Launch app from power menu? [$10 Reward!] - General Questions and Answers

I searched far and wide in Google, and apktool seems to do the trick; however, there are only tutorials on how to add advance options, like recovery, or screenshot. I am looking for a way to launch apps from the power menu.
The first person to answer my question fully will be reward a $10 Google Play Credit! Thank you in advance!

You're asking a very ambiguous question. Are you asking why am I giving money away or why do I need to launch the app from the power menu? If it's the former, I am just giving it away as a incentive and a form of gratitude to those people who like to help out another fellow.

Power menu? Or from a lock screen?

Power menu on the lock screen and anywhere else.

I'm very aware that many custom Roms have an option for this.
There is a section where you can add shortcuts to the power menu, and in the shortcuts you can select an application. I have done this on Liquid Smooth, I'm not sure if its on CyanogenMod but it should be. Just check a few advanced Roms that have power menu mods.
It should have an option to launch an app from the power menu.

As TheArc said, many rom does.
Recommanded to check Slimrom topics > either "[ROM][SlimKat Official][4.4.4] Stable 7.0" or "[ROM] SlimSaberKat-jflte-4.4.4-20140807 [unofficial SlimKat builds] for jflte".
Fast, really stable for daily use and you will find to any shorcut on the power menu.

P.

If you're thinking of launching any app from any screen, you might check out an app called "START!? - Menu-style Drawer" from Uchi Crew...if that's what you're looking for. You can bring it up by sliding up from home button (like launching google now)...atleast it's like that on my phone.

I'm just interested in modifying the existing rom to add a shortcut/app in the power menu. I will see if I can implement what liquid smooth did in the existing rom with ApkTool. If someone already know how to implement something of similar nature in the stock rom, please let me know. I will give you the $10 reward!

Does any rom besides LiquidSmooth have this feature?

I'm sure OmniRom, Carbon. And CyanogenMod has this

I tried multiple roms, and it seems LiquidSmooth and Carbon has this feature.
If someone can completely solve this new question of mine, I am willing to up my reward to $50 Google Play Credit. What I am trying to achieve is to put an option to dial a number to check my balance. I have a sim pin, which locks my sim from intruders. While it is still connected to my carrier, no service can be use without a pin, besides carrier level numbers, like balance and minures, or Emergency Number. On my samsung and sony phone, dialing this number on a sim locked phone works, but Nexus and aosp like roms seem to shows opposite results. From analyzing android source code, it seem it is becuase the dialer checks if the phone is connected to a carrier before dialing. It is really connected to a cell rower, but the sim pin is preventing aosp dialer from dialing out because it thinks there is no service. Is there anyway to trick the aosp dialer to think it is connected to a service, bypass the check, or replace the dialer all together?
I know this is a complicated question, so that is why I am willing to give a $50 to the person who can fully answer my question.

[SOLVED] Toggle Wi-fi with Long Press of Search Soft Key?

Hi all,
I would absolutely love to be able to toggle my Android wi-fi connection with a long press of the search soft key. This would be ideal when launching some app that would benefit from a faster connection and would save me returning to the home screen, activating the wi-fi and then returning back to the app.
I've searched everywhere to find an app, or combination of apps (Button Shortcut + something else) that could achieve this but have hit a dead end.
Anyone know of an app that could achieve this?
Alternativily I do have the Android IDE set-up at home, does anyone know how I can hook the long button press (from within all app's) and toggle the wi-fi connection?
Thanks in advance,
Nexus One user (I'm not rooted)
Ok, so I've come to the conclusion there's no apps out there at the moment that will do this so I have started writing my own.
I have successfully hooked the search button and can get a basic activity launched with a long press of the search key from the home screen and within other apps.
All I need now to is to find the code that allows me to enabled/disable wi-fi. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good example?
Thanks, will share my app once its finished!
I now have this working on my Nexus One, needs a couple of tweaks but it's nearly ready to release to the Android Market.
Would anyone care to do a bit of beta testing for me? If so I can PM the apk once it's ready.
Also, if appropriate can a mod please move this into the "Android Apps and Games" forum.
I have now released this to the Market as "In-App Wifi Toggle".
awesome app, thanks for sharing!

