Introduction
It's 2014, and stock GingerBread is so boring, so you googled and found the best surviving Glacier rooting guide, upon the newest ROM list, but you saw the entries covered with dust, links as old as Fred Flintstone rolling towards extinction in a dinosaur powered car. You said to yourself, It's too late, the phone's dead.
Your lead is cold, and you don't feel like playing thread detective, so allow me to present, your best answer since the last phone retirement case...
Panache DD HoF Requirements
Well I do say old chap, we ought to have standards coming from a Titanic class phone, and thus...
Stability - The least crashes, freezes, and bugs.
Function - Every hardware function works with software. Buttons! GPS! BlueTooth! WIFI! Data! Camera! Speakers! Light! Sound! Action! all working as intended.
Battery - Efficient Kernel, combined with ROM must match or exceed stock battery uptime.
Compatibility - Common apps on the market works on the phone. (Youtube, MX player, Browser, etc)
Physical upgrades
We can rebuild him, with a bigger battery!.
SD Card: SanDisk ultra 64GB microSD from stock Samsung 8GB (iirc)
This was just an adhoc cheap fill one day on amazon.
Battery: Mugen 1700mAh Thunderbolt slim (similar size for MT4G/Panache) from stock 1400mAh OEM
Why? Stock died on 2013, charge held for literally 1 hour max, then battery started bulging.
Improvements: 48 hours uptime on light use, stock gingerbread 2.3
Also: Slightly bigger than stock 1400mAh, in length, fits very tight, no extra backcover required.
Alternatives: Anker batteries, use the search, I've heard they're the best upgrade and bang for your buck.
After Root Report
How I ate the breadcrumb trail, ROM after ROM; optional read..So the first thing I did was find the newest version of android and the most recent candidate.
aospSX, which was the Synthetic.Nightmare's aospX's work carried over to android 4.2.2 (Jellybean) by SteppNasty.
Looked and felt amazing, however impassable amounts of issues lead me to switch, including malfunctioning stock camera, firefox, dolphin, and stock browser stops responding, and 1-bar signal which plagued Android 4.2 (term: "signal drop" if you want to search).
So I searched for the word "stable"...
CM 7.2, the most stable version of Gingerbread, the stability and battery was amazing, but it didn't feel as good as the JB ROM before.
So I searched again, and I found a like-minded user from the past with similar objectives, Darkgiant revealed through a conversation to another user about the most stable ROMs.
The clue is CM10.0 by either 0.0 or coderz, but one is a dead link, the other have outlined issues after it got discontinued.
So I went back, double guessed myself on the older versions of Steppnasty's ROM.
2014 Stepp_aospX Editorial Correction
For installation of aforementioned ROM, some non-obvious things he didn't mention..To summon the proper Steppnasty's ROM for your android... you must:
Install the Stepp_aospSX Final
Fix Permissions
Reboot and setup phone settings (Language, google sync etc.,)
Reboot into recovery
Wipe Cache, Dalvik Cache
Install ICS GAPPs
Reboot and use the phone!
Trouble with ICS GAPPs ? (Based off of my anecdotal evidence). After ROM installation from downgraded Froyo, ICS GAPPs wasn't applicable (md5 double checked)
I just used the phone as is, later on, somehow I was able to install the ICS GAPPs.
Incase you can't use GAPPs, know this may be temporary and you're missing these features (afaik):
Facial recognition via lockscreen
Software EQ for stock Music player
TLDR:
aospSX 1.0.0 -- Android 4.2.2 (JellyBean) -- newer version -- Unstable
Stepp_aospX Final -- Android 4.0.4 (IceCreamSandwich) works only without GAPPs.
Although the ICS version (Stepp_aospX) is old, it's better and not much different, a halfway mark between GB and JB.
Stepp_aospX Troubleshooting Final Corrections
Radio, bugs/glitches, GPS locking, Perma-Voicemail-Notification, My battery omg my battery :crying:!.
Only swap radio files if absolutely necessary, and when you do, check the md5 sum every hair of the way.
The Radio Version, most important function to your phone, receiving calls from the network towers, has been changed! Haha I should've posted this before the link to rooting. It's when you were downgrading to Froyo (iirc), because no other ROMs I've installed changes radio, this ROM didn't change it either. But no worries, there are vast lists of these radios, available to download either here (CM Wiki) or here (dropbox by acefsw). Just use adb to push the PD15IMG.zip file as usual to sd for a recovery install. The difference between your signal, if it's even different, should be almost immediate after a reboot.
Bugs/Glitches:
Matrix/Zalgo Text // looks like y͏̴̡͢o͜͞҉̴͢u̢̨̕͝'̸ĺ̛͞͝l̕͜ ̸̵k̢͟͟͢ǹ̢̡̕͟ơ̸̡w̨͏҉̡̧ // Fix via rebooting
GPS Never-lock // Fix via dorqus
For GPS, you can also try FasterGPS the app.
Perma-voicemail-Notification on every reboot // Temp fix: Settings => Manage Apps => Phone => Clear Cache.
Trying permanent fixes now, I've heard if you get voicemail, delete it from voicemail center, it'll work.
Battery Drain from wakelock // GOOGLE PLAY SERVICES! // To Fix, either task it or filter it (require xposed framework) (For more information on battery, I'll make a separate section later on for wakelocks to filter by, to reduce drain, it allows battery drain only from user permitted activity apart from being idle)
Screen turns off automatically on camera mode and youtube videos // Fix: use screenOn app
Notification cannot be manually toggled off like app settings of JB. // No Fix, hope your app isn't as bad as my Lux D:
Headphone Heat: No bug noticeable, with ATH-M50 headphones, Skullcandy earbuds, Speaker phone over long hours, no over heating.
Extra tips while Unix Editing:
Code:
adb remount
to change permissions of /system/ folder files
[in shell]
Code:
mv renameMe.file renamed.bak
renames .file to renamed.bak, useful for creating backups before pushing gps.conf.
Code:
rm renameMe.file
deletes renameMe.file
Code:
cd ..
cd space
Moves up a directory outside of current folder
Moves into space folder
Code:
ls
lists items in folder
Final Result
Subject to change from threats, bribes and future tweaks/experiences.
:good: Stability - 9/10, only zalgo text so far...
:good: Function - 8/10 Every hardware button works from stock apps, two of the cameras, LED, Flash, light sensor, microphone, voice search, gps, bluetooth, speakers, mobile data, backup-sync, auto-rotate all work well, I only wish some functions could work without tweaking, ie GPS and notifications bug.
Battery - 5/10 Efficient options provided with smartassv2 and selectable others, however the phone is awake more than necessary, see batstats Currently I'm trying to figure out what wake trigger is doing this (apart from google play) to see if it can beat <20 hour battery time from stock >48 hours with light usage.
Problem solved, new section write-up incoming soon...
:good: Compatibility - 10/10 Stepp_Nasty advised some amazon apps doesn't work, I don't dwell on those fields, being a canadian. However it's awesome that this works just as well as the stock gingerbread, and your camera resolution increased. See comparison (2592px × 1456px vs 2592px x 1936px).
This is the best ROM I can find, if you have another favourite, please list it and give it a rating, because in a few years this phone is going to the grave yard, and whoever is looking here now, still have a glimmer of hope!
Shoutout to XDA Glacier, past and future posters, for giving us the resources to build on this awesome phone.
Future Edits: Format; txt y u no wrd wrap, More Links, Updated Root Guide, Experience/Final Result, more Bugs/tweaks.

