As everyone on Verizon Wireless knows, unlimited data is becoming a thing of the past. There are a lot of tricks out there for upgrading your phone and keeping your unlimited data.
Not everyone knows about this loophole, which is why I'm posting it. So please do not post here saying "well everyone knows that." After posting this in a couple places, I've had plenty of people say "wow, I didn't know you could do that!" So anyway, without getting any further off topic, here it is:
Ok so let's say a new phone was just released on Verizon and you want it bad! For the sake of this post, we'll say the LG G3 since it seems to be the hottest phone out right now. Let's say Verizon has it for $199 on contract for 2 years. You want this phone really bad, but you are like the majority of us that simply don't have the money to buy a phone at full retail. Here's what you do, easily laid out in a few steps.
*All of this can be done either in the store, or online.
Precursor:
1.) Know what phone you want.
2.) Be the person in charge of the account, or at least be added as an Account Manager.
3.) Have available an old feature phone (dumbphone, flip phone) that can still be activated on Verizon's network.
Instructions:
1.) Add a new line to your account.
2.) Purchase the G3 on that line for $199
3.) Switch the G3 to YOUR unlimited data line.
4.) Activate the old feature phone on the new line.
5.) Turn the power off on the feature phone and never use it.
6.) Profit!
Some things to note are that YES you will be paying for that feature phone line, for 2 years. You will only be paying $10 a month though. Which adds up to $240 for the 2 year contract.
Now let's do the math for this, to see how much you're saving. For this part of the post, we'll say the G3 cost $600 off contract (most new phones are $600 - $700).
New line with new phone = $199
Price of new contract with feature phone = $240
Switching phones = $0
Total = $439 for a phone that would cost $600 off contract. You save money, you keep your unlimited data. After 2 years when the contract is up on the "feature phone" line, drop that line, then do it again.
If you have any success stories or if you know of another full proof loophole, please let me know. If you have any questions about the loophole I posted, please ask below! Thanks!
**Edit**
This method no longer works now as Verizon will require you to purchase a data package on the new line you're adding. The only way to continue with this loophole now, is to purchase the phone on a line that already has tiered data and a smartphone package.
This is great, but this loophole is only valid until August 24th 2014. After that, if you renew your contract on that line that has the feature phone, you will be forced to keep the 30 dollar data package for the remainder of the contract even if you switch the smartphone to the unlimited data line.

Ugh, I got all excited thinking I was going to cheat the system and save some dollars. Alas...

Yes if you renew your contract. Which is why you drop that new line, then add another after 2 years.

You have to renew your contract in order to get the new phone. And you can't just drop that line, unless you want to pay the etf.

No you're misunderstanding. You add a new line, do the upgrade stuff, after 2 years you drop the line you added. Then go back the next day and add another. You don't pay any ETF's.

Because you wouldn't save money.
Let's say, just for the sake of argument, that the LG G3 for Verizon will cost $600 outright. No contract.
Now let's say you use my method to upgrade to the G3.
Instructions:
1.) Add a new line to your account.
2.) Purchase the G3 on that line for $199
3.) Switch the G3 to YOUR unlimited data line.
4.) Activate the old feature phone on the new line.
5.) Turn the power off on the feature phone and never use it.
6.) Suspend the new line with the feature phone on it.
7.) Profit!
Some things to note are that YES you will be paying for that feature phone line, for 2 years. You will only be paying $10 a month though. Which adds up to $240 for the 2 year contract.

Switching phones = $0
Total = $439
For a phone that would cost $600 off contract. You save money, you keep your unlimited data. After 2 years when the contract is up on the "feature phone" line, drop that line, wait about a week, add a line again, and go through the entire process again.

You wouldn't be saving money. Look here: http://www.droid-life.com/2014/08/25/upgrade-verizon-2-year-data-plan/
You can't do the $10/month feature phone thing anymore. If you buy a smartphone on contract on that line, you are required to keep the $30 data plan for the duration of the contract, or pay the etf. This is what i was saying at the beginning.

