Blinkfeed - English topics? - HTC One E8

Hi,
I have a grey E8 in the UK. Generally I like it. It has some annoying usability issues - e.g. WAY too much in the status bar, and Blinkfeed renders in English but only shows Chinese topics?
Has anyone figured out how to get Blinkfeed to connect to a different set of content? I know I can add a RSS feed manually but this is not the same and doesn't seem to integrate with "Highlights" etc. There is no "Location" setting in Blinkfeed like there used to be (at least I remember this from M7 and maybe M8)?
I have tried to downgrade the Blinkfeed APK as I notice that the version on the device is > the version on the Play Store, but no luck.
Thanks!

Same issues as you. Also i have grey E8 and in the UK

Hi,
I'm from spain and I'm very interested on this phone.
Could you tell me where do you buy it? Maybe on a chinese web like etotalk?
Thnx

If they can get blinkfeed to run on other platforms must be possible to get running on this device?

No - as I said in the post, I have already tried this. The Blinkfeed version on the phone is newer than the one in the Play Store - which is perhaps the issue. Either way, If I try to install blinkfeed it says "Install failed".

You obviously didn't read the thread very carefully. the version in that thread has been patched. I have been able to successfully install on my E8, just cannot get the feeds to update.

I finaly managed to get dutch feeds in Blinkfeed.
What I did:
1. unlock the phone (see www.htcdev.com)
2. flash TWRP and rooted (http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-e8/development/twrp-recovery-e8dual-sim-root-included-t2819571)
3. gain s-off (http://theroot.ninja/)
4. write Super CID (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317536)
5. modify build.prop (you can find build.prop in "/system"). Set ro.product.locale.language=nl & ro.product.locale.region=NL (I found these records twice in build.prop and I changed both)
6. go to play store, remove Blinkfeed and then reinstall Blinkfeed.
I now have local news and/or feeds in dutch on my HTC One E8 (m8sw), you can probably get them in any language you like.

Hi,
This is my first time to modify my phone. Could you please tell me which model of HTC do you choose in the 1 step. I don't see HTC one E8 in the list of HTC phone.
Thanks,

@Rosicky: Just choose: Other supported phone or some thing similar.

There's more than one way to do it, but I did it using ES File Explorer.
You'll find build.prop by going all the way to the root of your filesystem and then enter the system folder (/system).
When you scroll down you'll find build.prop. Open it using ES notepad (or whatever is the name your local language).
Open the menu in the top right corner and choose "modify" (or whatever it says in your local language).
Find the records ro.product.locale.language & ro.product.locale.region and enter the right codes for your country and language.
Afterwards I had local feeds in Blinkfeed (I had to manualy delete the old chinese content though).

Try to get iGo started on HTC one S

Hello together,
i tryed without success to get iGO started on my htc one S. The last weeks i read a lot of howtos and information
but i was not able to fix the problem. As i know i have to install it on the internal sdcard and put all
program files and folders also into a folder in the root directory on the sdcard called "iGo".
When try to start the app iGO it just says "iGO is loading" and a black screen is shown.
It look like the app is running but it shows only a black screen.
Maybe the "sys" file has the wrong solution setting and it cant show the gui?
Thanks for any help!
Read this somewhere - you need to edit the sys.txt on the phone (/data/data/com.navngo.javaclient/...) and this requires root.
The following settings are working fine, nothing else needs to be changed - just pick the one which suits you.
- notification bar still visible
[rawdisplay]
driver=engine
screen_x=896
screen_y=504
screen_x2=540
screen_y2=856
screen_xy="960_540:896x504/540x856"
- notification bar obscured (full screen for IGO)

screen_y=540
screen_x2=540
screen_y2=896

Hi, yes it can be fixed the voice issue. First of all, have you used my kit? Or another? Second, what voice do you want to use?
About the small part of the screen, after 1st start won't appear that anymore. If it still does probably you're not using my kit, or, you can change the sys.txt values.

Have you used my kit? if not, means that you are using another version which doesn't allow you to modify some contents. Or, you can take from my kit the license folder and add it to your's (if you have root access - if you don't, use my kit, it will work).

What you posted here worked for me like 5 minutes. After that I get the message "Please insert igo primo SD card" no amount of reinstalls is helping to resolve this. The problem started when I tried to add maps for another country, different voices and speedcams but later I deleted the whole package and restored from your original one - still the same error. Even deleted device.nng as suggested in another guide. Thanks in advance.