Can you tell me what phone and version you're using and what button you're using to activate the app?
I like it. I'm using an N1. I put it on the search soft key.
Works great on my HTC Legend with 2.1 Sense!
Thx!

Very nice... Has anyone tested this on a G1?
I have been using the Toggle WiFi app set to the keyboard shortcut (search-w) but this seems a little more "fluid"...

I have a friend with a G1 who's been doing some testing for me. The version on the market at present will only work on a short press of the green/call button. The search button on the pull out keyboard doesn't work. Now obviously a short press of the green/call button is normally assigned to shortcut to the phone app and most people won't want to re-assign this and so I have made some adjustments so it will now work on a long press of the green/call button. I will be releasing this update to the market in the next couple of days when I get a moment.
FYI I've just uploaded the new version with the added long press of Call/Green button.
Vary nice app, works as described on HTC Droid Incredible. Like how the systems gives me the choice of Wifi toggle or google search on the long press now. Very nice. Would have paid for it....
Any chance of releasing the source code for us wannabe devs to learn from? I'd love to modify the app to call a specific person on a long search press, as I find the dialer to be the most annoying part of Android.
Hi just downloaded it and works fantastic on my Legend!!
Thank you very much!

I will eventually release the source code yes once I've put my website together but not right this minute I'm afraid.
On a seperate note I've been beavering away coding "In-App Bluetooth Toggle". Frankly, its been an absolute slut because I would like the app to work with all versions of Android from 1.5 upwards but the bluetooth API only became available from 2.0. I've been using a complex combination of hacking and reflection to get the pre 2.0 versions working and now have a single app that works on both a v1.6 G1 and v2.1 Nexus One.
Are there any v1.5 (Hero/Moment/Magic/Pulse/CLIQ) users out there willing to do some debug testing for me? I can email you a APK file.
Any help appreciated!
You know what I'd love, it if there was a way to emulate all of the hardware keys, like Menu, Home, Back, etc on the screen rather than by using the hardware keys. Any possibility for something like that using your idea here for Wifi toggle?

Would you expect such an emulator to be visible always, in every application? That would seem rather intrusive in my opinion.
Great App. It works good on the HTC Wildfire. The only problem is I(we) don't have a call hardkey, therefore I can either use the wifi or the bluetooth toggle or use the popup menu(which is not very "clean")
Hi!
Can you share how you manage to capture long press on search button by code? It will be greatly appreciate

[Q] Recently used apps in Notification area - ala new Sense

Hey all,
Does anyone know of an app that achieves the display of recently used apps in the notification dropdown area?
Essentially, performing the same function that a long press on the home button does, but obviously eliminating the need to press a button.
I've been looking for something like this for a good while, and was pleasantly surprised to see HTC had included this very function in their latest version of Sense.... when I went to the HTC London meet last week .
Unfortunately, the HTC guys demoing informed me there is currently no way to obtain this feature for current handsets.
To see what I am referring to, see the video below...
46sec <---> 51 sec
Is there an app that exists for this?
Thanks in advance,

I think that's discussed in another thread - I remember reading its not a 'proper' power down, that allows for such a quick start up.
Anyway, back on topic...
Actually I have been looking for something similar... My wife has a mytouch slide... And when you pull down notification tray it has recent 4 now I haven't tried scrolling sideways like that guy did... But that shows that it is possible cause the slide shows 4 recent...
Just have to find someone to port that I guess
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Rather than a port, which sounds like more effort, I thought an app to enable this functionality may exist.
It seems not?
its going to need a port i think, i would hope for a slightly modified version that would allow us to pin apps to it or even widgets a la galaxy s.
If you hold down the home button for a couple seconds you'll get a list of the eight last used apps.
smart bar does this an more. recent apps in drop down and/or favs and/or you can choose a certain app and/or many many more options, i cant remember. you have option to enable all or only recent apps via settings and checking off the check boxs.
i use on my a81e tablet and it works well. my long press of home button is buggy due to fw so this come in handy very much
here
Does smartbar have a big footprint?
Would really love an app that does 'just' this.

NATIVE SIP is built into STOCK ROM!!! Can someone mod framework to make functional?

