Hi all,
I'm continuing to keep myself busy creating more custom watchface designs whilst I'm in between jobs and am keen to get your feedback on the following animated gears/cogs watchface design that I created. I'm quite happy with the end result and am keen to make some more but before I invest more time in them I'd like to know what you think? I believe it's the first of its type for the Sony SmartWatch 2 as it runs as a proper low-power enabled watch/clock widget rather than an app.
Video of the animation (only whilst the screen of the watch is on):

No links posted as it will be one of my paid watchfaces as I've spent a lot of time working on this one (...and I don't have a job at the moment so every little bit helps...)
All feedback welcome! (don't forget to vote in the poll at the top of the page)
Excellent work dude. Marvelous Would you be able to make the watch face little smaller at the bottom or on the top so that other widgets like battery and weather can also be added or is it easy to embed them in your watch face?

Hi, thanks for the feedback. I've had this type of feedback from a few people about all of my watchfaces. Unfortunately with the relatively low resolution of the Sony SmartWatch 2 screen (220x176) it doesn't do well in displaying my watchfaces when scaled down to smaller sizes. Even when it takes the full 5x5 grid I need to do a lot of tweaking to get it to display clearly to make the watchface actually functional (i.e. you can read the time and the date). In terms of embedding widgets into the watchface - this isn't something that I know how to do as it is beyond my technical coding capabilities. For the meantime I suggest that people install the hack so that they can overlay other widgets on top of the watchface.
Originally I felt that it would be cool to have lots of the widgets on my watch, but after a while I realised that I didn't really need them as I could always turn the watch on to access the apps. I found that they cluttered the screen and detracted from being able to see a nice watchface design. That's why my watchface designs are based mostly on utilising the full 5x5 grid size.
Thanks for the immediate response dude. After reading your message, I now started to realise that I don't really use all the widgets as you said. All we need is a good looking watch face that make our watch looks great and is not memory or battery hungry. I will look forward to see the final version of your watch face to buy. Good luck with the project.

Hi, no unfortunately not else that would open a lot of opportunities. It's manually coded in to rotate the gears.
That's great idea :good:
let me guess, you've used the seconds view to make the gears movable

Yep exactly right! You can potentially use this technique to do other types of animation.
Seems pretty neat dude, Ill definitely have to check this out
Like it, I'd purchase but it would have to look bigger. Wouldn't be interested in using any widgets with that watch face so make it bigger. Lose the border & push it out to the edges of the screen & you've got a sale.
Julian, great design, just purchased design #1, which was my wife and daughter favorite. One request? Would it make the hour and minute hands easier to see with a bit darker outline? I realize complications like open face are usually harder to read and the SW2 screen isn't very sharp by design, but it may still make it easier to see the hour and minute hands to tell time. Just a thought, and again, thanks for making the watch even better!

When you say lose the border, do you also mean the border that currently has the roman numerals in it? I can make the hour markers float on top instead...

For example the gold style. Remove the gold border around the edge & push the minute/seconds markers right to the edge of the screen.

Well for one thing it is much easier to quickly glance at a watch then to have to dig your phone out of your pocket, bag, desk, or where ever you have it safely tucked away at.
from what i remember STORM London used to have that kind of futuristic ****ed up designs got some watches from there but cant realy recommend since customer support and/or warranty conditions are like next to none. But should do as for the looks.
Why are there so many lame watch faces on the gear app store! I don't want much, just a simple watch face with all black background and a decent ambient mode. Most are over complicated trash. There are a few good ones out there there but the ambient mode is the standard got and minute hand.
I had a go at the watch face maker application on a Mac but I haven't got time to pay around with it.
I like the modern utility face from Samsung but wish the ambient mode had the hour markets at least.
I'm sticking with tuner military face
Look at "Nice Gear S2" in the store - more than 10,000 users (Apr.16) can not be wrong ...

I have to agree with you. It surprises me how bad so many of them are. Fortunately you case use Gear Watch Designer to make you own, including ambient mode.
Check out "Blue Stealth 12hr" on the app store. It's the one I use. But yes, so many poorly designed faces out there.

If you can, do what i do and resort to making your own watch faces. Its a bit of fun and rewarding too.
The Gear S suffered from the same lack of watch faces. My biggest problem is with the ambient mode, which is utter garbage. When I moved over to the LG Urbane I realized how much I was missing (hundreds of full color ambient faces that lasts almost 2 days). I really hope Samsung will start making android wear watches again.

I was very specific. Lack of full display color ambient watch faces is my problem. I know there are hundreds of great watch faces for the S2, but they all look absolutely horrible in ambient. My bigger gripe is that this is a stupid software issue that should have been corrected since the S1.

The face just got updated today. I had requested he make it harder to "accidentally" change the color of the face. Now it isn't as easy to end up with a hot pink background when you just wanted black. At least the author is responsive.