OP edited to reflect changes.
Yeah by like 2 weeks. My original comment said the same thing, that this loophole was going away soon.

For $199, only to turn around and resell it on ebay for $500-$600!
Then I can have money for when HTC releases a phone that I reallly want, and works on AT&T.
It is only $199 with a 2 year commitment and a mandatory data package.
Good luck with that

Yeah, be warned: you end up paying a LOT for the monthly charges. (This is why, BTW, I've got my iPhone 3G without a full contract - that is, with one that allows for using any kind of T-Mo's subscription - even a BlackBerry one [which I use for my BB 8800].)
Though it could turn out to be a good investment...
I paid £99 for my iphone and kept it (still have it) and then bought a touch pro outright for £300 so if i did sell my iphone i would have equaled out, and im using the iphone sim in the touch pro to recieve my unlimited net etc.

Yeah, if you can make use of the 200/400/whatever minutes included in the price of the package, then, it's a good deal. People (like me: I only speak 5-6 minutes a month) not needing thtat much free speech time, however, end up paying a lot of $$$ for something that they don't need.
In the U S , very few people ( generalized )spend $500 dollars on an unlocked phone and then shop around for a carrier. The carriers subsidize the phones and then lock you into a conrtract long enough to get the full price of the phone back and then some. By the time your contract is up, new models are out and your phone is all but worthless.
A phone, like a PC is not an investment, at least here in the US it is a disposible commodity.
Just FYI for everybody, I have a unlimited data plan already, for my Kaiser.
AT&T pretty much made me get it, because they put some $170 charge on my phone bill, claiming that I downloaded AT&T Navigator.. 17MB worth of it.
I didn't have the program installed, nor did I ever download it. I would know if I did, plus I would just connect via activesync if I really wanted it, and transfer over the .cab.
Anyway, they had proof I did, I had proof I didn't, so in place of the $170 charge, they said I can keep a data connection for 3 months and I will pay $90 instead of $170.
Also I've got 3 people on craigslist that are willing to pay $550 cash for it. Woo.
In a nutshell, all I paid was $217 (price plus tax) and a $25 data package, which replaces my current one of $30. So actually, I'm saving $5/month.

I just did the same thing with an 8gig iPhone here in canada. Fido (canadian carrier) was selling it for $199 with a 3 year agreement. I had $200 in Fido Dollars (reward program) which I used towards the purchase, so it cost me nothing (except for the taxes). Sold it the same day (unopened box) for $510.
Easiest $500 I ever made!
I've been with Fido for the past 6-7 years, so I'm not planning on jumping ship anytime, so I didn't worry about the agreement I signed. And they didn't force me to get a data plan. I kept my existing plan.

Okay , now you have a new three year plan, $ 60/mo for 3 years = $ 2160, and no phone to go with it. Now you can't get another subsidized phone with a plan, because you already have the iPhone, which means you are going to have to buy an unsubsidized one , Diamond II = $ 575.00 + 2160 = $2735 over the next three years.
Now I must be dense, stupid, how are you making out ?

Well, your math is wrong - he sold the iPhone for $510, so if he buys a Diamond II for $575 he has only put out $65 - and he needs and will use the call/data/text plan for one phone or another, so he's paying out the $60/mo regardless, but now will be using the phone he really wants, and essentially obtaining it for only $65.
I think he is smart. I have an iPhone 3G 16GB myself right now, but as soon as Touch Pro 2 for U.S. is available, I will do a similar gambit. And I only get locked in for 22 months with AT&T.

It was a generalized reply, seeing as the op and others reading this will not have their " fido bucks " to spend. So let's say that without the fido bucks, you and I are into a new Diamond for $ 265 ( your math ). You don't think that if you went out and just bought a subsidzed Diamond, with a 3 year plan it would cost you $ 265 ? And without the Ebay fees and general hassle of selling and shipping the new iPhone, along with, as far as AT$T is concerned, violating their TOS by signing a new contract for one phone but actually using the sim in another phone. Grounds for termination of service if you get caught.
More power too you all , I am not criticizing , I am just pointing out that I do not get it ?
Can't people by an Iphone from AT&T without a contract for $500?