NATIVE SIP functionality is built into the stock ROM, Here is how I found it...
First, you'll need to download Launcher Pro Plus (go to 4 Shared and find the app). Once downloaded, longpress on your homescreen and chose "Shortcuts", then "Activities", then "Phone', then scroll down to the "Sip Settings" listing (which accesses com.android.phone.sip.SipSettings). Click on it and it will make a shortcut on your homescreen. You have found the SIP Menu built into the framework of your stock ROM! Below the Sip Settings option are two others under the listing "Phone", which access com.android.phone.sip.SipEditor, and com.android.phone.SipCallOptionHandler. Hope this helps everyone out. I poured through line after line of code only to realize the answer was under my nose the whole time!
{{{NOTE: The two options in red do not open up to any menus, but the first one in green is a GO}}} FYI, I don't even think you need to be rooted to do this.
Also, there are settings to mess around with the SIM lock and SIM PIN, carrier settings, and other functions and menus that I always see in the system apps but can never seem to access. A lot of these shortcuts open up to user interface menus. Awesome!
And props to Arrrghhh, you indeed were correct in assuming that it was the carrier that probably limits access to SIP options. However, it seems that it is not actually removed from the build, only the option is removed from the Call Settings Menu, and the settings are somehow disabled from sticking, unfortunately. Check it, once you access the SIP Menu, press the scroll back button in the very top left-hand corner of the page. It'll drop you back off at call settings. Is there a way to possibly edit the actual Phone.apk or Settings.apk, that one may replace the SIP option back in the menu??? Hit me up.
Nice to know its a bit ugly to be forced to install an additional launcher just for the activits, but maybe after setup it could be purged.
also nice now being able to disabl sim-pin (i searched for it in the native menu but did not find anything)
Only question I have so far:
how do one make an actual SIP/VoiP call with native phone app?

Well, truthfully I haven't had time to enter my SIP credentials and test it yet...but will later and will post results.
I believe that once info is entered and account is set up, it should ask when I make a call whether I wish to place it via voice or internet (data). We'll see...

Nice you found it!
In order to modify this stuff (which is do-able, but can cause bootloops if not done correctly) you will probably need to de-compile the APK.
Otherwise, if you had the source - you could just modify the overlay. But I would think it's still possible - or even some other way to launch this app without having to install a 3rd party launcher.
You can use activity manager. eg.
Code:
am start com.android.phone/.sip.SipSettings
in adb or terminal emulator.

So, I have downloaded ROMzilla from XDA member digitalhigh, and am going to decompile some stuff and see if I can throw it back together and have it work. As it turns out, everytime I enter my SIP credentials and exit the SIP menu, the info I entered is automatically cleared. So there is some code that needs to be changed, if not within the Phone.apk then within the android framework. I am going to work on my PC with the stock ROMs that ShabbyPenguin posted and test it in Eclipse first. Let me know if there is any particular approach I should take. Thanks.

My most missed feature at this time is

Tried it to get this work, but got stuck unfortunately.
Any wishes or ideas? Or help?
Maybe the lockscreen features
I miss it
The back kill button too
Status bar mods without flashing mods?

And i miss that the homescreen does not have a landscape mode.
And the longpress-backbutton, too.
I miss the Theme Chooser and the Kill button aswell. I also miss DSP Settings from CM10, Lockscreen shortcut customization, Kernel Settings and DPI settings.

LED color and flashing speed
quiet hours
display brightness levels
and others like:
move apps to sd
and definitely power menu and back button > kill app
Please no fantasy features. Apps2SD is not possible since ICS
Also, +1 for "Power toggles" - move it to /system/app and you have even a GPS toggle. Use it since day one.
In addition to OP, I miss "slide2wake". This must be compiled in the kernel.

I asked the dev (rovo89) already.
BTW, you are the first person who called me "shaft"... I'm feeling home right now
Well, I think some things from CM are possible to implement. Surely we can't mimic a CM and most of the features are possible via 3rd party apps - just use them. For example the dealbraker "power toggles": I would never start to implement CM toggles because PT is much more powerful and easy to use.
LED control? Use Light Flow.
Quiet hours? Use Llama.
In general, don't be afraid of installing 3rd party apps, because the features in CM are "3rd party" too. If an app is extra installed or in the framework doesn't make a difference - they need RAM and CPU power also, moreover some "features" are extra apps also (DSP settings).
Let's focus on small things which aren't easily possible to install:
- back button kill app -> I'm working on that, need help eventually, someone interested?
- Lockscreen shortcuts/weather -> Maybe we can implement the 4.2 lockscreen?
- slide2wake -> Omar/arman68? Kernel masters?
- Power menu -> this should be easy, will take a look
- Display brightness -> arman68, can you do that?

