Weird lag issue - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just picked up a bad esn sprint phone. Its pure stock, locked bootloader and all. I did a couple factory resets. And cant for the life of me figure out whats causing the lag. For a minute or two after boot its tolerable app drawer speed but whenever I open something (any app at all) it will hang anywhere from 5-30 seconds. Then once the app opens it will hang up again. Sometimes popping up the not responding wait or force close box. I hit wait and almost instantly its useable but laggy. Anyone have any ideas

Backup your stuff. Unlock bootloader. Flash factory image. Report back if it solves the problem.

No working pc at the moment. And why should you need to reflash the image on a factory unrooted device. It seems after i clear memory with clean master it speeds right up again for 15-20 minutes. It gets down to 11% available memory. I don't have really anything installed except xda and some tools. My hope for this phone is to try and learn how to port a ROM and want this phone to run smooth pure stock before i start so if it has a lag when i port i will know its my fault. And when flashing stock image can i downgrade without any issues

Factory images are one of the best sources to start afresh. Flashing a factory image (4.1.2 in this case) will wipe EVERYTHING and you will be able check if the lag is still present.
And since, you are working on porting a new ROM which I thing is > 4.1.2, you will not face any downgrading issues.

+1 for cLock weather issue but honestly I'm so thoroughly impressed with this ROM that I only see that as a minor hitch. I really never thought a fully functional JB would make it to the Atrix! Thank you Devs!

Actually there's no specific reason(at least till now) and hence solution for this black screen bug. Some of the guys who have it have reported to come around it by taking out the battery and rebooting until they get rid of it.But again the number of battery pulls varies from just one time for some to about 40 minutes of battery pull for some others. So can't really say if you tried enough or what else might be the solution. This is the situation as is.
Keep trying or wait till it gets fixed there is really nothing else that you can do at the moment.

Is there a way to keep the capacitive key backlight always on? Didn't spot anything in the main thread about this.
What is with this "♫" symbol?? It's very annoying, ugly, and it's everywhere on this ROM. in instagram, when entering passwords, in descriptions of apps in the playstore.
Loving this so far, but I do have a few concerns. I did make sure to install correctly (CM recovery -> wipe data, flash, reboot, flash gapps), but I'm running into some minor issues.
- My phone seems to be sluggish at times, especially noticeable when turning the screen off and when it vibrates (anything that vibrates twice in a short amount of time). There's a good half-second delay with each of these, much slower than on CM10. Is this normal? Other than that it runs pretty quickly.
- This is the more major issue, the alarm. Everything else in the gapps package works properly except for the alarm function of the clock. When an alarm goes off, there's no popup or anything, and pressing power stops the vibration from the alarm, but it doesn't actually turn the sound off. I have to kill the Alarm Klaxon service to shut it off. Any idea what could be causing this? I haven't heard of anyone else with this bug yet.
Will try flashing once again with BMM this time..

Will try with BMM this time along with the patch. Fingers crossed! (I went through the threads and it appeared that people with BMM probably had a greater success rate with installing in the 3rd system - getting superstitious now! )
Will update the results.

Need help flashing the 4.2.2 ROM
My Atrix 2 is on the JB 4.1.2 leak. Model No. ME865. I have ROM Manager installed. I have copied the zipped ROM and GAPPS files to the external memory card. When I boot into Recovery mode, I cannot see any option to Wipe Data / Factory Reset. I am pretty new at this and so if anyone outlines the steps in detail or posts any link to point in me in the right direction, it would help me much. Thanks in advance.

If you are new to flashing ROM's stay away from this because currently a lot of users face black screen issues etc. Also it should not be installed over JB base as well. Read the entire thread from post one till current and you will see for yourself as it will enlighten you on a lot of aspects what people have already tried & which may save you from heartburn. JB gives a great user experience, enjoy it for a while & then get on the bandwagon when you are more of a informed user.

You were right. I watched the video on flashing ROMS from here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kumkZiGbTFI and tried it out. Got the black screen issue when flashing over JB. Then FXZd back to stock ICS and reflashed, but got the same thing again. So i'm back on ICS now. I suppose i'll upgrade to JB later and stay there for a while till this thing is sorted out.
Anyone getting YouTube problems.... Freezing... Could not stream at all with March build.