I don't think AT&T cares as long as they keep getting their phone and data and text fees each month. I have swapped phones at AT&T corporate stores, I have bought and sold subsidized phones (I like to play with new gadgets, and I'm still looking for the "ultimate perfect phone for me") - AT&T never gives me any trouble as long as I keep using my family plan (5phones), data plan, and family text plan.
I've just sold off a Tilt and a Fuze in the last week, and previously bought and sold 8125, 8525, another Tilt, an i-mate 8502, an HP 914C, a couple StarTreks . . . Sometimes I make a little, sometimes I lose a little - but it's kind of my hobby, and I keep using the call/text/data plan regardless.
That's just me - YMMV.

My wife has a full data plan for her AT$T iphone, which was mandatory with the iPhone from AT$T. My Tilt data plan ( on paper ) is the same but costs $ 10 dollars more. I don't know what the difference is, but I know they are not interchangable. ( I asked ). And they have been pretty strict about eligibility for a subsidized phone with me, ( also a family plan 4 phones )
My wife's contract has been up since Dec, but she is sticking with her iPhone, my Tilt contract is up next month, I asked them if I could use her eligibility for a new phone for my account and just extend my account for another two years and they said no. Against TOS to change phones within contracts. Go figure. If there is a way to make money from buying and selling phones, AT$T will find it before we do, I am sure.

I only did it because I had the reward program bucks, so it was an easy $500.
As for the plan, I still need a plan (for whatever phone I am using), and I am currently perfectly happy with my Kaiser.
I can buy another subsidized phone after 21 months in the agreement, so I can buy another phone (discounted) if I renew my agreement at that point.

No I am not locked in to a Kaiser plan. The plan can be used with ANY GSM phone... It's just a plan that I would be paying for regardless of the device.
I can use the $500 to subsidize whatever phone I want! The best phone I could get from Fido was the iPhone... so essentially I traded that for my choice of phones.

if you added a line and got the contract pricing wouldn't you also have to sign up for a data plan, which then cannot be removed without breaking the contract and incurring ETFs. then it'd be $10 + $29.99/month......seems buying retail would be better/equivalent to that.
ebay is always an option, but since it's so new it would be quite difficult to get anything much less than retail cost.
i don't know much about it but i've seen mention of early upgrade fees on verizon, maybe you could talk to verizon employees and see if you have any options there. i haven't had much luck with them but people have posted about experiences with verizon people where they are really accommodating and friendly.

Back when I got my Droid 1, I was only 12 months into my 2 year contract. VZW let me do an early upgrade but did charge me a $20.00 fee. I recomend you calling *611 from your phone.
good luck !!!
Verizon did the same with me for my tbolt. I was 13 months into contract, they let me upgrade for 2 year contract price + 25.00$

Buy retail or try to get an early upgrade...
it is actually really annoying. everyone always wants the latest phones and cannot wait to get them... and then they scramble to find the best way to get them when they still have "x" months left in their contract (x usually being greater than 6, closer to 12).
at that point, why not just get a 1 year contract to begin with. pay the extra $70 for your device up front but then have the freedom and flexibility at 10 months to do as you choose (and be able to get a new device without trying to "work the system" and weasel your way out of a contract or find some fishy way to add another line). you will end up spending more if you do not get a 1 yr contract.
I am a firm believer of this!
*EDIT*: and Verizon does not always allow early upgrades for 2 yr contracts, so you cannot rely on that

That, I'm never getting another phone at a two-year contract ever again unless the whole market system changes with it, which i dont see happening.
Regardless, if you are stuck in a contract, do the add a line thing, as with that, you can get the new phone on a new line, then switch it over to a crappy cheap phone that doesn't need a data plan, and disable everything on it, so you're only paying the $10 a month for an extra line.

