HDMI and the S3 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I can't seem to get video to play on TV with HDMI from the S3.
I bought an aftermarket HDMI on eBay and I plug it in while video playing and nothing happens.
Do I need a Samsung specific cable? Or any tips?
Thanks

So, I also had a similar issue recently. I bought one by Skiva that came up in an S3 search. Turns out, works for Galaxy S, S2, but not S3. The S3 uses a different interface for MHL than the previous S models.
I eventually caved and dropped $30 on a Samsung S3 -> HDMI adapter. Adapters to make it function with legacy MHL interfaces are available, I believe. Just make sure they claim (and are reputable about it) working with the S3.
EDIT: Also, if your tv's HDMI interface isn't "HDCP Compatible" (recent TV's use a handshaking protocol for basically DRM) it will either receive no signal or a black screen, and the device will claim it is outputting video normally.

Which adapter did you buy?
As sworld pointed out, the S3 uses a different MHL setup than older phones. It uses an 11-pin connector, where the standard 5 USB pins remain for USB, but deeper inside the S3's connector are 6 more pins to be used with MHL.
If the adapter you bought only has 5 pins then you'll need to buy an 11-pin to 5-pin adapter. Then your MHL adapter will work.

[Q] MHL Adapter not working on Samung Galaxy Note N7000

Hello All,
Search quite a few threads on xda as well as internet but unfortunately nobody have been facing issue similar to mine.
Okay, let me put it in brief. I bought an original samsung mhl adapter for galaxy s2 from ebay which presumable works well with samsung galaxy note too (haven't seen any MHL Adapter specifically for galaxy note) as heard on forums and web. It did not work. So, i got back to the vendor and he replaced it to me with another MHL Adapter. That too did not work. I got a refund as the vendor was good.
I still somehow wanted the MHL to work so went to a different vendor, known for good products (i.e. flipkart) and purchased another MHL adapter after confirming with the executives that yes it would work with galaxy note. It too isnt working.
In both the cases, the phone gets charged but there are no such notifications (notifications such as USB Host Cable Connected, or Keyboard Connected or MHL Connected etc). I have a working HDMI 1.4 cable (tested and verified), and yes, i am aware that external power is required to the MHL Adapter. .
Now, every other functionality on my phone is working well, like USB Host Mode, bluetooth/usb keyboards and bluetooth/usb mouse, data sync via usb etc etc, its only the MHL adapter which is giving me an issue constantly. Can the micro usb port on my Note be faulty ? I dont think as every other options are working fine.
I have tried all the three MHL Adapters (2 from the 1st vendor and 1 from the second) after i upgraded my phone to ICS. Are any other users facing the same issue ?
Any help is highly appreciated.
Apparently, there are problems with MHL support on ICS.

MHL adapter regarding....
hi guys,
i am also facing the same problem with MHL adapter. i tried to connect my galaxy note n7000 to sony bravia 3d tv via MHL but failed to do so. whenever i connect MHL to HDMI Cable to tv and to phone nothing happened and not even my phone or tv show any sign of connection or any notification regarding that. my phone not even show the battery charging sign. i also used 3d HDMI cable for the connection but nothing came out.... and when the vender (from whom i purchased the MHL) gave me the demo the same MHL was working fine with his HDMI cable and tv but the cable and tv he used were not 3D whereas i have a 3D tv. i dont understand why i am not able to connect the MHL adapter using 3D HDMI cable to my Sony Bravia 40HX750 3D tv with my Galaxy Note n7000. still struggling with that.... any reply in this regard will be appreciated.... thanx.

