I interested in getting a Tab and my primary use for it will be reading documents and books. What are the best apps for the following formats:
PDF
epub
cbr/cbz
chm
djvu
I have tried quite a few of the free ones and so far they all suck for one reason or another.
If there is a good pay one, I would not be averse to giving it the ol' 24 hour test.
Tab comes with think free office app. Best pdf reader on android. For comics/cbr/zip use acv (android comic viewer). For books, kindle, nook, aldiko, there are loads
For ebooks, I really like fbreader. kindle and nook have really big fonts that I can't seem to shrink enough. fbreader doesn't have a store, but it can access calibre if you have it set up for opds.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'm looking into them. One format I forgot to mention is HTML. Is it better to convert that to a different format or search for a reader (or browser) for it?
I use ezpdf for my ebook reading. My current favourate with auto crop feature.
Ita difficult finding a good pdf reader. anyone tried good reader on the ipad? its a great pdf manager. Im going to email them to see if they are working on an android version. Adobe reader is good but slow. Others just feel cheap.

I work for a large newspaper company in the UK so I have access to hundreds of papers in PDF format, each day I grab my local one which is usually over 40 pages and around 120Mb in size.
The ONLY app which doesn't crash at the size of the PDF is the free office app that came with the Tab, pinch zoom or double tapping is quick & smooth and moving from one page to the next is seamless
the Adobe app never even opens the first page!
I use the built-in ebook reader, and could bend it to my will, also it supports epub
With a well setup calibre adding new books is easy as 1-2-3

Exactly, the ThinkFree office pdf reader is teh BEST pdf reader on android. It renders pages with no lag, ayman you can't have tried this if you think its not adequate, try it.

Have you tried ezPDF ? It works brilliantly on my Tab, it is great for reading technical documents in column mode (with double-tap gestures, pinch/stretch zoom, and horizontal scroll lock). The text-flow view is pretty handy too. It is fast, regularly updated...well worth the purchase
for ebook reading, i use aldiko. its on the market.
I use think free apps and Adobe pdf reader. Adobe pdf reader for android is free from the market.

For PDFs, ezPDF has by far the best features.
It remembers the page, it remembers the zoom, and it even can auto-zoom into columns and jump to the next column. It also can lock the horizontal position.
Unfortunately it does not have the best rendering quality, text does not look as sharp as with adobe's reader.
Adobe's is fine with the best rendering quality but still lacks features. Not even remembering the page-number is fully implemented.
thinkoffice is just a basic fast pdf-viewer that can not even keep the zoom-level.
Bloody sick of Thinkfree Office - it doesn't remember the zoom level across the document! I need to double tap repeatedly for each page to make the document zoom to page width. Going to try EZ PDF and sees how it turns out.
Ezpdf is the best android PDF reader period..

Another vote for ezpdf. They recently added annotation tools launching this pdf viewer back to the top of the stack for me.

Ahh.. thanks for the tip, just tried out ThinkFree for PDF, never thought of it before. Works great with no lag! Was previously using Aldiko for PDFs and while they opened fine it was really laggy.
Hello Guys!
I am planning to get one of the Transformers (probably 32G+dock) and sell my notebook (will still have a desktop computer).
Now, I'm on a performance notebook (with piss-poor battery life), but I do not use it - only for web surfing, chat, watching movies, sending stuff & downloading - and maybe some games (1x a month LOL)
So my question is - what are the features you like or MISS in the Transformer compared to a notebook.

Text selection. Android NEEDS a better text selection desperately.
Other than that it makes a pretty good laptop replacement for simple things. Using remote desktop to a windows machine, greatly improves #1, and moderately improves #2.

firefox is available in android, and you can add the adblock plugin.
also a system-wide adblock via apps.
i have no idea what you would qualify as a "proper" audio player. unless you're refering stictly to that list as "proper", the stock player is also a proper player, as well as plently you'd find in the market.

Alt+tab works with the keyboard dock.
Windowed view won't happen until there is a significant increase in system resources available to these devices. Everything currently runs in full screen because 1GB of RAM is just barely sufficient for most of the current apps, and Android devices don't use swap, which means apps get flushed out of memory if the system starts running low on RAM. Windowed apps would crash or degrade under the current Android memory management scheme, which was instated because phones and tablets are so starved for resources when compared to traditional desktops and laptops.
Text selection requires a long press because click and drag on a touchscreen handles panning. I'm not sure what else you're expecting from text selection when many apps allow you to modify the size of the selection to your heart's content. Those that don't integrate nicely with Android's built-in text selection are the fault of the developers.