maybe i'm not well-versed on verizon's contract terms. are you all sure that the contract doesn't forbid cancelling the data plan? i was basing my knowledge on an experience with at&t more than two years ago, haha. at that time i did the secondary line upgrade to get a new blackberry and at&t's terms were that in order to get an upgrade price it is required to sign up for a data package. the loophole there for me was that the data plan could be cancelled after two months at no cost at all. later on a friend who tried to do the same thing as me could not because at&t changed their policy and would not allow people to remove data plans after two months without an ETF.
is verizon's policy better and either doesn't require a data plan upon upgrade or allows you to remove it immediately after upgrading? (note: i tried to look up verizon's policy on this by going to the site and pretending to be a new customer but it started to ask for payment and personal info before showing me the terms and conditions. it did require me to sign up for a data plan when purchasing a smartphone though) i'm curious to know what the fine details are.

make sure you have an older dumbphone to transfer your existing line to. then you can drop data to your heart's content.
i have done this twice now, once for x and once for thunderbolt. $10/mo each.

(note: i tried to look up verizon's policy on this by going to the site and pretending to be a new customer but it started to ask for payment and personal info before showing me the terms and conditions. it did require me to sign up for a data plan when purchasing a smartphone though) i'm curious to know what the fine details are.

From the experiences I've had and others who've posted about it, the only restriction AFAIK from verizon is that you need a data plan on the line when you activate the phone on that line, so you'd need to add a data plan on the line when a smartphone is activated for it. However, if the phone isn't a smartphone, i've been able to add and remove the data to the line as needed (I've had an old enV phone where theres been a few times where I've needed the data, so I've just turned on the data plan for the two weeks or so, and never gotten charged outside of that, or fees)

i have an old blackberry pearl flip, does that count? seeing that it is a blackberry i would think it doesn't......
but a follow-up question i have is that is it worth it paying the extra $10/month? price speculation for tbolt: $319 for 1-year contract, add the $10/month for a year = $120 for a total of $439. retail is $599 so you save $160.....as opposed to paying $319 alone and saving $280. i guess for someone with an upgrade available the method of adding a line and then moving the new phone saves you an upgrade and costs $120 more to get the tbolt. so you are paying an extra $120 above the cost of the phone itself to save your upgrade.
makes more sense for someone with no upgrade option then.
But i didn't think it could be just 10 dollars a month. The phones are required to have their own 29.99 data plan

Or call Verizon and tell them you no longer want a phone on that line and they'll put a dummy ESN on it. That's what I did the last time I pulled the add a line and drop it for a discount.
It turns out I'm eligible for the early upgrade on 5/10 of this year which puts me on my incredible for 1 year. My full upgrade is up on 1/10/12. So I guess I'll see what's out there in May. Thanks again.
just keep calling *611 and get someone that is nice. after 4 calls to CS i begged the lady to ask her supervisor to advance my upgrade (from Dec.). I paid the $20.00 fee. good luck.
I found an official document on verizon's FAQs under "Worry Free Guarantee". Easier to get to through google. When I have the link I can post it.
Basically it states that if you are in a two year plan already you will be able to take advantage of one more annual upgrade at discount price or if you so choose wait until your 20th month and get your "New Every Two" credit.
I had to print this sheet and make sure the full url was across the top in order to show it to a verizon rep. He then put a remark under my account stating that I was indeed elgible for an early upgrade. The problem is just with the changes verizon is now implementing.