[Q] RCA and HDMI cable question

I'm eyeballing either TV Video AV Cable for Samsung Galaxy Tab Note 10.1 or Samsung Galaxy TabTM HDTV Adapter for my Galaxy Note 10.1
My biggest concern is compatibility.
I checked on samsungs own site for the compatibility between the HDMI cable and the Note but it came up saying "NO" but I don't know if that's because they haven't tested it yet or it really is a NO. As for the RCA one, I'm aware I'll lose the awesome video output and will be watching it in SD, that's ok, the videos I have saved on it are from DVD so it won't get better than 720, what I'm more concerned about is "will it work"
anyone tested either of these and know the answer?
BTW: the Note is completely stock at this point

I bought the HDMI adapter, I believe it is the same one you linked to on amazon, official samsung adapter, but at frys electronics ( I had a $100 giftcard there from the sale hey had on the note 10.1). It has nice picture and audio as should be expected, and it is nice with apps like youtube with the user interface.
The only issue I found with it so far, and might be a deal breaker, is you need to have your charger plugged into the adapter at the same time for it to work. There is a slot to plug into right next to the input on the device. It seems like a nice feature at first so you can charge your device while watching netflix or whatever on your regular tv. BUT you NEED to have it plugged in in order for it to work, and I wanted to remove several cables and stuff. I got this adapter so I wouldn't have to worry about moving my laptop from my office to my living or bedroom to watch some tv, but it will be the same hassle it seems like with this.
I am considering returning it and going a different route that will better suite my needs of less wires.
Don't know about the RCA thing, but it seems like it might be a good route if it works.

[Q] Galaxy S3 Samsung MHL 11pin cable not stabile

Alright, I have searched and searched for a solution to this issue.
What started this all off is that I purchased a Pioneer AppRadio 2 that I wanted to connect my Verizon Galaxy S3 too. I plugged everything in correctly got a connection from the appradio app and with a nice crystal clear display. Then in 7 seconds it all went down hill from there. So after a lot of troubleshooting here is essentially what it does. Once plugged in after a few seconds the display comes up and if I have music going it starts playing, then in 7(est) seconds I lose signal dor a second and then it comes back for another 7 seconds, etc... I have tested a ton of things and still get the same results...
Devices: AppRadio2, Yamaha Reciever (This decodes HDMI before sending it on) and a Samsung DLP Television
HDMI Cables: Generic HDMI, High end Monoprice and a Mid Level Monoprice HDMI
USB: 3 different cables
Power Adapters: Car 1.0A and 2,0A; Home: 1.0A Verzon power adapter and attached to PC
Phones: I replaced my Galaxy S3 with another thinking it was the phone itself (Verizon warranty)
MHL Adapter: I purchased two Samsung MHL GS3 MHL adapters from amazon (two different vendors), EPL-3FHUBEG, (I had links in here but the damn forum won't let me leave em in).
I have been on the phone with Samsung for hours and verizon. The Samsung tier 2 support tech has opened a ticket with research or something and am currently waiting to be contacted in some way.
Has anyone else experienced similar? Any solutions?
Thank You...
At this point I can only charge my Samsung galaxy s3 with pieonerr android cable that I had installed at BestBuy they also installed my appradio 2. Not exactly sure what to do next

First off to really get the most out of the unit got should arlibitator in the play store it will blow your mind.
That being said there has been a lot of talk on the forums that the mhl adapter sold on amazon are in fact fakes. I can confirm this add I purchased one from amazon abs after having issues with 4g cutting out I got one directly from Samsung, that don't even feel the same. So your charging problem could be from using a bad mhl.
On a side note the pioneer charger only puts out about 500ma which isn't enough to charge the battery normally. Most ppl installed a 3.1v charger from amazon.
Charging works but everything else dont. Head unit dosent see phone when plugged in. Want to order the parts I need asap. Not sure what to order

MHL 3.0 HDTV Adapter

Anyone has use the mhl 3.0 hdtv adapter? It said that the power cable is not required? Anyone tested it? It also can send image to the tv at more resolution that 1080P.
Hey,
I don't know if this will help, but in my first week of owning the GNE I tried to connect it to my television using a mhl 1.0 adapter I got off of eBay. It needed the charging cable to power the adapter, but overall it didn't work. I read somewhere online, that a Samsung brand television is required, or maybe not? I have an Bose television, which is not that popular, but if someone on here can get it to work on a non-Samsung brand television using a mhl 3.0 adapter, let me know.
Thank you for your time and for reading.