Well, Just as finalhit said - firefox has a plugin, and AFAIK Dolphin Browser, too. And by the way, Ad-free is not working on these devices? Like on my rooted Desire?
Proper audio player - I saw the transformer in action and the stock player is great, also have purchased PowerAMP for my phone and the developer says, it'll work on HC 3.2, too. Will see.
Carrying on with Text Input ~
Android needs to be able to support Rich Text in Browser Email Apps (e.g. Yahoo) and also Copy/Paste text into an Email.
Copy/Paste works in Gmail but not in say Yahoo Mail.
What I miss most, is that the TF does not have a digital audio output via USB.
A notebook can simply be connected with a DAC by USB and I can listen to MP3s over my Hifi system ...

I'd like that too, I tried plugging my USB SoundBlaster in but nothing happened.
What I miss most is a decent productivity suite, WP & Spreadsheets. I am using the beta of SoftMaker Office & it will do the job when it's released, but at the moment it crashes a lot & isn't mainstream.
Printing isn't that easy either ....
1) Definitely better text selection/manipulation - it works, but it doesn't feel right
2) Right mouse button - yes, it has long press, but it's long press, meaning it's not very fast. Make the right track pad button function the same as long press, and it will feel almost like a notebook.
3) Better file manipulation/transfer speed. Copying and pasting/moving files is a pain and is very very slow. Astro works, but it's nothing compared to the ease of windows/linux.
Android has all the functions I want, a lot of them just don't feel natural, or are cumbersome to use.
I like my TF, but I think it can't replace a notebook, unless we can port windows 7 on it..

Windows 8 might run on it, as it has arm support and the TF meets the minimum requirements that MS has released so far.

Documents to Go works well (given the limitations of the input methods, screen size, etc.)
Printign is a major issue. There are paid apps that I hear do printing OK, but they require a server program to run on a computer already connected to the printer. I have yet to find one that works well with a networked printer (either shared through the native Windows functionality or a dedicated print server).

You can indirectly output to a DAC if you use the HDMI port. I have an Asus VH238H monitor that includes a SPDIF out, so I just hook up the Transformer via HDMI and have the monitor output the sound to my DAC.
For printing I use CloudPrint So far it works greatly (home & office) on my Desire - so that won't be a problem.

Firefox for Android is very far from a proper browser (in my opinion, proper browser is for example Google Chrome and desktop Firefox) and it's adblock is far from it's desktop counterpart. Maybe the new version will be better. In my opinion actually Firefox is worst browser for Android (the best being Dolphin Pad).

Try using Amarok, Clementine, Exile or sth similar (or Foobar if you only have Windows, but it's quite bad looking). I tested most the music players in the market and none of them are even comparable. So I resigned from using Tranformer for listening to music and bought USB sound card for my laptop instead (without it the sound quality of my laptop was... well quite horrible ).
Amarok/Clementine/Exile have clear interface with your files or library on the left (you can use both) and a playlist on the right. You can add tracks to the playlist, remove them, shuffle them, star songs, generate playlists based on the stars, select to repeat a track or repeat the whole playlist, filter the library (for example - you type John and you get all John Williams albums listed), the playlist is created by drag and drop etc. Also they play all music formats (flac, mpc included). If you never used a music player like this - try them, they are really good.

Just because the default Music player doesn't show the now playing and playlist views on the same page together doesn't mean you don't have such functionality. Remember what you're dealing with here; it's just a 10.1 inch screen. It doesn't take much to clutter the UI with a lot of menu options, especially when all the UI elements have to be doubled and tripled in size in order to be legible on the tiny screen.
Now, as far as the features of the default Music app, there's plenty to keep most listeners happy. Upon starting the app, in the upper left hand corner you have the ability to sort your music collection by New and recent, Albums, Artists, Songs, Playlists, and Genres. On the right, you can Search through all of your music, refining your results by the previously mentioned sort categories. Once you choose a specific artist, for instance, you can tap once on the "All songs" option to play all of the artist's selected music, or you can just select one album of theirs to play, either of these options taking you to a list of songs added to the queue. Long press will allow you to add the selected songs to the playlist of your choice. Once in the now playing queue, you can sort the songs by name or by album, or shuffle the whole thing. Then once you finally play a song, the now playing screen allows for toggling shuffle and advanced repeat functions just like what you're used to with other applications. The default player also supports mp3, ogg, and flac, and probably some other formats that I haven't tried yet. The only thing missing is the ability to "star" your music, which is a feature I always saw as pointless.
Seriously, why would you even bother with third party music apps at this point?
And what about the microSD slot on the tablet? I'm planning to get a 32GB A-DATA - will it work normally like with my Desire?