I bought my thunderbolt on craigslist for $540. Was a little shady as the guy didn't have the box, but had all the accessories Verizon employee maybe? Just can't imagine how a day old phone is missing the box. Anyway I activated the phone with no issue.
When you guys are paying the $20 or whatever to get the early upgrade, so they just reset your account so that Wirefly/Amazon/etc see you as upgrade eligible, or do you then have to buy the phone from VZW? I'd like to upgrade 4 months early (and have multiple lines to upgrade, so the "new every 2" would only take care of one phone) but I don't want to pay VZW an extra $50/phone if I can avoid it.
They are sadly apparently getting rid of the annual upgrade feature Anyway should you want to go the full retail route I got mine cheapest through VZW at 599.99 vs the 749.99 it seemed to be listed everywhere else. I don't get my annual upgrade which they are still honoring for the time being until July of this year (still can get it should I want to grab another device this summer).
The only reason I could see to upgrade earlier than your annual upgrade date is in the off chance verizon changes the way they do 4G data plans for new 4G phones at that point? Currently they are offering 4G at 3G data prices w/ unlimited data, and they can't suddenly start charging those of us who are on these unlimited plans more or force us to the tiered plan concept... so we'd be grandfathered in sorta like the unlimited data AT&T users are currently. Was the main reason for me jumping the gun and upgrading early at full retail, that and the speeds are amazing.
I really want the Nexus S 4G when it comes out. I don't have any upgrades available.
The full retail price I expect to be $550 through Sprint. My thought is that my best option would be to cancel my current line, pay the ETF ($160 for me right now) and then immediately get a new line and get the Nexus for $200. This would be a total cost of $360.
I guess my other option would be to add a new line to my account, get the Nexus for $200, then cancel my previous line and pay the ETF.
Any other ideas? I just want to get the Nexus for as cheap as possible.

EVO 4g at Sprint $449.99

See image 2 posts above for $199.99 with 2 year upgrade / $399.99 full retail price.
Cheapest way is to sell EVO 4g for $200 by nexus for $399 plus tax.

The nexus will be $549.99 outright and $199.99 w/2yr agreement. Either way you go it can become rather expensive and I think the best way would to be add a line to your account and cancel the other. You will pay $200 for the nexus but you should be able to get about $250 or $300 outta your Evo as long as it's still in good condition. But that all depends apon the ETF!

This is correct.
The $399 refers to new two-year price or price with upgrade.
http://www.wirefly.com/eCommerce/phones/?&FilterByCarrier=68&mode=&
You can generally get a phone through Wirefly for the contract price without resigning or upgrading. Sell the current phone then put a few bucks more with it and you're all set.

Sprint technically won't let you ETF and sign a new contract and get the 2 year instant discount. Usually they require a 30-day period in order to be considered a "new" customer. Your best bet is to add a new line and then cancel the other line and pay ETF. You'll pay $199.99 for the new phone, $160.00 for ETF, and then sell your EVO for $250-300. Overall, shouldn't cost more than $60-70 to switch phones unless I'm missing something. You WILL be extending your time in shackles with Sprint for another 2 years though.
Myself, I plan on dropping Sprint all together (3 lines on a Family share plan) this summer and going with a local GSM provider. I'll be saving $60 a month and still get unlimited calling, txting, data. Saving $60 a month means I can subsidize myself and buy my own unlocked phones.

So I can't be the only one here, who has been in contract with Verizon since day 1 of the Thunderbolt hitting the streets. Since Verizon has removed unlimited data, and moved with alltell customers to loose their plans, I am wondering if come March those of us who will be the first people out of contract with Verizon with LTE will be getting letters telling us they have decided to move us to their wonderful tierd data plans!
I am only saying this because I really want to buy a Note II but I don't want to drop 500-600 dollars on a used one and find out that my service is getting changed, and have to leave Verizon for another carrier with unlimited data anyway.
So, any one worried about march?