I have an MHL 1.0 adapter (Samsung brand) that works fine with my Galaxy S3 and Note 10.1 (2014) tablet, but doesn't work with my Note Edge. Definitely something different between the two technologies.
I actually picked up an MHL cable form Amazon last week. I've used a few different brands, and they've always been unreliable - I'm including Samsung's here, which failed in less than a week (!) because of poor construction.
This one's worked pretty well for me so far! I've used it with my Note 10.1 as well as my Note Edge and my only real complaint is the shortness of the cable. You'll have to have a wall outlet pretty closeby or an extension cable in order to use this thing with either of the devices I mentioned. Or you can do what I did and just hook up one of those portable batteries you can get just about anywhere now.
I can't post links yet, but if you look up "Rankie MHL", youll find it.

I own samsung official mhl 3.0 cable. I connected my note 4 with a 4k philips tv and played some 4k samples from lg tv's. Philips TV reported the signal as 2k at info section.
P.S. I have not connected external power surce to mhl adapter
I just use a Belkin Miracast HDMI adapter... works great with the Edge.

Can't find a working MHL adapter for my Note 4 (T-Mobile)

I can't find a working MHL adapter for my T-Mobile Note 4. The problem: the 11-pin plug does not snap into the phone like the 5-pin plug does, so it does not stay in the phone. Even if I hold it in, the screen is not mirrored. I noticed that the 11-pin plugs are longer, and the two prongs that allow the plug to be snapped in are too far back.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/picture.php?albumid=14195&pictureid=57248
These are the two that I tried which didn't work:
BelindaSupports UHD 4K MHL CABLE MHL 3.0 to HDMI Adapter for Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (Amazon)
Aibocn MHL Kit Universal MHL Micro USB to HDMI Cable 6.5 Feet/2M 1080P HDTV Adapter for Samsung Galaxy S5 S4 S3 Note 3 (N5100 N9000 N9006) Note 8.0 HTC LG and More MHL-enabled Phones (Amazon)
In both cases, the phone charger was plugged into the adapter, and I rebooted the phone while the adapter was held into the phone.
Can anyone recommend one? I would prefer not to buy the official Samsung adapter as those are expensive. Thanks!

I bought one online and has exact same problem. They suck. I ended up buying a better one at Best Buy. It worked good. Don't recall the brand though.
I bought a ScreenBeam Mini2. It works great. Connects in seconds through stock Smart View on MagMaNX ROM 2.0.1. Only complaints: Weak range -- phone has to be right by the dongle. Also, phone screen has to stay on for video (but can turn off for music), so I always feel like I'm overworking the display (and it can be a bit distracting if the phone's in sight). But I'm satisfied with it. After all, it works.
More than I can say for the Accell 10-Foot MHL Adapter. Supposed to work for N4, plugs in fine, lights up when powered, but won't mirror. Looks like another dud product. (Or maybe I need a pin adapter? Really wanted this one to work.)
I have had success with these MHL 11 pin to HDMI adapters on my Note 4 910V, and all samsung phones that support 11 pin MHL.
https://frys.com/product/8881832?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
If you don't have a frys near you, they will ship it to you. Since I have two in my area, I usually wait for a sale when they are around $7 and buy a few for friends and relatives.
I just use my note 3 dock which has the mhl built in and the extra usb ports so I can charge the spare battery at the same time
Thanks everyone for the info. I got my hands on a Note 3, and the adapter that I have fits perfectly, and snaps all the way in. On my note 4, the usb port is not deep enough to allow the adapter to snap in, so it won't work no matter what I try. So, it looks like my Note 4 is not able to use an 11-pin MHL adapter, even though the specs for the phone say it is compatible. I wonder if it is because it's a T-Mobile variant?
it's obvious that note 4 doesnt have 11pin micro USB port. For the note 4 you should get the 5 pin micro usb MHL jack.