I do use it as a laptop replacement. I find that 95% of the time I do not need to go back to my laptop; however, I do miss the ability to have more than one app on the screen at once (chatting and browsing at the same time is annoying). I also miss a full office program. I have tried DTG and polaris, and both work quite well by comparison to other office apps, but are not a replacement for MS Office or Libreoffice.
I also have a server in the basement for media serving running ESXi 4.1. I have 2 VMs on it: File/media server running ubuntu 11.04 and a windows VM for running various other things like video transcoding. I would not want to do either of those functions on an android tablet either.

i was REALLY disappointed to see that the TF doesn't connect as a mass storage device one of the main reasons i purchased it was to use as an ereader (previously had the Sony Reader which was completely awesome)...i naively thought a tablet could run rings around an ereader
i have a large library which i manage on PC using Calibre, and every book (over 700) has customised tags which is how i navigate it...the first problem was that Calibre could not recognise the TF in MTP mode, the second was finding an ereader app that suited me, but THEN i found that all apps i tried either couldn't read my tags and the Calibre metadata, or (which is much much worse) they add a bunch of nonsense crap tags when importing books
i'm at my wits end! it really shouldn't be this difficult!
this is what i have come up with - if you have any other options, please let me know (and after trying, but failing, to find online solutions, i thought i'd list my half-arsed solution here)
EREADER APP
i chose Aldiko as my ereader app because it supports dual-page landscape view, epub, and pdf (but in single page view only)...i prefer the readability of Kindle app (but it has no dual page view), and i prefer the interface of Mantano (but you can't change the margin sizes and it can't connect to my Calibre server - though i do have my library in Dropbox, the interface of the online Calibre server has the ability to sort by tags)
SYNC
again, because it is an MTP device when connected to PC, none of my auto-sync PC programs will recognise it...for wifi syncing with my Calibre database when i am at home i chose WifiSyncr...it has only 1-way sync (which is what i want as i don't want my library changed by my tablet!)...the downside is that it doesn't 'sync' only changed files, it just copies everything over to the tablet every time you connect (around 1GB for me), but until i find something else this will have to do (i can always just unplug and use the usb/power cable, but i'm lazy)
ACCESS TO CALIBRE LIBRARY
i set up my Calibre server with a no-ip http address, and Aldiko connects to this flawlessly
USAGE
when i first used the 'import' function within Aldiko (or maybe it was one of the other ereader apps i tried), my ebook folder structure had been changed (!!!) with things like new folders created for authors' names - a consequence of the apps not reading the Calibre metadata and just using ****tycrapballs metadata info from some internet hell dimension...i found LegerCalibre, which is 100% perfection on reading my Calibre tags and metadata database - but that's all it does, it's not an ereader, just an interface
so this is what i'm left with:
-wifi sync my Calibre library when changes are made
-use Leger Calibre to navigate local library on tablet and open books using Aldiko
-use Aldiko to read books - but not to manage them, and ignore any Aldiko sort options
-use Aldiko to navigate Calibre server (if i ever need to)
the only other option i can see at this stage is to go out and buy the new Sony Reader and let the TF rot in the corner
addendum: the Asus MyLibrary app just craps itself, and the Asus Sync program only allows syncing of contacts and calendar - who the.f still does this!!!

Cool reader does epub and kindle format as well as most other formats. I don't know about tags and things.
I have a pretty big library on a 32 gig sd card, which I stick in the pc to transfer books.
It sounds cool what you're trying to do! I wait with bated breath...
Give cool reader a try. it does good 2 page landscape and is very flexible with options.
I'm still struggling with basic conversions of PDF and swapping authors with titles across about 10,000 books, but I'll have a quick look at tags.
I would suggest that you visit www.mobileread.com, the developer of Calibre is actve there )there is a specific sub-forum dedicated to Calibre) and he is very forthcoming and helpful to those that have bought a paid version.

i did end up going with CoolReader in the end, and like you just using my SD card in a usb device so Calibre can access it directly
CoolReader works with opds online catalogues and Calibre has this capability...keeping your library in a Dropbox public folder you can use CoolReader to directly access it...it's pretty cool...let me know if you want more info on it

Probably due to thread prioritization, android tablets always suffer from pdf rendering woes. I was wondering how the tf700 fared as it has a more reasonable resolution than the nexus 10. I've heard that mantano has proven itself to be efficient in caching and rendering, but I don't know anyone with a tf700 and cannot check. Would love to hear experiences.
I prefer to use Perfect Viewer. Works fine for me, I read all my graphic magazines on my tablet as PDF.
I read a lot (both e-books and magazines), and the TF700 serves well. I use Mantano for my e-books (and sometimes for magazines), but it does stumble on full page imagery (actually it doesn't load it at all, and just shows a blank page). Repligo handles that a lot smoother! I've used Moon Reader+ in the past, but it did not feel quite as smooth as Mantano and lacks some features the latter provides, as far as I recall, although that may have changed since.
To be honest, the last few updates from Mantano's dev(s) haven't really brought anything new or unique, and performance seems to have degraded the last few months -- that specifically applies to loading an .epub of (very) large .pdf, for example; once you're in, it's all good.
The 700's screen resolution is really great when looking at graphs and such -- autopsy photographs, organs in all their splendor, radiographs ("X-rays")... Heh!
Does anyone have experience reading scanned books? Those tend to be 300-600ppi scanned images, sometimes clearscanned by acrobat pro.