[ROM] VegaComb BETA 1.7 - by TeamNewCo and TeamVillain

Welcome To VegaComb BETA 1.7!
Apologies that this has been so long in the making, I haven't been sitting idly by, but real-life responsibilities mean that I don't have anywhere near the time to work on the Vega as I once did. BUT, we are ready for a BETA 1.7 release! So, without further ado, here is what I can remember of the changelog:
Rebel1's 3G patch is now built-in to this build by default.
The /data/tombstones folder will now be automatically cleared out every reboot, to try and avoid it devouring all of your available /data space. This is a stop-gap until I can fix the problem fully.
The default Browser has been edited to remove the Asus homepage and replace it with Google, also TabletRoms.com has been added as the first bookmark.
Default dictionaries have been added to the default keyboard by popular demand! Languages are: En, De, Cs, Es, Fr, It and Nl. You will have to enable dictionary suggestions in the Keyboard settings to see these.
Default system wallpaper has been changed from the boring blue stock Honeycomb one to a much nicer abstract wallpaper.
A whole multitude of wallpapers have been added to the built-in Wallpaper-Picker, this is a mix of the nicest wallpapers I could find from the Acer Iconia, the Asus Transformer, the Motorola Xoom and some custom ones from around the net!
The Youtube app has been re-hacked to dramatically increase the quality of videos. The HQ option now works correctly to switch between high and low quality, and (while not 720p) the higher setting is VERY crisp and clear compared to before.
FLASH! Ahhhhahahahhh (think Queen). download the OFFICIAL flash player from the market (10.3 currently), download Opera Mobile from the market, watch flash. Simples. Green bar glitching, ghosting and other flash strangeness should now have been all fixed. Flash video can still be a little jerky as it is being rendered in software, overclock to get around this if you feel you have to (but it does work well at the default speed!)! BIG thanks to brucelee666 for this, when my transfer cable broke, he picked up and did a ton of testing to get this working!
Brand new (extra shiny) boot animation has been added. HUGE thanks to ThinkDevoid from the TabletROMs team for creating this for me!
The required default /system partition size for all future VegaComb releases is 155mb, we now have much more room to play with which removed a HUGE limitation that was actively holding me back!
More? Who knows, my memory is crappy
Before you update using either the 1.6-1.7 upgrade patch, or install 1.7 from scratch, you MUST be running my new ModdedStock base as this increases the /system partition size to make VegaComb BETA 1.7 fit. IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS THE INSTALL WILL NOT WORK CORRECTLY AND YOU WILL SOFTBRICK YOUR VEGA! Please fully read the ModdedStock thread to make sure you understand how this works!
I have been working HEAVILY in conjunction with MrGuy of TabletROMs now for a while, and especially on BETA 1.7 (Thank him for many things including the awesome YouTube app hack). Together we have now not only updated VegaComb, but now AdamComb as well for the NotionInk Adam. Vega owners owe a lot to MrGuy, so show him your love people!
Update notes from previous versions:
Code:
[I]Previous Notes:[/I]
[B]Changes in BETA1.6:[/B]
Spare Parts settings fixed - Setting power button to "Home, then sleep" now works correctly.
Bluetooth should now correctly turn on and pair "out of the box" without tweaking.
DPI settings have been changed. The default DPI is still 120, but you can now manually set this to 160 if you wish, unfortunately though the Google Apps will not function correctly at this density (although most other apps should now be fine).
Youtube app has been hacked (thanks to MrGuy for wokring with me for this!) to disable HQ playback by default on all videos. This should now mean that you can play all YouTube vids through the app. The HQ button is still there, but if you select it, the video will not play.
Default CPU speed set to 1.2ghz instead of 1ghz as there appears to be some strange speed issues when defaulted to 1ghz.
Fixed an issue where you needed root to read contents of NTFS drives.
Added OpenVPN support (thanks to Scanno!)
Hopefully fixed any lingering 3G issues (thanks to rebel1!)
Possible fix to GPS issues but this cannot be tested by me (unfortunately!).
Added a seperate download for an EXPERIMENTAL FlashPlayer hack. This hack unfortunately does not fix flash video playback on most sites (YouTube and BBC iPlayer do not work for example, but the small videos on the Yahoo news website do). What this hack DOES fix, is most other Flash applications, such as web games etc. Using this patched version of Flash, Kongregate Arcade should work correctly, as well as other apps such as Zoodles Kid Mode that use flash within the application to play games. Please use this at your own risk and report the results! Trying to play flash video using this patched version WILL crash your browser, you have been warned ;)
Added an animated VegaComb boot screen.
Possible speed increases due to various changes to the init + memory management tweaks.[B]EDIT: Apparently, this has caused a much more significant speed increase than was expected, 1.6 has been reported to be VERY fast! :)[/B]
[B]VegaComb BETA 1.5.2 Patch![/B]
Small patch to apply over the top of 1.5.1 (ONLY to be used on 1.5.1) which fixes Root (for people who upgraded) and App2SD for everyone. Link at the bottom of the thread!
[B]VegaComb BETA 1.5.1 Patch![/B]
This patch simply fixes a small issue with Wifi in 1.5, you can use the 1.4to1.5.1 patch to either upgrade from 1.4 to 1.5.1, or to patch 1.5 to 1.5.1 if you had already flashed it and have the issue :) Apologies for the bug!
[B]Welcome to VegaComb BETA 1.5![/B]
Hello all! We are back, as promised! The release cycle is slowing down a little now as expected, but we still have some damn juicy treats for you in the BETA 1.5 package :) So, without mucking about, here is what's changed since 1.4:
Speed... I spoke about this a little in the [URL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMqeqcRh5pM"]development update I put on youtube[/URL], but just to clarify here... We were not happy with the overall speed of the ROM in BETA 1.4. While repairing the stability issues in 1.3, we went a little overboard with "safe" settings, making 1.4 rock solid, but noticeably slower than previous releases. We didn't want to reach a "happy medium" with part-speed and part stability... and so, there has been a full review of all the memory settings, testing dozens of combinations until we reached a setup that offers both impressive speed (at least the speed of 1.3 IMO) without (hopefully!) any of the reliability drawbacks. And so, our hope is that 1.5 will be both the fastest, AND most stable release so far!
Bluetooth should now be fully working, searching and pairing has been tested with several devices, so pair away!
The Screenshot option in the Display section of Settings was causing Force Closes, this is now fixed, so you can take screenshots of your VegaComb tablet in action :)
The 3G APN (and related) settings should now be correctly visible in the settings menu, for those of you with 3G cards.
Issue which was causing the Launcher to sometimes Force Close on boot should now be fixed.
Problem with the media scanner not correctly locating music on the MicroSD card is now resolved.
Overclock increased back to a maximum of 1.5ghz.
Xpad support should now be available again (to connect Xbox pads over USB).
The Dreaded blue light of DOOM under the camera has been banished to the fourth dimension of hell.
Force Close problem when downloading from the stock browser or Gmail/Email apps should now be fixed.
Force close that was sometimes plaguing the recent apps menu should now be fixed.
Google maps framework has been added. this was previously causing certain apps (such as Tweetdeck) to immediately force close when you logged in. These apps should now be working correctly.
We have had a whip-around and provided the Honeycombs on the boot screen with an extra face each (PHEW! Pedants, move along, nothing to see here :P)
Shutdown menu has now been put in place (thanks to the AMAZING work of HomerSp), it is not the ordinary power menu, but a lovely custom one that provides you with the options for: Home, Shut Down, Reboot and Reboot to Recovery!
Because of the new shutdown menu, the recovery reboot app has now been removed (not needed!).
Added working screen calibration app. This will help with most issues (like home/back buttons) but does not fix the top-of-screen sensitivity issue as of yet I'm afraid!
App drawer has been edited to remove the bottom row of icons, so you can now better access the screen previews below them when placing a shortcut :)
Again, there may be other stuff that was fixed and forgotten :P Let us know if you find anything!
[B][I]I also want to make an important note for those who are confused... I am NOT working on this ROM alone, this has been a group effort from the start. Originally worked on by myself and Corvus (with help from the guys here at TabletROMS. Since then we hooked up with HomerSp (LEGEND!) who does magic things with Android that I really don't understand (some say he's a clone grown at google), and the project has moved in leaps and bounds. Unfortunately, Corvus has recently been forced to back out of this project due to time limitations in his real life, with work and family, so now it is primarily myself and Homer who work on VegaComb. I hope this clears things up, credit where credit is due![/I][/B]
[b]Welcome to VegaComb BETA 1.4 - Codename: Arnold Veganator (Hasta La Vista Processes)![/b]
As promised! BETA 1.3 was more of a features update, trying to get the ROM more in-line with where we would like it giong forwards, cleaning up files, opimizing and getting as much as possible working. We realized at that time that tehre were memory issues with the build, but we are trying to take a modulated approach to developing this ROM, so one step at a time :)
1.4 is primarily a performance release. You won't see any HUGE new features here (other than Huawei 3g support, thanks to rebel1!) but a lot has gone on in the background to try and make this ROM useable as your daily OS. Memory values have been tweaked, the kernel has been re-compiled with HoneyComb specifically in mind and (hopefully!) all of the freezes and hard lockups present in 1.3 have now been eradicated.
[b]Changes in BETA 1.4[/b]:
Kernel has been recompiled from scratch (thanks to @HomerSp!) gearing it for HoneyComb. [I]Some features such as xpad support are not yet present in this kernel, they will be added back in soon, but there shouldn't be much other than that.[/I]
Kernel bug that was preventing lowmemorykiller from working effectively has been fixed in this build.
Memory tweaks made in init to values better suited to both the Vega and to Honeycomb.
CPU clocking now defaults to 1ghz instead of 1.5, the top-end has been lowered down to 1.4 for now (this will be put back to 1.5 hopefully in the next release). Install SetCPU (from XDA) or download CPU Master from the market (free) to overclock if you want.
Support for Huawei 3G dongles added (HUGE thanks to rebel1 for this patch!) - this has NOT been tested as of yet, as I don't own a 3g dongle! :P
EGL patch tweaked slightly taking a new approach, hopefully making this simpler to manage in the future.
The issue where the battery indicator was not updating correctly MAY be fixed in this build (not 100% confirmed yet)
Replaced an icon I missed when the BACK button is pressed (oops!)
Adjusted a couple of apps to save some space in /system.
[I]Please make sure you ask for help and post bugs in the threads provided, I am getting WAY too many PM's to answer them all (sorry, don't take it personally!).[/I]
[B]Changes in BETA 1.3[/B]
Switched to Transformer Frameworks - Better fit for our hardware and to stay in line with what the Adam guys are doing.
New frameworks are more streamlined, should make the UI feel snappier overall.
Framework edited which should allow all web related apps to render correctly (not flash)!
[i]This means that you can now use browsers you download from the market like Miren and Dolphin, and news readers such as Pulse will now work.[/i]
Wifi issue that caused you to need to reboot after the first flash before Wifi would turn on is now fixed. You can connect straight away after flashing the ROM!
Corporate email setup added to Accounts & sync (all security settings work correctly, but remote wipe does not factory restet the device as of yet, but is does disconnect the emails).
Screenshot function added (select in Settings > Display). You can take screenshots by long-press of the Recent Apps softkey.
The Calendar app is back from Vacation and ready to organize your life.
The Books app has gotten over it's shyness and now shouldn't dissapear shortly after boot. This is still slightly strange so it might go walkies if you don't pin it down :/
Working Recovery Reboot app added, this one works so you no longer need gscript to reboot to recovery! (thanks to Paul O'Brien for this app!)
VegaComb Beta simple boot logo added.
REALLY annoying black fade on the right-side when using the notifications popup has been removed as it refused to display correctly.
MicroSD card now correctly displays as what it is, instead of showing as Internal USB storage.
Moving apps to the MicroSD should now work correctly, and apps launch fine, even if you have USB debugging turned on.
USB external storage now shows correctly, and gives a notification when it is plugged in (you can click on the notification to browse files or dismount the USB storage).
Can now correctly mount FAT, EXT and NTFS USB storage and browse through the file browser.
When you connect the Vega to the PC with your USB cable, you now get a notification allowing you to mount your SD card over the USB to share your files!
Doubled the ammount of memory that was available to apps in order to try and combat some of the freeze-up issues (MAKE SURE YOU WIPE DALVIK CACHE WHEN YOU INSTALL THIS BETA!)
Other stuff I've forgotten again :/
[B]Welcome to VegaComb BETA1a[/B]...
1a release is a very small patch to the installer script to make sure everything is installed correctly!
[B]What's new in BETA1?[/B]
This is a HUGELY new build, and has required a ton of testing, so please bear this in mind :P
Files have been streamlined and some slowdown bugs should have been fixed, you should see a nice little speed increase in this build.
SuperUser is FINALLY fixed! [B]No... I really mean it this time :P[/B]
WiFi has been patched. You will still have to reboot as it will lock the first time you try to turn it on, but after that it should be much more stable than before, and shouldn't require you to toggle WiFi on/off all the damn time.
The Dolby Audio section in the Settings menu was causing Force Close errors, so this has now been removed from the menu completely.
Web browser has been hacked to prevent you having to disable EGL rendering in order for it to work.
Gmail and Email apps have been FIXED. You can now read your emails in both apps, they should be working perfectly as far as I have tested.
Bluetooth libs and binaries have been added. Bluetooth now turns on without any errors, but I cannot yet confirm if it actually works. If someone tests this, please let me know!
WiFi has been patched to connect correctly to ad-hoc networks. So you can now tether your Vega to a phone such as the HTC Hero.
The whole image has been SHRUNK (massively) to fit into the Vega's default partition size. It's a hell of a squeeze, and some apps have had to be pushed to /data to make it fit. All of these are apps that can be re-downloaded from the market like maps etc) other than two, the Android keyboard (it's a huge file :P) and the Android Music app. If you prefer to use a different keyboard, you can remove this one, but if you wipe /data, you will have NO keyboard installed, and the world might implode :P
This is now a ClockworkMod image, designed to be used on the Vega's default partition tables, so DO NOT flash this over the top of ALPHA4. Re-flash 1.09 (or some other standard image) before installing this through CWM. You now have a healthy 293mb to play with in /data, so you can download stuff off the market without worrying like in ALPHA4 :)
OK, LOTS more stuff has changed, but I can't remember a lot of it, I'm sure it will come back to me, but my brain is a little fried right now and I need a beer :P
[B]Updates from ALPHA4:[/B]
Gapps WORKING! (Huge effort on IRC, big thanks to MrGuy!)
NTFS usb drives should now be detected in host mode (not tested)
Moved some apps to /data and shrunk the /system partition to 260mb to give you some more space now that the market works!
3D Photo Browser, Books, Maps, Youtube, Google Talk and Music Apps moved to /data (you can uninstall them from there to save space, if you wipe data/factory reset you will lose them!)
Browser patched to turn off EGL rendering by default, so no more need to use about:debug anymore.
SuperUser fixed!! (Hopefully properly this time! :P) [B](ONLY JOKING I BROKE IT AGAIN! :P)[/B]
Other stuff I've forgotten :P
[B]Updates fromAlpha3:[/B]
SD Card is now detected
Audio fixed (HomerSp, legend :) )
WiFi Fixed (Guess who? :P ) (This is still buggy, the first time you turn it on, it will not work. Reboot, then try again. Sometimes need to toggle on/off to get it running)
G-Sensor fixed (yup, you can rotate happily now!)
Bottom-Bar Home button fixed.
Lock screen added.
Hardware buttons now work, power to sleep/wakeup etc.
Added Spare Parts, you can set power to home/sleep.
Root and Superuser added (you should be able to use CPU tools to overclock now). [B][I](WHOOPS I BROKE THIS! SEE BELOW ON HOW TO FIX!)[/I][/B]
Bunch of changes in build.prop
More updated libs and binaries than you can shake a llama at.
[B]Initial Features from Alpha1:[/B]
It boots!
Hardware Acceleration!
Widgets.
Most (not tested) android apps should run.
What doesn't work (updated as of 1.7):
Camera Still FC.
Flash player doesn't work in apps or in the default browser (Opera Mobile only!)
Battery indicator doesn't always update correctly (wipe battery stats tog et around this).
Audio has been reported as "Tinny" - we are looking in to this.
Factory reset (and remote exchange wiping) not working.
Cannot connect to PEAP Wifi networks.
We will keep working on this!
CREDITS!
Myself and Corvus have put a whole ton of work in to this, but there are others who deserve praise for all of their work:
HomerSp, for his brilliant work on fixing the Hardware acceleration, sound, wifi, the world, curing cancer and generally being awesome!
The guys working on the NotionInk Adam port here at TabletROMs - They have helped us a LOT both with their original port to use as a base, and a wealth of help they have given us on IRC to get this working, our original port was based on files from the SDK, Xoom and Transformer, we are now completely basing our work on their amazing ROM (which is based on the Transformer and Iconia) Thanks guys!.
MrGuy has worked with me extensively on version 1.7 (and with lots of parts before!), so HUGE thanks to him!
Lenny from VillainROM. Lenny has pretty much tested and approved EVERY build of VC to date, given opinions and hilighted bugs. Thanks a lot man!

