I looked up an article about a smartphone that runs on both windows mobile and andriod using a special bootloader called U-boot it is an open-source boot loader try getting this on the G1 then try to get windows mobile image or something on the g1 via this bootloader. the phone I am referencing this from is the Compulab exeda their article can be found here: http://i.gizmodo.com/5131507/compulab-exeda-a-stocky-phone-stuffed-full-of-features-and-oss
Use this bootloader then tell me how you will get windows mobile
wattt!!! so basically u saying hey i dnt know if this will work but kill your fone then tell me how it work out. Btw first the bootloader have to be ported to g1 hardware
ya that guy says here do this and let me know if it works . but if im reading this right a dual boot g1?
That's what it seems like. That could mean anything really... but it has an ethernet port! Can we say insta-router/modem? How odd and cool at the same time! But if it's truly a duel mode phone, WM on Android is just a tiny step away But then again... Since the phone itself is entirely different than the G1, how will it be ported? Just a bootloader isn't gonna do it. It will have to be modified completely. It's still better than trying to port from a TyTn or something else. U boot will have to support the G1's hardware or something extremely similar (a least a HTC phone). And the WM image could be gotten from anywhere but preferably from this phone, the exeda (may be the .nbf will leak sometime or it will get a downloadable update for WM).
LOL i meant dual boot as in the "linux" flavor for nokia i was thinking... sorry but as fast as android is advancing im ready to kiss WM goodbye. But sure people will either want to throw WM or possibly a dualboot on there g1's if it is possible
I've used u-boot on many different platforms... You guys have no idea what you're talking about. This isn't something you just "put" onto the G1... it would need to be written(ported) for the G1, bring up all the hardware, initialise RAM, etc... this would replace the SPL, not the OS, so you would also have to find a way to get u-boot to load wince (I've only used u-boot to boot linux, redboot is for wince).... this thread is like all the comments on the google apps store asking app developers to write flash for the browser...
I would love to get something like this, even wondered when they will come out with it. But I do think it will be something that will have to come on the phone, not as a 3rd party app. But I do hope HTC will bring out a hybrid like this. And a Ethernet port. Holy crap, I love that!!
i have a dream...
I have a dream that one day HTC will offer the drivers to the devices they sell.. that would make every developers live easier. If they released the drivers for all the hardware u could run any OS on the dream.
I would acctually pay for that

The problem is, HTC may or may not have the rights to release the code for those drivers, even if they wanted to. Many drivers come from hardware manufacturers (like Qualcomm, for example) and don't give clients like HTC the rights to distribute them except in binary form.
One day everything will be open-source. One day a carrier who advertises a phone as "open" will actually sell it as open, too.
I had my laptop dual boot with Slax and Win XP for about a week. I can't tell you how much I regret wasting the time to even set that up. Lets say you get the bootloader to work on the G1... Now tell me... what exactly are you going to use to control the capacitive touch screen and why? Can't we all just admit that Windows time is near its end and its only saving grace is to mimic what the open source communities are doing, or Apple if you want to refer to Windows 7... ick i say, ick.
True i am going to hijack this and wonder also why has no one looked into why we are only using 384mhz of the 528mhz that the processor can run at it was in another thread that no one commented on?

That's actually pretty slick. I wonder if a version will support tmo-usa's 3G band?
I consider buying this phone. But I don't want to before it's rooted. Thought we could discuss it here. Or is it delivered open?

Yesterday I was searching for the direct quote from Paul (modaco) regarding this; at least I think it was him who said this...
Basically, unless I made this up in my head, he (if it were him) stated that the oem unlock functionality built into the bootloader has been removed.
Of course this is all speculative until I can find that damn quote
I strongly doubt that this has the same oem unlock features as the Nexus. The OEM unlock is most likely only requested by Google, and I do not think that HTC will do the same thing. It would be awesome, no doubt about it, but hey, lets be realistic.
I guess we'll just have to wait until the device gets sent out to review.

Guess you're right. Hope there will be some kind of exploit we can use. Or a leaked RUU with eng SPL or anything.

I think (and hope) someone will manage to root it, unless it's delivered open. But at the moment we don't know.
Altoguh, I've heard that it's using the same radio and hboot as Nexus One. Therefore, they should be able to use the same ROMs.
hey it's almost 100% that it will be rooted! is there anything in the world of computers that is not hacked ??? if it's not like the same day of it's release like the nexus (which was even before its release) it will be rooted in some days!!!

