I wanted to start a thread to share info about the new launcher Aviate. There's no shortage of threads on requesting invites, so let's not do that here.
If you have Aviate and are actively using it, come here and share.
Thanks!

I've been using it for a day now and I find it curiously intriguing. It's a totally fresh user experience that feels a little like Google Now to me.
Frankly, I never thought ANY launcher could pull my attention away from my custom-crafted (ok, OCD-crafted) user experience I designed using Nova Launcher. I have the same design on all of my mobile devices and it feels like part of my DNA.
Can't say yet if Aviate will be a permanent replacement for my Nova-based home, but I seem to be staying with it.
Just saw the video presentation. I'm looking foward to have a little more feedback about this app.
I liked the fact that it categarises apps and I disliked (as in google now) the fact that you must have your gps on in order to take full advantage of it. Makes a lot of sense and it's very useful but I don't like the idea of sharing my whereabouts all the time...
Been playing with it since yesterday as well on my HTC One.
Like it so far, like the idea of the activities changing during the day. Not sure how it's controled though. Today ie, I set it to Work, and when checking my phone later on, it was set on Home... don't know why.
Of course the custom side of it is quite limited, I assumed it will be better with later versions.
Haven't figured out yet how to get shortcuts to contact phone numbers implemented in Aviate.
Any ideas?
Don't have "morning" and "night time" screens. Only "home" whole day. Any solution ?
To change between Fahrenheit and Celsius, long press on the weather notification and tap the toggle to change.

The only method I have found is to add a contact widget. Not perfect, but close.
I also haven't figured out how to save a bookmark icon to my favorites section on the home screen.
Another thing I would like to do is switch between the light and dark theme automatically based on time of day.

Thanks for the response. This is a deal-breaker for me, as I need easy access (direct-dial shortcuts) to my frequently-called contacts. I wrote to the Aviate team. I'll report back.

I was able to get an invite for aviate and loaded it up and started setting it up, when I started to wonder if this was the launcher for me. I loved the idea of chameleon launcher back when it came out, how it changed your home screen based on time of day. This seems similar in many ways. But then it dawned on me, I generally do a lot of the same things on my phone no matter where I am. That being the case, would someone like me benefit from this type of launcher?
I have uninstalled and moved on.
Not being able to do direct dial shortcuts the way I want is a deal-breaker for me.
Plus, I found that I really don't need access to different apps at different times of the day. I like always knowing where they are - all the time.
More power to those that find they like Aviate. For me, it was a swing-and-a-miss.
Hi. Just found this thread. I'm loving Aviate so far and, I'm sure the customisation will improve in future releases.
I would like more customisation of the 'spaces' (manual addition/removal etc) and better theming support. Overall, I like it a lot and in sticking with it, at least, for now!

I'm not seeing anything for landscape mode, probably another reason it is only supported on phones at this time. Does anyone know how to clear a location; as I accidentally clicked a nearby location now it keeps defaulting to it...?

That's exactly the same issue I'm having. Clicked on a local gift store and now I'm getting reminded about an 'occasion'. Actually it hasn't come up today so maybe it just disappears after a day or two. No way to clear manually...

Just came across this new launcher in the market, it is a free app. Definitely worth trying out, was using helix before this one and don't get me wrong I still love helix, but I have to say scrolling from screen to screen and up and down app drawer just have no lag at all, definitely worth trying out launcherpro beta made by Federico Carnales
I see no diffence really

Wow. I wasn't going to try this cause I was happy with sense. But this thing kicks the crap out of every launcher out there (except sense, I just love me some sense). Nice find, OP.
EDIT: I just noticed something sick! It actually does the helicopter view with multitouch as well as the home key! This will be an awesome home replacement once they add more options like rearranging the bottom row of icons

I agree with the pure speed of this thing once they add changing bottom icons and maybe screen indicator it would be on top of every launcher in my book.
Adding pages.
One thing to keep in mind if you add more pages. It loads default with 3 pages, 2 being the "main" widget page. If you add more pages like 5 or 7, page 2 is still the main widget page, it doesn't add pages equally on both ends, just on the right side, so your having to rearrange stuff.

Can't you just change the default page, so if you switch from 3 to 5, you can switch the default page from 2 to 3? That's one of the options in the Preferences page.
Yes you can. But you will have swip to the right 5 times to get to the last page.

I am with the group of people that were not given the option to use handcent as default. I even cleared all defaults and tried again. Oh well, it is pretty nice and I'm sure will continue to be developed.

When I was using the stock HTC Messaging app, it made me use that as the default. However, when I pushed the the AOSP Mms.apk (which just seems like the right thing to do to me... it works so much better) it asked me what program I would prefer to use. So, here's my suggestion:
rm the current Mms.apk, and then push whichever you prefer and see if it works.