[Q] Glorious Overdose V5 crashing processes

Downloaded this ROM from the second link. Thought it was a bad download, as it would go through all the setup but it seems to install just fine, but when the phone reboots, the phone process immediately crashes, can't set any accounts (accounts crash), keyboard crashes, etc. Not sure what I'm hitting wrong, I've downloaded it again, wiped cache/reset, wiped dalvik, install just the rom first, set permissions, reboot into recovery, run again, install all software (launcher, factory apps, etc), but they still manage to crash (especially phone so I get no data unless connected to wifi).
Any advice? Thanks in advance
I believe thereis an issue with wifi calling, need to look into this, see if all works when not installing this, well try wiping, flashing rom only, then go back in aroma and flash anything but the removed from stock stuff. Hopefully this will be fixed soon

I absolutely LOVE this rom. I got over the .phone crashing as it doesnt effect me much it seems just crashes twice on start-up and thats it. I didnt download wifi calling and it still crashes for me. But this is seriously otherwise the best rom ive ever used. Many kudos.
Yeah. I'm having the same problem too. Basically, the phone won't work. Everything just crashes. I hope they make a fix really soon. I love this ROM.
I find it weird that GO is the SLOWEST out of any roms I've tried...and even though I don't like it, stock isn't as bad as I thought - just has bad bloat. GO has chrashed even more than stock has, but after I just did a clean stock, its faster and both previous experiences....

Odin back to stock. If it still happens (probably will), it would unfortunately be a hardware issue.

Can you explain better what to do
thank you very much
Sure thing. There is a guide on the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25177681
I would go with option D so you have CWM ready to go when your test is done, but you may want to do option A instead if you want a pure testing ground (no modified kernel).
You may get the rainbow bug with these options, I wouldn't be too concerned about that. Hope this helps.

ok thanks,
then reinstall the cyanofox?
Once you install stock as above, go ahead and test internet ... use facebook, post some instgram photos, et cetera. If that goes without issue, then the problem lay with the software. If it still turns off, then your phone will need servicing.
If it is a software issue, there's a slim if any chance that loading a ROM will continue the good luck. The only chance is if the problem was a bad setting in userdata that stuck around between flashes (that is, if you didn't factory reset between using Cyanofox and trying CM (and other ROMs).

[Q] Bluetooth won't turn on

This morning, when starting my commute to work, I noticed that the S5 wasn't connecting to my BT car stereo. I checked the phone and BT was off. I tapped the icon and it did the slight dimming for a few seconds and then went back to the off state. I opened up BT settings and tapped the slider to turn it on, got the message "Turning on bluetooth", but again, after a few seconds, it returned to the off position.
I'm running the stock ROM, rooted with the hotspot mod, and the restart menu mod.
I tried restarting, powering off and removing battery and restarting, restarting and hitting the BT settings as quickly as possible, but it still will not work. Permissions on /system/vendor/lib/libbt-vendor.so are rw-r--r--, so I don't think it has anything to do with permissions.
I read a thread regarding a different phone and ROM having this problem and they fixed it by flashing a different kernel. Any ideas before I take this route?
EDIT: Just to be sure, I rebooted into recovery and ran fix permissions. No change.
Does anyone have the stock kernel that I can try to flash or Odin? Thought I might give this a try before going with a modded kernel.
Thanks
As much as I hated to do it, a factory reset fixed the problem. Still don't know what actually caused the problem.

Are you going to reflash the mods you were using to see if the problem was the same? Also, you might be able to just make a backup of your system/data/recovery and flash it over so you don't have to factory reset.

I tried the backup, but it brought the problem back as well. Not sure if it was something in the system or days our apps. Still need to do some forensics.
If you flashed off of an SD card, sometimes you can get subtle corruptions? I thought I saw something about it before..

My Nexus 5 Can't sleep/poweroff

Any recommendations?
rma or repair it?

Is it stock or custom ROM ? Some Roms have tweaks to the kernel that may cause issues with the device sleeping or when you turn them off. Depending of it you are stock or running a custom ROM there are several things you can try to eliminate the software as the issue.
Reinstall using one of the nexus toolkits to download and flash the official Google sick image replacing the partitions, boot loader etc.
Use a different ROM and try your luck.