I just hope that it's not that every good developer have bought Nexus One, and therefore doesn't bother trying to root the Desire.
i don't think so, as every enthusiast will try to have this phone. Also i see many "hackers" being involved in more than two or even three mobile phones very often in this forum so we hold our chance
This should prove to be interesting to watch unfold...
random thoughts...
-The usual suspects seem to be fully wrapped up in Nexus development. Hard not to be with such a fun device What does this mean for the desire? Not sure.
-oem unlock appears to not be present in the desire's rom. if the desire is built on the same everything else (with sense on top) as the nexus, which has not bee rooted any other way beyond oem unlock, I'm not sure how someone will circumvent the lockdown. Perhaps without oem unlock, people will be forced to get creative? *shrug*
-The desire's rom works on the nexus; to me this says one thing...there is little->no reason for anyone with an n1 to look into a desire as long as desire images keep leaking.
All random thoughts but it would seem that possibly the desire may wind up being a consumer product rather than a hobbyist product...only time will tell though
I hope it will be more then a consumer product. The reaseon I'm buying the desire is that it will be released in belgium the nexus one isn't.
Yeah, I'm intrigued about this too- ordered an HTC Desire earlier today for delivery beginning of April, but no idea if i'll be able to root it and stick a Nexus rom on it!
Will be keeping an eye on these threads, just about to pre-order the Desire.
Hi guys
preordered one too, coming from a Touch HD. Til now on the online shop I ordered its stated to arrive at the end of march. Hope they can hold this date. Cant wait to see this device beeing rooted

hmm, I really want a snapdragon+ phone with sense on t-mobile usa. or even just a snapdragon one that is for consumers.
It needs time, I think. Because it´s not to buy, I mean before the HTC Hero came out, do we know it has root? NO When it´s out it needs a little time, and we have root believe me.
sorry for my bad english
I have a few questions, i want to buy a htc desire but i come from winmo world so i don't understand everything...
If the phone doesn't get rooted...
-will it be still possible to install .apk directly on the phone ?
-will it be still possible to upgrade 'operators' roms to official or cooked roms ?

Nexus
I've got the Nexus One, and just wanted to point out a few things (from my perspective)
The Nexus one runs Desire / Sense - BUT flash in the camera is bad, and so is bluetooth. (I used to have a HTC Magic, running HTC Hero / Sense on it, never really worked as good as my friends Hero, so history repeats itself - even with my friend selling his Hero to buy a Desire
So there are a difference in the hardware
the Nexus was rooted very fast, but this is because Google intended the phone to be rooted, this is Google behavior, and clearly not HTC behavior.
I don't see why a developer finding a root method in the Nexus without using the google "practices" to root, would publish their findings for the Nexus, so there might be a couple of ways to root the Desire right when it comes out.
thats just my 2 cents. (For what they were worth)

But if the desire is rooted will it be possible for the custom/official roms ? are there custom "hardspl" who can be built like in windows mobile ? What are the requirements ?
(It scare the **** out of me to be stuck with an operator rom as you can see xD)
what are the chances that we will be able to dual boot these two? I was really in the mood to try out a windows phone 7 device but the only one available was the trophy and that phone was too small, and i was not going to switch a carrier just to get a new phone. i thought maybe it would be possible to dual boot them on the charge seeing how it is becoming possible on a few other devices now.
Or at least start of by being able to boot into two different roms for android without having to re-flash each one separately?
dont know if thats possible, doubt it though since WP7 isn't open source so developers just can't go grab code and just start with that.
however, if you want to try WP7, you can download the WP7 launcher. its called launcher 7 i believe
yeah i already have that and i like the way it looks it would be nice
if someone could make a windows look alike rom with that.
Hey guys,
I know there are plenty of people working on finding a method for root, it's difficult, not trying to ask when it's going to be or why it's taking so long. I'm just wondering if it will even be possible, given HTC doesn't ever unlock the phone themselves. I love the One X, just got it and I think it's great, but I know that I'm going to eventually want to install MIUI or CM, and since my phone has 2.2 there's basically no way to do that right now.
Reading through some of the dev/think tank threads, I've read a couple of comments alluding to the idea that it might be impossible unless HTC unlocks it, and that they might not. Seems contrary to what I've seen in the past, pretty much every phone I or my friends have had got cracked at some point. Still, if it's not going to be possible ever, I might want to return my phone and switch it out for the SGS3 or some other.
I tried to Google for unrootable android phones and couldn't find any. However the percentage of devices using ics is very small and the only ones that have root as far as I can tell all have unlocked bootloaders.
It's very difficult to remain positive but I'm trying.