I didn't say anyone said they would, I am just looking at how verizon does things.
Also, no one on unlimited data with 4G has had their contract expire yet, so no one can say they won't.
They are making the alltell plans go away, so why not the unlimited data ones as the contracts expire?
Sounds exactly like some **** they'd do too.
my tapatalk signature sucks more than yours
my parents just got divorced and myself and my brother have unlimited data plans. We had to alter our plan because of this. one sibling is on my fathers new plan, one is on my mothers new plan. we both retained unlimited data through this situation.
If they gonna force tiered data they are going to start in june 2014 just after everyone who preorder the GS3 to retain unlimited is off contract
iSheep... iSheep... Meowww that's Apple VZW GSIII
Just an fyi... I know many people here try to keep their unlimited data and hold off as long as possible to get their upgrade so they dont lose it. I had a thunderbolt that worked when it pleased for almost 3 months before i finally gave in.
When i went to get my s3 a fee weeks ago i found a pretty cool rep. I was with my sister as she shares an account with me and my mother. Showed the rep my beat up tb and he asked y i took so long to get my upgrade which i have been due for for nearly 7 months. Explained to him i had no intention of giving up my unlimited data because i constantly use 4+gb a month. But my phone completely died so i juat had to do it.
He pulled up the account and saw that my mother already ady had the tiered data on her line. At this point he told me that if i wanted to keep my unlimited data i could apply the upgrade to her line... So activate the s3 with her number, at which point the phone is mine...then he would deactivate it and read activate it with my number and reactivate my mothers line... So now we have 2 s3 will unlimited data and and ipone with 2gb cap on my account.
If you have multiple lines... One of which is either suspended or has tierd data this is an option you can use. If the rep you get your phone from isnt as friendly, apply your upgrade to the other line instead of yours... Call customer service when you get home and have them do it. Reps might be kind of iffy about doing this i was told its supposed to be unmentionable.

This has been the case for a long time. Many many people have used this well after unlimited data was over. Its kinda been unspoken to only refer to it in passing as an alternate upgrade or stealing an upgrade. The more people that use thus loophole the more likely Verizon will patch it.

How? Were you on a 1 year plan? There is no way that went month to month on a 2 year LTE contract.

Yes, it was a two year plan. It started out as unlimited 3g, and went to unlimited 4g about half way through.
I think everyone should be aware that unlimited data will be ending for ALL carriers sometime in the future, probably not this year or next year but certainly within 5 - 10 years.
The number of smart phone users is growing, bandwidth is not growing and the handwriting is on the wall, like it or not. No carrier has the ability to provide unlimited bandwidth to unlimited subscribers.
Fortunately for me, my 2GB plan is more than adequate, almost all my data use is over WiFi and I seldom hit even 1GB. One thing I've done to limit my data use is to install wireless 'N' routers at my house, my sister's house in California and my girlfriend's house here in Phoenix, those $20 swapmeet/Craig's List/Ebay second hand routers plus free WiFi at most places where I hang out almost eliminate my 3G/4G data use.

I think the problem will come up if you try to get a new phone at the 2 year contract price. They will likely try and force you to a tiered data plan when signing the 'new' 2 year agreement. You would likely be able to get around it by paying outright for a new phone (no new contract to sign), but that's if you want to pay the $500-600 to do so.
I understand why Unlimited Data is on its last legs for all carriers, I just wish the tiers were more reasonable. I don't consider myself someone who abuses the network, but I am away from WiFi often and use about 6-12 gigs a month. I'd have to pay an insane premium to have that capability again. It really feels like a huge step backwards and contradicts the cloud movement but I get it. I just don't like it. We need a breakthrough dammit!
I'll be sure to enjoy my next 1.5 years of unlimited service.

Depending on your data usage, it can be far cheaper to buy the phone outright instead of paying for a bigger data package over the 2 year contract. Of course you can always choose to change your data usage behavior and get the 2GB route which will be cheaper. I bet they're banking on people to do that.
But here's to hoping they lit the minority unlimited users remain as long as they're willing to buy phones full price!

