Phone heat - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello I have noticed with the new update my phone heats up a lot during normal use.
This never happened with the 4.4.2 nor the 4.4.3
Is this an issue that many have dealth with? And will Google address this as well?
by the way Im on stock

Heat is normal. If you feel as though it is abnormally hot you should download GSAM or another app which measures temp and post your results.

Could it just be warm weather? Even when idle, the phone can never be cooler than the ambient temperature around it.

Somewhat normal. Custom kernel's can help...

Its Normal, all high middle models of smartphones getting heat temp, if temp is to high CPU thermal throttling cut down actual frequency

Insane CPU temperatures

Hey guys,
I am calibrating my battery atm and as you may know you have to discharge your device fully to calibrate the battery properly. To speed up the process I decided to install a stresstest app to my phone and guess what: the phone gets insanely hot, I can't even hold it in my hand longer then 5-10 seconds. Kernel tuner displays me temperatures between 78 and 82°C.
But this overheating problem not only happens with the stresstest. When I start watching videos on youtube or start using my phone for maps it gets hot too (about 60-70°C). It starts to bug me.
What do you guys think I should do to fix this? I already thought about applying some thermal compound between the CPU and the metal shield around it. But I'm not quite sure if it's a good idea. I already have a new phone but I still need two phones because I have to travel between Germany and Switzerland all the time. And this issue starts to make my Sensation unusable.
Send from my flying Note 2
I would suggest an anker battery. It has a greater capacity and it keeps the battery very cool.

did you try different kernels?

Already using it and I'm talking about the CPU temperatures and not the battery's temperature.
And sure I did try different kernels. Even at stock kernel setting this thing gets hot as f***!
Send from my hovering Note 2
So I just decided to disassemble my Sensation and put some thermal compound on the processor chip. Now I'm not getting over 70°C at full load, 1,56GHz. Pretty good outcome. And under normal use it doesn't heat up over 45°C.
I really have to recommend you this method!

[Q] thercharger overheating issue and the phone heating issue

why isnt the company doing something about the overheating issue? is there any solution for this? Just bought my one plus one and this overheating issue is such a let down.
From what I can see the reason the charger "overheats" is because of the speed in which it charges the phone. A way to fix this is to root the phone and install an app that can slow down the amount of power the phone takes in during charging. Ofcourse this means longer charging times but it will help with the heat issue.
With regards to the phone, unlock the developer options and underclock the phone. Obvious advantage of longer battery life and less heat but with the trade off of performance. I would reccomend only underclocking it a little but as you will get lag because of the restricting of power to the CPU. Changing the cpu governer etc. to save battery will help with heat as they just slow down the ram and CPU.
My appologies if you have done all of these and are still experiencing these issue, i do know where you are coming from but they are trivial issues and depend on how you as the user do use the phone. Have a browse around forums etc. to find tips on slowing things down a little and things will cool down for your phone.
I hope i have helped even a little bit
How do you define overheating on the phone? What temperature?

No overheating here. What do you mean? The phone gets hot and turns off?

This phone is not known for overheating any more than any other phone that will heat up when driven to its max for example in heavy 3D gaming. There is a difference between heating up and overheating
First, run stock without any extra installed apps, and NO running apps or network connections or anything and see if it's overheating.
Do not use an aftermarket charger--they could be rated for different amps and overheat or damage themselves or the battery.
Phone brand new?--simple--ask OnePlus to replace it.
Phone used?--probably been abused--get your money back and get another one.

This. Far too many people mistake a device heating up for a device overheating. All phones heat up, they have no active cooling. If the phone was actually overheating the thermal cutoff would kick in and the phone would shut down.

No overheating issue here, you may want to try different - weaker charger like stock Samsung or Sony one with output current ~700mA-1A and see how it performs.

CPU Temperature

I’m looking for the CPU temp in Galaxy S7.
Anybody know what are the values in green and red box in the pic attached signify?
This pic is from AIDA64/CPUZ
The red must be CPU cores, or at least related to that. Have no idea about the green one.

