Shield Tablet going to get own forum? - Shield Q&A

Is there going to be a forum dedicated to the Shield tablet or do we just ask our questions here?

Since you can only buy it from nvidia and maybe newegg right now (US at least) it may take some time before a forum is created. That being said I can almost guarantee that a forum will be started at some point. It may be worth a message to a moderator, instead of posting around this forum,as I'm willing to bet it is already in the works.
EDIT: it looks like it hits Amazon and best buy on August 18. There should be a forum by then.

places to buy the tablet are actually decently widespread. I got mine on amazon and i think bestbuy.com and gamestop.com both have them as well as newegg and nvidia.

Like is the bezel being to long annoying?

I really don't notice the extra length from the speakers. When I'm not gaming it is in portrait and you really don't notice it. Front facing speakers are amazing though.
It is heavier than any tablet I've used and you can feel it if you hold it up awhile. I rest it on my stomach or leg a lot. I had the Google play edition lg g pad 8.3 and this seems quite a bit heavier even.
It is hard to find flaws at this point since it is so new to me and there seem to be no imperfections for me to be annoyed at right now other than nvidia not shipping the cover yet....

Yeah if anyone finds a store with the controller or cover, please post it. I can't find anywhere to get the accessories other than the nvidia store

They have the cover for same day shipping at Frys.com right now. I ordered mine yesterday and it shipped today.
I set up a stock notification for the controller at newegg, a batch came and went there yesterday.

Got mine from amazon on a pre order and received on the 31st. As other have said it is heavier than other tablets of the same size but its not a big deal. The extra length from the bezel is not really noticeable when holding the device and playing games. When you get your device there will already be an OTA update for the tablet. Once I applied that update I rooted my device by using goehot's towelroot from: https://towelroot.com/

Worth mention. I loaded Google Now Launcher (may happen stock too) and noticed any shortcut for an app that was moved to SD disappears when I reboot the tablet. I think this is an Android issue though not a issue specific to the shield tablet.

i know that there is no right answer but , what are the chances of this device getting cyanogenmod support (as CM is mostly known for their work on snapdragons)

Has any one had issues charing to 100%. Also own forum would be great and what version of town root. Thanks.

Cycle your battery a couple times. Drain it to zero and charge to full and repeat. I've seen this on many devices.

Forgive the attempt to get this thread back on topic, but I would like to see the Shield Tablet get it's own forum, too.
I think if NVidia markets it right, the Shield Tablet is going to sell well. It is also very attractive to the xda crowd due to it's features and specs. It may become the next "Geek Badge" (Geek Shield?). It is for me. I think it deserves it's own forum, or at least sections in this forum.

You also have to take into account possible RMAs if you get a bad version. Newegg also doesn't charge tax in certain states. So those small things could be the deal breaker if you want to save a little money.

I highly suggest Amazon. It's $398 there also and if you have a prime account you get free 2 day shipping.
Amazon has by far the best customer service out of any supplier I have ever purchased anything from. If you have any problems at all the CS takes care of it fast and easily.
I tend to get as many electronics as possible from Amazon because they give me an ease of mind should anything go wrong with the device I know there won't be any hassle to return it.
Also, there is no sales tax (at least here in texas there isn't not sure about where you are located) making the price almost equal to the bestbuy deal I believe.

Optimus Prime offers the best advise. Buy it where you have the best return policy. I am on my second TF and some members have returned theirs multiple times for different issues. My screen died and the new one I replaced it with has worse screen light leaks than the first one and I would like to return it if it gets any worse. Get yours where you will be able to return it without any hassels if you need to. On the TF, I would probably advise buying the 1 year replacement insurance from your retailer so you don't have to box it up and send it off to Asus repair facilty in Texas after your standard 30 day retailer warranty policy expires. I have read some real horror stories...
Best buy $350 with staples $50 off tablet, PC coupon.
My buddy was looking for a tablet and I sent him the coupon (that expired today 6/17) and he walked out happy.
$350 for a major player on the front line of the android tablets is a great deal.

I have bought quite a few tablets. The TF is a great device but has manufacturing issues. I like my TF, it has the most storage of any device currently out there. My 32GB TF with 32GB MicroSD and 32GB SD has more than I should ever need. The screen resolution is the best, the battery dock allows for 16 hours of use, handy on my overseas flights. To answer your question, I think if you wait for the perfect device, you will never see it. I will buy them as they come along and be educated on each one...

The only ones I can find used are $4 cheaper. And I'd just pay that $4 for a complete new one. If I can find a used one like yours that is a decent amount off the original, ill probably buy it.

