Currently I am using the custom rom Mahdi-Rom 2.7 [08/08]
I see that it has the tethering and portable hotspot under wireless network settings.
With tmobile, even though I have unlimited data, I believe they do have limit for hotspot sharing only 3gigs.
Can someone confirm that if we are using a custom rom, we can tether without our carrier knowing?
or we need to have some kind of VPN on the phone ? When I am out without wifi, I would like to use my phone's data connect to laptop.
The tethering and portable Hotspot is a feature of aosp. All roms has this feature since the oneplus one ships with cm which is pretty much aosp + cm features.
Depending on what your t mobile plan is, it has included tethering. So if you choose to tether, it will work.
If the carrier doesn't want you to tether and you don't have tethering on your plan then when you try and tether and a device connects to your portable Hotspot you will be greeted with a t mobile placeholder page telling you to get a tethering plan.

Edit: On the Nexus 5, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47203432&postcount=70
I have ported this over to the OPO http://d-h.st/Usv
So first set up a portable hotspot and connect to your hotspot via your laptop see what happens first.

I didn't know whether to put this in the "Android Software Development" forum or this one but does anyone know of an app that can preform reverse tether (with the help of tweaking the computers network) via USB and at the same time tether via WiFi.
ie: The phone will use the computer's internet via USB and then allow other devices to connect to the phone via WiFi and use the original computers internet. Basically turning the phone into a mini-router.
I don't know if this would even be possible. Seems like there would be a lot of data clutter. But I have seen apps out there that can preform reverse tether via WiFi on an ad hoc network.
I assume that if I can get at least the USB reverse tethering to work. I'd be able to use Froyo's built in WiFi tethering also assuming it uses the computers network and not default to 3G.
And the reason for even needing this app?
Is because 20Mbs > 3Mbs.

A Wireless G Router can be had for less than $20.00 - You can probably find a friend with an old one to give to you.

Why use the phone for this?
I don't know how to get it to work but on Android in a vm it says on the Android that the internet is being tethered to it through Ethernet I don't know If its an app ill take a screen shot later

I have unlimited data, and I also pay the extra 30.00 for the hotspot feature. For some reason when I try to tether via USB (so my phone can also be charging, and since it's generally more reliable) I seem to get the connection dropped within 60-90 seconds after I'm using it.
If I use the mobile hotspot app and just tether via wifi, the conniption works flawlessly. I was wondering if I'm missing a setting somewhere, or if the built in USB tethering is just plain crapola. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Never heard of such a thing... Perhaps the location where you leave your phone while its plugged in has poor reception.
Try leaving the phone in that spot without tethering and stream a long YouTube video or something like that...

Can't help, but have you tried the clockworkmod USB tethering app?
I just ended up installing FoxFi and it works just fine for USB tethering. No clue why the built in feature (for USB tethering) would crap out. Connecting wirelessly worked great with the stock hotspot app, but USB just didn't. I'm in a very strong signal area so it had nothing to do with that.
Greetings. I have been using entitlement hacks to enable the mobile hotspot for about 3 years now across many android versions, from JB, to KK, to LP. All this time I have always wanted to try tethering via USB to the computer via the native tethering app inside the stock rom but never thought it would work. Recently I bought a CradlePoint router that I have been using for WiFi-As-WAN. It has come to the point where speeds here are so fast that the limiting factor in my speed is the Wireless N interference in the phone-to-router bridge. If I plug in my phone via USB to my router (or any router/computer that uses "phone as modem") will it work the same way as wifi tether or will it try using a different APN or something and charge me for the data? I know nothing is 100% but if anyone has tried it I would love to know the results. Thanks.
If I run a 3rd party app for tethering like FoxFi will that go against my hotspot plan or my regular unlimited data usage.
This is what I am trying to accomplish. Being that I have unlimited data, at the same time, I want to use my hotspot. BUT not eat up my hotspot usuage. If that makes sense.

If your rooted use wifi tether router . I don't have a hotspot plan . I use it to play xbox one at work and home with no problems
As of midnight March 1st 2018 PdaNet+ seems to be blocked for users of Boost Mobile for the mobile hotspot feature. My girlfriend said that the hotspot quit working last night at midnight. When I got home I checked with both her device and my own and both now send you to the login page of boost mobile. I was able to work around it, by using the usb tether option in pda net. Then after connecting the phone to my windows 10 pc (tethered) I enabled the built in windows hotspot. To be clear the hotspot within the pdanet windows application did not seem to work. I am wanting to get feedback on if others are having the same issue. The two devices that I have that are affected are an LG Xpower and an LG Stylo 2. Also note that the USB tether option is not as fast as the hotspot option, so this is a major letdown since this is my only internet...
Pdanet
Yes, having the same issue with Pdanet and Boost Mobile. So frustrating since I don't have other internet options right now. Have you heard of any other apps that will work with Boost?
These maybe helpful.

Strange, I use Boost and around that same time Utorrent (tried Vuze and Bitlord too) lost their ability to connect to peers via my USB tether or Bluetooth. They would work with my hotspot but PDA has always been restricted by my monthly hotspot data cap (not sure if that's a universal thing) so I'll have to wait a few more days before I know if that's been cut off too.
My VPN (private internet access) stopped working as well. It gets to 'authenticating' and wont go any further.
Im not using a app, im using a custom rom, Wicked X and i an confirm my hotspot is not working right either. its unlimited plan but now it has a 8GB hotspot add on when that was never there. it appeared on March 5th for me.
When the 8GB is up i can only access internet on my desktop, and my tablet. nothing else. and my desktop, torrents and steam downloads dont connect and just sit there at 0.
My friend has stock rom with the mobile hotspot limit bypass through sqlite editor and his did the same thing mine did but a few days prior to me.
Im wondering if this has to do with Net Neutrality being Repealed.
Also phone i am using is
Samsung Galaxy S3 L710
His phone is
Samsung Galaxy S4 L720T
I'm having the same problems with all my devices lg stylo rooted on 5.1.1 and lg g3 rooted on 5.0.
Seams to me that Sprint/Boost mobile have caught up with us leaving us S.O.L.
I'm just about fed up with boost mobile and considering moving to Cricket or Metro. ?
use fox fi 2.19

Yes I am have the same from at&t has my hot spot blocked I paid for the unlimited plan but obviously it is limited they can control my phone
Boost Mobile hotspot - whether your paying for it or not(this works on several carriers including AT&T, Cricket, MetroPCS, be careful on tmobile), get pdanet, or use wifi direct built in if you can, on the device you want internet on either use pdanet to connect or manually connect.
Connecting Manually
--------------------------
go to WiFi settings connect to the direct-whatever-phone-name, go to wifi settings if it doesnt show options to change proxy settings and click to change proxy to manual make sure to tick the option if its there to use for all connections
proxy - 192.168.49.1
port - 8000
PdaNET+ & Boost Mobile
----------
using p2p/torrent will use your hotspot data and when you run out no more though, trying to find a way around this btw(if anyone knows msg me pls.)
using regular web doesnt use hotspot data
Cricket/AT&T
----------------
so far unlimited use, torrent or not
MetroPCS
------------
so far as far as i can tell unlimited, just make sure to hide tether usage in pdanet
