[Q] HTC One S bricked-ish - HTC One S

Hi,
long story short: while trying to install CM on my old one s I first flashed the boot.img as described here: h t t p : / / wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_ville. It appears that the firmware overwrote the custom recovery on a reboot, and when I entered recovery to install CM I got a screen saying "entering recovery..." in pink at the top, htc logo in the middle, and "This build is only intended for development, to not leak from HTC" (something like that) in red at the bottom. Nothing happened.
I shut it down and started it back up, and it went to boot with the same htc logo and red message at the bottom -- and froze there. Only 10+ sec power button restarts it, nothing else helps. Weird enough I noticed that if it's on a cable it won't restart but just stay off, and if it's not connected it will restart immediately, no chance to switch it off.
Here's my biggest problem: my volume rocker is brocken. Up works somewhat, but down is 95% dead. I entered the bootloader through adb before, but since I can't boot the phone anymore I can't get in anymore.
It seems to me like the best solution would be to somehow fix the volume rocker. It's not 100% dead, occasionally I could get a keypress through, so I would just suppose the contacts are a little bad and I could just polish it a little? But the phone seems a pain to take apart.
What would you suggest? Is it too easy to break the whole thing while trying to clean the contacts of the rocker?
Thanks for any help / comments!

Taking it apart is smth you can do. Ik its hard, i tried but if you're confident its your power button then do it. After you reveal the back of our phone, you can access the buttons

While that is my last resort, I'd like to avoid it. I do have a working Nexus 5 after all.

It's the volume rocker, not the power button; and it's been broken for a long time. I'm a little afraid I might rip things apart, but this makes it look outright easy: youtube.com/watch?v=6j25jajIq3g. I'll give it a try.

Serious boot-problem - HTC HD2

Hi,
I got my HTC HD2 only a couple of weeks ago, and I already got a problem with it
The thing is, that I can't boot it up properly; when pressing the "Turn on/Turn off/hang up"-buttom, it boots by comin' up with the white screen with the green "HTC"-logo in the middle and some system information in the left buttom.
Afterwards the animation with "quietly brilliant" comes up and the Windows logo with the orange background comes up - and then it turns off and boots up again.
I've tried to...
* reset it (not hard reset - I have some contacts that I don't wanna loose).
* charge it up (I can, when the windows-logo appears, see, that the battery's full)
* pull out the battery for several hours
Please help - I'm very sad about that I used tons of money on a device, that now won't work.
Is there any way, where I can solve the problem without loosing all my contacts?
I did it!
Ok, found out that all my contacts were synch'ed with my gmail.
I hard-resetted it, and it works now.
Thanks for your help
Lol well done!
For people that dont have push/exchange contacts etc, always backup using myphone, spb, sprite or other software.
Cant tell you enough how important it is to back up, unless you like loosing everything right?
Greetz.
Boot problem..
Hello there,
I bought my HTC HD2 like 2 months ago, and the first two days it froze like thrice !
Now, suddenly i find it turned off then when i try to boot it up, it get stuck on the white screen with the green "htc" and information in red to the bottom left. It hangs there!
It did later show the following black screen with white text:
"The device is unable to boot because either you have turned off the device incorrectly or tired to install an application from untrusted source. Press Volume Up to reset your decice or press any other button to cancel. This operation will delete all your personal data and restore the device to it's factory settings"
but the thing is, i can't press anything at this stage, nothing happens....
I did try to hardware reset, charge, remove battery and put back, etc..

You tried:
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons, then press the END/POWER button shortly and release it.
2. Release the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons.
3. Press the VOLUME UP button to perform the hard reset, or press any other button to cancel the reset.
If that dont work try flashing a new rom using mtty.
If that still doesnt work I would expect it to be a hardware problem, i would send it back to htc or if without warranty take it to a Phoneshop (or open yourself), probably a wires loose or something.
Thank you for replying... but sadly no, it didn't work
I do have warranty, ill take care of that..
Thank you again.
did hard reset and returned to factory settings. all my installed applications were lost. pity.
All I wanted is to install the @#$%% russian keyboard!
ALWAYS backup first. Simple.
I am having the same issue. Nothing has been installed as far as App's go. This is straight out of the box.

If its brand new out of the box, id take it back and get a different one. If its second hand, see if you can get into bootloader. If you can you can then flash a stock htc rom, if not its back to the shop.