EDIT BY ADMIN:: To receive honeycomb updates, please join us on twitter |here|
cool intersting times ahead! good luck on port, hopefully 3.0 sourcecode out sometime soon
In the title it says xoom(ish) port but it looks more like a transformer port in the video? Either way Honeycoooooomb! Good luck guys
Good luck and keep up the good job!
It is a mix of all 3. SDK, Transformer and Xoom. I took a few libs from the Xoom, as well as a ton of stuff from the Adam Transformer port and the SDK files factored in too. It's kind of a Frankenstein-monster effect going on Changed the title to reflect this!
Cool, great work. Am pretty certain the source will actually be released soon. Googles i/o is on tuesday and am sure this is when they are gunner announce or hopefully release the source for honeycomb, or possibly icecream, which will be a mashup of gingerbread and honeycomb am sure.
So hopefully that will help getting honeycomb onto the vega
Well done guys, keep the good work going.

FRESH TODAY 9th May 2011 11:30AM EDT
Cross collaboration between devs of sister tablets in the ##adamroot freenode IRC channel this morning!
Devs: HomerSp got hardware acceleration working, newbe5 got it working on the Advent Vega (video demo below) and DJ_Steve applied them to the Adam HC rom and confirmed to now be working smoothly!
9th May 2011 12:05 EDT
DJ_Steve showsoff hardware acceleration implementation on Notioink Adam.
I encourage guys, let's take the VEGA to infinity and beyond
your second video looks pretty smooth any reason why a dev only download isnt appropriate ? not pushing this is amaing work you must have great patience just intrigued
Curious to know how much space is left for app install after Honeycomb is put on the vega???

you can try now

I'm staggered at how smooth H/C is from the video!
I did try but i had a falling out with nvflash so i'll look forward to a update.zip I can use, I assume when wifi is working!
I did spy from the video there didn't seem to be any gApps, I assume this will be added unless there is a seperately gApps download for H/C?

hopefully honeycomb sourcecode released at todays event at 5 oc'lock london time, who nows we might even get an update from advent or pov.
fingers crossed

i'd be surprised tbh!
I was under the impression from Advent we would be getting 2.3 and the source code has been out for quite some time and still nothing. yet you can get a CM nightly which is 2.3.4.
Unless they've had access to the H/C as a vendor and been working on that but some how i doubt it :S
Wow, a mention on the front page!
Congrats on this, guys!
Wow. Does this mean hardware acceleration may make its way into other Android devices? I hope so!

Help! Cm6 rom is so close to perfection :'(

Once again I am here seeking the help from developers for my phone. Which is not the XT720 (XT701 instead), but I really don't know where else to turn.
I was restless again, so then I went and started looking for roms. I found this one:
Speed XT701 2.2.1版 beta7 搞掂wifi
This is really new and is running CM6 based moto blur extremely smoothly. Search on google and click the first few links to see the interface. Amazing as always, the CM roms. The touch sensitivity is ON PAR with the Iphone 4. I was so glad that everything was working - Camera, SDcard, SERVICE, SMS, CALLING, all working so perfectly. It was completely different from the CM 7 mod.
And honestly, It really seems even faster than the CM7 rom. I read from the translated description that it is using "smart200mhz to 600 mhz" processing for superb battery and so on. It really does have a lot of attractive features and usual and completely destroys the 2.1 rom.
Now comes the horrible, devastating part. No wifi. .
I did the 3 wipes, updated, and 3 wipes again, and it still had no wifi.
Right now I'm really leaning towards sticking to this rom. My solution is to keep my backup of the 2.1 stock, and nandroid over to it when I need to so that I can download new apps, back then up in SD, and then nandroid back.
Can anyone please help me figure out how to get wifi? I'll donate from paypal if someone can help me resolve this wifi issue. . Just terrible, this problem. So close.

...what's that supposed to mean? I've never had a problem EVER with the phone registering my touches and my touches can be me barely touching the screen (i.e. I can't imagine how anything can actually be better than that).
Maybe he meant responsiveness of the UI? Just a guess. And yes I agree the touches on the phone is already very good in your sense.

For the touch sensitivity thing, I'm pretty sure its because I'm running 2.1, which is why the IPhone seemed faster with tracking my finger movement when I compared them side by side. The XT701 itself is already blazing fast, because I'ved used overclocking, setcpu, and memory manager, but then when I upgraded to this rom called the "speed beta 7" it was just overwhelming. I've never seen the phone so reactive.
The rom is a CM 6.1.2, android 2.2, so it would explain everything so much faster. I always thought I couldn't get the phone to be any faster, but this rom proved me wrong again.
Here is the link to the rom. I'm also going to be copying and pasting the post that the developers have along with the rom. It's going to be translated from Chinese into English, so it'll be rough. But you'll get the jist of what its saying.

Students do not envy MIUI, MIUI is based on the CM 0.1 development, and the current version has a lot of difference, and code optimization is not high.
Goal: present the mod of the already chaotic, mod rarely have their own style, hope this mod will enable students to experience the same as 2.2.1 to 2.1, and so restore the Moto mod style.
Known issues:
1. WIFI not dynamic;
(2) some special encoding video black;
3. FM is still not available;
4. Can not call recording;
(this part was in white text. I don't know if it means that its fixed or not. Because it does say that in the latest Beta7 wifi was fixed thanks to S or something)
(Note: points represent the normal running speed, running sub is the ultimate performance of a test, therefore, the common run from high up poor, but the machine is running;
For example: run the software needed to run sub-use lots of memory, ROM memory recovery efficiency is poor, will result in greatly reduced running speed after hours, but had no effect on the running sub-
So the actual speed will depend on the. )
Recommendation: To maintain the stability and speed, it is recommended to remove the JIT, of course, affect the reserves is small.
Recommended with the software: automated process killer from Kai Butler
Recommended with the script:
Swap 256M memory or more

Everything it says is true. It is fast as hell, no lag. The ONLY thing which is stopping me is the wifi, which bugs me even more, because it says here that Beta7 FIXED WIFI. I don't know why my wifi doesn't work!
interesting. I wonder what will happen if we apply this update to the running cm6 on xt720
Becarefull this could have a custom kernal that could bootloop or worst.