Original Thread here:

But my f***ing RAZR instantly vibrates and reboots as soon as I long press power and I can't find the reason. In another thread here at XDA someone implemented this in his XT910 and this works, these are the same code lines...
I double/triple checked everything and I will throw the phone out of the window if I spend more time with it now
Anyone an idea? This is really a simple mod, my god!

Aviate - Tips and Tricks...

I wanted to start a thread to share info about the new launcher Aviate. There's no shortage of threads on requesting invites, so let's not do that here.
If you have Aviate and are actively using it, come here and share.
Thanks!

I've been using it for a day now and I find it curiously intriguing. It's a totally fresh user experience that feels a little like Google Now to me.
Frankly, I never thought ANY launcher could pull my attention away from my custom-crafted (ok, OCD-crafted) user experience I designed using Nova Launcher. I have the same design on all of my mobile devices and it feels like part of my DNA.
Can't say yet if Aviate will be a permanent replacement for my Nova-based home, but I seem to be staying with it.
Just saw the video presentation. I'm looking foward to have a little more feedback about this app.
I liked the fact that it categarises apps and I disliked (as in google now) the fact that you must have your gps on in order to take full advantage of it. Makes a lot of sense and it's very useful but I don't like the idea of sharing my whereabouts all the time...
Been playing with it since yesterday as well on my HTC One.
Like it so far, like the idea of the activities changing during the day. Not sure how it's controled though. Today ie, I set it to Work, and when checking my phone later on, it was set on Home... don't know why.
Of course the custom side of it is quite limited, I assumed it will be better with later versions.
Haven't figured out yet how to get shortcuts to contact phone numbers implemented in Aviate.
Any ideas?
Don't have "morning" and "night time" screens. Only "home" whole day. Any solution ?
To change between Fahrenheit and Celsius, long press on the weather notification and tap the toggle to change.

The only method I have found is to add a contact widget. Not perfect, but close.
I also haven't figured out how to save a bookmark icon to my favorites section on the home screen.
Another thing I would like to do is switch between the light and dark theme automatically based on time of day.

Thanks for the response. This is a deal-breaker for me, as I need easy access (direct-dial shortcuts) to my frequently-called contacts. I wrote to the Aviate team. I'll report back.
I think I like this launcher

I was able to get an invite for aviate and loaded it up and started setting it up, when I started to wonder if this was the launcher for me. I loved the idea of chameleon launcher back when it came out, how it changed your home screen based on time of day. This seems similar in many ways. But then it dawned on me, I generally do a lot of the same things on my phone no matter where I am. That being the case, would someone like me benefit from this type of launcher?
I have uninstalled and moved on.
Not being able to do direct dial shortcuts the way I want is a deal-breaker for me.
Plus, I found that I really don't need access to different apps at different times of the day. I like always knowing where they are - all the time.
More power to those that find they like Aviate. For me, it was a swing-and-a-miss.
Hi. Just found this thread. I'm loving Aviate so far and, I'm sure the customisation will improve in future releases.
I would like more customisation of the 'spaces' (manual addition/removal etc) and better theming support. Overall, I like it a lot and in sticking with it, at least, for now!

I'm not seeing anything for landscape mode, probably another reason it is only supported on phones at this time. Does anyone know how to clear a location; as I accidentally clicked a nearby location now it keeps defaulting to it...?

That's exactly the same issue I'm having. Clicked on a local gift store and now I'm getting reminded about an 'occasion'. Actually it hasn't come up today so maybe it just disappears after a day or two. No way to clear manually...

How do people change the theme (mainly colours) of the UI? I can't figure that out. Is there even any Aviate settings anywhere? I must be blind or something
Thanks!

Pressing Menu button on my device reveals menu with "Settings" option (nothing else). But that takes me to the System Settings (Wifi, Bluetooth, Sound, Display, Storage, ...) So you do have Aviate specific Settings... hm!