Y'all are so impatient!
Like any security, it just takes enough careful effort and determination to defeat. As great as the One X is, I have no doubt there will be enough of both to get this done. :good:

I don't have the technical expertise to really say. But just from experience, I can say that HTC has been desperately trying to lock down their phones for over 2 years (maybe longer, that is justs when I jumped into the Android game) with some pretty sophisticated safeguards, and the phones have still been rooted, often very quickly. I don't think HTC has magically gotten better at securing their devices, to the point that the phone is now impossible to root. In particular, our device was rooted (1.73 firmware) something like 3 days after it was released, even with the locked bootloader and all the security that HTC could throw on it at the time. Its just my feeling that its really doubtful that HTC can go from that point, to making the device impossible to root in the matter of a few months..
Seen this new root method here on xda, any idea if compatible with our 1X?

Anyone know how to convert a verizon m8 to a htc dev edition ?
I hate verizon and their software, and it would be nice to not be running verizon software and convert to the dev edition and get updates and not have to wait for verizon to drag their feet like they always do.
I know I could go with a gpe rom but I have had bad luck with them, and its a lot easier to customize a sense rom and I do like sense 6, and I do believe the htc dev m8's run sense roms.
Anyone ?

Is your service through Verizon? Then no. You'll always have to "wait" on Verizon for the latest firmware, etc. You could always switch carriers and "wait" on them too. The grass is always greener on the other side. Verizon had the fastest m7 updates and had one slow m8 update. Even with the M7 people *****ed about how slow Verizon was (despite getting the major updates out before any other carrier). If you can't wait for updates, get the new Moto X.

I know it can be done there were posts about it before on xda because the process they talked about using a back up from an actual dev edition m8 to do it.
Just because my phone operates on verizon does not mean that it has to run on verizon software, just as you can purchase a dev edition or gpe edition m8 and use it on verizon without verizon software and firmware.
Right now I can run a gpe google play edition rom and get rid of the verizon software and even be able to get rid of the verizon firmware.
Just like you can get a google nexus and run it on verizon service and totally without verizon software and verizon firmware, so yes the verizon m8 can be converted to a dev edition its just a matter of figuring out the process of doing it.
So for the record your wrong...
I made a mistake in listing this I meant to say does anyone know how to convert a verizon m8 to a htc dev edition, as we all know it can be done its just about figuring out how to do it.
The phones are the same physically its all in the programming, so it can be done, my question is does anyone know how to acomplish this ????

well... it if were so simple it would be done, wouldn't it? Maybe not?
We must not have anyone on Verizon who wants this enough to put the time in to get it done.
If it has been done on other M8's then yes it can most likely be done on the Verizon variant.
to accomplish it?
reverse engineer the GSM M8 conversion.
talk to someone who converted a GSM M8 to Dev Edition, maybe they will tell you all that is required and you can start working on trying to do it, maybe they won't - who knows til ya try?
but basically you see how they did it on GSM, and "port" it to the Verizon variant using our files.
The main thing (I think anyway, maybe it doesn't even matter lol) - just giving my 2 cents - it has to do with hboot, much to the liking how edits are made by hex to the hboot.img to remove the red text, it would possibly have to be edited to be allowed to be flashed on our Variant.
I really don't know though, and I am not sure you will get many answers in this specific area, simply because it's Verizon, and the only people going to find it are the ones wanting it also on Verizon.
So, I would possibly post in the thread of a conversion thread and see what they say, or PM the OP of that thread and see what he says.
I don't think this spot will get much more than speculation such as this post right here, because if I knew how to do it, I would do it for you.