Wherever I see in the forums people only talk about the value in green box and they think that device is relatively cooler even under heavy load. But gotta say man the device heats up worse than my G4 even in minor load when referring to the values in the red box as you said. I wanna know is there something up with my device alone. What does you CPU Temp. reading after about 15 mins of heavy game session like with 'NFS No Limits' in your device in AIDA64? PLease post a screenshot
I don't play games on the phone. I tried a few just to make sure the phone is OK when gaming but in 5 minutes I got bored.
My phone gets hot, 75 Celsius when updating several apps, or right after an OTA.
I think this is normal, as I changed the first phone ( display issue ) and both reached the same temperatures in similar situations.
Edit
Also have a g4, that one gets hot more often than the s7.

Oh! Thanks for the reply. This is the first time using glass/metal phone, maybe that's why I'm very sensitive to this problem. Is that a S7(flat)? Never had seen anything above 60C.
Yes, simple s7, not edge.
One time got very hot in my pocket, for no apparent reason.
But in battery stats I noticed that Google services percentages increased from 6 to 16, in about 20 minutes. This happens also on g4, about once or twice a week. It lasts from 10 minutes to a half hour, or I restart the phone and no more issues for a while.
It's hard to catch the s7 above 70 Celsius, I guess the cooling system does it's job really fast. We need an app to monitor and record temperature changes in the background. The only one I know about is CPU temp, but is not showing real CPU temperatures, it's fake.

Got the same situation (temp around 65-70 degrees) especially when updating apps by play store. Its getting hot on the back near the camera. But when updating is done temperatures are very fast dropping to 30-40 degrees. I think it's normal for this kind of device, made from glass and metal. Would be greatful for more observations from you guys. Cheers.

Yeah, Most app in the place store aren't able to read the actual temperature from the S7. Maximum I've seen with those are 38C in ~20 min session of gaming. As I said haven't seen S7 anywhere near 70C but near 61C in AIDA64 but after ~20 min session of gaming. It does take about 5 mins to completely cool down. Don't know it's normal. Is it!?

As you can see from all the below linked videos, the temperature never crosses 40C in any testing under heavy load. But how can we get 60C, 70C and all. They are even saying device isn't much hot. How is that even posssible?

I have no idea what and how they tested, the fact is that mine got very hot a few times. I only check temps when I feel the phone hot, and that was only when updating some apps, right after the OTA restart.
The temps from a gun are going to be lower than the core sensor reading. Always.
Is this gun any good for external testing ? I almost bought it

Seems like a local item. May not give you accurate readings but it's up to you. If you want a good one try Amazon.

Here are something based on my recent tests and findings,
The problem is when the device is under heavy load(NFS No Limits game). therm_zoneX values goes upto 61C, which I don't care if the device is still not much hot to hold in hand but it isn't. Compared to my LG G4 it gets hot soon for the same amount of load based on my tests. And makes me unpleasant of the fact that the I can't enjoy the amazing performance of gaming in this phone not even longer when compared to the HTC & LG phones I had. Even simple tasks like switching between Whatsapp and Tapatalk in the background for almost 5 min made the device unusually warm while there isn't anything else heavy running in the background. All these is considering the fact that my room temperature isn't very hot. What is your opinion?
I think the below attached images(4) will help you understand it better on the temp. variations on various tasks and where do I feel it warm/hot. I strongly believe it's unusual based on my experience in previous 5 years with various devices. Do you observe something similar. Please have a look.
PS: The NFS No Limits temp. readings were similar to someone who posted in the different thread.
Is 34°C on average/light use good?
36-37°C when updating apps and using the phone at the same time

Overheating

My opo overheats without any heavy usage, I don't play any games.
I was on CM13, Darkobas rom and now Candysix rom but it still overheats what can I do?
Hi,
Have you tried a clean fastboot flash ?
Or can you upload some screenshots from an app like "CPU temperature" to see how is your overheating ?

Why you say that is over heating? Post some as about CPU and battery temp
This after ~15 mins of easy usage (battery temp. on status bar)
i don't this that these tempreture (48) is high...
So does anything happen when it starts to over heat?
Over heating to me would be 60s+ that's normally when the back of the phone is feeling very warm.
After I install a new rom, start up is rebuilding the cache and I've got it charging that's the only time I notice a hot back. Or if the GPS and 3g might be doing something strange.
If your phone is slowing down then look into it. If it seems fine but you just think the numbers are high then I wouldn't worry to much.
Where do you live? Is there a lot of direct hot sunlight?
Do you have loads of apps installed that might be misbehaving?
Or pick a rom that is slightly underclocked. Running it at max speed does make it warmer. Sultans kernel normally runs nice and cool. Think darkobas also uses it.

