[Completed] How does one backup a stock rom without root - XDA Assist

I just bought a new at&t HTC One (M8) and I'd like to have a fresh stock backup in case of return/warranty problems. I'd like to make this myself so I can ensure that I'll be able to put the exact software that came with my phone back if need be. What I've found via search has been for rooted phones or different brands. Is it possible to use ADB or any other tool to do this? I guess I'm confused because I see posts for flashing back to stock. How do devs get these? If someone could point me to a good guide/tutorial it would be much appreciated.

Hi,
generally speaking you do need root to make a full backup of your device but this is not always the case or sometimes it is possible to temp-root your device to perform a backup.
I would suggest asking your question in the att htc one m8 q&a thread found here
you should easily find your answer searching those threads or if not ask there and a helpful user with your phone will guide along
best of luck!

Root/ROM question

Hi All,
I know this has been asked before, but I was hoping to get some more specific answers than I could find in other threads.
I have the galaxy S Captivate from Rogers, which is still running 2.1. Would I have any problems rooting/updating the rom or kernel with my specific version of the phone? Are there any hardware differences, or is it all just cosmetic? And if I update the ROM or root, will I have any problems upgrading to Froyo once rogers sees fit to release it?
In that regard, what would be the best ROM? Or should I do a kernel/firmware upgrade? Not too sure what the difference is really.
I'm also wondering what else I can do with the phone once it's rooted. I mean, I know that I can access all parts of the filesystem and have sudo which would be nice, but what do people specifically use it for? I guess it's needed for the ROMs and loaders and stuff.
Thanks! I appologize for any questions which have been asked in the past, but I wasn't sure that everything applied the same way with different versions of the phone.
Cheers
Also, does rooting my phone cause all my information to be deleted? What method of rooting would be the safest/easiest?
Thanks!
Edit: Ah, I see that it shouldn't, and that the z4root would probably be easiest.
Still not sure what ROM I should use or how to back it up, i'll search the forums some more but some links or posts would be much appreciated. There's an overload of information on here haha.
Cheers
Do a nandroid backup to be able to go back to your stock Rogers ROM if you want.
Any ROM will work.
Also back up your /efs folder to preserve your IMEI code #.
Worst case scenario is you flash a ROM that doesn't have Rogers APN info in it, in which case you can add it manually or switch to another ROM. Pretty sure all of.them do.

Rooting? Flashing a rom? Radios? I'm so overwhelmed =/

I read through a bunch of guides on rooting and flashing a rom and all this has gotten me extremely confused. All I want to do is root my phone. I want to keep the stock HTC rom except I want my phone to be rooted.
What is the safest way to do this with almost no chance of getting my phone bricked? I keep hearing this thing about a "radio off" and how easily it bricks your phone. I am looking for the absolute safest root method out there.
All I need is to remove the SIM Lock since I am going to Europe in 2 weeks. I might try underclocking as well. Also, I obviously have an HTC Inspire 4G
I recommend the ace hack kit. Its extremely easy now with version 11. Its simply as following the prompts and hitting 1,2,3. Once rooted flash attn1 rom. And you will be stock rooted with the latest Ota's radio
As to the radio s off, that in itself is not the problem but of flashing of radios. For example if you happens to flash a radio that was corrupted while downloading that has a potential to cause a brick. That's why you should always verify the downloads.

If you just need the sim unlocked, just call AT&T for the code. If your Inspire qualifies...is not new and still under consignment...they should provide one. No need to root to unlock the sim. And just because there seems to be a lot of people rooting their Inspires doesn't mean it is popular. I haven't rooted mine and don't plan to because my Inspire works flawlessly as is with the OEM ROM. If you are feeling the urge or pressure to root your Inspire just because other people are doing it, don't. If the Inspire was running WinMo or some other low-quality OS, yes, then take the time to root. But it isn't. The Inspire is running Android. There's nothing wrong with Android as it currently is.
Hello and welcome. IMHO, att1's Hack Kit is the way to go. So long as you don't have a bunch of apps on your phone yet, start to finish rooting will take approximately 15 mins.
This will flash the stock rooted rom back onto your phone. It's incumbent upon you to backup any SMS, apps, contacts...that you don't want to lose.
Take you're time, read the EFFIN MANUAL and search prior to askin any q's relating to using the hack kit. Should you run into a situation that you're unable to find a concise answer for, drop into the chat room and see if your issue(s) can be resolved from there.
Good luck,
Tx
As he said above if all you want is sim unlock, get an unlock code.
If you insist on rooting, we will be happy to help you through the process, as long as you promise to continue reading, and researching before you attempt it.

