[Q] ROM slots? - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't seem to find answers anywhere. Whoever asks about slots has a locked bootloader.
I have a bootloader unlocked Droid Maxx but I would prefer not to use TWRP so I can receive OTAs without needing to reflash stock recovery. So, I decided to alternatively use Safestrap and so far, it's running very well. Now, what I wanna know is if it's possible to open ROM slots on 4.4.4 and use them. Has Safestrap been revoked of altering /boot, though? I'd like to see if anyone else has tried this yet.

Do I need to unlock bootloader for TWRP?

Hello,
I'm trying to install TWRP on my wife's TFT300T. Its lagging and freezing bloat apps hasn't helped. It's rooted stock 4.2 with a locked boot.
I rooted it with motochopper, and tried installing the latest 4.2 (2.6) with the terminal method and it didn't seem to work. I get an error when trying to access the recovery menu. I tried using adb/sdk, but I don't see the usb option fro fastboot.
I have the latest unlock tool from asus, but I want to be sure I need to unlock the bootloader. I have everything backed up with titanium, but I'd like to get a recovery of the stock too if possible.
If someone could confirm I need to unlock the bootloader that'd be great. It hasn't specially said that I need to unlock the bootloader in any of the 5 or 6 topics I've read. Thanks!

To my knowledge and for a bit of backround the reason the tf300t needs to be unlocked to install twrp is any kernel package you flash needs to be cryptographically signed, the key for this has not and wont be released by Asus, meaning if you try flash twrp without being unlocked, the bootloader looks for a signature on said package but doesn't find one so its not accepted, unlocking the bootloader disables these checks so we can flash what we want.
Short answer
Yes you need to have an unlocked bootloader to flash unsigned kernels

[Q] Does unlocked bootloader mean I can root after fxz on 4..4?

I have a droid maxx with an unlocked bootloader (no not dev edition, I don't know how it happened but I'm definitely unlocked and running full TWRP as recovery). Does this mean that even on 4.4 I can fully wipe and/or restore the phone and reroot afterwards? If so, how? Because after an fxz, slapmymoto won't work I'm sure
Having an unlocked non-dev edition is quite a unique situation. I would guess that you could do anything that could be done with a dev edition, but I certainly don't know for sure. And I'm not sure anyone else would know for sure either except the person who unlocked it.
However even a locked phone can restore the factory image, so you should at least be able to avoid a bricking (but maybe lose the unlock in the process).
Good luck...

If your BL is truly unlocked, then yes, on 4.4 you could fully wipe and restore the phone and reroot.
Unlocked BL will let you flash TWRP again via fastboot, and then use that to flash SU.zip to root.

[Q] Droid Maxx 4.2.2 sunshine unlock, how to get to 4.4.4?

So i held out taking the otas for a while to avoid losing root and am still on 4.2.2 post camera update. I know, it's sad, but I have root so i haven't been dying to update.
However, i just saw that sunshine will unlock my bootloader, which I'm going to do. What I'm confused about though is once i unlock my bootloader, how do I get to 4.4.4? Can I just revert everything to stock and take all of the otas (and then flash twrp to get root)? I heard that something in one of the otas changed something with the bootloader, so i don't know if taking that would cause problems with an unlocked bootloader or make me lose my unlocked status. Either way, could i just flash a 4.4.4 image directly from 4.2.2? If so where do i get a stock image to flash? Thanks for any help!
Once you have successfully unlocked, make sure you are status 3 unlocked in fastboot.
Once confirmed, you can use the rsd lite, and use the stock firmware from:
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/
Next, flash twrp for the ghost from their website.
Lastly if you want root flash supersu.
So can I flash a different OS version from the site that you linked? Or is that just to return to stock in anticipation of flashing TWRP and using that to flash a later android version?
rule of thumb is you cannot downgrade, only upgrade or revert to the same version you are already on
This seemed like the easiest route to a rooted 4.4.4... Unlock bootloader via Sunshine, and proceed as instructed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-ultra/general/unlocked-boot-xt-1080-restore-4-4-4-pre-t2883131
Data remains intact, unlocked bootloader warning on boot logo fixed, and TWRP (or Philz) flashed as recovery. Super easy. Good times.
Deleted. Redundant post.