I personally am very picky about how something functions and how it should be working. I expect something to work as it should. The transformer so far does the job well other than the light bleed i have no issues. but also do understand things do sometimes with time malfunction... but not with in the first 2 months of owning said item.
i did buy the extended warranty from best buy though. Screw Asus and their RMAs thingys might as well take it to the store cant fix it. the replace it
picky me... im on my 5th phone actually with in 2 months because they didnt work as expected. i dont put up with bull ha!

Worth the wait?

Me AND my girlfriend have been looking to get this tablet for a few months now... She is just a girl that won't use it to the extent I would... As an example she has my old evo 4g while I have the 3d... so I was wondering if I should get this transformer now for her and white for the transformer 2 or if I should just get both now...
Any comments on either tablet?
Tia

it all depends. correct me if im wrong but the transformer 2 doesnt have a guaranteed release date. it has an expected one. if you can wait it out for a few months or longer by all means. but honestly there will ALWAYS be a new device with better specs announced months , hell even days after getting a new device. you'll be waiting forever with the " i gotta have the latest and greatest" mentality. but hey its up to you. i say just get it now
Is getting the TF for you now and then hand it to her when the TF2 comes out and you buy it for yourself an acceptable solution?

I'm pretty sure it will be easy to sell the TF if you want the TF2 once it comes out. Craigslist for $350 easy.

yeah but once the tf2 comes out wont that drop?
Get an ipad 2. At least you'll know the value of that thing will not fall so easily.
Well IMO, I would go for a transformer now (as I did). There is no guaranteed release date for the TF2 and I don't want to sound pessimistic, but it'll contain new hardware and new OS, so probably it will have issues and it will take some time to iron out the early and unforeseen bugs. Hopefully I am wrong and it will be good straight from the launch I'll get one and sell the "old" if it will be much better than the current.
The tegra 3 chip is due to be released at the end of this year. It will take some time for asus engineers to adapt the chip into their tablet design. It will also take some extra time to stamp out bugs.
So, how long are you willing to wait? My prediction is we will see the gen 2 TF next March or April.
You go ahead and wait if you want.
If you're buying now? No it's not worth buying! when it was first released with android 3.0 it was a great device, almost perfect, but with constant worthless updates that have only ruined it my advice would be don't bother.
The last straw for me was updating to 3.2 (in the end i decided to because of constant *&(%&** pop-ups telling me there was an update available, and i just got pissed off with them) which totally ****ed up my music player, art never loads correctly.
I emailed them about a cure and they suggested a factory reset, which i did, then spent 4 hours re-installing my music only to have it go back to the same problem 2 days later.
There advice now is to send it in for a replacement, just for a ****ing software update that they had reason wahtsover to release in the first place, accept to help those wingy baby winers who ask for constant updates in the sad belief that new equals better
Did you know you can buy a 32gb xoom for the same price as a 16gb transformer I did

Let me understand: getting rid of bugs and improving the speed, adding features is bad... OK, fine. So you got rid of a fast updating device for the fastest one? Makes a lot of sense. Like, totally. Why not the Galaxy Tab 10? If Samsung does the same as with the original one you'll probably see up to 3-4 updates during the whole lifecycle.

So I talked it over with my girl and I think I got an idea...
If the TF2 is released late Q4 like all my googling has me to believe then I will get the TF1 in a few Weeks... Tweak it all out thanks to XDA and it's awesome developers and when the TF2 comes out I'll get that and my girl will put up $250ish + a "few favors" for the TF1... then BAM! Idea?

But it's true, whether you want to hear it or not.
I kept my eyes big and wide and was able to get the TF brand new at $255. Combined with my keyboard dock, that was about $380 I paid for my TF+dock setup brand new. I have not been able to find an ipad or ipad 2 anywhere near that price.
If you are worried that something newer and better is just right around the corner, why not get an ipad 2 so you can resell it for almost the value you paid for it?
Again, the tegra 3 will be released by nvidia at the end of this year. It will take asus at least 3 months to get these chips into their TF2. And it will take them another couple months to stamp out the bugs and smooth out the hardware-software compatibilities. My prediction is sometime in March or April, possibly May.
I first heard about asus building the transformer a whole year before it actually came out. There's a lesson for you.
So, since you are having doubts about getting the TF now, might as well get the ipad 2 and then next April you can try to get your hands on the TF 2 and resell your ipad 2 at almost its original value.
Either that or be like me and be happy with what we have right now. I have absolutely no intention to upgrade unless I see another deal like the one I had with my TF.