New: Option to auto-rotate the launcher to landscape mode when the device is rotated.
My new favorite launcher. Fastest I've used by a large margin, not a single FC so far.
Needs two things to be perfect, to me:
1. shortcut customization
2. transition customization (ie, don't zoom in the app drawer, just redraw the screen...no transition needed)
If any of you haven't tried this one, give it a shot, the difference in speed and responsiveness gives me hope that other lag issues can be solved purely in software.
Still suing this even though it still wont open up Handcent instead of the stock app. I like that he added the home button within the app drawer. I'm sure the customization of the bottom apps is coming. looking at the site a lot of the comments are asking for it.
This is a pretty good home replacement. I always kinda missed the pinch zoom on home screen with launcher2, now i get the best of both
Very clean and smooth, but wont use until shortcuts can be changed. Just what they open (messaging for me) not necessarily the apps themselves.
This is the only thing that I've been missing since moving from a Sense ROM/launcher.
Does a nice scrollable widget exist that's similar to the stock Friendstream one?
EDIT: I've tried out Socialite, but it seems to never sync properly and eventually force closes on the CyanogenMod nightly builds.
I miss it too.

EDIT: I was just too tired to realize what I was doing incorrectly. Trying to get a widget setup that looks decent.
All of the different variants of the Sense style widgets look really "off" for some reason. Looking further, it's definitely the pictures, as they trail a bit off the left side of the widget. (See pic)
I'm also not fond of the left/right arrows on the widget. I only set up FB, so I don't need non-working buttons.

Use the scrollable version with ADW/LauncherPro. It is better than FriendStream.
Like so:
Nice setup TheBiles.
PureMessenger > friendstream with the ability to use skins, add email and sms along with twitter and FB to stream, ability to select preferred clients for clicked feed, and oodles of config settings in a nice scrollable UI with ADW or launcherPRO. Well worth a buck-fifty.
I wouldn't consider Pure messenger better than Friendstream myself.
It's nice... but sadly needs a few fixes in my opinion
1) Won't display 'mobile upload' picture notifications properly. It only shows 1 picture in the internal viewer with no way to go directly to the person's photo list.
2) Pictures display as filenames in the list view, rather than the actual thumbnail as sense does. (This might be considered user preference, but I'd prefer to see a picture rather than <randomwords>.jpg )
3) No support for built in HTC applications for Facebook nor Twitter (aka peep). While the internal viewer can be dismissed in favor of a real 'app', the selection is limited to bout 3-6 apps none of which are the built in parts of HTC's rom. (Of course if you're not using HTC roms then this isn't problem
Overall it's a great app, and the best out there I've seen, don't get me wrong.. but Friendstream still has the edge in actual functionality for basic use. Sure, No themes, lack of customization hurt, but when it comes down to using the product for what it's intended for (Keeping up with posts/photos from your friends) it has a few issues IMO.

Overall it seems "ok" but lacking in some ways as well. You can't post directly from the widget, which is a huge strike against it. I want the widget so I don't have to clutter my homescreens with redundant apps.

I'm using the scrollable widget currently, and like I said, it's neat to watch updates, but it's a killer that I don't see an obvious way to post anything to FB/Twitter through the widget, instead I'm forced to use the app.
It just feels "clunky" for lack of a better term.
I will say that the widgets can be set up to look better, it just seems that some of the skins are definitely not ones any OCD person would want to use.

It's Launcher Pro. I'm using the Froyo wide dock (in settings) and just setting up normal apps and using the Launcher Pro icons for them.

Erm. You just click that little star, and select "update status." You never have to open the official apps. You can also click that little arrow and select "open Facebook" so you don't ever need an icon on the screen in the first place.

Well crap, it looks as though I'd always been fat-fingering the arrow and only saw the "open Facebook" link in there.
I recant my previous statements and accept that this is a damn fine alternative to Friendstream. (after a little getting used to)
The only issue that I have with Pure Messenger is this: When a FB contact posts something on someones' wall it doesn't show who the other person is, even if the other person is one of your contacts it doesn't show.
Got socialite running on newest cyanogen nightly. Its pretty nice really, I actually like it better than friend stream.
Hey all,
Does anyone know of an app that achieves the display of recently used apps in the notification dropdown area?
Essentially, performing the same function that a long press on the home button does, but obviously eliminating the need to press a button.
I've been looking for something like this for a good while, and was pleasantly surprised to see HTC had included this very function in their latest version of Sense.... when I went to the HTC London meet last week .
Unfortunately, the HTC guys demoing informed me there is currently no way to obtain this feature for current handsets.
To see what I am referring to, see the video below...
46sec <---> 51 sec
Is there an app that exists for this?
Thanks in advance,