Mate, the kit doesn't have any problem . You've messed up something over there.
- First of all, you are trying to use igo with sdcard mounted on PC? (Igo search the sdcard, and if it's mounted it won't work)
- Please be SURE that igo folder is on the root of sdcard memory and not duplicated (igo/igo/content - it should be only igo/content)
- Please be SURE that you didn't changed the sys.txt file; if you did, please send me what you've modified to see what's happenin';
- the maps, speedcams, and so on has nothing to do with the contents; that error appears because igo search the igo/content folder and cannot find it (the path that it's looking for is: sdcard/igo/content and you probably have sdcard/igo/igo/content)

[APP][4.0] Google Now for ICS Installer/Restorer [flashable Aroma Zip]

The Google Now Installer/Restorer v1.1
Purpose
There have been a lot of users with issues installing and uninstalling Google Now for ICS. This is my solution for those users.
This is only an installer for the many different variations of Google Now that were created in this news worthy thread: The Google Now for ICS Project
This installer allow user of different types of roms and devices to quickly install Google Now to see if it works for them and if it does not, it allows these users to restore their original Google Search.
This thread is not and will not be about issues with specific modded Google Now apks, go here: The Google Now for ICS Project for that. I have no problem incorporating new apks into the installer. But I will not attempt to deal with issues outside of the installer.
Testing(Green = working, Red = not working)
(Need more people to test as many different devices, roms, and recoveries)
Devices
HTC EVO 3D
HTC EVO 4g LTE
Roms
OTA_Shooter_ICS_35_S_Sprint_WWE_2.89.651.2-2.17.651.5
Tranquility rls1b
Recoveries
CWM 5.0.2.0
TWRP s-on
So if you experience any issues, I will attempt to help, but understand that I if you are not setup the exact same, I may not know what is wrong.
Touch recovery is not active in this aroma installer, so use up and down to make a selection and the power button to confirm the selection.
Requirements
Rooted
ICS
CWM (only recovery tested, others may work, you let me know)
Instructions(should already know this, but here you go)
1. Transfer .zip to the root of your sd card
2. Boot into recovery
3. Select "install zip from sdcard"
4. Select "choose zip from sdcard"
5. Select "GoogleNowforICSInstaller_v1.0.zip"
6. Select "Install GoogleNowforICSInstaller_v1.0.zip"
Once the installer is up, the rest should be self explanatory, if not just follow the prompts.
I hope this helps someone.

I havent been following google now lately, but it seems that you're using stock rooted ics on evo where this works. is this also true for touchwiz phones?

edit: there may be an issue with the Installer not finding the original Google Search apk, someone posted this and basically it states that you may have a some extra characters at the end of the apk.

I don't think it has anything to do with sense or touchwiz, the modified Google Now was modded for AOSP, which doesn't have either, but has worked on HTC and Samsung.

Since it won’t let me post to the forum I thought I would just do it this way. On my Verizon S3 I’m rooted, unlocked, OTA kernel, running a stockish rom (cleanrom) and CMW 6.0.1.2. The installer said it worked but it broke Google search. In the installer it said everything was fine but nope. I went to do the restore and it said it couldn’t find the backup so I went with the one provided and that worked fine. When setting up I chose the first one which I think was v7 for arm7. If I chose wrong I’ll try again but otherwise I’ll just wait for an updated version. Unlike others I’m in no hurry and was just testing it out on my phone. If you want more info I can try to install it again and try to provide whatever you might need or want.

What do you mean by it broke Google Search (what were the indications that it did not work)?
When you restored did Google Search work again?
Check if you hae the follow "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk" in your "/system/app"
Are there other files with this same name?

How much space does it state that you have free in the /system directory?
It would seem that you don't have enough space in your /system directory of your internal memory.
One thing to try to see if this is the case, when you do it manually, don't modify or add any files to /system/usr/srec/ directory

Yes I have that GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk in /system/app and yes it is without the _usa after it. On the line under it it has the odex version. Then the Google search widget apk and odex. It is this way with before and after I try to install.
Just tried it again choosing mikeyxda v7 it says created backup ok and return status 0. Google now installed return status 0 once the phone boots up it says “unfortunately, Google search has stopped”. I also get that message no matter how i try to search or tap on the google app it puts on it. Double checked the permissions from the main thread and all permissions are set right, if that helps. Went to restore and it says I never backed it up but I can use the generic one which I select and get again return status 0 for everything and once the phone comes back up Google search works just fine again. Hope this helps.