That temperature is completely normal during use. If it was 80c then you can claim overheating, which it clearly isn't.

Phone heating on all ROMs

OK, I ran into this issue about 5 days ago. No matter what ROM I install, my phone constantly heats up within 15-20 mins of casual usage. I don't even play games on my phone. I tried N ROMs and MM ROMs too, no matter what ROM I install, phone just heats up. I'm attaching a screenshot from CPU-Z app (which I used to monitor the temperature). Are those readings OK, or is there something wrong with my phone?
My phone's temperatures are usually similar to yours and I thought this was normal. In case it's not I'd like to see a solution to this as well.
Btw, do you have any custom kernels? Agni made my phone way too hot..

I don't really go for custom kernels unless I'm testing one. I stick to the kernel that comes with the ROM.

I have checked. They are mostly around 800 MHz mark. And 45% of the time in deep sleep or 400 MHz.
Also I want to whether surrounding temperature can affect the values? Right now the temperature at my home city is averaging around 34-35°C. Would that be the cause?

Not to hijack the thread but I have experienced all the cores being on max. frequency. I noticed this when my phone started warming up even being idle.
I saw this behavior for a few times in RR with both Optimus and Firekernel (Optimus had optimus set as its governor and Firekernel had darkness), however never encountered it in Ultradevs (with both chill and darkness).
This was a couple of months ago, and it hasn't happened again yet. However I am not sure if this was related to kernel because sometimes force stopping random applications such as greenify or nova launcher made the frequency scale down back to 400 (efficiency profile). Unfortunately I didn't get a hold on what was causing this, but I suspect some background user application was the culprit.

I also faced this issue first time when I flashed RR 5.8.2, no custom kernel used. And now its following on every ROM I install. I even tried custom kernels, different gapps packages but none seem to work. The phone heats up while charging and while doing simple things like using WhatsApp, sending emails, browsing through XDA. Also kernel adiutor is showing that GPU temperature is always above 43°C.

Did you restore apps through some backup program such as Titanium backup? In my case, I used to use it and it might be the reason the problem was popping up everywhere.
If not, and if the phone still heats up even in clean state (after a fresh custom/stock rom install), then maybe some hardware issue could be the reason.
My Cpu-z reports battery being at 37° discharging and the sensor0 to sensor5 show 45-51°c although the phone feels way cooler than that.

yeah, thinking you may have to flash stock, not restore it via twrp. I know it's a pain but it would give you a good reference point.
Well I can't flash stock ROM for the next 2 days. So let me ask this : Is a temperature of 37-42°C for battery and CPU harmful for the phone? Or I shouldn't worry about it?
107F? I shouldn't think so...
"Right now the temperature at my home city is averaging around 34-35°C. Would that be the cause? " It wouldn't help...
I am 26 ambient and my phone temps run 36-36 or so.
Ambient temp does play a factor. If the phone is Almost as hot as the ambient it's hard to transfer the phone heat to the ambient surrounding.
My freqs and temps in attachment. I use aosp-caf with prepackaged kernel(ud i think) with some custom settings.
Ambient temp is around 20 C inside and 10 C outside

Thanks a lot. Even when my phone was not heating up, the CPU and battery never got cooler 31°C. And GPU was around 38°C. And even after intensive use, CPU never got hotter than 37°C.
Now my phone's CPU and battery are around 35°C mark and GPU around 43°C. And during use CPU reaches 43°C mark and GPU about 52°C. Can these temperatures cause any harm to the device?

I have not faced any issues since I am using Nano Gapps. Previousely I used Mini gapps and that was causing the issue . Depend whar Mobile you use 1GB RAM or 2GB RAM. Also it is better to clear cache after every install
Also I use following settings to make suer it doe snot get hot.

Thanks for replying but its not the issue of any ROM. I flashed stock and the issue still persisted. So I literally contacted everyone I know of who owns an unrooted osprey in my city and asked them about this.
Turns out everyone's phone is getting hotter a lot faster than before. Even went into a Moto Service Centre, they said its fine for the phone to heat up in such temperatures.
The issue is ambient heat. As you might have seen in my previous post, I mentioned that the temperature in my city is averaging around 35-36°C (Today it reached 40°C), the phone just doesn't cool down enough after using it. So when I started to use it again, it heated up.
Thanks everyone for replying.