I think that's discussed in another thread - I remember reading its not a 'proper' power down, that allows for such a quick start up.
Anyway, back on topic...
Actually I have been looking for something similar... My wife has a mytouch slide... And when you pull down notification tray it has recent 4 now I haven't tried scrolling sideways like that guy did... But that shows that it is possible cause the slide shows 4 recent...
Just have to find someone to port that I guess
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Rather than a port, which sounds like more effort, I thought an app to enable this functionality may exist.
It seems not?
its going to need a port i think, i would hope for a slightly modified version that would allow us to pin apps to it or even widgets a la galaxy s.
If you hold down the home button for a couple seconds you'll get a list of the eight last used apps.
smart bar does this an more. recent apps in drop down and/or favs and/or you can choose a certain app and/or many many more options, i cant remember. you have option to enable all or only recent apps via settings and checking off the check boxs.
i use on my a81e tablet and it works well. my long press of home button is buggy due to fw so this come in handy very much

Does smartbar have a big footprint?
Would really love an app that does 'just' this.

Hi there,
I was very impressed of the (original) Hub Layout from this Thread.
But after installing a new ROM I was depressed to redo the whole process over and over with every full wipe again.
Therefore the idea was born to implement the whole idea in ONE Widget and not so many single Widgets. (Note that my implementation is based on the layout done with Launcher actions and Minimalistic Text Widget.)
I started to develop and presented it already in a german android board but now time has come to show you my work.
Hubs Widget 0.5
Current Features:
One configurable widget for all hubs
Horizontal Widget
Global configuration for colors, text etc.
Configurable number of hubs
Direct click for goto page for Nova Launcher jumpto action (no overlapping of widgets anymore!)
At the moment a fixed proportion active/inactive hub of 3/2 (good to know when using the overlap approach)
Issues:
Widget size not properly defined (need some assistance eventually), but can be resized
Sometimes crashes when choosing number of hubs (under investigation)
you tell me...
Planned Features:
configurable fonts (tricky, size and color will come definately)
configurable active/inactive hub proportion
contact ADW and Apex devs to implement direct widget clicking for them too (if already possible via intent to go to a specific screen please let me know)
you tell me...
Download
Version 0.5
Version 0.4
Addon
Transparent Icon theme (for "goto screen" icons) for Apex Launcher
ApexTransparentActionsIconPack1.0
(ADW in progress, help is welcome)
Your feedback and questions are welcome. I will definately work on this in the future until I am satisfied but I cannot tell you how fast the future releases will come.
Regards
David

Great idea! I hope this is still being developed, it would save a lot of people a lot of time not having to redo their hubs every time they wipe

Oh wow, finally some feedback. I was planning to release it in the market, but in the last weeks I had no time to develop.
At the moment I have a version on my tablet that does everything I want therefore I will only look into more features if there is spare time or some request. I will build the actual version an update this thread in a few minutes, so you can try the new version if you want (it has direct support for Nova Launcher without using some buttons underneath the widget as well as an horizontal version) edit: ok just saw I published the nova version already here. so just horizontal widget in the new version. But if you have any other request I can eventually do it for you.
Thank you for your feedback!
oh my god, always miss this.i really liked the hubs on my previous tablets, but after honeycomb days i stopped use them due to the loss on rom flash..and i flash roms so often that i decided to not do hubs anymore.
Now it seems you did a great job,i want to try this tomorrow and sure i'll post here my impression.thanks for this,a very good idea\potential
Apex support would be my main request atm, but I am guessing that is more in their hands than yours? Would rather not have to use Nova since I bought and set up Apex exactly how I like.
I notice horizontal support was added to the OP since I tried out 0.4 last night, that was my only other request! Don't have my tablet on me atm but other than the resizing issue this seems pretty well ideal for release.
You should definitely spread the word on the individual forums for each tablet because I only came across this thread through google.

Yes the Apex thing is more on their side. I will look into it again and check if it works in the current version or ask them to integrate a possibility like nova did.
I thought it a bit odd to advertise my own app in so many threads about hubs.. But you are right, I should do it to spread the word.
you need to explain a little the use of this. I have Nova installed, but.. no idea how to use.
I just get a widget on the screen, I cannot click on any button (nothing happens)
EDIT: Got it! just being stupid and not reading the initial thread.
EDIT2: I think there is an error: I have set up 5 or 7 screens, and the second button takes me to the third, the third to the forth and so on....
EDIT3: I actually works with 5. So I have no idea if the problem is hubs widget or multiple live screen wallpaper or either the launcher. Maybe somebody else can investigate (I am using Nova, as I mentioned).