Yeah, I could have sworn I saw a topic on this in our forum when the phone came out like a couple months in. I just know there is no way I could ever figure it out I just know we have a lot of good devs cruising our forum so I figured maybe none of them ever really thought about it.
I"am just one of those people that has no choice but to use verizon even though I only get 1x data here which its on an Ohio state route highway, and at&t has very very weak signal cant even get any unless I go right out to the highway and then its edge most of the time, and no tmobile coverage for 30 miles.
I"am just trying to figure out a way to at least ditch their ( verizons ) software and firmware at least because theirs quite literally sucks and I cant really afford to go buy a dev edition so this was my only hope. I just hate verizon with a passion but I"am stuck with them.

I have tried the gpe roms and for some reason I could never get them to work, but I did on my old m7. The main thing for me was I could never figure out how to do all the customizing on gpe roms, like I do with the viperone rom I guess they have me spoiled, like I need to have the back up button to work to kill your current app when you hold it down, then I like to run the at&t signal icons instead of the verizon ones, then I like to remove the battery icon completely and just run the stock sense percentage for the battery.
Then I like the sense camera but I could do without it. And I like having the harman kardon audio. I know most of these features are not easy to set up on a gpe even if you can at all.
I did like how the gpe with my old m7 would run smother and use less of the phones memory just to operate the operating system.
I thought about trying the team nocturnal gpe rom again, but it seems like all the gpe roms have not been updated since early august so its been well over a month since any had updates which that kind of makes me weary to think the support is not there maybe ?
I just know with viperone they normally dont go more than a month at most without updating their rom, but for viperone they base it all on international firmware so I think the rom runs best on gsm versions and that for our verizon m8's I dont think it works as well as I had an at&t m8 and I think the viperone worked much better on it than it does on our verizon m8, but I really dont have a lot of choices of roms that are easy to customize like viperone.
I use to love the elegancia rom for the m8 and wish v6maniac would start it back up but it looks like that is not going to happen since hes on team insert coin which that rom is ok but to me my only choice has been viperone since no elegancia.

I highly suggest you give Liquid Smooth AOSP ROM a try with Apex launcher, I NEVER though I'd leave Sense and actually use AOSP ROM for more than an hour, but it's been my DD for months.
AOSP has everything, you can edit all the soft key buttons to whatever you want, it's not as many Tweaks as Venom, but no offense to them, they have a bit too many I get kind of lost..
can you do me a favor, and tell me the last four number of your baseband?
go into settings > about phone - should be in there..
do you know if you flashed the Android 4.4.3 firmware??
If not then this is a big issue and most likely why your having GPE ROM issues, also Team Venoms ROM will run muuhc better.
if you need help getting the new firmware let me know, (if you don't already have it installed..)

I"am on 0702 baseband, and I restored a stock backup and stock recovery and I took the ota for 4.4.3 the week it came out.
When I tried a couple gpe roms it was a while before the verizon firmware update came out but others were using them on the same verizon firmware, and the team nocturnal gpe is made for a verizon m8, its not like some of the other roms where they were made for international or gsm and then just modified to work on verizon m8.
I think roms that are made for your exact version of m8 work better than roms made for a different version then are adapted to work on the verizon m8 also.
Any news on this? I´ve been trying almost everything around to convert to WWE/Dev, no joy at all.

I doubt it matters who your on, its all about the conversion process working which no one has ever posted they converted the verizon m8 to a dev edition.
Only the gsm version have been able to be converted to a dev.
Believe me I tried and tried and tried and its posted all over where no one could figure it out.
The verizon m8 is a world phone meaning both cdma and gsm so in theory it should be possible but the cdma side may well be what keeps the conversion from working.
I do not think you will find much support on this going forward since the m9 is out now and most likely any conversion efforts would be put towards the new model m9 instead of last years m8.
Now if someone cracks this for the verizon m9 then it may be used towards the m8 also but the focus would mostly be on the new model m9 you would think instead of last years m8.

I feel your pain brother as I tried to do this on my verizon m8 I spent a couple week trying and finally gave up as their was really not enough dev interest on doing this and I couldnt do it myself as I fully admit I"am not the guy to do it.
If someone gets her done on the m9 I"am sure the m8 would get it also, until then I guess we verizon users are another red headed step child right in front of the sprint guys lol. At least until they eventually weed out cdma which might take years to do but I believe that is their goal by maybe 2020 lol same for ditching 1x and 3g to convert that spectrum to LTE.
I"am just going but what I have read so please dont anyone ask me for documentation on this lol.