That same rumor said the transformer would come out in 2010. I remember anxiously waiting for it. Well, a whole year later, it finally hit the market.
Yikes!
So,is it too late to pick up the Transformer say in a couple of weeks? October? Are there any other quad-core tablets shipping in the coming months? Besides the Transformer 2?

Yeah im sure there will be but i REALLY like the whole Netbook/Tablet thing... ESPECIALLY if windows 8 is a goal for developers... All i really need a PC for right now is Minecraft and that should be fixed on the Transformer... I've gone the last year without a decent computer because i have had my EVOs... so a Transformer would be a good Mix for me... I thought about the Galaxy 10.1 but i didnt like the keyboard options it came with... So its the TF/TF2 for me!!!
I would say buy now. The longer you wait, the less likely u are going to find revision B60 or below...the revisions that can be rooted/rom'ed. I have already read a horror story about how some dude went to multiple stores and checked the entire stores stock looking for B60 or below and couldn't find one. The B70 revision has been out for a while now and it still hasn't been rooted yet. You may end up having to buy one on ebay or something if you want to root it.

[Q] Thinking of buying one of these

I love Android, and especially the community that every device has.
I currently have an Epic 4G Touch (Sprint's GSII) and I have never owned a tablet.
This Thanksgiving break I visited my cousins and lo behold, practically all of them had an iPad 2. It was a very convenient thing to have around, I never really saw a tablet as a useful item. But I see that tablets are really neat now, it's like a phone, but bigger and not as heavy and clunky as a laptop.
And with today's web based world, it's really convenient to have a tablet on your coffee table to just use when chatting with friends, family gatherings or just watching tv and you need to look up something on the web. Or a device to watch Netflix or Hulu on, but your phone's screen is just too small and it's weird to hold it. Blah blah, useful features could go on.
Anyways, I missed the BestBuy sale for $250 unfortunately, and Gamestop is sold out for $300. But on Craiglist, a lot of folks are selling them for $330 unopened because they are bastards and bought them during black friday to make a profit.
I know the Transformer Prime is coming out on 12/8 for $500 but I simply can't afford that. Do you guys think that the regular Transformer will drop down in Price after the Prime comes out?
So I am left with multiple dilemmas:
1. Buy brand new for $330 off craiglist
2. Wait for possible price drop
3. 3D monitor + nVidia 3D vision kit
4. Solid State Drive
When I look into Android products I look into the modding community for the device on XDA, and it looks like the Eee pad has the best one.
So, should I get one or no?
If you could provide me with a link to buy one for under $300, I will buy it without hesitation.
Thank you
I can't give you a link, but I will tell you that you will certainly love your Eee Pad. Keep looking. This week has a lot of good internet deals. You're bound to find something. Otherwise offer someone on craigslist around $315 and see if they bite. Even at $330, its still a great value.

As an owner of a transformer I can personally say that it's a great device. It does everything for me (including the stuff you listed) and i'm not sure how much a performance boost the quad core will actually bring (to me i think the tegra 3 is an overkill in processor power).
I recall asus saying that when the transformer prime is released, the old transformer price will drop to 250 and 350 for the 16 and 32gb models (respectively). Don't quote me on this though.
However, if your interested in the dev/modding of the transformer you may be disappointed. I believe all the models you'll find in the stores today will have a locked kernel which means you can't root the device (until the xda dev's figure a way out)

Save your money and go to Best Buy and price match it with Game Stop for $299. I just bought the wife one for Christmas.
There will be a lot of these for sale as people trade up to the Prime, however I would be very cautious of the Craig's list ones advertised as new in box. They are more likely to be used with the box. The same thing happened when the current transformer replaced the Viewsonic Gtab. Once the prime comes out, you should be able to get a good used TF for $250 or so with some acc.

I just called the best buy in my town and they said it had to be in stock in the store in our town too. So no deal on that. Luckily I snagged one last night from bhphotovideo for 344. Hopefully they don't get too cheap any time soon. They are selling out almost everywhere though.