[Q] recovering from a softbrick

So I have an lg g2x originally running gingerbread 2.3.3 and I went through this procedure -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1259852&highlight=linux+g2x+root
Everything seemed to work as described except that the phone now will not boot. I get to the LG screen but then the buttons just blink and shuts down and tries to boot again.
I must have missed a step somewhere, though I am not sure where that might have happened. In any case, I would like to get this working or, at the very least, get the phone back and working.
I am running linux and do *not* have access to windows at all.
Which LG screen are you getting? The static one or the one with a moving green bar underneath it? Can you still boot into Clockworkmod Recovery or was that a no go? You need to give more detailed information so people can figure out at what point in the boot process your phone is rebooting.
I get that initial booting LG screen with the face and the letters LG, there is no green bar. It sits in that screen for 15 or 20 seconds then attempts to reboot. Well, thats what I assume happens. The screen goes black, the buttons along the bottom flash and then after a few seconds that white LG screen comes back and it does it all again. It never gets past that and never into CWM. I can still put it in the flash mode that allows nvflash to connect and do its thing, but thats about it.
If you have successfully nvflashed cwm. Then you should be able to get into cwm by holding volume down+power until it goes to a blueish LG screen. Then flash a rooted rom from there.
That is the easiest/safest way of rooting a g2x. If you haven't done this you can Google "nvflash g2x Linux" and find guides on how to do it.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Right, thats exactly what should happen. Unfortunately, its not what actually happens. During bootup I a can hold power + volume down all day long and get the exact same behavior. Its a bit disconcerting.
[solved]
Guys, I found the problem and figured I would post it here for future folks.
I was unable to start my phone plugged into the charge (both to the computer and to the wall). I had to have the battery in for this to get to a good place. I guess initial startup just took too much power.
So if you do this, after using the restore script. Press the power button and volume down hold both, then *put in the battery*. Thats what worked for me.
thanks!

Black screen & no recovery!!!!

Hi all !!! Sorry for my English but I need your help
I commented what is happening with my phone N5 (which for good and evil is always stock without root or anything, with corresponding OTA updates.)
1- Yesterday afternoon at lunchtime while reading a book in playbooks, I notice that suddenly disappears one line and then appeared intermittently. I close the app and noticed the same thing happening on the screen menu. I shut down the cell and turn on again and I thought it must be an application be kidding. But still does.
2 Also yesterday I happened to change the security on the phone screen. After a while of normal operation, try to turn it on the screen with the button, nothing, the screen goes "black", with light and retrolight turned on but no picture no nothing .
Called the cell to see if it works or is turned off and the phone rings but the screen nothing. Try turning it off and on again by holding the on / off / lock button and the phone restarts, but the screen nothing. In one such attempt to do the above it is seen that managed to turn it off. And I get it on and do a normal boot, except that the picture of my screen is changed to the original. Change the lock screen which was previously using (slip). And it seemed that out or some conflict with the lock. In one of those again pressed the ON / OFF / lock as would normally and it starts all over again.
After I magically back to life, I want to make a full wipe as I think it should be an app that is doing some conflict or something. BUT ....
3I turn off the phone and then press the keys VOLUME UP / DOWN and ON / OFF is normally off, squeezed the first screen with the options but options RECOVERY / BOOTLOADER appears in red I choose RECOVERY give the ok with the key and .... andriod robot appears with the legend below that says something (I do not remember well) without or without controls options appears. So its seems thatI dont have recovery.
After that keep pressing the key ON / OFF and the phone turns off and / or reboot normally. All this I did it again to see if the error reappears and looks that I do not have recovery.
The failure of the screen is increasing. I dont know if they are separate problems or is it all the same problem.
Sorry if I was too long but I need the help of you.
UPDATE Now it seems that the screen died, since I do not achieve to turn it on as before, the light and the retrolight its ok. The phone receives calls and notifications but the screen stills black.
Thanks all.

sometimes things just "derp". itll happen more often if you dont reboot your phone often. also, your phone will be a little bit more responsive if it gets reboot once a day or two.
RMA or fastboot it back to stock, if the screen doesnt turn on afterwards then it looks like a hardware issue, open device and reconnect the display.

