous laptop too, so I don't have that to import (and that only included the very limited number of songs that were on her laptop anyway).
The one thing I really liked about iTunes was its "Keep library organized" feature, where if I edited anything in a song, it would automatically keep it sorted in an artist\album\songname.mp3 structure - I could highlight an artist's entire catalog, right-click, edit the artist name, and regardless of how scattered the files were, it would put the same name on all of them (amazing how many different ways people find to spell an artist's name), and plop them all into the same folder on the disk, using that name. I found Winamp lets me batch-edit, but it won't alter the file trees. I'm tempted to install iTunes on my desktop just to let it properly organize my filesystem.
I owned a Mac and an iPod once, but I had the capacity to learn something different when needed and desired.
Letting iTunes organise everything might be a good idea. I'm too finicky to let an artist's name be spelled multiple ways, I'd have a heart attack! I always made sure everything was correct from the get-go.
If you Google search a bit, there might be apps developed to sync with iTunes itself, even.

Is there no good equivalent of iTunes for Android? How do people sync their music on pc with their android phone who use players like foobar2000, winamp etc. We do not want to sync entire music folders from PC to phone. Rather looking for something that can identify music file tags and let us select criteria for syncing with the phone.

The main reason I bought the Tab2 (7.0") is to view FAA instrument approach charts. Since there are over 15,000 of them (reissued every 28 days) for the USA, I've created HTML pages organized in a tree structure (by state and then airport) to allow quick access to whichever one I want. I have all of this (PDF and HTML files) on a microSD card, and I have installed Adobe Reader for Android.
When I use this on a "regular" Android tablet (Acer Iconia A500, Nook Color/Tablet, Motorola Droid), it works just fine: Using the stock Android browser, I navigate the HTML pages to the one for the airport, and then click on a link to display the PDF. Adobe Reader fires up and displays the PDF just fine.
However, on the Tab2 (running stock 4.1.1), the stock Android browser attempts to fire up the Kindle reader (even though I've selected the Adobe Reader as the default), which then crashes. Note that I can navigate to these PDFs via a file explorer, click on the file name, and the PDF displays just fine.
OK, so I tried a few other Android browsers:
Opera (not Mini): This piece of junk (from other experiences as well) can't even display a URL of the form "file:///storage/extSdCard/.../index.html" on the SD card. Idiots.
Dolphin: A bit better; you can enter the "file:///..." URL and it displays the HTML file fine and navigates to other local HTML pages, but when you click on a URL that references a local PDF, that's an "unsupported" URL. Morons.
Firefox: I'm not fond of the UI, but that's a nit. Everything else, including displaying PDFs from HTML links, works just fine.
So, Firefox wins the race, because one contestant threw up on the track before the first turn, and the other just before the second turn.
Wow, that's a long way to my question: Does anyone know of a way to get the default (Android) browser on the Tab2 to not try to fire up the Kindle app when linking to a PDF URL? I've rooted, if that makes it easier.