Really? I've been using this so far it's great. I've never seen my phone be so responsive ever. But there is still no Wifi. Everytime I try to connect it says, Connecting, and then Disconnected. Because of that I haven't even logged in with my account. No wifi causes the phone to run even smoother, cause a lot of background apps aren't runnning

I just had a similar problem on the XT720 CM6. It turned out that wifi actually was working, but DNS lookup was not (I could use static IP in browser). I fixed it by replacing /system/xbin/busybox with a known-good version. You can test busyboxes with something like copying it to /tmp/busybox and then running (either via adb or terminal emulator):
/tmp/busybox nslookup android.com
Could you be a bit more specific Mioze7Ae. I have the busybox app; I don't think I have the terminal emulator. But I still don't understand what you mean.
I have Busybox app installed, and it says the "Status: Done!" after installing 1.18.4 :S.
As for the terminal emulator, I've heard of it but I don't have the app. So I install the app and then type that in the emulator?
EDIT: I just downloaded some Pro term emulator app. I turned on wifi, and then I typed in that code (cept I put xbin since I only installed it there) and it said:
Server: 8.8.8.8
Address 1: 8.8.8.8
nslookup: can't resolve 'android.com'
What does this mean? cause It just seems to me that my Wifi is still not working. Also, I've been seeing DNS around but I have no idea where to find it in my phone. Or DPN, something liek that but all I have in the Network settings is VPN and proxy, which is at default.
On a side note, could anyone help me find a working zip folder of Google apps for XT701/XT720/CM6? In the past I've installed them manually on android, and I've tried to use OR to flash the apps into my phone as well.
Look in the cm7 for the Motoroi thread & around post 50 there is a link to the cm website Google apps updates
With wifi connected try using the browser to go to a website via ip address instead of name. For example http://50.23.231.74/ worked, even though http://xda-developers.com/ did not. If ip addresses don't work then probably you have a different problem.
My problem right now is that I cannot even connect to the router at home (or anywhere else). It just keeps saying scanning connecting, and then looping back to scanning.
Sad thing is, just today I flashed another CM6 rom by the name of update-cm-6.1.2-XT701-Milestone-signed-by-s.zip today, and wifi worked. But then, a ton of other things stopped working so I nandroided back.
It just doesn't make sense that Wifi wouldn't work for some and not for others. I am still way too unexperienced for android.
I found it from this website, http://xt701.ghostry.cn which is sort of a jackpot for me. It has the latest releases of ROMS from China/world all uploaded onto that site. I don't know if it will be much help for XT720 developers, but that site is extremely updated.
Another slight problem which I am also overlooking for the sake of Speed is the LED being unusable. I always relied on it when my phone was on silent for texts, but now It is just gone. Any ideas how to get it back=/? Thanks for your input anyways!
So wifi is still not working. I've been reading around that it has to do with the Radio img??!? I don't get it.
I do know that this ROM doesn't have a FM radio yet, but I don't know if it has to do with my wifi.
I also tried replacing my tiwlan_drv.ko with other versions of it, but it ended up in an Error. Is it possible for me to flash a CM6 rom with a working wifi, copy the tiwlan_drv.ko file from there, and then use it on this current ROM that is not working? Like using root explorer to replace the .ko with the other roms one?
Sigh..
is this thread closed? nobody from august? i donwloaded some roms from http ://xt701.ghostry . cn and now i will install to my XT701 and see if any it's working so I can have android 2.2!!!
As long as you have xt701 your good to go.

[ROM] [3.2] Vegacomb 3.2 Build 9n and 9b Update3

Ok,
here is our new release.
Well... Here we are at last! Whole new ROM, whole new thread
For a long time we have been working to build the best possible version of HoneyComb to the Advent Vega. It has been a LONG road, with many hacks and pitfalls along the way. We started with the messiest set of files anyone has ever seen, and we have now progressed to this. Full-fledged, GPU accelerated, NATIVE, Honeycomb 3.2 on the Advent Vega.
There's no going back now. I'm so happy with this ROM that I'm actually going a little crazy with affection. There are still some bugs... Rebooting to CWM causes a stale boot, you have to hold power to turn the tab off, then on next bot you get CWM. Still no camera, bluetooth isn't working. But other than that... Well, I'll let you guys see for yourself.
On the speaker issue, I feel I must put a quick note here... We BELIEVE that the "Overheating speaker" issue is now resolved. Audio levels are now well within the safe limits, and voltages are back at what should be a very safe level. But as always, please be VERY careful, unfortunately we cannot be responsible for any hardware failures resulting from using a custom ROM, but we are very confident that this issue should now be totally resolved.
VegaComb 3.2 Build 9b und 9n Update3 Features:
Update1+2 included
The clock and date issue should now been fixed for all
GPU RAM reduced to 96MB , more RAM for Apps
support for high Wifi channels like 12 + 13
new Honeycomb market
support for the soon coming GPS App included
Downloads, please choose the right Version (original ROM download is at the bottom of this thread!)! (or you Bootloop) :
Update 3 for Build9n: VegaComb_HC3.2_Build9n_update3.zip
Update 3 for Build9b: VegaComb_HC3.2_Build9b_update3.zip
VegaComb 3.2 Build 9b und 9n Update2 Features:
Fix for Bluetooth MAC addressing to hopefully make BT work correctly now.
Above fix should now also make WiFi considerably more stable.
Fix for people who were experiencing issues with the Market not being able to install apps.
Downloads, please choose the right Version (original ROM download is at the bottom of this thread!)! (or you Bootloop) Update 2 can be installed directly over 9n OR 9n-Update1 (it includes all of the Update 1 and Update 2 changes in a single package):
Update 2 for Build9n: VegaComb_HC3.2_Build9n_update2.zip
Update 2 for Build9b: VegaComb_HC3.2_Build9b_update2.zip
VegaComb 3.2 Build 9b und 9n Update1 Features:
Working Deep Standby
Updated camera lib
Re-added App Drivemount
VegaComb 3.2 Build 9b Features:
•Coarse location discovery (based on WiFi connection) is now working correctly.
•Updated camera libraries to the latest version thanks to the development effort by many (including Eduardo and Redscorpion) over at MoDaCo. Google Talk video chat should now be working, as well as the stock Camera app. Other apps have been tested but there is a possibility that not all of them work (please test and let us know!), but we felt that it was more important for Gtalk to work as the camera isn't much use for actually taking pictures
•Added Eduardo's accelerometer patch. This should allow much more responsive accelerometer with no lag.
•Power management for bluetooth/wireless has been fixed. Hopefully this should stop them interfering with eachother when one is disabled.
•Screen calibration functionality built in to the kernel to calibrate on the fly.
•USB on-the-fly host/slave switcher integrated in to the kernel, this should allow switching between USB host/slave on the tablets side USB port without the need to reboot!
•Disabled device suspend when the tablet is connected to an active USB connection, preventing the USB connection from being severed.
•Added a brand new app called: Shuttle Tools which includes the toggles for the above two options. Allowing you to calibrate the screen or switch USB modes from within Android.
• Better language support then 9n, newer Gapps
• No apps are moved to data
• It have a bigger system partition then 9n, so when you have bad nand blocks, this could be work better for you
• When you use the Full Rom Installer you don´t need to flash ModdedstockV2 (Beware when you flash the new full rom it is like the ModdedStockV2 install, you loose all data)
• All future updates after this Full ROM will come as CWM update zip, so that your data are save
VegaComb 3.2 Build 9n Features:
Please be aware that although there was a "version 9" release on some German forums, this update was never integrated into the full build process, and was a side-project by rebel1 to acheive 2 goals. 1) To greatly increase the /system partition size (from 150mb to 200mb) and use that size to add larger apps that have increased language support for non-english speaking users. This build is unrelated to the previous "build 9" and as such has been labelled 9n (new, or newbe5, meaning that it has gone through the usual build and testing processes by myself), an alternate installer based on THIS build will also be provided by rebel1, including the expanded /system partition and enhanced language capability, this alternate build will be labelled 9b (bigger system, alternate build) and will be an nvflash installer rather than a CWM image.
•System image has been shrunk considerably, this should help people who have a lot of random lockups / install issues due to bad NAND blocks. Build 8.1 was using 149.5mb of the allocated 150mb provided by ModdedStockv2, Build 9n is only using 139.8mb allowing much more room to avoid bad blocks if you have them.
•Google Books has been removed entirely. It looks nice, but it's pointless as you can't even access the Store outside of the US. Install this manually if you want it for some reason.
•Google Maps and Street View have been moved in to /data to save space and because they can both be installed/updated from the market, so there is no need for them to be in /system.

•Disabled device suspend when the tablet is connected to an active USB connection, preventing the USB connection from being severed.
•Added a brand new app called: Shuttle Tools which includes the toggles for the above two options. Allowing you to calibrate the screen or switch USB modes from within Android.
Current issues:
On rebooting to recovery, the tablet will "hang" on a stale boot. Hold down the power button until the screen goes completely off, and then power back on to get to CWM.
More? Probably! You tell us

what do you mean by "Native App2SD has been added back in (is not present on 3.2 ROMS as standard)."
Does that mean we dont have to get the app2sd app?
I looked for the app2sd in the settings and is unable to find it.
can you please explain..??
I love it, thanks for your hard work.
awesome build
much much better than beta 1.7
thank you so much for that.
just one question, compare to 1.7, all icons look too big.
different resolution or different density?
I don't think we can change the resolution.
Thanks.
Edit: I use LCD density to make the icons smaller, got wifi error, after uninstall lcd density and reboot, no error.
aarrggg... I'm at work and can't get this till I get home.
5pm can't come quick enough now
Been playing with this since yesterday evening.
You can change the screen Res in your build.prop file. I'm on 140dpi at the moment, many people seem happy with 127
USB host mode doesn't work yet, hopefully not too far away
Everything is really fast. No lag at all. There are a few little oddities here and there but nothing too drastic. An amazing release really.
HDMI out is working? My TV didn't recognize it. Pretty fast. I set the density to 140. Looks better now. Thanks.