[Completed] Htc One M8 hardware buttons working weirdly

Hello everyone! So I've had my phone (HTC One M8) rooted and custom recovery and rom installed for a little while now. The latest rom I've installed was Android Revolution HD 22.1. I also have twrp 2.8.1.0 installed. The other day my phone got wet and started to constantly reboot itself, wouldn't shut off and stay off, would never actually start. I put it in a cup of rice for 2 days, then proceeded to plug it in to charge it. Once charged enough I tried to turn it on. It only made it the HTC One logo screen and would vibrate every 10 seconds or so. I tried rebooting several times and no matter what I did with different button combinations I could not get it to load into bootloader. Eventually with restarting different ways and "mechanically stressing" the phone (short temper lol) I managed to get it to loading into the rom itself. From there I opened hasoons all in one toolkit to reboot directly into recovery and recovered to the stock rom. So the phone will now reboot with no problem into this rom. I haven't tried reflashing the ARHD 22.1 rom again because im afraid it'll break again. However, while in the stock rom everything work fines except for the volume up button which does nothing, except for while the screen is off, if I turn my phone to landscape the camera app will open without me even pressing the volume up button. If I reboot into bootloader via the quickboot app or hasoons toolkit, my volume down button with make the cursor go up, the volume up button does nothing, and the power button does nothing. The only thing I can do in bootloader is to hold power+volume up to get the phone to reboot. I also cannot get bootloader to load by holding volume down+power. So, After all that explaining, my main question would be, do you think that the buttons are shorting in a weird way because of water damage, or do you think my software got corrupted because of all the rebooting it did? Any help is appreciated, thanks!
-Tim
Hi,
You could try a clean flash of the rom.... If you're sure the wonky buttons won't interfere with the flash, because if they do... You'll be left with no OS on the device.
Water can affect many things, especially with power on while it was wet. This will be hard to solve, and could get costly. Usually with water damage, you fix or replace one thing, only to find now that something else doesn't work. Can turn into a real money pit.
You're issue isn't so bad, but my usual advice for worse cases are save your money for a new device, because you may never get your device fully working and spend a lot of money trying to fix it.
Ah, I just saw you already asked for help in your device section. Good. ?
Then this thread can be closed, as we're here to help navigate the site, not support.
Thank you.

Soft- or Hardware Defect M8

Hey Guys,
I´m no English native so please be patient. I`m although no noob with Android and hardware but can`t figure out some strange defects on my M8. Hope for help!
So here is the story: A week ago I woke up late. My Phone was stuck in Bootloader and I couldn’t select any option. Only my Volume Up Button did change the marking
of options. Strangely it did so in the wrong way. Means Volume Up changed up to down. Pushing the Power Button shortly to select an option didn`t do a thing at all.
But pushing it for long did what it should: It shut the Phone down. As I restarted it I again got stuck in bootloader. By trying out different ways I managed to somehow
boot in safe mode. It took me some time to figure out that my Volume Down Button was stuck and was therefore the reason for the strange booting procedure.
It´ll get more strange from here on so please remember: Bootloader, only Volume Up Button working but in the wrong way, Power Button only reacts to long periods
of pushing, probably Volume Down Button stuck.
In safe mode the Power Button worked fine again and did respond to all kinds of pushes as it should. Volume down did not do a thing (As expected). Theory seems
confirmed. To rule out software issues I did a full reset in TWRP which I had to start from cmd on my desktop as my phone still did not take any selections in bootloader.
And additionally flashed a new rom (Skydragon GPE 5). Didn´t change my problem at all so I went to bed. My phone was nearly powered out and I forgot to plug it.
In the morning I found it dead so I plugged it in and booted it up. Strange thing: It booted completely normal. All Buttons were working. Yes, even the Power Down
Button. Now I realized that Wi-Fi isn`t working which could be because of my old firmware and the new rom. So I started to learn how to update the firmware - which
took me 15 minutes. As I got back to my Phone to get it started the Volume Button was stuck again. Now it finally has to be some hardware defect right? I found the
spare parts on Ebay and wanted to give it one last shot before I placed the order. So risked to get stuck in safe mode or bootloder (again) and pushed the Power
Button down hard. But surprise my phone decided to open a new chapter of strangeness: Nothing happened at all. Now the Power Button wasn`t working any more.
No reaction to short pushes and what’s completely new, no reaction to long pushes too. So I avoided restarts form that point on and used my phone for the last days
in that condition. Decided I could life without two of the three hardware buttons But as I could not flash the firmware without restarting the phone no Wi-Fi starts
to bother.
To be honest: I don`t know what to do! I don`t want to waste money on spear parts if there’s the option of some really strange software failure. A defect over night
without any physical forces aside from really high room temperatures seems unlikely to me. Even more if you count in the strange healing over night and the factor
that it not only broke down again but although spread it´s desesse to the power button. I`m really out! Any Ideas?