Yup, I do. I'm using Aldiko Pro, file is a PDF. Performance is good, loading speed is very fast in my case

Did you miss the part where I mentioned graphic magazines? The ImagineFX, 2D Artist, 3Dworld, Expose, Photoshop Advanced, Digital Artist and Digital Arts Magazine are all full-res mags, they're exported at 600+ dpi directly from Indesign.

Short answer: Solo PDF reader (free, just a reader, no annotation ...)
Longer answer and background:
Coming from iPad, my main disappointment with my TF700 (and my other android devices) was/is the laughably poor performance in reading PDFs. Yes, they may load very quickly, and yes it can handle very large PDFs. I am talking about getting smooth and silky transition from one to another page or flipping through pages. After trying more than 10 readers, I settled on Solo PDF reader for reading purposes. As I said I cannot annotate them but it gives me the graphic performance close to what I had on iPad.
I don't know the details but it is insulting that my old iPad2 flips through pdf pages faster and smoother than my cutting edge android tablet.
I am sure not everybody share my sensitivity on this. But I am sure it is not a lot to ask. It is just baffling to me and I guess it should be a software issue in Android.

Yes they are, but they contain graphics and text as vectors, unlike scanned books which are single, giant images per page.
Matte paintings as vectors, that's a new one.

The images are obviously not vectors, but the magazine is a proper export that combine properly hinted and rendered fonts and not gnarly messes(if converted to vector) or solid image pages.
Ah. Well, not always. Thing is, they're not all from the 'official' (ahem) source. Most are actually just giant jpegs.
Guys use perfect viewer with the pdf add on. You'll never be disappointed reading a pdf ever again
Just another option that I didn't see listed - I've tried them all and personally prefer EZ-PDF Reader (I have the purchased version) - especially since it now supports dual-page pdf viewing, which is great in landscapre mode on the TF700 - can view two pages at once like a real book or magazine.... I believe that Perfect viewer with the PDF plugin does this as well.

EzPDF is great too -- I have used both EzPDF and Repligo and found Repligo to be a tad faster/smoother. I'll try Ez again, who knows?
Repligo FTW!!!!! ive tryed a lot of others and there simply s no substitute for repligo pdf viewer.
While it might not be the fastest, Mantano is doing a great job at organizing collections and keeping track of what I am reading at the moment.
anyone able to use their tablet with calibre? i've got quite a large ebook library (36gb worth), and am having all sorts of problems getting it onto the notepro in a usable manner. when i plug in the tablet via usb, i switch it to mtp mode... calibre is supposed to support mtp, but it doesn't show up as a device.
i bought the calibre companion app which looked like it would do what i needed... except that it connects via wifi only and takes about 4 minutes per book to transfer to my tablet (and i've got thousands...).
or perhaps any other ideas on how to access a large ebook library? i'm kind of stuck with calibre after years of use and gigs of books all with custom metadata, covers, etc.

You do realize you can just copy the entire Calibre library folder over Windows Explorer onto a microSD (or internally) and set that as the main documents folder in Moon+, Aldiko or Mantano?

tried that with moon+, but it doesn't read the calibre metadata, rather pulls it from the ebook file itself. less of a problem with epubs and mobis, enormous headache with pdfs. i'm rather banal when it comes to cover images and correct metadata (not to mention any custom stuff that helps me sort through everything). that and the frequent app crashes made it a less-then-ideal situation.
i was, however, able to get calibre on my pc to recognize my notepro (that usually happens about three minutes after i post a plea for help online ) and the transfer time became acceptable. 500 books in an hour... i can spread that over a few nights to get the initial motherload on the tablet, and then updates should be no problem.
so far i am liking the calibre companion app for android. the searching and sorting is more what i'm used to from using calibre on the pc, and i haven't yet got any crashes a la moon+. the only thing that's sort of pissing me off at the moment is that cc is not a reader, just a library organizer, so i ended up opening the books in either moon+ or whatever, it has to 'add them to bookshelf' and tries to organize them as well. haven't researched it enough, but hopefully i can turn that functionality off in the reader.