I think that this is totally wrong. The teared pricing will go away as pressure mounts and people can move to local Wmax systems. I have unlimited and have had it since WM4 when it was "3g what is that". Many cities are gong Wmax (where I live Grand Rapids many areas are complete) this will totally eliminate need for Cell data. 4G consumes less electrical power, has greater bandwidth for the end user with less tax on there system than 3G. They are simply making money when they can. It is like all technology the General public is finally getting connected so prices are rising once saturation and competition meet prices will fall or stabilize.
I don't have cable internet at home anymore. 4g is faster and way cheaper, I am still at $24 per month unlimited. I simply turn the hot spot on and feed my home network. Granted Verizon hates me using 60+ gig a month so what.
I might have just been lucky. I walked into a Verizon store a couple of weeks after the GS3 came out to upgrade. I got the 2 year contract price and got to keep my unlimited data plan. He didn't even ask if I wanted to change it. I was so happy, I bought a couple of accessories that I could have got online cheaper. As far as I am aware they still get a commission bonus for that.
I have heard some horror stories of existing customers being forces out of their unlimited plans. Cell phones are one of the few things these days that are usually best bought in corporate stores.

well yeah we get commission on accessories sold, and salesmen make more on accessories than phones, which is why we push that whole, "buy 3 accessories!" thing
I was lucky too. I upgraded to my S3 back in August through Verizon and was able to keep my unlimited for some reason.
I prefer 4g, but if I was somehow forced to a tiered plan I could manage. I use 4G at home since it's faster than my WiFi, but I would just switch to WiFi at home.

Hmmm? But can you keep your current cellular number by doing that? I realize that the # is programmed into the SIM, but wouldn't you need another SIM to open another line before cancelling the old line? If you cancel the original line (and therefore number) how could you get the original # back? It seems to me AT&T ties a lot together with the phones (accounts) number.

You add a new line to your current plan, not keeping your number, so you'd at one point end up having two sims. I guess it's not a good option if you want to keep your number, but I use google voice for everything anyway so that's not a big deal to me. I'm personally doing it this way because my current phone has a shattered screen and the ETF is less than what I'd pay to replace the phone with insurance while it's about the same price to just repair the screen. Just an option if anyone is really looking to get rid of their phone and they're not eligible for an upgrade, remember it's $325 - ($10 * months completed in contract), plus you'd probably end up having two phones for a month, I don't remember whether they prorate or not.
you can add a line, they run a credit check unless your already approved for 5-10 lines, then no worries. So basically, they give you a new sim, you swap your current sim (micro) and call att to swap the imei's. Then tell them you want to pay the etf fee for the newly upgraded line.
199 + tax + activation fees (if waived) = 290 (est)
199 + tax = 250
250 (w/o activation) + 325 = 575
290 w/ activation + 325 = 615
Your only saving a few bucks so its all up to you.

I was thinking about buying the phone at full price (the 32 GIG version when it is released) and just swapping the SIM from my S2 Skyrocket to the S4. I would then call AT&T and tell them I am using a new phone so they can update my account and insurance and remain on my current contract (I have about 7 - 8 months left). Once the current contract expires, I will continue on a month to month basis or go to T-Mobile. If possible, I will buy the phone unlocked so I might have to get it at a source other than AT&T. This way I will be able to get the phone (at full price) but I won't have to terminate the contract early and will also have the option to leave AT&T (after contract) if I want.
Do you see any potential problems with this plan?

WTF? What happened to $579? Maybe I'm mistaken, but isn't that what they said right after the announcement?

That price was never confirmed.
IMO its best to call with AT&T particularly if you are a longer term customer. You can often sweet talk them into an early upgrade via phone where you cannot in the store because they don't seem to take the time you have been with them into account in the store as much so as on the phone. No idea why but that is my experience. Doesn't take long to run it by them so you have nothing to lose but a few minutes of your time.
is getting it from AT&T the same thing as getting the international? is there any differences?
also wouldn't it be fastest to wait outside AT&T's door on release day and pick one up in store, instead of waiting for one to ship?

this phone is too expensive full price, same with the galaxy note 8.0.

Well the upgrade date is usually 5 months ahead of time. Not sure if it can get any shorter than that.