I have the same desire and found "Mercan: Muti-Functional Watch" yesterday. I am quite liking it. Battery level, steps, and calendar all have shortcuts to the appropriate places. Very bright and easy to read. To my way of thinking the ambient mode is good as well though I don't use it. I have attached a pic.

What I am mainly concerned about is all the copyright and trademark infringements going on in the market. You can't put Family Guy on a watch face, slap a digital clock on it, call it your own, and sell it for $2. You have to own the rights. Also, no one can use official Superhero logos and profit unless you own the rights to them as well.
This will hurt the Gear S2. When the companies who own the trademarks complain, the faces will be stripped from the market. Consumers who purchased them will no longer be able to download and install them. They will get angry at Samsung and Gear Apps as a whole, hurting sales... A market in its infancy like this should be more careful. By individuals releasing faces on the market like this they are also smacking other designers and developers in the face... Smacking down the integrity of whole "design process" really...
Is there an app for Gear S2 watch faces similar to Android Wear watchmaker. It is the only app I use on my Moto 360 gen 1. Just ordered refurbished Gear S2 for $140 via BB on Ebay offer.
Looking forward to it to complement my Moto 360 and Note 5.

Hi all,
My all time favourite watch was this:
http://www.tokyoflash.com/en/watch_museum/s-mode/oberonss/
People used to stop me in the street to ask how it worked. Trying to work out the time when drunk was impossible but I loved it. Unfortunately, I lost it on holiday last year and the company do not make it any more, so I have purchased a Gear S2 in the hope that somebody out there might be able to create a watchface that replicates what it does?
I am more than happy to pay for this work. If you are able to help, perhaps you could message me to arrange?
Thanks in advance!!

i looked at this watch and am interested in creating it for the gear s2. my thought is that it would be more intuitive if the time rings progressed as follows:
(example time 3:25)
outer ring = hour, so 3 dots
middle ring = tens of minutes, so 2 dots
inner ring = final minute digit (0-9), so 5 dots
in the video from your link the middle and inner links are reversed, which is a bit confusing. as a previous owner would you agree?
Hi, and thanks for replying. I couldn't agree with you more about the dots being in the wrong order. I got used to it over the years, but to have them follow a natural order would be better. Do you think you can do this?
it is a pretty unusual watch face which i like. i've done several requests that are now in the gear store but this one will really test my skill level. the animation part will be a significant challenge.
i am going to give this a try.
You sir, are my hero
Please advise of anything I can do, testing etc. As stated above, also happy to pay you for your time, as this will make me so happy!!
If animation proves difficult, even just the ability to display the time this way would be incredible.

working thru the design phase, i believe the reason that the original oberon watch rings were ordered hour/minutes/ tens of minutes was due to the look for times that ended in 6-9. the middle ring would then be longer than the inner ring. this probably looks better.
for example 10:47
outer ring 10 dots
middle ring 7 dots
inner ring 4 dots
this provides a more symetrical look, but i still think the way i am proposing makes more sense even though it may not be as asthetically pleasing
outer ring 10 dots
middle ring 4 dots
inner ring 7 dots
not as symetrical, but easier to tell time. i am more inclined to this method rather than the original. your thoughts?
That sounds perfect

watch face to display TIME is done. running on my s2 3g now, looks good. takes a bit to get used to reading time in this format. very unconventional.
next will try to get initial animation sequence to work which would really make it look more gooder.
don't think date will work out. i use Gear Watch Designer as the dev tool which is ok but is still beta, so there is no ability to include a function to double press side button and activate DATE like the original watch.

i've got 2 easter eggs on the current version. touching just below the 12o'clock position opens S-Voice and just above the 6o'clock position opens Timer (i use these 2 functions routinely; they can be hard coded to open whatever). there isn't a whole lot of real estate on the face so these spots are invisible.
there is enough room in the middle for maybe 2 items so let me know exactly what you want.

Only really the battery percentage would be useful for me, and also the date in "xx mon" format if possible??
Sorry, also a notification indicator if possible????
ya notifications. GWD doesn't allow that. I and many others have been badgering the Samsung programmers to include notifications in the development tool. maybe in a future revision.
I will add battery and date in the requested format.
Here's the deal. Tomorrow is out so i will submit the binary to samsung for certification on monday. they are fairly backlogged; i have several other submissions in limbo and it's been a week now. it's possible the oberon watchface will be available by the end of the week but don't hold your breath. i'll let you know the name of the watchface once sammy certifies it. the proposed cost will be 2USD. if i can get the initial animation sequence puzzle solved, it will be available as an update in the future (i presume at no charge unless sammy does something odd).

I would be happy to share it with a few people in exchange for useful feedback even though it has already been approved for sale in the app store. Just add in your comment if you are interested and I will get it to you. Just looking for general constructive feedback though.
Just for clarity, the bottom left is the imperial emblem and doubles as the battery meter. the light saber is the second hand and sweeps smoothly, the destroyer is at the back of the minute hand.... then the date bottom middle and MPH on bottom right..... that's about it I think.... it will have additional colors on first update.
That looks sweet!