I'm in the same situation. I'm currently rooted on the post camera update and held off on the new ota's for a while. I want to do the sunshine unlock. My question is should I do the sunshine unlock, upgrade to the newest 4.4.4 then install twrp to root? This youtube.com/watch?v=_xVyJMtLDPgvideo gives pretty good instructions but I also want to take future OTA's. I understand you won't be able to unless you put the recovery back to stock.
Thanks in advanced

Yep true. Can't take OTAs with out stock recovery. But it is easy to flash Stock Recovery then back to TWRP after the OTA. Of course safest option is to flash stock fxz without wiping data before taking OTAs.
Personally have my own recovery and logo.bin script I keep for just this reason. Run RSDlite with the stock software take OTA (if no fxz yet for the OTA) then full bit and setup and finally flash the recovery and logo.bin I use.
Many ways of doing it just find its easier for me this way probably cause this is how I learned from trial and error is all. Probably an easier way though.

[Q] Related to stock recovery/ROM.

Hey guys. So I am running 4.4.4 right now on my XT1033. Waiting for 5.0 now. However, I wanna root my phone now but I have some questions related to the update that I wanna clear first.
1, I already have unlocked my boot loader, will that affect my phone in receiving the OTA update?
2, Can I root my phone without removing the stock recovery, since I won't be flashing ROMs now and I wouldn't need it.
3, If I can't root without removing the stock recovery, how can I go back to stock recovery?
4, In order to update, do I have to unroot and lock the boot loader again or is that not necessary?
That's all. Keep in mind that my main concern is that I want root along with, when the time comes, the OTA update installation without any problems.
I am new at this so please bear with me. Hoping for an early reply, thank you.
Anyone?

1. There's no problem with unlocked bootloader in order to receive the OTA.
2. There's a method to root without modifying recovery. Search for "root moto g modaco" on google, and choose "option 1, superboot". (Since I am a junior member I cannot submit links) :crying:
3. You can also change recovery using fastboot or Mototools, flash supersu.zip and then flash stock recovery again using mototools, which is prepared to flash cwm, twrp or stock recovery,
4. You don't need to re-lock bootloader in order to update
Anyway, I read that you can receive the OTA being root, but only if you have not modifyied system (i.e removing system apk's) nor modifying kernel.
Hope this was useful!

Thank you, that really helped. And yea, I won't be messing around with the system apps, just gonna install Xposed.
2 more questions though
1, Is it possible to flash the stock recovery from CWM?
2, I read somewhere that the stock recovery can be extracted from the ROM of your phone. Is that true? That means that I can make a backup of my current ROM and also have the stock recovery with me, right?
Once again, thanks!

A recovery can be flashed from recovery, but only if you have it on a flashable zip, if you have it on img format, you need to use mototools or fastboot from pc. This second option is more recommendable
Concerning second question, I think I don't understand you. Original recovery can be found at the original firmware, this means that if you flash the original stock firmware it comes with the stock recovery, but I am not sure that you will recover stock recovery restoring a previous backup. Sorry

Locked bootloader, using twrp, xposed, magisk ect

So I've been looking into this, it seems it's possible to use flashify which allows you to flash .img files if your bootloader is locked and you have root you can flash twrp this way. Flashify can also make backup of stock recovery and install it, the reason i'm interested in this is security, as unlocked bootloaders have lots of risks.
Another post i was reading a person suggested, different manufacturers have different ways they implement locked bootloaders so some phones recovery might be protected and can't flash twrp while locked others may differ, I'm not sure. I currently have a Samsung S7 Edge, some people suggested issues around possible hard bricks, suggesting it's more likely to happen with a locked bootloader, then others saying fastboot wouldn't be able to recovery the device if installing a rom failed.
Someone pointed this out about my OEM unlock not been able to enable it to recover, tho odin doesn't require that to be turned on to flash back the stock firmware from download mode so that should fix that. I want to know the risks involved if flashify flashing twrp, kernels and roms while bootloader is locked is likely to work fine, i have seen posts of people who have done it most the comments seem like they could be assumptions best guesses around this type of thing. I can't find much on it.
What i'm thinking is find an exploit to get root, while locked flash twrp with flashify use twrp to flash xposed maybe? then restore stock recovery after flashing all the things i need, so if i loose the phone bootloader is locked and they don't have clear access to twrp, i think magisk is impossible as that modifys the boot which is the locked bootloader i believe so don't know which things magisk or others will or won't work.
Appreciate all reply's.
Thanks.