You need to hold power button until you see the power down menu, select recovery then it'll hang on reboot, hold the power then until the tablet is forced off and when you power back up, it'll boot into cwm recovery
could someone with an official dock please try and see if they can still connect usb peripherals on this rom, I know you can't directly until they fix it, but was wondering if it still worked via the dock. If so i'll buy one
thanks,
malty
Hi there.
I have been running this for a few hours, i have got to say, its fantastic. So quick and smooth. I think i will be running vegacomb from now on.
Just curious about the keyboard, it seems very small. Is that the stock one for 3.2? No major problem just installed hackers keyboard.
Still not sure about the pixel density, but i can easy change that.
Love the first boot screen, should make it more difficult to bang out a vegacomb clone on ebay
Any tips on getting the accelerometer working properly with games?
Many thanks to you and TeamNewCo, this is a fantastic ROM
Legendary. This rom is awesome.

GooApple V5 issues list

Hello everyone!
First of all sorry for my bad English. I represent smartphones distributor from Kiev, Ukraine. We have contacted with GooApple sales director and have got GooApple V5 sample phone for tests before bulk orders.
All I can say: it's just not ready for international market at the moment and unfortunately they are not very much interested in positive firmware or hardware changes.
They have made firmware ios_11.12.08 for our last recall but non of our issues have been resolved + one added: it doesn't react on first home button push after lock screen, it only shows unlock screen after the second home button push or fast twice push.
Here is our issues list:
Phone's battery draining, runs out too fast!!! After full charge it runs out 75% battery life for 4 hours of usage: 1 call during 5 min., video watch during 8 min., music during 6 min, looking thought photos during 5 min., taking 3 pictures with the camera. 1,5 hour is just for walkthrough over the interface, settings, lock/unlock. 3,5 min. video takes about 5-6% of battery life. And it's without any gaming, internet surfing, making videos. Other time it's just holding.
Screen has some lightness flickering. Backlight blinking, flashing a little bit from the sides and left top corner.
Connect button (in putting Wi-Fi password mode) doesn't work. Just can't connect to any locked Wi-Fi network.
Bad Wi-Fi catch signal even with a close to phone router.
Doesn't remember icons location on springboard bar after moving around and reboot the phone.
Showing the last called phone number in background when sending USSD commands (checking balance or any anything else).
The input keyboard should be the same as iOS with working English and Russian (now it doesn't work) and customization ability in the General folder in Settings.
Booting animation should be the same as iOS with Apple logo only.
Creating folders (put in and put out icons) and moving icons around doesn't work properly.
The font in Calendar, Time, Dial is not the same as iOS.
The sim card pin code enter should be the same as iOS.
How to delete apps like Call Log, PowerOff... chinese QQ and others?
Reminders, Maps, Weather Stocks iReader apps should be in English.
Browser app should be renamed to Safari.
Gallery app should be renamed to Photos.
Phone key at dialpad should be renamed to Keypad.
Must speed up fake iOS usage response, performance.
Must speed up screen rotation/orientation response.
Must replace red ! (exclamation) to the Sending progress bar when sending messages/SMS.
Must replace chinese word to english word Call at the dial pad.
Make possibility of adding your own ringtones in the Settings.
Make double tap or pres hold the home button for multitask, running apps view like on iOS with appear at the bottom of the screen.
Make possibility of completely close/kill apps taking up memory and running in the background.
Make dialing numbers sound quieter (it's set to max by default).
Make lock/unlock sound quieter (it's set to max by default but should be possible to customize).
Make full-screen camera mode when taking photos.
Correct + - add sound mode when playing video, music (quiet sound from 2 to 6 bars and after 6 bars it's big increase in sound).
Remake Videos app (it should redirect/open phone's gallery instead of SDcard content).
Remake YouTube app (it should be in English or redirect/open youtube.com).
WLAN folder in Settings should be renamed to Wi-Fi.
Phone warms up when gaming, talking, videos.
It doesn't recognize sim card enter when ON.
Word Wednesday comes out of the Calendar app icon.
Power On/Off button dangles, swing around with sound.
Upper background part can be seen when charging.
While start pinching any picture from the center it zooms in with imprecision to the side of the picture.
Battery life doesn't shows properly on lock screen (it shows all empty when screen corner shows less of 20% battery life).
It Reboots by itself few times during the day when locking the screen.
If you know any other issues please add them by numbers 39, 40....
Or if you have solutions for any of the issues please also add it by the 1-38 numbers.
I hope we can make it better together!
Possible Solutions to Gooapple V5 issues.
Generally speaking, I don't think that all these reasons are real for every V5 phone around. Did you wipe out every data BEFORE flashing the new rom? If not, certain applications may have been running multiple times (i.e.: Maps in my case when I did that). I am using the android rom (not the iOS one) and I have not all these problems whatsoever.
Possible solutions:
1. Try and see if you have data enabled or GPS is on. This device has a hardcoded (R) Roaming on (i.e. you can't turn it off) plus it's not (yet) capable of 3G data. Turn both of them off while not needing them helps A LOT.
2. Not an issue here with newest android build; maybe your screen has issues. I've had some friends with original iPhones having the same flickering as yours. Turned out to be their retina display.
3. Not true. I'm connecting on both my wifi spots at home both Wep and WAP/PSK. Wifi is low powered though and need you to be NEAR the wifi router / spot (see below).
4. True! Just 5 meters away and a mid-wall makes the difference. They really need to boost their receiver.
5.Try reinstalling AFTER you've made a complete wipe data/factory reset. THEN install the rom. This might fix the issue.
6.I'd really like to see a list of USSD commands if you have one available for this phone... (pm me??? )
7.Same for Greek keyboard. I've overcame the problem by installing Greek Input Method from the market.
8.Heh. +1
9.It works for me for both android and iOS roms.
10,11.I agree.
12.You'll have to be 'root' to do so. The only way I've found to do so is the program superoneclick (google it). After rooting the V5, download from market 'Root Uninstaller'. Works perfectly even with the 'protected apps' like the one you mentioned. I know that you don't have 'market' on iOS rom so here's what I did:
I've had a factory reset first, then installed Android rom and THEN the iOS rom. I've also installed a program called 'Go Launcer EX'. This pops up when unlocking the device asking you what launcher you prefer, this way you have the best of both worlds.
13-16: Agree.
17 & 18: The problem is the retina display with the slow (relatively) 650MHz MTK6573 processor. The G3 (previous model) had a smaller screen that the cpu was able to handle. On android rom things are better though...
19 & 20: Agree.
21: On android you can do so by adding your custom ringtones on a folder called /alarms, /ringtones etc on your sd card. Should work for us too (didn't try it yet).
22. Agree.
23. I am using an app from market called: Advanced Task Manager does the trick.
24-31. Agree.
32. I didn't go that far!!! I guess you're right.
33 & 34. Yep.
35 & 36. I haven't got such a problem. Consider the retina screen of yours has a problem / issue?
37&38. Nope. Works alright here.
Finally another issue with no solution:
39. GPS lock. The GPS won't operate properly in EU (Greece) where I live. Takes forever to find satellites and it won't lock to a fix point even if you wait 10 mins. This is what I'm after right now and if I have a proper solution I'll post it here.
Thanks for putting up this thread Cyber_dude. If you need anything I'll be more than glad to help!
Thanks for your reply.
We have talked with GooApple for about a week now and sure I have made all needed such as wipe data before firmware update. That's because you are basically using Android ROM. Customers buying phones like this one because they just want iPhone for less and want everybody else think they got an iPhone. So using Android on any iPhone replica is just not right. It should run fake iOS and should be at least 60% of the original one. This phone costs $300 icnl. shipping at resellers (price of used iPhone 4 on eBay) and I think user interface should be well polished and flawless for that money.
Yes, Maps on last gooapple_ios_11.12.08 works in English now. But after resolving one problem they made two others, like it doesn't react on first home button push after lock screen, it only shows unlock screen after the second home button push or fast twice push.
1. That's not a solution! Sure I have turned everything like wi-fi, gps... off. But customers want it to be fully functional phone, without thinking: "ohh., have I turned my phone's wi-fi and gps off to kepp the battery alive?" It's shouldn't be like that!
They have you used so low capacity 1050mAh battery. (but we think it's even less). The original iPhone's has 1420mAh. And there are even 2200-2430mAh on the market today. They have changed screen, ram, cpu but keep the same battery. It's just stupid. And it's smaller then iPhone's battery so you just can't replace it. It works maximum up to 3 hours in active usage mode without gaming. (with full brightness on, because turning it less on this screen is just sacrilege).
That's they have answered about that: "when making a phone, we have to consider a lot of things, especially the cost, when everything is as great as iphone 4, the price will be too..."
2. Yes, it's old issue, it resolves after reinstall.
3. It's true. It works on you because your wep password is large then 8 characters. It doesn't work with less passwords like mac or iPhone.
5. Yes, new firmware resolved that.
6. I mean USSD commands for checking balance.
But here is a command to enter EngineerMode: *#67876#*
7. Stock keyboard is a crap. I use Smart Keyboard Pro.
8. I can change robot with apple booting animation but can't change gooapple name at the beginning. I think it's logo.img at the rom zip file. I have tried to delete it and make other changes to the rom but can't sign it. It's always shows sign error at the install.
9. It works but it works very-very badly. Then you are trying to move icon to other position it creates a folder with other icon, it's so annoying.
12. I have also made the root with the SuperOneClick. And delete Chinese apps with Root Explorer.
Thanks for Go Launcer EX advise. What else it can help us with?
17 & 18. They used MTK6513 it's cuted MTK6573 without 3G. It's not the best one anyway.
21. Yes, I also want to try to add custom ringtone to media directory folder.
23. Yes, I also use Advanced Task Killer Pro on gooapple_ios_11.11.30 but they have added double tap home button like iPhone to kill running apps on gooapple_ios_11.12.08
35 & 36. These issues are real and haven't resolved on new roms. That's not screen problem, I can make a screenshot if needed.
37. This one is also real. Can also make a screenshot.
38. Haven't seen this issue on gooapple_ios_11.11.30
39. Maybe you should try to test it in EngineerMode Have you tried to use any other GPS third-party application?
I didn't know about this issue because I haven't tried GPS, no need with this battery.
Do you know how to replace chinese word (Call) to english word Call at the dial pad? Because it's immediately catches the eye when using. I have decompiled the Phone.apk with APK Edit program but all image files are normal over where, chinese word is not an image file. I don't know how to change it.
Just lets keep this thread go by adding new issues and how to solutions.
Got my V5 about 2 weeks ago. Been playing with it for a while - tried both the newer roms and currently running the ios version that is made available about 10 days ago. Been working fine for me, except I may gps is very slow (can take up to 10 minutes for it to find me), and the built in FM Transmitter does not work. I also have various chinese apps which I was not able to delete. I will try the latest rom to see what improvemements it has.
Question, how did you root the phone? I downloaded superoneclick, but keep getting hung on the "waiting for device". I have usb debuggin on, and tried it both with "usb connect" on and off (the setting in the phone to establish a usb connection to a PC). Instead of using this "usb connect" feature, do I need to download some type of usb driver for this phone? If so, can you provide details? I've tried various usb drivers for MT6513 but nothing yet works - even tried something called PDANet which installed some type of software oin the phone and said it was connected, but still the superoneclick failed. Any ideas?
Oh, by the way I found a vending.apk that works on the ios rom. See link below
http://www.mediafire.com/?khpvzmzwwaqyxdm
Thanks
I have uploaded the drivers for GooApple V5, here is the link: http://www.mediafire.com/?h6hr1ckrf3sc7cj
How to root your GooApple V5:
Make sure you use Win XP.
Download drivers file from the link above and unzip it.
Phone Settings -> Applications -> Unknown sources, on
Phone Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging, on
Phone Settings -> Applications -> Development -> to keep awake, on
Phone Settings -> Applications -> Development -> Allow analog location, on
Connect the data cable, turn on USB storage in the phone.
In the Windows Device Manager (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Device_Manager) find your phone, open properties and install or update the drivers from the unzipped folder.
Reboot your computer.
Now download the SuperOneClick from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 If you run XP, install .NET Framework v2.0 or above.
Shut down your antivirus/firewall.
Turn off USB storage in the phone. Make sure you do not mount the sd card.
Run the SuperOneClick BOOT process. If it's not success from the first time try it again.
After that install the Root Explorer to your phone, go system/app, push Mount R/W button and delete any app you want.
Thanks for the vending.apk, here are also some tips for it: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-install-new-android-market-2-2-6-on-your-device/
Cyber_Dude, thanks for the engineering mode code. You've done a nice job on the rooting info. Just for the story: I've done it on W7, 32bit and worked alright too. Newest superoneclick has the ability to forcibly ask for Admin privileges. Drivers have to be installed manually though.
I've found out into the Engineering menu that there's a CPU Frequency test that reports a high of 806MHz. THAT would be awesome to have when needed. Do you have any *working* utility that is able to over clock the MTK6573 CPU of it? I've tried some from the market but with no luck whatsoever.
Some info on the WiFi boosting would be helpful too. I've been digging into the /etc directory and found out several conf files that may, or may not do the job. I'd rather not alter the values on my own though...
Ah, finally another addition:
There seems to be an issue importing/exporting my contacts from the phone to google.com. Plus the Account and Sync options on the settings menu isn't reporting the respective field (i.e.: only Picassa, books and gmail is able to sync. Contacts is not on the list).
Thanks.
Cyber_dude - thanks for the rooting details. Got my V5 rooted today, and it worked from my vista laptop (didn't need a xp PC). I deleted the 9 chinese apps no problem including the chinese market app.
The vending.apk I provided works whether you root or not - however now that I'm rooted I will keep your instructions in mind if I want to upgrade to a different market version.
I'm still on the Dec1/2011 ios rom - anyone know what the newer ios rom (Dec10/2011) has to offer? I have tons of apps and settings personalized, so I'm not really wanting to wipe the phone to load the latest ios rom unless I know it will have some improvements.
Only problems I still have, which I would appreciate feedback on, are:
1) gps is very slow to find my location (can take up to 30 minutes). Funy thing is that as I scroll on the map it refreshes fast, and I can find addresses and streets, but it just can not find my location?
2) ther built in FM Transmitter does not work - would love to get this working since I do not have bluetooth stereo in the car. FYI - found other fmtransmiiter.apk apps on the net - can I just replace my existing same app on systems/bin to make it work?
Thanks
Have you tried it with the 'new' Android UI ROM? How does it perform? I'd really like to see some videos - youtube only has 13 and I've seen them all ..

