I have seen a million different MHL adapters for the S5.
I do like the sleekness of the Samsung OEM MHL adapter. However, its quite a drag to have to have an additional HDMI cable to use it. I saw a SlimPort HDMI adapter on eBay and was wondering if that would work with our S5s.
I see a lot of MHL HDMI adapters on eBay and some/most look crappy and require additional power to function where the OEM does not.
What are you guys using?

I tried my partners Samsung cable for s4 and it doesn't work on my s5. Not sure if its a different method or the fact its custom ROM. Do I need a s5 specific adaptor?

I have been using one made by HTC (cost about $20) for a couple of years on many different phones with no problems. Just have to make sure it has power and that the input on tv is set first.

It worked on hers so it was setup fine. Must be my ROM. Sorry for the thread hijack.
Normally I find unless the target device (app, tv etc) supports MHL then you need to supply additional power to get mhl working. Also there are different versions of MHL meaning some cables wont work with some devices.

I just received this one and it works flawlessly. I love that I can use it without having the power connected too.
A must buy for S5 owners

I can't seem to get video to play on TV with HDMI from the S3.
I bought an aftermarket HDMI on eBay and I plug it in while video playing and nothing happens.
Do I need a Samsung specific cable? Or any tips?
Thanks

So, I also had a similar issue recently. I bought one by Skiva that came up in an S3 search. Turns out, works for Galaxy S, S2, but not S3. The S3 uses a different interface for MHL than the previous S models.
I eventually caved and dropped $30 on a Samsung S3 -> HDMI adapter. Adapters to make it function with legacy MHL interfaces are available, I believe. Just make sure they claim (and are reputable about it) working with the S3.
EDIT: Also, if your tv's HDMI interface isn't "HDCP Compatible" (recent TV's use a handshaking protocol for basically DRM) it will either receive no signal or a black screen, and the device will claim it is outputting video normally.
Which adapter did you buy?
As sworld pointed out, the S3 uses a different MHL setup than older phones. It uses an 11-pin connector, where the standard 5 USB pins remain for USB, but deeper inside the S3's connector are 6 more pins to be used with MHL.
If the adapter you bought only has 5 pins then you'll need to buy an 11-pin to 5-pin adapter. Then your MHL adapter will work.
I noticed the S5 does not use standard HDMI cable...Is any available that will work with the phone?
This cable worked well for me - http://http://amzn.com/B00GE51T9Q
For some reason it received a bunch of negative ratings but I am satisfied with it. Its also super cheap but I'll warn you ahead of time, it takes weeks to receive since its coming from China.
Link doesnt work...?
Sorry about that. Try this
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GE51T9Q/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
or just search Amazon for "niceeshop White 1080P Micro USB MHL To HDMI HDTV Adapter AV TV Video Cable For Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300/ S4 i9500/HTC"
Do you need any sort of app to get the s5 to mirror to a tv? I bought this cable but I cant get it to work...http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DUCB65I/ref=ox_ya_os_product_refresh_T1#customerReviews
Nvm got it working! Is there any way to change the resolution?
Resolution is automatically handled, no custom options. Your best control will be to choose the TV's display options and see which scales better.
Hdmi
I just bought a chromecast to get a workaround the hdmi cheap as chips these days
I didn't know that s5 needs a special hdmi cable.. I bought one that doesnt work.. Is there anyone i can do? What is the difference from the standard? Perhaps solder a cable or something?

You got a regular HDMI to HDMI? You need to purchase a micro USB to HDMI MHL adaptor. You will plug the adaptor into the phone and HDMI cable into the adaptor and television.

No. I got a microusb to hdmi adaptor but doesn't work.. When i connect s5 with tv, nothing happens.
I read above that s5 needs a special cable and not the regular (which i 99.9% have..)
So is there any way to make it work?
What special and different the cable that Samsung do?
Thanks,

Does it say it an MHL adaptor? I am looking at other forums and seeing people say that they are unable to get HDMI output to work with 4.4.4, what ROM are you using?

Yes it write mhl. Rom is 4.4 2 alliance rom.
Here is the cable:
http://www.e-shop.gr/startech-passive-micro-usb-to-hdmi-mhl-cable-3m-black-p-PER.813877
This is a photo of the cable:
Because it is a passive MHL cable, your display must be MHL enabled. The S5 is, so you need to look for your television model on this website
http://www.mhlconsortium.org/productlist/
If it isn't on the list, you need a different cable (or different TV which is much more expensive. )

Funny, I actually have. I work in a computer repair/data recovery shop and we have a phone in with a broken screen/lcd. Long story short is that the device did not work with the phone we got it for, nor my phone (Galaxy S5), and I know my MHL works on my phone but we needed KB/Mouse support as well.
It may have been a bunk device and we haven't requested a replacement yet, so If you try it out let me know if yours works, and when we get our replacement i'll let you know.
actually the seller replied to me and says that this cannot do hdmi and otg at the same time but apparently this dock does : http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=ite...obalID=EBAY-US&ssPageName=ADME:X:ACME:US:1123
but this dock is not compatible with galaxy s5 ... i wonder why

Unfortunately I don't think so, I used this:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Lindy-73391-...6?pt=DE_Computer_Sonstige&hash=item462bc81bb0
with a s4, and it worked prperly, but when connected to s5 it doesn't even turns on. I think it is because s5 doesn't have a docking mode, in fact if you go in Settings-->accessories, there is only an option for sound on hdmi, while in s4 there were more (and one was for the docking mode)
I couldn't find anything that worked reliably and consistently. So I use the MHL for HDMI output and use a Bluetooth Keyboard and mouse...