I really like it. I would suggest maybe a different placement of the star destroyer. At first glance it could look like a strange nose on Vader possibly. Overall though I think it looks really good, nice job

Thanks guys for the positive words... It means a lot to have some feedback after working on something like this that is a lot more work than it probably looks like. Once it clears the final testing stage I will try to contact the couple people who posted to see if you would like to have the face for yourself. Thanks again!
Yeah, I like it too. Very cool.
I agree, putting the destroyer at the end of the lightsaber is a little distracting. I think I'd put it over on the right, opposite the death star, maybe with some Tie-fighters, and just make the back side of the hands the lightsaber handles.
And/or bring Vader's mouth out a little more - seems too dark. Like in this picture:
http://assets2.ignimgs.com/2015/08/...-arms-1280jpg-88461e1280wjpg-67c0c2_1280w.jpg
Maybe change MPH to heart rate, or at least make it an option. Speedometer seems a little like a novelty for a watch for me - I personally wouldn't need it on my face for access at all times.
Just some ideas - but nice job!
Hey guys thanks again for the comments, i am going to take everything said into account on the first update. If anybody wants the face, i posted some coupons in the main section, general or whatever it's called. Thanks agn.
Hey all,
Upgraded from the S2 to the S3, and so far it's exactly what I have been looking for in a smart watch (have a 2nd gen Moto as well). The always on face is almost indistinguishable from the regular one I am using ("Frontier") which is really what I've been looking for, a watch that LOOKS like a watch.
Anyone have any recommendations on good analog faces with good AOD? I really like the S2 Urban, but the AOD stunk. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Does your watch still dime the screen?
Although I notice that it remains on (different from my old S2 that changes for another simplified face), it still dimmers a lot even if I set the auto dimmer to off.
Dim the screen? I am using the stock face now, and it works great. The AOD was so good I was showing a friend and we were staring at it thinking it was the active one. THAT'S what I am looking for, a watch that looks like a watch and acts like a watch. The stock ones don't allow too much customization, and I am still looking for an after market.
I have the same 'problem' . I love some watch faces like Breitling or panerai, but the aod is terrible. Not at all like the stock watch face.
http://apps.samsungapps.com/gear/appDetail.as?appId=com.watchface.NEON
The watchface itself is cool but I think the AOD is even better. The colors are great. Really cool neon glow.

Have you started playing with Gear Watch Designer yet? Once you get used to it, it's pretty easy, and simple to make your AOD look as good as you want!
Well... only catch is, GWD 1.3.0 won't let it look TOO good - if you use too many pixels you can't install it! But with 1.2.1, you're good to go. See my thread for a bunch I and others have created. Here's a Breitling one with an AOD that will even work in 1.3.0:

Well... only catch is, GWD 1.3.0 won't let it look TOO good - if you use too many pixels you can't install it! But with 1.2.1, you're good to go. See my thread for a bunch I and others have created. Here's a Breitling one with an AOD that will even work in 1.3.0:

Yeah, i installed it yesterday! Have got a few new watch faces installed to my gear . I love the yellow Breitling, but the aod is not as great as for example the stock one.
I downloaded also als few which gave me the warning about the pixelratio when i wanted to push the wf to my gear. These faces couldt be installed do i have to downgrade to 1.21 ?
Kind greetings

Yup - that's the 1.3.0 problem. Go to 1.2.1 and you'll be fine.
Which yellow Breitling are you talking about? The digital one? Maybe 1.3.0 created an AOD that complies (< 15% pixel ratio), but if you make it in 1.2.1, it's fine. If somehow the file you has includes a bad AOD, go to Project, Always On State, delete both. Then re-create it. And/or, just go to the top right corner of GWD and click Always-on, high color, and then add the yellow face manually.
Of course, it will use battery faster, but that should be our decision!
Yeah, this is it ! Thanks mate!!

Hey all,
Upgraded from the S2 to the S3, and so far it's exactly what I have been looking for in a smart watch (have a 2nd gen Moto as well). The always on face is almost indistinguishable from the regular one I am using ("Frontier") which is really what I've been looking for, a watch that LOOKS like a watch.
Anyone have any recommendations on good analog faces with good AOD? I really like the S2 Urban, but the AOD stunk. Any ideas?
Thanks!

I think the Watchmaster app is great. All watches support full AOD displays. Just don't try to use it with very bright colors. Somehow they cause display errors.

Thanks. I guess I'm looking in the wrong places, most of the AOD displays are really bad (look nothing like the actual face). For me, it's more about a watch that looks like a watch all the time, so I am willing to stock with a black face with minimal color (to keep them as close as possible).