That's good to know. I see that the problem has to do with your system being odexed.
The reason it FCs is because when replacing the Google Search apk there is no matching modified odex.
This is modified for deodexed roms.
Check on this thread and ask about a modified odexed velvet.apk and velvet.odex

I'm using GN on an odexed ICS ROM, no problems. Just had to delete the *.odex files for the apk's that the installer replaces.

workaround for crashing links (build.prop)

Hello,
as many may have noticed with the new stock ICS ROM there are some issues regarding links, e.g. WhatsApp crashes if you click on a link etc. and there is a quick fix/workaround for it (you need write access to /system however).
Investigating the crash report it became clear that the issue is related to the Htc Linkify Dispatcher which was (as I understand it) implemented by HTC to comply with some apple patent-related stuff and to strip the device of Android's original abilities regarding the handling of links (more info e.g. on [1] )
So normally the device will have a running Htclinkifydispatcher.apk and in addition a build.prop setting indicating this "feature". With the ICS ROM however the build.prop says that the feature is enabled but a quick check in /system shows that the Htclinkifydispatcher.apk is not installed, so consequently this means that apps relying on build.prop will fail when handling links (as the dispatcher is not active).
The logical solution seems to be to adapt the build.prop accordingly. After a quick search I found the necessary steps to be the following (Source: [2]):
In the /system/build.prop file search for ro.da1.enable=true and set it to ro.da1.enable=false
Add ro.da1.method=false directly under it
Reboot
I performed these steps and now am able to click on links in WhatsApp again without crashes. Maybe this will help someone else as well.
Cheers

yes this is the exact problem i encountered, in every apps except internet.. -.-
thanks!
nice guide everything ok now! :victory:
Thanks for this workaround. However I noticed that I no longer have an option called something like "Aplications associations" under Settings menu. It was just below "Applications"... Do you think is related to the modification?
I think yes...
From what I have understood reading
[1] commonsware.com / blog / 2012 / 07 / 23 / linkify-problem-patent-behavior . html
the Apple patent is that when you click on a link (or something recognised usefull data...) a popup menu appear letting you choose what to do.
HTC removes that ability and using Htclinkifydispatcher.apk with "Application Association" gives you the choice (but only one...) of what to do on a specific type of link.
Since the workaround we are talking here needs rootted phones, could be also another solution to put in /system/app the Htclinkifydispatcher.apk and leaves build.prop as it is (to stop crash on link) ?

thanks for this, it works
where can we get the correct htclinkifydisptcher.apk that will work on the stock desire s ics rom?
can you post a link please
I don't have a link but you could try to extract the apk from any HTC ICS sense 4 original rom.
Anyway, I read in an other discussion that also with this apk there are some limits and then the mod of build.prop it is the better solution.
Who's awesome? You are
Worked for me! Thanks dude!

I specifically rooted and unlocked my phone to do this as it was annoying as hell!
Thanks! :good:
You have unlocked the bootloader via HTC? If yes, after that what Guide for rooting have you used? I'm in the same situation as you are, I'm doing this only for the links. Stupid Apple patent! Also, if I un-root / re-lock the bootloader, the change remains? If I re-lock, would it show "Locked" or "Re-locked"?
Yes, unlocked via HTC-Dev. Can't remember the guide I used as I looked at a few for it to make sense to me.
In short, Unlocked boot loader, flashed ClockWorkMod recovery, then flashed super user. - You will have to find the guide that works best for you.
I have left it unlocked, but if you do re-lock it will say - Re-Locked, SECURITY WARNING. Nothing to worry about, just that HTC will know you have unlocked your device if you ever send it in for repair, not a problem for me as my phone is over a year old now.
I did notice though that if you DO re-lock the bootloader and try to edit the Build-Prop, it will always revert back to what it was before.
I had to leave it unlocked to edit it, and I haven't re-locked it.

All I did was put superuser on the SD card, then installed the superuser zip via clockworkmod recovery, worked a charm. Anything else you will have to search the forum as I just jumped through a few threads to get the best method for me.
All the answers are in the forums
Thanks man.

o-> you can click on number in SMS message and this number automatically get transfered to dialer, so you can call it, or store to your contacts
o-> moar and moar, i have tried these two, because it was quite serious bug for me
thank you. Htc evo 3d with coolsense rom here had same problem that fixed it
Thx! this solved my problem!

before you do anything, back up everything that can be backed up, such as contact, smses, APN settings and apps if possible.
after that, change the sd card with a blank one (this isn't necessary, but just to ensure that you will not erase your current sd card and the files inside it)
1. unlock the bootloader (follow the steps closely and also install all necessary files as mentioned in the instructions)
2. download necessary custom recovery (4EXT is what i recommend) and SU zip files, put in the root of the blank SD card (that is, not inside any folder, for the sake of convenience)
3. boot into recovery (can be done in several ways, easiest one is power+vol down and get to recovery from bootloader screen, but remember to turn off fastboot in settings)
4. flash the custom recovery first. Once finished, my suggestion is turn off the phone
5. boot into recovery again, it should now be the custom one
6. flash the SU zip..
7. done, you are now rooted with stock ROM
experts please feel free to add on or correct any mistakes..
sorry if I got off track a little, just want to offer some help because I'm in a good mood today..