Will look into it at the weekend (no time today, sorry). Should be an error on my side. I tested only with 5.
there is one more thing. at the moment, you can practically have one widget. I mean, if I want one widget that shows something and the second to show something else, it is not possible (for example, in the Entertainment hub, from the entertainment 'box' there is another Hub widget, that has different names (categories)).
Hi,
I could solve the problem with more than 5 screens when temporarily assigning a different screennumber to each hub that links to the wrong screen. But i had not the time to fix it in the code.
The other thing, yes actually all widgets have the same layout. I should possibly allow hub groups or something. I will work on it for future versions.

Hey Guys,
I've got good and bad news.
Bad news is, ther won't be an update for some time now. Good news is, I have some great ideas that I want to implement which will offer a lot more flexibility in the look of the widgets. However I have to almost completely rewrite the code to make it work this way. I don't know how long it will take and how my time for this will be in the future. But there will be some great updates in the future.
Thanks

All credit goes to Droid-Eye here for this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40021984&postcount=6 !!:good:
Anyone who was hoping to be able to use the new launcher (such as myself) will be happy to know that you can! It appears that the option is there in the 4.2 OTA update, it is just hidden from the settings menu. I assume that Asus are probably still working on it and will release it in a future update.
The only modification I made to Droid-Eye's method was to simply use a setting shortcut widget rather than an entire launcher option such as ADW.
I used 'Secure Settings' from Google Play, which is free. Please bear in mind you also need an Ipack for an icon for your shortcut. Luckily Secure Settings has a handy link to download free ones from Google Play when you are setting up your shortcut.
I hope it helps anyone desperte to try out the new launcher style. It seems many people hate the new launcher, and I'll admit that I did myself the first time I saw it. However, it has grown on me and I'm going to give it a run to see if I like it over the old style. I can always change back...for the moment anyway.
Note: There is no need to be rooted or unlocked to do this. You can always change back to previous launcher by setting up another shortcut widget in the new style launcher. Your tablet will need to restart to make the change, that is normal.
Screenshots.
As Droid-Eye correctly pointed out, the home soft button doesn't line up with the app draw button. I haven't found any other bugs yet.

The instructions worked well for me. So far I keep looking for the buttons in the wrong place. But overall the tablet seems snappier with this launcher. I also do like that the notifications shows across the top so you can see a lot more of the text.

Good looking out
I didn't even think about giving this its own thread. Hopefully, more people will consider trying the new layout now instead of just sticking with the status quo. I know not everyone will prefer them but it's always better to have the choice (I mean, this is Android after all).
Thanks for the credit.

Thanks for the tip, but gmd gesture control seems to have stopped working for me after enabling stock 4.2 launcher.

Thanks, man. I've been playing around in the activities shortcuts since I first got my brand new (at the time) Moto Droid with 2.0.1(to give you a time frame). I've found all kinds of cool stuff that way and it's nice finding solutions that don't require root once in a while. I highly recommend combing through the system activities if only just to see if there's anything hiding, waiting for a later update. This is how I found Face Unlock before they were ready to give it to us, too (though it took some interesting hoop jumping to get it to actually work). Also how I found the stock android dialer so I could try it wwith different SIP clients (still a work in progress).
Anyway, dig through the activities. Guaranteed you'll find something to play with in there.

Maybe check the tf300 threads (since they're the only other ones with this ability) and see if anyone's found a workaround for it. If it's happening for them too and there isn't a fix, I'm sure GMD will want to know about it so it can be fixed before the rest of the tf700 and tf201 communities run into it. Either way, keep the shortcut handy and you can always toggle back whenever they update the app.

What setting shortcut did you use? I'm trying to use the Settings and am having difficulty in choosing the right option underneath it.

Not sure if you're using my method or Gudder's but here's a photo step-by-step of how I do it.

The setting is there, just the Secure Settings tool is less than intuitive. Keep looking around at the tool. I had to look at the sample picture in the second post several times before I figured out what it was showing. I'll post instructions later in the evening when I have time if no one else does.

After you have selected to create a widget using secure settings, pick an app, wait, and select settings. Next, you can click the .settings textfield. That will bring up a long list where you have to pick the .settings#launcherSwitchSettingsActivity. (Almost at the end of the list) Save.
Give the shortcut an appropriate name, pick an icon, and save the shortcut.
Just install Nova launcher.

Load an icon pack first...or you will have to do it again when you get to the pick an icon step.

Back of of Secure Settings and go to your Home screen. Go into the app drawer and tap the Widgets tab. Find the Secure Settings widget and long-press to add to your Home screen. Then, follow the rest of the directions.
Okay folks, hot off the presses. The visual walkthrough of Gudder's suggested Secure Settings method. Enjoy.