This is a good solution, but I'm wondering why, since 11 pin connectors usually can handle hdmi and usb otg on the same time, why old dock stations for 11 pin device don't work?
using micro 3.0 for MHL and OTG
i have a SM-G900P and if i make a OTG and MLH cable through usb 3.0 do you think i could charge and use HDMI and 2 usb for keyboard and mouse. My goal is to make my phone like a mini computer on the go for my roms and movies
Possibly use the USB 3.0 Micro-b connection?
All my googling on this matter with the S5 seems to lead to one inevitable conclusion, the S5 won't allow for simultaneous MHL and OTG use, because the S5 uses the 5pin connector and not the 11pin connector (as the S4 seemed to). What I don't understand is, isn't the S5 using USB 3.0 instead of the USB 2.0 as on the S4? How could the S5 allow for faster data transfer rates and yet not be able to transfer more types of data at once?
Isn't there a way to utilize the entire USB 3.0 micro-b format (which apparently has 10 pins, 5 for backwards compatibility with USB 2.0 (except 5pin, and not 11pin), and 5 extra for USB 3.0 speeds) to use MHL and OTG and charging simultaneously?

I'm having an issue with MHL adapter on my S5, When I connect my MHL adapter to my S5, the audio on my TV seems delayed, but when I tried it on my S3, the audio is perfectly fine. Is this something to do with S5 having 5 pin only wherein S3 having 11pin?
I saw a 5 pin to 11 pin converter on Amazon, will this solve this issue? And possibly the issue of not being able to use MHL/HDMI and USB at the same time?
buy chrome cast you can screen mirror or use almost any app directly to the tv when it comes to videos and such theres a little allshare
button at the top of like the video player, you tube etc.
also a smart tv does the same thing only better (all the above scenarios will only work with a connected network)
what is wrong with the image quality?
Chromecast works for me at home or anywhere it has standard wifi, but is too painful in most hotels that use a web user login. Without net access it was almost useless last time I tried. I could pair with it, but it wouldn't stream local files from my device. Most places I've stayed in the last few years have an active HDMI port on their tv, so the MHL HDMI and OTG with USB wireless mouse on an S3 worked for me, even though I couldn't charge at the same time. Haven't been able to make that work so far with anything I've tried on the S5.
Still no luck with S5 docking (MHL+OTG)
Hello!
I've been using this adapter for a while with a Samsung Galaxy S4:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/MHL-...or-Samsung-Galaxy-S3-S4-Note/32461052976.html
Charging, HDMI connection and USB keyboard + mouse works very nice.
Unfortunately no luck with S5. Not even charging works. I read S5 doesn't use 11-pin USB (because of the USB 3.0 plug, etc...). If that's true, then not even installing a custom ROM would make the docking work.
According to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57336973&postcount=4, "the G800F is capable of USB OTG. It simply is not enabled in the stock firmware." I know this is about a S5 Mini, but wouldn't it be the same for the S5?
Do Micro USB to USB/HDMI adapters exist? Basically, an OTG cable with an HDMI split, as well. Please recommend a good one if you know of one that works.
I don't know of any myself because I haven't used them, but I believe they do exist. I remember reading about them before. though you'd need your device to support it.
EDIT
I looked it up, and it's not exactly HDMI output (which some devices do have), but they do have adapters for micro USB to HDMI - look up MHL
I asked that in general troubleshooting.
Note4 has a mhl 3.0 allowing it to output 4k resolution to 4k hdtvs. For now just content taken with it like photos and recorded video.
Ok, ive tested a generic mhl 2.0 and it didn't work (the mhl drive needs power to abs from the note4 so you have to have the 5pin to 11 pin adaptor on top of the mhl drive) but!
An oem samsung one (usually white) works out of the box. Retail 40 dollars on samaungs w3bsire. Amazon i think 35 dollars. Again the this on3 only works with the power cord to the drive.
But!! If you are lucky to have a samsung smart dock from the note2 it works for the note4. (When the note4 came out first staples was clearing out the shelves of the note2 docks users reported as a working wired dock to hdmi screen mirroring.)
Woreless? Chromecast...most miracast devices. And the new roku stick hdmi version work

Hello guys! I'm willing to buy micro hdmi to hdmi cable, something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Fosmon-High-Speed-Micro-HDMI-HDMI-Cable/dp/B003UH0Z9Q

Thanks! :good:

No it will not work.. Pure XL does not have a micro HDMI port, so no where to hook it into-
"High-speed Micro HDMI to HDMI cable, A to D type; please note, this is not an MHL cable"
this cable does NOT have usb > HDMI functionality...
you need a MHL cable for that
try something like this:
http://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=8675
(theres numerous ones on amazon, but they all have specific phones listed, mainly samsungs, but MHL is a standard that a lot of phones use...)
I have a similar one that I couldn't get it to work or even recognized on the PURE, but my HTC One m7 sees it but doesnt consistently work (it recognizes then doesn't.. bouncing between the two)
let me know how it works out
Well that seems obvious finally... I didn't saw that it was a micro HDMI and not a micro USB...