You should be able to find one for $300. I bought one (excellent condition, barely used) last week with dock for $350 and there seem to be a few at around 320 without dock. Wait a week or so, people who have it at 320+ will not end up selling them anyway and when the prime comes out they'll go in the 250-300 range pretty quickly.
Best buy models are tf101-x1 and everywhere else they are the original tf101-a1. Best buy did this to prevent price matching the device because Walmart and others sold the a1 model, good luck on price matching

Just to revisit the original question for a moment, the SSD purchase might be a compelling alternative. It depends how you use the PC you would be putting it in, but they can pretty dramatically speed up a lot of tasks. Disk I/O is quite often the bottle neck in modern systems, and going from a spinning platter and arm to no moving parts could have a dramatic effect. Again though it all depends on how powerful your system is (if it can take full advantage of the IO speed gains), and what types of tasks you use it for.
Of course the flip side of that is: you may end up using your PC a LOT less if you pick up a Transformer, Prime or original. I know I do. Between my blackberry (email, instant messaging) and transformer (web surfing, google reader for rss feeds, and occasional angry birds or similar simple gaming), I barely have to use my laptop any more.
I got mine during black friday at best buy too. I was hestitant at first and wasn't sure about the rooting because of it being a newer and different model but this tablet is amazing. I love the internet, FLASH!, the apps, and the widgets. I hooked up to my tv the other day to show my roomates and they were blown away. I already rooted mine too just need to overclock it. This is is my first tablet and android device. The camera isn't that great but I did not get it for the camera. I recommend the best buy way. Buy it now and when the prime comes out you can return it to best buy and get the prime.
If I play with the prime and it seems worth it I will probably do that. However, if you want a first generation one there will probably be lots of people selling them on here. Totally worth the black friday mess and being short for rent. Also, if you use your phone as a hot spot with it it's even more amazing. There are plenty of apps to enjoy even without wi-fi and spotify or rdio for music.
I atually do use my laptop less now. Only thing I dont like is the laggyness of the keyboard strokes on this site. I am hoping overclocking will solve it. Dolphin and stock are both fast but I like dolphin the best so far. I'm falling in love with the touch gestures. Made one just for XDA
There are a couple of ways to get it for $299. Call around to the local game stops and see if they have the transformer in stock. When you called best buy you gave too much information.

Lenovo IdeaPad A2109

I'm thinking about picking up one of these tablets.. any idea if they've been rooted? Any custom roms?
Thanks

Well I have one (in my signature), and there is no official root I know of. However, this device is very similar to Asus transformer infinity and also runs pics, which as an almost universal root tool somewhere (don't remember where to find it). I am hoping someone would be willing to test this on the a2109, as theres many things I wish for root with. As for roms, cwm will need to be made for this and, again, infinity pad may help. But in all honesty, this is so fast that I would be too concerned for roms. Theming would be nice though

A buy-it-now is on the auction site for $260, including shipping. Very slightly (obviously) used. I'm quite happy with mine.

Just bought one at Best Buy for 259.00 this thing is smooth and fast I'm impressed. The screen is its only down fall. Head on viewing is not that bad. Definitely worth the 259.00

I totally agree the speed and smooth, I actually went in to get the ASUS TF300F, but when I held it was just too heavy. There are a few cons such as the camera and the lack of pretty much any accessories. I'd read on another forum that a guy got the Galaxy 8.9 case M-EDGE case for it, so I got the 14.99 one and it fits, though it is pretty tight, and doesn't close completely. It's close enough that I don't worry about anything scratching the screen. Also the way it folds does allow you to use the camera with ease and none of the buttons are covered. I've spent 4 hours searching for a case made specifically for the tablet and not even the MFG has one yet. They do have a picture of a smart cover, but it's nowhere on the site or anywhere else.
I think the people that make non OEM products have bought into the reviews slamming the tablet so much that they didn't decide to make anything for it, which is pretty sad. It's an awesome tablet for people on a budget and doesn't like the garden wall of the KF, lack of additional memory of both the KF and Nexus, and IMHO the specs are awesome. The salesperson did a bench mark test in store and was totally shocked at the rankings it ranked well above all the big name tablets, so at 259 I was definitely sold.
Speaking of the screen, I've viewed it at every angle that I use and there was no problem. I've previously owned the Toshiba Thrive 10.1 and this baby blows it out the water with ease. I kept my KF because trade in went down to 35.00 from 75.00 within a week.
Maybe with people giving positive feedback, more retailers will carry products for it.

I've been posting reviews to every site I can think of, except Amazon. They still haven't gotten their **** together regarding the A2109 specs. Probably a campaign of FUD to sell their own products. Newegg, though, has very few reviews so far...
For those of you not on the Lenovo forums yet, there is now a dev ROM for the A2109. Right now we're at the point of having root, cwm, and a ROM free of bloatware and deodexed -- ready for some theming. Not like I've done any of the work -- by "we" I mean thanks to mcl we now have it.