Okay, if its rooting, the best remedy is to read the threads, I know there is a lot. There is a lot of information on this forum, and alot of the questions you have been asking have been covered a couple times.
As said above all the instructions including a stock rooted rom (with the ota update and bloat removed) are included in the hack kit. What the hack kit will do, is help you create a gold card (to bypass the CID check), downgrade the rom ( you won't have sound while downgraded), root then s-off (security off) the phone which also sim unlocks the phone, then flash a rooted stock rom.
Mud is correct and I have run into him a lot today posting lol. He also made the sticky at the top of the forum. He knows what he is talking about. This isn't the first phone I have rooted. But it is the first that wasn't a one click root. The ace hack kit was very simple to use just read read read and read again make sure you understand the process before starting. If you don't understand ask in this thread and we can all try to help out as best we can. Although i think mud will be taking the most of this lol. Also use the search feature and google your probably not the first person with a problem so more then likely the answer is already out there. Good luck with rooting.

Can someone please extract the stock T-Mo USA ROM?

Can someone here please post a backup of the stock T-Mobile USA ROM, as in out-of-the-box condition (well, rooted is acceptable, but otherwise stock)?
I also need to get a hold of the radio for it. If anyone can provide this, it would be greatly appreciated.

been tons of posts asking for this. hopefully someone pulls through!
+Bump
What would be necessary to create this? I'm still running a stock, non-rooted, locked bootloader phone. I've of course linked to my Google accounts and installed my usual apps but that's it.
I'm no dev and my experience is limited to knowing how to use Odin and I've flashed many a ROM via CWM but I don't really have any experience with adb or anything like that.
Having said that, I can follow directions like nobody so if there is a way I can do this that is low/no (yeah, I know no doesn't exist) risk I'm game. Just tell me what I need to do or someone get on IM and walk me through it.
I just don't want to be in a situation where I end up with a brick. I can't afford another phone and I'm really loving my One S. As much as I love custom ROMs it's not bad out of the box (I'm coming from Touchwiz so I know the pain) but I also understand the need and importance for the development community of a good stock image to revert back to.
Is what you guys are wanting basically a nandroid backup? If so that would require unlocked bootloader, root and CWM wouldn't it?
I'm uploading a rooted nandroid ROM and a unrooted one. Check out my thread in development section.

Noob question - How to install CWM recovery?

I'm coming from an iPhone and have been reading and re-reading threads on rooting to make sure that I do it correctly. I think I'm all set to use Odin and have all the files downloaded. Seems pretty straightforward.
The only question I have is; how do I get CWM recovery installed?? I had a Droid X years ago and bought Rom Manager Premium, can I download and use that??
Thanks.
P.S. Sorry if this is a super noob question. I just don't wanna brick my phone.
follow my guide in the developoment section or click link in sig...all you do is download the ez recovery app from playstore..you must be rooted first!

I just went to the play store and looked at that ez recovery app, friggin sweet!!! Thanks!
I'll root and backup later on today!! This app makes it easy cause I'm not familiar with adb commands.
I just came from a Verizon HTC Rezound to the Verizon Samsung GS3, and I am a bit confused at the differences between the two. It appears things like rooting and ROM flashing are done WAY differently on the S3. I managed to get it rooted and have TB and SU working without an issue, and I was able to flash a custom recovery with ROM Manager, but still have some confusion about the inner workings of this phone.
1. Does this phone have an HBOOT?
2. Can I do Nandroid backups on this phone?
3. What is this flash counter I keep seeing mentioned?
Thanks in advance.

I know he probably should have created a new thread for this question. However, I too am curious as to the answers to these questions. Is there anyone familiar with HTC devices that can explain the differences? Especially 2 and 3 as the term flash counter has me rather frightened. I am looking to purchase a new phone and really want the GS3 but not if I can only flash the ROM a few times.

Yeah, don't jack my thread!!!
After finding out the issue was a bit of user error I got CWM to flash correctly.

if you follow the methods in my guide you wont trip the flash counter...most new android devices have a counter that counts how many times custom software was flashed on the device. there are ways to reset it aswell...best advice is to start doing alot of reading! my guide will get you where you want to go, but i dont have the time or patience to explain all the differences between samsung and htc for flashing roms. i will say samsung is much harder to brick thanks to odin.

[Q] Seeking advice on unrooting and un-TWRP-ing a GT-I9020 Nexus S, back to stock

I've a two-year old Nexus S, which needs to be returned to complete stock, unrooted and un-recovery'd. I didn't root or install the recovery mod myself, so am at a disadvantage when trying to remove it. Guides I've seen for full unrooting seem to rely on a version-specific external file, which seems to usually be 9020A or 9023 - quoting the model number entirely, this is a GT-I9020, nothing more, which seems to render invalid all unrooting/stock-restoring guides I've seen. The phone is still running the official Android, in fact it was factory restored a week ago, and is at version 4.1.3. It's updated a bit since then, possibly including the droid version too.
So my question is how do I go about this? Flashing the wrong version of anything is usually highly unwise, I can't find anything specific for this model, and I don't know enough about the details of the matter to judge what's best to do.
All advice much appreciated.

Shall do then, I need to wait about a week before I can in any case (need the phone as-is for app testing), but that does look promising. I saw it a while after posting, but wasn't sure if it was genuinely as good as claimed, or suitable for this version - I'm very wary of bricking the phone.
Many thanks.

It is genuinely that good if you read the instructions carefully. I use that toolkit myself for more than a year now and I recommend it.