1) Same thing here. From the data sheet (from Mediatek) of the MTK6573 (which this phone has) the update location should be as fast as 10ms (that's 1/100 of a second) so something is DEFINITELY wrong.
2) I think you'll have to 'sign' it somehow. There are some apps that are supposed to provide 'signed' apps but never got to work with one; so I have no experience.
Cheers
macsga, DanADaMan, you are welcome.
I think cpu overclocking is not in time now and it also can make even worse. But we'll be glad if you can find any good, stable working app for that and test it. The only thing need to be overclocked now is the iOS UI, it should have to be polished well to match the original one.
For WiFi boosting, have you tried Wifi Fixer or Wifi Analyzer, you can change your WiFi channels with it.
GPS chipset is very bad. It's just a copy, fake phone, so they have used the cheapest hardware parts for it, we should reconcile to it. Unless they somehow fix it in new firmware, but I don't think it's gonna happen in near future. The main market for this phone is China, so they don't hasten with any international changes. As GooApple sales director said to me: "we sold more then 500pcs aday, should this problem happend to every phone, i think all the phone should return to us". So maybe chinese people are just not as demanding as we are, and they are happy with the phone? Anyway, I think with a good administrative force all listed issues can be resolved in just one week.
By the way, as I know they are planning to produce new phone in January with the 3G support. No info about any other new hardware at the moment.
Meantime we have to add new issues to the list:
39. GPS is very slow to find my location (can take up to 30 minutes).
40. Built in FM Transmitter does not work.
41. Importing/exporting my contacts from the phone to google.com. Plus the Account and Sync options on the settings menu isn't reporting the respective field (i.e.: only Picassa, books and gmail is able to sync. Contacts is not on the list).
42. In last gooapple_ios_11.12.08 firmware it doesn't react on first home button push after lock screen, it only shows unlock screen after the second home button push or fast twice push.
Updates in the last gooapple_ios_11.12.08 firmware:
Increase in task manager.
Blocking state to increase unread text message reminder.
Debug chinese QQ picture upside down.
Some Google applications added (en maps, gmail, voice..)
Task Manager.
Standby SMS prompts.
Double-click the home button shows running/standby apps and kill possibility like in original iOS.
Plus issue 42 added.
I haven't tried all new features in gooapple_ios_11.12.08 I don't want to use it because of the 42 issue. Now I'm using previous gooapple_ios_11.11.30 version. If anyone already installed and running the gooapple_ios_11.12.08 please give us your feedback.
DanADaMan, maybe you should try to make the data backup in stock recovery mode first and install firmware update after that? Maybe this should keep all your apps in and give you the new firmware? (haven't tried by myself)
jontelang, Sure, Android UI works much better with it, but I personally don't want to use it on this phone, it would be too simple and means you gave up making iOS UI ROM better.
As a side note, I've noticed that the phone is able to provide extraordinary 2D & 3D performance. I don't agree with the comment "It's just a copy, fake phone, so they have used the cheapest hardware parts for it, we should reconcile to it." you posted earlier Cyber_Dude, because I've seen cheap devices and this is nothing like it.
I do believe that the dev team has issues supporting the phone chipset due to the novelty that presents at the current time. This processor came out only at the end of June 2011 (fairly new).
News about MTK MT6573 Processor
Monday, June 13, 2011 3:25:26 AM America/Los_Angeles
Since the release MTK MT6516 processor, there is lots of Android phones in the market, which support GSM network and dual SIM card smartphone. But later, when Qualcomm, Broadcom and other smartphone processor manufacturer access into the field, mtk's dimmed. MTK MT6573 is the only hope in the future.
The end of June, 2011, we will share the latest trends with you, with the following new star.
Time: the first smartphone with MT6573 processor has been assembled, the major integrators, solution providers have had contact with, the reaction generally very good, have begun to prepare the relevant program models. As far as know, next month the first smartphone with MT6573 processor will unveiled.
Performance: As MT6573 is positioned in the low-end smartphone, we should not expect performance of deification, but the actual test performance to facilitate more than Qualcomm MSM7227, while MT6573 with the 3D acceleration in the multimedia DSP will give you a surprise. Currently sent to the integrators, solution providers of 3G features are still several prototype debugging.
Programs: MT6573 and MT6516 share same pins, and the both chips can be exchange without any hardware change, this will save cost on design for smartphone manufacturers.

macsga, But have you test it side by side with the iPhone 4 (not talking about 4S)?
Sure if comparing with other copies it's a winner. It's the best choice if you want to buy an iPhone replica for the price of the used iPhone 4 and you're not too picky. But it's a huge contrast with the original iPhone 4 UI performance, speed and hardware. And at the present time it's not totally ready for the wide international market due to the all listed issues. That's why I have started this thread, all together we can make it better. Unfortunately GooApple's dev team/engineers do nothing for it, local market and the new phone's version is their main goal at the moment. I know that because I've contacted with the GooApple sales director for the last 3 weeks.
As I have posted before they used MTK6513 it's cut MTK6573 without 3G support. It's good but not the best one. Anyway CPU is not the main problem of GooApple V5. The low capacity battery is much bigger failure. The android-sale.com is just a reseller, they can write anything they want to sell the phones more efficiently.
Hehe, I do have a 4s and (you're right) side by side there's nothing like it. That's why I gave up on iOS UI and turned to the android native one. I do believe that it's a perfect android testbed though. And for 230 Eur (retail price) that the 32Gb model cost me; well I can't really complain.
So; I totally agree! Let's try and make it better
The UI might be faster if you lower the resolution (i.e.: draw @ 480x320 and not the retina native resolution this phone has). It's zoom capabilities should cover the gap and reduce choppiness. Of course, this is just a crazy thought of mine...
macsga, Where have you got it for 230 EURO for 32GB? Official resellers like android-sale.com and rofen.net selling 32GB model for $319.99 (245 EURO) without shipping cost.
How could you lower the resolution? And why? If you want lower resolution you just should buy cheaper GooApple 3G version and it has faster UI response: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqAevweocKs

I got it before the EUR/USD was at 1/1.29 which is what you just calculated . The lower resolution (magnified) would in my opinion give the fast and smooth feeling the 3G has.
As per why I didn't go for the 3G, I did not, because of the retina display the V5 has. The official replacement for a retina display from Apple goes up to 390EUR+pnp, where I got the whole phone for 230 (OK plus 11$ shipping). In the meanwhile I have an android phone to play with (apart from my 4s). Fair deal.
I just wiped the phone and tried to load the ios 12-08-11 rom. Got an error something about not being a signed rom. I reinstalled the ios 12-01-11 ios rom no problem.
Anyone else have problems loading the latest ios rom?
Thanks
is this real?
i have heard that the Gooapple v5 is very good, and it is the same display as the real iphone 4, and can exchange with the iphone 4 display, does this ture?

