[bootanimation] Fallout 3 plus splash!

For all of the Fallout fans, I just finished putting this together. I had to shrink the bootanimation though, it was to big at just half screen, the phone wouldn't even load it....
[Splash]
Put it on the SD card, reboot into hboot, flash it (only flashes the image, does not delete data)
[Animation]
Stock users; place in /system/customize/resource and overright the stock (or rename it as a backup)
Rom users; place it in the /data/local directory, and rename it to bootanimation.zip
Currently working on getting a boot sound to put on the stock but it's being a pain.........

It's good to go now, still working on the sound. Anyone know the exact sample rate of the original file?

The splash is working great but not the animation. I'm on RCMixHD Kingdom ROM and put the file in the data/local directory but I still get the HTC animation. Is the location it needs to go ROM specific?

I got it working. Had to put it in the customize/resource folder.
I like it but the video is really small.
I really like the splash though

+1 on the splash - cant wait to show it to my kid.

I have been looking for a good video of the Vault Tec guy, whatever his name is, but I haven't been able to find one yet.

animation is not working with cyanogenmod. normally i would place in /system/media but when i rename and place in the folder all i get is a black screen.

yeah im having trouble also i pushed the fie using terminal on my phone to /data/local/, it shows up there but when i reboot i get a black screen.also the splash screen looks like a bad reception tv. any fixes for these, because i was excited to have this on my phone. now im bummed

Hey there,
I'm Will, Im a noob here, I work in motion graphics for a living. I promise not to step on your lawn.
I've been tinkering with my new phone (Galaxy S3) to try and make it look like a pip boy 3000. I also thought it would be cool to have the Boot animation be similar to the games, so I had a go at creating my own [Sorry cant post URLs Yet] problem is I cant figure out how to change it on the S3.
The file formate is QGM and I havent been able to find much on how to create them.
I was wondering if you might be able to help? or maybe your interested in collaborating? :highfive:

[Q] can't get new boot animation to work using rom toolbox

Hello, I would like to install a new boot animation.
I rooted my S3, installed Rom toolbox pro and went through the different boot animations. I previewed several of them. Installed the one I liked (actually changed the size to the max size as well, hopefully this isn't the cause of the issue I'm having). and even viewed the current animation (which it actually showed the one I choose).
I then rebooted as I couldn't find any other options for confirming that I selected a new animation. However my phones original animation continues to show.
With this I did a little digging and on a youtube video someone eluded to having to move the animation to another file, but gave no direction on how to perform this task.
I can't seem to get the animation to actually install or become my boot animation. What am I doing wrong? Please help
Edit: I've looked through similar threads on this forum and while at least 1 of them had the same issue, I couldn't find a solution that fixes this issue. (unless I just completely missed it of course and in that case please just point me in the right direction)

Ok, I'm really pulling my hair out here. All of the videos and instructions I have found have looked really simple (just click this button "install" and it works) whereas when I follow their "insturctions" nothing happens.
I know this is a simple process here but I am missing something.

in system/media there should be a file named bootanimation.zip overwrite it. fix permissions to match the folder/old one :good:
so the easiest way to get them from romtoolbox would be to download and move like i said. not the safest to let it install on its own.
also, half of the boot animations on there are not even in the correct dimensions. there are plenty of places on XDA and other sites where you can find WAY more , and probably in the correct size. hope this helps.
another thing : in the themes and apps section, there are even flashable boot animations. saves some of the hassle.

Thank you so much for the reply, however (as I am newer) I am stuck.
I went into system > Media and found no such file as bootanimation.zip.
I have seen this solution before, so I know others have had success with it. However it isn't there.
I have root access and I'm access this file system through rom toolbox, root browser.
There are no .zip files in that folder at all. The closest I came to is bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg
Now, I did check out the theme and app section but couldn't find this same issue there.

I downloaded Root Explorer and found the file you were referring to. Another thread suggested to rename the file bootanimation_bak.zip. I thought that route was a little less evasive as it didn't really get rid of the old boot animation. However, when I did that and copied the new animation in it still registered the original animation.
So, with that said, should I follow your first instructions as to overwrite the original file or is there something else here that I'm missing?

Try renaming the original bootanimation file to bootanimation.zip.bak then move the boot animation you want to system/media and name it bootanimation.zip. If that doesn't work it might be that the rom/kernel doesn't support custom boot animations.