Here's what you need to do.
Assuming that you have already rooted your device, use any file explorer app and go to 'etc' folder of your device. (I used Root Explorer and did this on my Samsung Galaxy Tab N8000).
In 'etc' folder, locate the file called hosts.
Touch/press and hold the icon of the file to get its context menu and open the file in text editor.
In the file, there will be one IP address to the localhost, i.e. 127.0.0.1. Leave this as it is.
There will be a second IP address which may vary depending upon your region or country. Put a # in front of it. (eg. #245.45.14.14). This will mark this entry as a comment and the device won't read it.
(I would suggest that you backup 'hosts' file before making any changes. In my case, a 'hosts.bak' file was automatically created when I saved the file after editing.)
Save the file and reboot your device.
This should resolve the issue.

That's really strange. You should be able to edit the file as rooting process needs a reboot too. Well you can still try a workaround.
* Copy all the contents from the existing host file.
* Create a new file either on your smartphone or use a computer to do so. Make sure the name of the file is 'host' (without quotes) and file does not have any extension like .txt or .doc. If the file has any extension, remove it while rename the file.
* Now paste all the copied contents from the existing file to the new one and then make the changes as I mentioned in my answer.
* Save the file and replace it with the existing one.
Let me know if this helps.
Thank You

[Q] DROID3 XT862 for pageplus and T-Mobile

Hi,
The system version is 5.7.906.XT862.Verizon.en.US
It was unlocked, rooted and installed root explorer ready to modify to work with US GSM ( Lycamobile also)
Here is where I got info to follow
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1989359
However, I have some concerns need help
1- will the instruction and the first build.prop file in the above link will work with my phone?
2- Can I use the phone with both pageplus ( being flashed with TalkForGood) and T-Mobile ( Lycamobile later)? I saw the same question without answer here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1425519
3- Can I use the phone oversea as a global phone without a need to follow the above link in Non-US GSM Networks session?
4- In case I want to go back stock image ( revert to the original one after messing it up), how?
To Skreelink, thank for your instruction but can you or anyone show me where to do the "required options" part because I simply couldn't find what you mentioned in my phone under Wireless & Network setting -> Mobile Network.
( I tried to post this under the above post but couldn't)

1: The link you provided is my information and files for KEXEC ROMs, such as CM10.2 or AOKP. For the stock rom (As you listed 906), you will want to go here.
2: If you flash the XT883 radio for US GSM networks (like T-Mobile) you will not be able to flip between them via software toggle, you will have to flash the stock radio + swap build.prop back to stock and OTA on PagePlus, vice versa when you want to use the other network. (I wanted the same thing, I solved it by getting a Motorola Razr M XT907). The main reason for this is; The XT883 radio expects an RUIM card (CDMA version of SIM) and without it, puts it in emergency only mode. Verizon/PagePlus/Sprint/other US CDMA networks do not use the RUIM so no real way around this.
3: To use it as a global phone, just restore the stock radio and build.prop, it should work without issue WITHOUT MODIFICATION, as long as you have input the SIM unlock code to unlock the phone. You *can* use the XT883 radio globally, but both radios will work for global GSM.
4: To return to stock, follow this thread.
thank you

If the permissions are not sticking, then the app you're using either does not have root privledges, is not performing correctly, or your root isn't correct. Try updating your superuser binary via the superuser app. Although, rw-r--r-- should be just fine, 777 would 'pose' a security threat since it would allow any app to modify it. Long as you replace it with the one required for GSM, rw-r--r-- permissions should work.

Sorry, didn't see this until now... getting the Razr M on pageplus is a real pain, though T-Mobile would be simple. It's a matter of getting the computer to read the diag port (you have to manually select the driver) and simply editing ONE NV-Item, then any GSM sim will work (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc).
Here is one of my posts with a quick guide about unlocking a razr m for gsm.
THANK YOU

The Droid 3 requires flashing the radio and build.prop to swap between CDMA/GSM
UNLESS it it is a foreign GSM network like Rogers in Canada, then the stock radio works without modification. The XT907 Razr M can do a software toggle between them (Network mode under Mobile Networks like the D3) but setting up PagePlus requires a lot of work for data, though GSM is a lot easier to get working than the D3. You can still go ahead and activate the D3 on pageplus, just after you flash between radios, you have to OTA program each time.
question for help

Thank you.
I think I can do the same process with the image file from the original and overwrite the build.prop with original.
I did back up the build.prop but not the radio.img
Where can I find the Droid 3 radio.img of 906 version?
I want it simple as a reverting from what I did because I already removed all Verizon apps and install my apps in the current image.
A recovery task can bring back the original image.
** Oversea I meant is Vietnam
Thank again,

Sorry it took me so long, I had a long hectic day, but Here it is.
Just flash it like you did the XT883 radio and put a stock build.prop in (you should have backed up the original). Then you should be able to OTA program with *228 if it's activated on pageplus.
THANK YOU