There are newer ones from 2011.12.10 on http://rom.gooapple.com use those. Hopefully you won't have the same issues. Correction: Unfortunately the new Android one is not signed- The iOS though works OK

Yes, it's real. You can watch exchanging one another, on youtube here:

The flickering at the corners of the screen is annoying on mine, has this developed from the latest ROM or did you guys see it in previous? I've only had it a few days and updated straight away. I've resorted to the android UI cos the IOS one was sluggish but am more than happy to swap back to help?!
What I did find was GTA III kills this phone. On launch the intro plays but as the game launches the screen goes black and the phone will not respond to any button pressing for an hour, then I think it kills the process and the phone comes back. Just don't try, unless someone can tell me otherwise?
Mine responds on one click of the home button right now but Wireless is pants and so is GPS!

How do I tell if I loaded 2011-12-08 or 2011-12-11?
I downloaded them on the 15th and loaded the Android one without any complaints of it being unsigned? Did it over the top of the version it came with though so not fresh install...
EDIT:
Thought it was worth adding how to get into engineers menu:

Is there a way to turn WiFi Tx from 20 to 40 or even more?
I need to root mine still
I never noticed flickering and I have to say that the latest 'iOS' rom is a bit faster on my device resulting in a rather good imitation while the previous was very choppy.
The only drawback is that the UI crashes every now and then. I do like the 'long press' function of the home button that is able to kill apps in the 'official' iOS mode plus I think for the 1st time since I owned this phone that I like more the iOS UI to the android one.
I do have to offer a couple of tips that I found through my xda search:
1. Using a program like Root Explorer (root) you may want to make the following directories as Read Only: /data/tombstones and /data/system/dropbox
This has as a result, that the phone won't be able to log into the main phone memory thus trimming down your available space.
2. *IF* you're using the iOS UI version of the rom you can safely(?) remove the following apps (I state them as bloatware) via Root Uninstaller (root):
-QQ input method and keyboard
-Chinese market
-Chinese Youtube (Yuku)
-Chinese Maps
-Chinese Weather (3 entries, remove all three)
-Chinese iBooks (Google books does the job)
3. Add the following app: Locale Select from the Market and choose your language of choice.
4. If you search the xda site you will be able to find signed Google Apps that (most of them) work with this phone.
Ah, one last thing: I found the best player for playing p0r... erm, Movies, MoboPlayer with the additional ArmV7VFP3 plugin. Supports almost every codec and srt file out there and respective char encodings. Please ignore the message: This program is not compatible with your device. Works like a charm, I swear.
Cheers.

[Q] Miktouch and Bulletproof -- differences?

Greetings. I just picked up a used MT4GS because I had to have a hwkbd and want to get it into top fighting condition. I've read through the posts on Bulletproof and MikTouch ROMs and am trying to understand what the real differences are. I'd appreciate any comments on features that one has that the other doesn't.
So far i have been able to determine:
In MikTouch, the screen capture is broken
This is my first Android phone, so i'm lacking context to understand a lot of the descriptions of changes.
Thanks
This phone is an oldie but a goodie, and welcome to the board.
I just came off of miktouch, which is a clean sense experience, but I was getting reboots on this ROM (don't know why, could have been a problem on my end). My understanding is the miktouch is slightly newer than bulletproof, and is based on a newer HTC firmware (this is for the version 0.7 miktouch, which is the most recent and the one you want to use).
If you need sense, then I think this is a good rom, but probably either one is good. They are both widely reported as stable, so I am not sure if my own experience regarding reboots is just a rare exception.
If you are not committed to the sense framework, I highly recommend scverhagen's CM9.1, which is very solid in my experience. I have used v12 for at least a month, and v13 came out yesterday, and is so far (knock wood) rock solid.
There are quite a few CM10.X variations available, and I've tried several. In my experience (and on my device) they are not as completely rock solid as the CM9.1, which is the only reason I am not using one as a DD. That said, they are quite mature, and are in wide use by many who want to be on the later CM versions.

Thanks for your comments. Having almost no experience with Android, i don't really know if i object to the Sense overlay or not. I have read that losing Sense loses a lot of the capabilities of the camera, and the camera is the other reason i got this phone (with the keyboard).
Anyway, i just finished unlocking the phone now. Did you get S-Off on yours?

I believe that was once true, but I think most of the camera issues have since been solved. I don't use the high end functions of the camera much. I think also there were some problems with 1080p video, which have also since been solved.
The CM roms are based off of the google android base code, and so they are able to work with certain apps that may not work with the version on which both bulletproof and miktouch are based, which is version gingerbread, android 2.3. CM 9.1 is based on android 4.0 (icecream sandwich). and CM 10.X is based on android 4.1-4.3. Chrome browser requires min android 4.0, and is probably the best browser.

Yes, I did S-off mine. There is a post that describes the procedure using a wire to short between a spare uSD card and a very small hole at a precise time. The S-off is somewhat handy as it eliminates one step in flashing ROMs, namely, extracting a file from the ROM and separately flashing that single file (using fastboot) after flashing the ROM itself the 'normal' way, but is not necessary, and I would not suggest it as it is kind of tricky (but if you feel lucky...). I think it took me around 20 tries to finally get it right.
Hope this helps, and I would suggest starting with CM 9.1, as it will give you a more 'pure' android experience. Although some do like the Sense overlay, I don't care for it, and it is a lot less customizable.
Yes, the original sense camera produced excellent photos and videos, especially in low light, which I've never matched with others since. One person (can't remember who) who used later ROMs on a daily basis said he used to swap back to sense whenever he wanted to use the camera at a particular event. So I guess that's another option for you. For me, I've stuck mainly with CM9.1 for daily use (camera wasn't central to my 'buy' decision), and dabbled with other ROMs evenings and weekends.

Thank you. I actually did a simple comparison (talk.maemo .org /showpost.php?p=1378114&postcount=27) between the camera and my previous phone's camera to see which handled low light better, and my results agree with your experience. This is a pretty high priority for me.
I think your comments confirm for me that i do want to stick with GB + Sense for now. That brings me back to the OP though. From reading through the threads for the respective ROMs i think i have another difference:
* Bulletproof has a more colorful customized theme/paradigm.
* Bulletproof has some geeky utilities like bash shell and nano editor
Still wondering about substantive differences. I'll probably flash Bulletproof unless i hear of any disadvantages of it relative to Miktouch.
Edit: meh can't post links blah blah.

... For an updated version, try the Miktouch ROM. It is based on the last HTC stock ROM, 1.63.531.2 and thus has a bit better performance in several key areas (GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi) and has more updated tweaks, as well. Bulletproof is based on the original stock ROM.

Hmm i thought that the fixes had gotten incorporated in Bulletproof in the later revision (1.1). :/
From what I read on another forum, Bloater is no longer being developed or supported.

This may be a problem because i need e.g. Exchange Mail and i read that it's been removed in the custom ROMs.
Well i've used clockworkmod recovery to make a nandroid of the stock system and have flashed Bulletproof 1.1 and the UV5 undervolting kernel. I'll see if it can be made to do what i want/need. Kudos to WeekendsR2Short for archiving the files so they are still available and to the hackers who put the ROM together.
I'm still looking for comments on current, real differences between the two ROMs, particularly from those in the know about whether there are meaningful differences in performance due to the origin of each. I would expect the fixes that went into the later stock ROMs also could be incorporated into Bulletproof, regardless of whether it was based on that ROM, but were they? I see guides from Blue6 on tweaks for network performance and GPS performance, so it seems he was aware of the issues.
Edit: I don't have working wifi so i'm guessing a custom kernel is a no go without S-off. That's what i thought but then i couldn't understand how people can run ICS without S-off. Obviously my assumptions are wrong somewhere... I'll reflash the boot image from Bulletproof 1.1.

Bulletproof 1.1 is still based on the original stock ROM (1.28), whereas Miktouch is based on the 1.63 release. In the 1.63 release, HTC made some major improvements in GPS, Bluetooth, and overall smoothness of the ROM as well as closed some security issues. Miktouch retains all the base stuff, including the Genius subsystem. By default, however, the Genius button has been remapped to do search, but there is a small patch that can be applied to revert the mapping back to the Genius function.
I've tried Bulletproof and though it is very stable, I still prefer Miktouch. It just seems more "fluid", especially with the patches like Liquidsmooth Rosie, and No-scrolling Cache. I also like the CM9.1 version from sverhagen, now on r13 release. It is very stable and works very well.
But, as others have stated, if the camera is very important, only the stock-based ROMs like Miktouch are going to give you 100% of what this phone can do. That's because HTC put a lot of the control of the image processor directly into the Sense framework, which of course is lacking in other ROMs. Other ROMs can access basic functions and do processing using the CPU, but cannot access some of the higher functions of the dedicated image processor. The CM9.1 camera is good, but if you look at photos side-by-side with those taken with Miktouch, for instance, you can see a difference in depth of field, exposure, lighting, compression. It is subtle, but visible. Most people probably would not care or even notice, so it is a personal choice.