No dice.
I thought you were on to something here as I found the system/media folder and had to change the permission to r/w and placed the boot animation.zip into it. However my old persistent one keeps popping up.
Now maybe I'm totally skipping a whole step here that everyone is assuming I'm taking. Do I have to have a custom Rom installed? I haven't done that yet, as none of the videos I've watched had instructed to do so. I'm rooted, that's it at this point.

Yes, the issue is the kernel not the rom. Your stock kernel is overwriting the boot animation. Considering you did do everything as the other user instructed you to do. You renamed the stock boot animation to .Bak and you renamed the one you want to play bootanimation.zip and placed it in the same folder?

Ok here are a couple screen shots of what I'm working with. I have followed every instruction through this thread.
This first shot is of the System/media folder. I pasted my new bootanimation.zip file here. Originally there was not a Bootanimation file here at all.

This second screenshot of the Data/local folder. This is where the orginal bootanimation.zip file was located. I was instructed to rename it as Bootanimation_bak.zip and paste my new Bootanimation.zip file here. Then was suggested that I change it from "_bak.zip" to ."zip.bak". Neither suggestion worked. Then it was suggested to move my new bootanimation.zip from the Data/local folder to the system/media folder. I did so and I changed the original name back to bootanimation_bak.zip. And this is where I currently am stuck at.

Now, I haven't done anything with my bootloader. I'm wondering if that is my issue, if I need to unlock my bootloader. I didn't want to get to involved with things that I didn't understand to fast and felt that replacing my boot animation seemed simple enough. So, do I need to unlock my boot loader?

As another user mentioned the stock kernel you are using doesn't allow you to use a custom boot animation. You will have to unlock your boot loader in order to flash a custom kernel that allows you to change the boot animation.

Ok, thanks. I just unlocked the boot loader. How do I know which kernel I should flash? Any suggestions?

Just make sure the kernel you flash is for your carrier and either touch wiz or aosp. If you're stock rooted it will be touch wiz. Just look through the development forums and find what works best for you. Right now I'm on bonestock rom with stock kernel but I really like Zeus kernel as well.

[UPDATED 12-25-14] Custom Boot Animations For Sprint Galaxy Note 4

Greetings Sprint GN4 Users, a little candy.
First off, credit for creating these animations goes to HanneMaster (And Others). All I did was make changes to the Flashable ZIP'z so they would work for the Sprint Variant Note 4.
Some of these were not flashable so I put them in flashable Zip format.
The Files are below.
How to:
Place the zip either on your internal or external sdcard
Boot into recovery
Locate the file & flash it
Reboot your device and enjoy!
The first one is an Android L Boot Animation.

For those who would like to do this manually through a file explorer do this:
** extract the Boot Animation file ("SPR_bootsamsung.qmg") from the ZIP (system/media). Place it on your EXT SDcard.
** Using your favorite root explorer, (I use es file explorer with root enabled) Go to system/media and find "SPR_bootsamsung.qmg". Select it, Rename it to something like "SPR_bootsamsung_ORIG.qmg".

** Copy the "SPR_bootsamsung.qmg" file that you placed on your EXT sdcard and paste it in the /system/media folder.

** Now you need to change the permissions. Select the "SPR_bootsamsung.qmg" file you pasted and from the More/properties menu (es file explorer) set the permissions to: rw-r-r.

** Repeat the same procedure for "SPR_bootsamsungloop.qmg" not forgetting to rename the original "SPR_bootsamsungloop.qmg" to something like "SPR_bootsamsungloop_ORIG.qmg"

REMEMBER... These are for the Sprint variant NOTE 4 but can be re-named to work with other variants. Look in your system/media folder to try and determine the correct naming for your variant.

I flashed matrix red boot animation and crt shutdown and it didn't work. Flashed together, separate, wiped caches, didn't wipe caches, and it never worked and until I flashed the stock ones back the phone would reboot after the screen would turn off. I'll try the manual way and see if that works.
Edit: manual way didn't work either. I'll try green matrix now.
Edit: flashed green, didn't work. Am I missing something? I'm I devdigitel 2.0 with twisted's kernel. Should those really effect this?

Well, what the flashable zip does is overwrite the existing bootanimation files (2). If your stock rooted the files will be named: SPR_bootsamsung. qmg and SPR_bootsamsungloop.qmg. Confirm they are there and permissions are set to rw - r - r. Make sure you can write to the device internally and get back to me. Sounds like it could be a write problem. Although the flash should have handled it.

Which root Explorer are you using. You renamed existing boot files then you copied over the new files and then changed the permissions then hit refresh to make sure it stuck.