Well, I took the Lenovo A2109 back to Best Buy today and swapped it for the ASUS TF300T 16GB for a 90.00 difference. They have the same specs under the hood based on a few quick searches on the web. Honestly I hated to do it, because I rather liked the A2109, but the screen kept doing these weird flashes. At first I thought it was something I was doing, but I googled it and it's a known issue. I decided that with the screen already being the only bad thing about the tab and then the flashing I'd just go with something else. Luckily BB had the 16GB ASUS in stock, since it wasn't there the last few times I checked.
There seems to be more support and accessories for the ASUS tab as well. I've not had the chance to test it yet because apparently you have to let it charge a couple of hours before you can use it. (Thought I'd have to make another trip to BB)
I'll update on my blog when I get some play time with it. Just before I took the A2109 back I ran AnTuTu and Vellamo tests on it for S&G and it ranked pretty high, so I want to see if the ASUS tab does the same thing.
I can't post any urls here as a new member, but there is a link to my blog on my profile. Just case anyone is interested.

$90 more? Ooooh... I'd ask for a refund and see how this turns out

Spec wise the Nook tab can't touch the ASUS or Lenovo. The only place it would be beat the Lenovo is the screen. Right now the ASUS is running stock JB and still out performing the Lenovo, which I bought for the specs in spite of the screen.

There is considerable development on the ROM front on the Lenovo official forums. I can't link either because I'm a n00b too, but with just a simple google search using the model name bought it up.

Just picked one of these up tonight -- primarily for the family (non-techie wife & 2nd grade daughter). We've used it for a little over an hour and I'm already noticing random screen flashes. So far they're not anywhere near annoying enough to think about taking it back, but I'm keeping an eye on it. So far very, very pleased!

Excellent! I have noticed the screen glitches myself, and they don't seem to become more frequent or serious over time, so I think what you see is what you will get. I suppose you notice them more when you are concentrating on it. Ordinarily a defect like this would drive me crazy, but for the price I'll overlook it!

The only forum so far is at Lenovo:

There are multiple devices in this forum, not just the A2109. There's a reasonably active group of users over there tho.

I just wanted to come back let you know that the ASUS TF300 is indeed awesome. Even though the two tablets share most of the same specs, the ASUS tab seems to just fly and I have to admit the screen alone was well worth the additional money.

Yeah? I'm jealous. Of course, at this point I'd be pre-ordering the Nexus 10 if I were willing to pay more than the $250 I shelled out for this guy. The one thing I would miss, tho, is the convenient size. I really like how easy it is to handle. The 10" on the Gtab were a little much for me. Rationalizations... But now I have an upgrade to look forward to -- after mcl & I get an overclocking kernel running

I've been thinking about the Nexus 7 inch since the 16 GB model dropped to 199 to replace my KF. I still think 7 inches is the sweet spot for a portable tablet, and I'd also love to have the "true" Android experience with out MFG tweaks, but that will be after the New Year and who knows what will be available then. They seem to be introducing the next big thing every week now.

[Q] Too good to be true?

So after having my TF101 for over a year, it took a nasty fall and became unusable. This was of course devastating, made even worse by the fact that I am about to start at a new school. I have been wanting to upgrade for awhile, but since I bought it with my last paycheck from a job I lost, this has not been possible. However, due to this tragedy, my parents are considering buying me a new one, but paying full price is out of the question. So, I found this site through Google selling a TF300T for only $229, which seems too good to be true. Can anyone say if this is a legit site?

If it seems too good to be true and is from an unheard of retailer, i'd recommend you avoid it

I read a lot of comic books and the 10.1 screen is perfect for them. Also, I like the convertibility. And of course, the Nexus not having expandable storage is a deal breaker for me.

You can expand the storage by connecting a memory stick/HDD into the micro-USB port by using some cable (can't currently remember the cables name). And there have been rumours of a Nexus 10 coming soon. Anyways 229 is probably too little for TF300 because here where I live the 32 GB one without the dock is 419.

If you can afford it, then, I'd go for the TF700. I downloaded the "free preview" of Watchmen from Barnes & Noble and it was pretty cool, but it was also pretty obvious that on a high-def screen it would absolutely rock. I'm not much of a comics guy, but if I were, that's definitely what I'd do.
I got mine from amazon....it was used like new and I'm very satisfied with my purchase.
hell just send me the cash i would at least send you the empty box you would not even get that from them i see them vanishing really quick in the near future

I second this, got my from Amazon, next day shipping, Like new, for 269 I believe just a couple weeks ago. Still had ICS on it (no promise there though) so if I had wanted to retain the ICS bootloader I would have been able to.
I'm smitten with mine, although I really REALLY wish dev. would move forward a little farther.
Nice tablet though! My fiance was able to trade her BS prime in for a brand new TF700 at Best Buy, straight trade even thought we have had it for almost a year due to the issues it is known for. Color me jealous