Thanks, that's a very useful summary.
OT:
I flashed the MikTouch 0.7 ROM and most of the patches that you uploaded in its thread. What difference do you see with the MikTouch-No-Scrolling-Cache patch? From my understanding of scrolling caches, disabling them would make it less smooth rather than more.
Answering my own question (OP):
Now that i have flashed both ROMs i can mostly answer my own question about the differences. As i had guessed from my reading, Bulletproof is a more complete or thorough mod. It provides some nice options for the quick settings and the status icons that sit at the top right. It has cut out most of the extra apps, and hidden the Kid's Zone icon. It has a custom theme and keeps the other themes.
A brief play with some network access suggests that MikTouch may be smoother more optimized due to its more updated origins. On the other hand, it feels less cohesive and polished.
It might be summed up by saying that, in terms of visible modifications, Bulletproof goes overboard, while MikTouch isn't quite enough.
So if Bulletproof were based on the latest stock ROM and wasn't missing a couple "bloatware" features that i want to keep, i would reflash it now. Because it's not, i'll give MikTouch a go for a while.
I'm trying to establish, as much as possible, the functionality my Maemo device had. I'm going to post my progress here for any to whom it might be useful.
notes
I've copied my Conboy notes to Tomdroid, but the ancient stable version doesn't support editing and the beta version (0.7.2) corrupts notes with bulleted lists. I really liked Conboy, so i hope the devs can get things sorted. Development seems to be really slow, which surprises me considering the popularity of Tomboy.
terminal
I encountered the hilarious problem with Terminal Emulator that others have: the forward slash key (of all things) only produces tildes, making the hwkb completely useless for terminal work. Someone suggested a Connectbot connection to local, and that versatile little app seems like a little slice of home coming from a linux environment. You can put an icon on your desktop that will open you right to that connection, too.
I'm still trying to figure out the best way to modify my keyboard mapping. I'd like to make the www. a Tab and repurpose the android keys and extra (right) shift, perhaps as arrows and a CTRL. The spacebar is also obnoxiously out of reach so i might move it to the Back key. Fortunately, Connectbot has some sensible workarounds that make these changes less urgent.
I have the latest ES File Explorer but the locked down nature of Android seems to make any kind of file system activities hopelessly complicated compared with a more conventional linux system. I was trying to install this nano editor binary but am not sure if remounting root R/W and unzipping it to / is going to cause issues.
spreadsheet
I've been using gnumeric on my N900. TBD
e-reader
FB Reader and PDF reader on the N900. TBD
offline maps
Used Modrana and Navit on N900. Both have strengths and weaknesses. TBD
misc.
It's nice that Flashlight is pre-loaded but i can't see any way to leave it on while i do something else on the phone. I think the custom setting in the quick settings of Bulletproof could do that. :/ It is a nice bright flash we have here.
The stock camera app combines the functionality of three separate apps on N900: BlessN900, Panorama, and the stock camera app, and in a much snappier interface, albeit with fewer options. I'm excited about that. I need to find an app that will simulate a scan from a photo (perspective correction), though.
Offline dictionary, wikipedia, and a gps recorder are also needed. TBD
Of course, porting a few classic games and apps (e.g. Doom, Starcon2, Gweled, MAME) with a few hours work each isn't going to happen in Android like it did with Maemo and its SDL framework. The ability to achieve feature parity ends with the software selection...
Will edit when i have made more progress.
ETA: I have S-OFF now. I thought i could leave it alone until i tired of GB and/or stock kernel, but i should have known better. I used my Linux Mint14 (64 bit) box, a random USB cable (original HTC one is presumably with the original owner), and a twist-tie, and to be safe i flashed back my nandroid of stock first. After all the wind up about original this, 32 bit os, and precise that, i got it on the first try and it didn't wipe my SD card.
First thing i did is flash a custom splash screen. I made one and it was realizing it wouldn't work without S-OFF that pushed me over the edge.

Not sure what your needs are as for a notes app, but I use the one HTC included in the ROM simply called Notes. It can import/export but I haven't used that feature or know the format. Also, Adobe PDF reader comes with the ROM, too. These are both in Miktouch. I have also run into that keyboard issue with Terminal, someone posted a revised Terminal app that fixed that issue but now I don't know where it is located. Perhaps look around on the Play Store. As to spreadsheets and other office-type apps, QuickOffice is now owned by Google and was made free in the Play Store. It can read/write most MS Office documents. And Google Maps now has the feature of storing offline maps for when you don't have network access.

Yeah i had just discovered QuickOffice was free after finding the usual subjects (Gnu apps, OO, etc) aren't available and presumably decent since Google decided to buy it. I vaguely remember there being a QuickOffice on my Handera(?) a decade ago. Wonder if it's the same thing.
The attention to detail in the ConnectBot app makes it actually possible to hack system files, and its support for copy and paste, combined with that nano binary i got installed, lets me copy-paste text into files. The lack of universal clipboard and general lack of time-honored keyboard shortcuts is driving me up the wall. I sure took that for granted on maemo. Android just isn't designed with a hardware keyboard in mind. :/
Nano is super flaky with poor refresh, and without keyboard arrows it's a bit hard to use. It would be impossible without ConnectBot's workaround for lack of CTRL, though. Can anyone recommend a good simple GUI text editor for editing config files etc.? One that supports copy/paste, unlike that half-assed ES File Explorer note editor atrocity.
Anyway, I used the above setup to make the changes to the gps.conf file recommended here.
I'm also finding the long-press on Home is a passable imitation of the camera-button or CTRL-BACKSPACE shortcut to task switcher on the N900 too.
I'm going to give the Sneaky Pete kernel a try now.

For hacking system files, an easy app to use is Kernel Tuner. Even though I'm using the stock kernel on Miktouch, I use Kernel Tuner to set my min CPU and governor (I have 1134 max/192 min and conservative governor on both cores) and I set the I/O scheduler to noop with a 2048kb cache. The app has the built in ability to make edits to system files and is geared for Sense ROMs.
Also, you might want to download/install the newer Swype keyboard from Play Store. It is newer/better than the Swype that is built in to the HTC ROM. The built in Swype can be disabled (I use MyBackup Pro to freeze certain things that are built in, like the Group messaging and Tmobile ID stuff that I never use).

Have you found some of Blue6ix' posts yet? He listed ways to remap the keys to whatever you wanted, and I seem to recall keyboard shortcuts was one of the things lamented when he moved to a phone without a hardware keyboard. (though I don't use shortcuts myself so can't say more)

Yeah that's what i linked to a few posts back when i mentioned it. I've spent a while playing around with it now that i have a functioning nano editor and bash. I found, to my disappointment, that CTRL can't be used as a modifier until Android 3. At least that's what i gathered. The amount of conflicting information on every thing i search for is mind-boggling, both due to vendor and device differences and android API differences, i assume. Anyway, no CTRL isn't too big of a deal since the standard CTRL-+ shortcuts aren't really standard on it, and VX Connectbot makes it easy to generate CTRL+? inputs. I switched to VX, an improved Connectbot fork, when i realized i had no way to generate angle brackets or pipe characters. VX Connectbot enables the SYM selector pop-up and and lets you map most buttons. It's really quite nice.
The more amusing/aggravating thing i discovered is that if you map a key to TAB, it actually is "symlinked" to DPAD_DOWN (keycode 20). That means it behaves vaguely TAB-like in the browser, but not in text editors. I found this out using the debug show keycode option in VX Connectbot. So the obvious system remap for the asinine www./.com key is pointless, and there doesn't seem to be any way to get a real tab input using just a remap. I'm not sure how much further up the pipeline you can go with a closed ROM -- really have no idea -- but again at least there's a way to get TAB in a shell with VX. I did, in desperation, try just entering the keycode for TAB (61) in the key layout file, instead of the enum name. Hilarity and a dead keyboard ensued... yay for cwm recovery. :silly:
So now most of my grand plans for modding the keyboard layout are sort of in tatters. I think I will
map the right shift, genius, sym, and alt keys to cursor keys (just too hard to consistently press the dpad left or right without getting an up or down in there somewhere). That's similar to the layout i'm used to on my N900.
I'd move sym to Home and make Back another spacebar. The spacebar has to be pushed close to its middle on this keyboard, and it's too far away to make sense.
probably remap www. to SHIFT_RIGHT so that it can be tab in Connectbot (built in option)
that leaves just the menu key as redundant (well, and two shifts and space bars after the changes). TBD
Edit: After reading through this, it is clear that if i went with an ICS ROM i could remap as intended. Prior to Froyo the key map files were much less versatile. I think i could get TAB working if i modded the binary keymap file, but it's probably not worth it.

The best ICS w/Sense ROM for this phone, in my opinion, was one from sun_dream. It was a direct port from the Sensation, using that phone's 3.3.2 ROM release as the base. There was an 3.3.3 release port but I found it to be much less usable/stable. The best ICS ROM, though, is scverhagen's CM9.1r13. It isn't Sense based, but it is very stable, excellent battery, and everything works as it should (for a CM ROM).

Without having even used an Android phone before, i'm not partial to Sense, but i decided after the previous discussion that i'm going to stick with GB for now for the extra camera quality. However, after this tweaking i think i will make a final nandroid and then flash scverhagen's CM9.1r13 to see if the android really is greener on the other side.
Is it worth going all the way to JB, or are those much less functional?
I've set the Miktouch keyboard layout up with relatively minor changes for now:
www. = SYM
Home key = SPACE
SYM = Left Up (caught again by the limited keymapping vocabulary of GB. If you set to DPAD_LEFT, it registers as DPAD_DOWN when the device is in landscape mode...
ALT (right) = Right Down " " "
Genius key = ALT (right)
I found this post and this post to be useful references when changing the layout.

I can only speak for my own tastes and experiences when discussing a ROM. I personally run Miktouch on my MT4GS. I've tried nearly every ROM available, and given them a good try out. For Sense, I'm gonna run Miktouch, just nothing else comes close to the stability. If I were using a non-sense ROM, I would use scverhagen's CM9.1r13, which is as close to the stability of Miktouch as I've found in a non-stock ROM. I've tried the CM10, 10.1, and 10.2 ROMs but for me the differences just aren't worth the little quirks and issues. Now, many people don't mind those things, or may not even face those same quirks as they might use their phone differently than me. On my Nook Tablet, I use the CM10.1.3 Stable release, as it is so rock-solid. But on this phone, I want 100% (or as close to 100% as is possible) uptime without having to make excuses for why that call got dropped or that text didn't send or my Bluetooth disconnected, etc.