So got mine to work. I removed the original two files and extracted the boot I needed files. Then placed them under system/media. When I deleted SPR and changed the permission to rw--r--r. It finally worked.

Alternative boot animations for your L-24(US) honor 5X

Here are a couple of alternative boot animations for the L-24 5X. Like all things with the 5X OS they are completely different to any animations I have made for any other device I have owned and I have only tried them using the install method I will describe.
Although I suggest you adopt my method I do not take any responsibility for any ills that may befall your device.
1) Copy the downloaded animation file to whatever folder you wish on your Ext SD card.
2) Using a File Manager navigate to the folder .... /system/media .... there you will find a file named bootanimation.zip ...... Either delete this file or rename it. You will not be using this file again.
3) Again using a File Manager move the new animation file you have downloaded to the folder .... /cust/hw/usa/media .... there you will find another file named bootanimation.zip, rename this file in case you wish to use it in the future.
4) Rename the new file you have moved there to ...... bootanimation.zip ...... Reboot and you will see your new animation.
IMPORTANT NOTE ::::::: THESE ZIP FILES ARE NOT FLASHABLE ZIPS, DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL BY FLASHING - DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL BY EXTRACTING THE CONTENTS OF THE ZIP FILE - ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS MOVE THE ZIP FILE TO THE FOLDER INDICATED
Please don't ask if they will work with L-21/L-22 variants - I don't have those devices so I am unable to test with them - however if you have "large, round, golden ones" and are willing to try, please help out others by informing us if they do or don't.
When you have renamed your new file to bootanimation.zip change the permissions to what the original one has.
I have included animated GIF's so you can have some idea as to what they look like. I would welcome others to build and publish other anims on this thread, when I have time I hope to add a couple more.

If you had bothered to read my post #1 you would have seen that I specifically asked for no questions in respect of the L-21 & L-22 variants because I had no way to test those devices. However if you wish to purchase an L-22 for me so that I can test it, then by all means let me know and I will give you the address where to send it.

L21 is using /cust/preinstalled/public/media/bootanimation.zip

@wickedesires ... I found virtually everything to be different and gave up trying to understand the method used and just copied the format of the original animation. To give you a brief and quick breakdown, the "desc.txt" file takes on a different format - each "part" file is named differently and when previously making animations for other devices I have always placed it in .... /system/media .... as I've said above this is not the case with the 5X. My advice to you is to download the original animation, break it open and amend it by keeping the original format and just replacing the ".jpg" files.
I would strongly advise testing any you make on your own device before publishing on a thread.

The attached is one I made for my moto G and I've hacked it about a bit and made adjustments, so count this as my first effort. I do have some other ideas which might work but will need a bit of work.
To any one who downloads it, I would remind you that all the previous strictures apply and please note that if you are on the BETA CM ROM or it fails to run, then put it in ...../system/media
As usual the GIF gives you an idea.

When I get some time to sit and fool with it I'm going to make a few more splash screens and some boot animations to go with them. It's just been hectic the last few days for my personal life lol. @metpolds I dig the new 1s bout to set Mona as mine until I can do those

Here's my first boot animation. It's stretched vertically to be 1080x1920 full-screen, the original was 1080x608. I also made a matching red version of the skull splash screen (which is in the boot logo thread).

@wickedesires ... Congrats on the anims, its good to see you won the battle against the 5X's os.

I made a couple more, but due to file size restrictions I can't upload them directly to this post. They are full HD so they are about 30mb each. They can be found here. I cannot guarantee that they will remain there a year from now but I will leave them unless I need the space. As always refer to OP for how/where to install.

[ROOT] [HD 10] Customize your boot animation

I finally figured out what was stopping a custom boot animation from being installed onto the HD 10 running stock FireOS. This guide will show you how to replace the boot animation, to just about anything you want. For reference, we are using my favorite Android boot animation from Marshmallow, but there is Lollipop boot animation as well. You need to be rooted in order to complete this guide.
****THIS MAY NOT WORK FOR YOUR TABLET. RESULTS CAN VARY. YOU ARE PERFORMING THIS GUIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK. WORST CASE SCENERIO: NO BOOT ANIMATION (MUST REFLASH YOUR CURRENT VERSION OF FIRE OS TO RESTORE IT)****
1. Download the Marshmallow boot animation zip from this thread (1080p is perfect) to your internal storage. Using a root explorer, open the zip file and tap system then media and extract 'bootanimation.zip' to your internal storage.
2. Download 'bootanimation.zip' at the end of this post and extract the 'bootanimation' file to your desktop PC or the internal storage of your tablet. (THIS IS NOT A FLASHABLE ZIP FILE)
3. Again, using a root explorer, navigate to /system/bin and make a copy the 'bootanimation' file and back it up to a folder in your storage. Now copy the 'bootanimation' file you downloaded in step 2 and paste it in /system/bin, overwriting the existing one. Make sure to set the permissions of the file to rwxr-xr-x
4. Using a root explorer again, go back to your internal storage and copy the 'bootanimation.zip' you extracted earlier in step 1. Then navigate to /system/media and paste 'bootanimation.zip'. Set the permissions to rw-r--r--

