CM11s OTA and Custom Recovery - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm sorry for posting the same question in two different places (at the OnePlus forum and here).
It's not that I am impatient, but it's just so hard to get any straight answers over there.
Maybe someone here can help with this...
Well my device arrived yesterday and so far it is working very well.
I did the first OTA before doing anything else to the device and it went without any problem.
The only thing that really bothers me is that a couple of people wrote that they bricked their device after the OTA, when the device was unlocked and had a custom recovery installed (and was rooted, eventhough I don't think that could cause any problems).
So the question is, and I think it is a really important one...
Do CM11s OTA updates work with a custom recovery installed (twrp in my case)?
Should people flash the original, stock recovery via fastboot if they want to use the CM11s OTA update service?
And if that is the case...It is recommended, for people who do not want the stock recovery, to just go ahead and flash the the CM11 nightly (regular CM), to not receive any OTA updates?
I would really appreciate an answer to these questions.
Thanks in advance.
Ps. The problem was already mentioned at the cyanogen forum (and a couple of other places), but didn't get an answer.

Updating ROM with CWM just reverts to menu?

Hey,
I'm trying to install the [ROM] Team Tiamat Xoom Rom 2.2.2 - Moray [9/10/11].
I've got CWM installed (version recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm.img but also tried latest version from ROM Manager).
Each time i try to install the .zip it get's to opening package and then just exits to the CWM menu?
It's probably a common thing, but couldn't find anything from a search? Anyone got any ideas?
This has been covered many times so take the time to do a search.

I had to thank you Muffycheeks for your excellent answer. I am not sure why you did not at least give an indication about where to find the answer or what the issue is? Lucky this was posted in Q&A and not in the dev thread!
I am new to Xoom (only got it since yesterday) and have managed to get the bootloader unlocked and custom recovery installed. For some reason when I reboot the device the recovery is flash back to 3e (I suppose this has been also debated millions of times but I cannot find it yet...)
I had been able to flash one of the custom roms but it gets stuck in bootscreen. I wiped everything I could think of and followed a couple of advices and still not working.
I am downloading the other rom (as far as I can tell there are only 2 customs with one of them based on the other one) and will see if that works.
Sorry Addicteddddd for highjacking your thread but I have been searching for a while until I found your thread and I thought my issues were over to find the standard helpful XDA answer. Some people might have had their device for years but some other are quite new to this.
K.
EDIT: It seems that one of the recoveries do not advise if a ZIP file is bad and therfore comes back with no message. I suppose this is why this is happening.
I downloaded 3 ZIP files and they are all corrput. Not sure what is happening here but anyway.

I don't know if you used this guide but there is a bit of discussion of some issues regarding cwm recovery versions and some pitfalls while trying to flash.Check it out if you haven't
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249798
Also, how are you downloading the file? Are you getting the right version? If you are using the R4c v3.2.0.0 it should be called solarnz, not tiamat. The guide has the correct link.

[Q] (Q) Is it safe to do this?

I just downloaded a rom for my phone, Galaxy Y. The rom already had OTA (I believe it means Over the Air Updates), from 1-7. When flashing them, should I flash them one by one then restart my phone or can I flash one then flash another before I restart?
By the time this has been answered, I probably already have flashed them one by one (then restart). But thanks anyway for any answers since I think I'll be checking a lot of roms.
You can flash both but understand that one will write over the other so make sure to back it up and flash either the suggested ota rom or the one you found. If something goes wrong? The backup will put you back as you were before the rom flash.
Why not see for the answer in the rom thread?
I guess it has been answered several times in that thread if you are talking about evo x3.

[Q] Need help rooting, unlocking BL and flashing - new R HD owner!

Hello, chaps! So, I've just got a XT925 and, basically, what I want is to get to CM11. I'm used to CM features and I'm sure this little beast runs even better on KK than it does on stock JB
I was looking for guides and stickies to read through, but there isn't much, really... Why is that? I need help rooting, unlocking the bootloader, flashing recovery and the ROM itself, but I'm far from a complete noob and the guides are enough for me, but I can't find them Could anyone point me in the right direction?
Also, I've got a couple questions about CM11 I'm planning to run the 3.0 kernel CM11 version until KK OTA shows up and I'll see where to go from there. How good is the CM11 on RAZR HD? Is there a list of known bugs? And does the HDMI port work? I find it to be a cool feature, although I don't use it often... Would be nice if it works on CM11, too. And the camera, how's it on CM11? I love the 60fps video recordings and hope that photo quality is at least the same, because it really isn't too great on stock JB :/ Using 3rd party camera apps helps to a degree...
Any help, info and answers would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance!
Cheers

Completely missed it... A great post, love it! Question about bootloader unlocking, though - there's the motocalypse way and there's the official way? Or is the official method not available anymore? Any reason why one is better than the other?
And the questions about CM11 remain :

The official BL unlock is still available as far as I know, but its not available for all phones. You basically have to try it to know if it will work.
I think the official way is reversible, it has always been said motopocalypse is not. Those facts may be wrong though. There was discussion about it in one of the threads but I don't recall exactly what was stated. If you don't care about ever locking it back, it wouldn't be relevant then.
About cm, I still have my rmhd but haven't used it other than for testing since last year. So I can't provide any current help on that, sorry.

Just go to the Motorola web site and look for the unlocking program and attempt it there. Here is the link: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-b
You'll have to either sign in with your Google+ ID or register an account with Motorola. It's free and then you can attempt to unlock your phone.
The XT925's are always unlockable since they are not in the US. It's Verizon that won't allow it and the XT926s are US phones.
Okay, guys, I've ran into some problems :/
Current status: bootloader loads fine, CWM (6.0.4.4, touch version) loads fine, but the system wouldn't boot after making a backup. I've tried flashing CM11 (cm-11-20140710-NIGHTLY-moto_msm8960-epinter.zip which is supposedly with the 3.0 kernel) and it still will not boot. (I've wiped /system /data and /cache before flashing) All it does is sit at the "Warning bootloader unlocked" screen and it doesn't even become warm...
What I've done: basically, followed all the steps from the thread @bweN diorD posted. Rooted with MotoChopper, unlocked bl with MotoPocalypse and flashed CWM via adb. That was all fine. Then I noticed that CWM keeps disappearing, so I said yes when it asked me if I want it to remove that script from the stock ROM . It also asked "Fix root?" at the same time to which I said yes... Since then the system will not boot. Does anyone know what's gone wrong and what can I do to fix it? Is RSD the only way now?
@bweN diorD @iBolski and everybody else... pretty please :/
*EDIT* Got my stock firmware and flashed it via RSD-lite. Had to remove that check in the xml, but that was it, it has come back to life
Now what puzzles me... Why did the system die after saying yes to "remove the recovery remover script" and "fix root"? And why was CM11 dead on boot, too? Any ideas? :/
*EDIT #2* Nevermind, I'm on CM11 now Rooted again, the bl was still unlocked, installed latest PhilZ recovery and flashed CM11 straight up without even booting stock ROM after installing recovery. All is well! CM11 is so smooth on the R HD that I came a little bit. I loved my petite DEFY+ but this is freaking awesome!
glad you got it worked out
Drivers issue
Guys, I've now got a freaking drivers issue I cannot resolve... Need assistance
I am currently on CM11, on the jbbl. Last time I flashed an sbf was at the time of my previous post in this thread, so 5 months ago. Since then, I have changed my system drive (to an SSD, yay!) and lost the drivers set-up. Back then I was on Win7 x64, now I'm on Win8.1 x64.
At the moment, I cannot get ADB to work (it lists my device, but says it's offline) and cannot get RSD Lite (it's v6.1.6) to detect the phone when in fastboot. I'm attaching a screenshot of device manager's current status. The mot composite adb interface driver is fine, but the two in other devices remain question marks.
Motorola Device Manager (2.4.5) just looks for updates for my device and then quits after finding none. No matter if the phone is connected or not. Not sure if it's incompatible with win8.1 or just normal behaviour since my phone's not on the stock rom.
Does anyone know the right steps for setting up ADB and Fastboot drivers on win8.1 for our device? MTP works fine, no problems there.
*EDIT* Tried using [TOOL] [WINDOWS] ADB, Fastboot and Drivers - 15 seconds ADB Installer and ADB connects now, but RSD lite still doesn't detect the phone in fastboot. The device manager list looks the same... I hate driver issues >_< And just to be clear, RSD lite does not show anything while the phone is connect as MTP with debugging enabled, too.
*EDIT 2* All fine now. Just uninstalled everything and started from scratch. Drivers that come with Moto Manager are the only requirement.

You don't even need to OTA. Beside OTA is the least reliable method of updating. Just wait till the L images are posted or until L custom ROMs come out
So if i wait until L comes out, can i directly flash it instead, using the same flashing instructions from google? From old times of roms as far as i remeber, each rom had its versions of regions, so i had to flash specific region based rom on my phone. Havent done any thing like this for years so sorry for silly question.

Nothing to worry about with Google devices. Just go to Google's site and grab the L stock ROM for your device (D820 or D821) and fastboot it. Done. Or wait for a flashable zip
Ok thanks

[Q] [Question][//Solution] Reverting from Oxygen OS to CM11 using CM Installer

I'm just curious and haven't browsed XDA for a while. My curiosity got me to the point of posting in G+ and Twitter about CM installer reverting Oxygen OS to CM11. So many people installed Oxygen OS and because of missing features, they want to revert back to CM. I manually flash and root my devices. I know about CM installer which installs a stable version on a device without you doing anything but I've never used it. My question is, can a CM installer be used to revert back to CM11 without any issues. I don't have a problem flashing Oxygen or reverting or even bricking my device, it's just that I'm curious. If somebody could answer this, it will help a lot of newbies and others who are afraid of bricking their device or doesn't feel safe to go with the hand on method of flashing, fastboot techniques etc... and clear my curiosity too.
You can't just use CM Installer. We're already discussing this here:

If you read up on how to downgrade from OxygenOS or even CM12, you'll find out why you can't just reflash CM11 with CM Installer. Both O2OS and CM12 flash a new modem that won't work with CM11. The modem has to be reverted manually.

ok.. now, just assume that can be done by a newbie.... can someone downgrade with or without the modems? or might get stuck in a boot loop ?

Anything can be done by a newbie willing to read, and that's how one goes from being a newb to becoming proficient. That's why I don't like tools and video tutorials--more often than not, they leave people ignorant.
Yes, it will bootloop because the Lollipop modem doesn't play nice with CM11/11s.

I agree... I don't like tools either.. But I have seen people asking on FB if the service center can do an upgrade for them... this installer if it properly works could help those guys... does the installer wipes everything and installs them from scratch, the modems too, I meant. I haven't used it, that's why...
I'm not getting proper answers here or anywhere.. sorry guys... It's already understood that Oxygen and CM12 flashes a new modem, but when the installer flashes a stable version, will it remove or wipe everything and start from scratch? Oxygen OS may be a different thing, if and when CM12 arrives, which is going to be a stable one, can the installer be used to switch...?