The answer was in /system/bin. Amazon modified the 'bootanimation' file in /system/bin so only their boot animation is the one used. If you had only placed the zip in /system/media, the animation would animate for a few seconds, freeze and just before the end of booting, would start to animate again. I tried portrait and landscape. I tried different resolutions. I tried different animations and every one of the animations would freeze. I opened up the ROM for the Fire 7 (Fire Nexus ROM by @ggow) and copied the 'bootanimation' file from /system/bin over to the stock FireOS ROM on the HD 10, and set the proper permissions. Problem solved!
Updates:
January 11, 2019: The bootanimation-STOCK.zip attached below, contains the stock FireOS bootanimation. Simply delete the bootanimation.zip in /system/media (if there is one). Extract/unzip the bootanimation-STOCK.zip into internal storage and copy/paste the bootanimation file to /system/bin, overwriting the one there.

Heads up. If you simply overwrite the file in /system/bin with the bootanimation file (not the zip) and reboot, you get a surprise. I don't want to ruin it With that said, if someone could extend that animation a little...

Should be able to copy the .zip from /system/media to the same folder on the HD 10. The worst that can happen is it won't work (but won't break anything. You may get a black screen until the booting finishes) or the graphics will be too small.
Edit: still need to overwrite the bootanimation file in system/bin no matter what animation you want to use. It just needs to be done once

I just tested that out. Thanks for the info! Works great.

I cannot, regardless of what I do, get this to work.
I have followed the instructions - exactly - multiple times now.
I have tried numerous bootanimation.zip, including the one linked to in OP.
Files are in the proper locations, file permissions are set as specified.
It doesn't matter if I have the zip in /system/media or not, I get a black screen until UI loads.
Power on --> amazon logo --> black screen --> UI, no matter what I seem to do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is driving me nuts, I just don't understand what I'm missing or doing wrong.

No zip in /media, restored bootanimation in /bin to the original, still just a black screen during boot.
So this broke the bootanimation altogether.
Edit: I will add that my stock OS was 5.6.0.1. I suspect something has changed from previous versions, what was your stock version? What was OP's?

You have to place the bootanimation.zip in /system/media after overwriting the file in /system/bin. Unzip the animation in the link in OP. There will be another zip inside it. that's the zip you use.

Yeah I follow, and I did so several times. I can't even revert to having the stock "fire" boot animation.
Following the guide effectively broke my boot animation altogether. Again, I cannot even go back to having the original boot animation. Same thing the guy who replied after me reported as well.

Make sure the permissions are set correctly. .bin file: rwxr-xr-x and the .zip: rw-r--r--

Yes, I have, numerous times. As I have said.
I'm going to flash my system.img backup and see if that restores the stock boot animation, because nothing else has.
Edit: dd-ing my system.img of my post-root supersu backup restored my boot animation to stock.
Final Edit/Update:
Confirming that this does indeed work. I'm not sure what exactly I did the first time, but it completely botched the boot animation.
dd'd system.img (I had other compelling reasons to anyway), followed the instructions again, exactly as they are written.
I didn't even extract the zip on PC and then push, I did it all in ES.
The first time I did this I think I had some sort of permission issues (had to delete bootanimation and then paste the replacement, couldn't overwrite), and I suspect that combined with a little user error ruined boot animation. Anyway, thank you for the guide @DragonFire1024. This is a little thing, but completely worth it, imo.

Very strange but glad it worked. You can now have just about any boot animation you can find. Simply replace the zip in /system/media, give permissions, reboot. Just make sure to have the right resolution ?

I still have no idea where I messed it up. It seems like ES wasn't actually in Root Explorer, it showed the permissions as being set, but they definitely weren't.
Was weird that I could delete then paste bootanimation in /bin but not overwrite.
Of course, right after I got this working I used a boot animation that wasn't the right resolution.
I thought 1440p would just look better, not give me a bootloop
I've spent way too much time on merely changing the boot animation. :laugh:
