Always on display - Samsung Gear 2

Most reviews of the new gear live and lg g watch emphasize the advantages of the alway on display.
What do you think....would be great if Samsung offered that option in the next firmware update (Tizen)....?

i personally prefer a battery that last for 4 - 5 days...

I miss just looking down and seeing info like on my previous smartwatches. I brought this up with another Dev to make a watchface that was always on, but had really skinny/small fonts on a black background for just critical info that leveraged the AMOLED tech, but it seemed this Dev had too many challenges getting even a full day out of the watchface. He didn't follow my full suggestion, though - so I wasn't surprised.

Going from a Pebble to a Gear 2, I thought losing the always on display of the pebble was a serious negative, but the Gear 2 makes up for it completely with the wrist movement detection. The display is on as soon as I want it. :good:

False. The Gear 2 motion detection is flaky and has a frustrating moment of lag that sometimes has me guessing whether it's going to show me the display or not. It is certainly NOT immediate and one of my main complaints when I came from Pebble. As it currently is, it's simply ok - but you do get used to it, I guess. Essentially we gave up a bit of usability for a prettier screen.

S IV; smart accessories

Hi
s4 some new smart feature in software and octa core processor in international version also has some smart cases & covers
to see notification maybe
or brief of some info
to work with S health & etc
http://reviews.cnet.com/2300-8900_7-10016135-5.html
Accessories showed up at the unpacked 2013
i don't really understand the smart cover, is it not just a normal cover with a slot cut out of it?
what's smart about it?
EDIT - just watched cnet explaining it. that is quite clever.
but surely the entire screen is switched on behind the cover??
also, in the videos the only way they are able to switch it to s view is by opening the case - doesn't that defeat the purpose?
not released yet but something to work with S-Health & etc
Thats a cool idea. When I first saw it I was like wtf?

maybe works by pressing the power button?
also is it magnetic like the iPad?
It appears to be magnetic but I don't understand how it displays the information without switching on the entire screen, in which case why not have a full screen of info.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 come with an AMOLED display which doesn't need additional backlight
that means that each pixels is emitting it's own light
and when the cover is on only the pixel that's displaying info is on
other pixels are told to be black so it's not using any power....
This means that it will not turn on the entire screen like LCDs and will have better black levels

Well, at least the flip covers and the S View covers will be the same price. I would've bet that the ones with the holes would cost more

right, but anyone who's used NoLED (can find it in the market) can tell you, its not simply about how much of the screen is used or not.. its the wakelock keeping the phone from entering a deep sleep that turns your 10 day standby into a 3 hour standby..
Samsung is clever tho, so I'm sure there's more to it than meets the eye. maybe its a solution to getting a notification and your pocket not bumping the screen keeping it on for an entire hour while you run...

Can't wait for S Bands either, it's a shame that the Jawbone Up things only worked for iOS.
Really interested in the smart cover, the way of working is amazing.
you can preorder the game pad now!!!

Interested in S band and smart cover too. Hope will not be very expensive, S band shouldn't be more than $80. Also hope it's compatible with other devices and brands in case someday I will buy another product too.

All the S band and S scales are an exact copy of the Fitbit accessories which have been around for years and Fitbit announced their band in January. Seems Samsung have finished copying Apple and chosen new targets?
I am not complaining about Samsung but Fitbit have the same products available now which work with ANY android, Ios or other phone why would I buy one that only works with one of Samsung phones?
GamePad seems awesome! It'll take a huge chunk out of potential nvidia project shield sales lol. Same or better processing power, more portable, can be used as a phone. Game pad is dead before its launch.

[APP] Weather Station

After putting an ambient temperature/humidity sensor in the Galaxy S4, Samsung has decided to put one into the Note 3 as well. I wonder how this app I developed functions on the Note 3 compared to the S4, especially with the faux leather cover and larger screen, etc:

I don't think so. People like to know the weather so why not get the weather exactly where the phone is? It's also useful for hiking, etc. The challenges are compensating for the internal heat produced by the phone.

Temp sensors on the phone itself Is cool because one, it’s more accurate than using a general location by setting it with a city and state and two you don’t have to leave your location / gps on as some people do with their weather apps.
Actually, I think the barometer is the best new sensor. The temperature one will be useless if you keep the phone in a pocket, but the barometer will be cool especially while flying as it would not be too difficult to turn it into a altimeter. (It would have to be manually calibrated to take cabin pressure into account, but that is usually a fixed ratio, like 6:1 or 8:1).
GN2 has a barometer already

Actually, you can, but not directly through the built-in sensors. However google for tellstick / Telldus Live, buy a couple of wireless switches and sensors and use the app Remotestick (plus a number of smart Tasker-rules) to control almost anything at home that can be controlled by wall outlets...
My home is almost completely remote controlled by my phone

Of course I put it on my new N3, and it's working perfectly. However they must have a different calibration, as the humidity can be out by up to 8% across devices. The temp is fine, or i should say within tolerable limits of measurement difference.
Does this app need root?
Another question I have:
Did someone measure how accurate the readings given by the N3 (or S4) are, compared to a real Thermometer or Hygrometer?
Thanks.

Anybody waiting for this over the Note 4?

Hey all
I for one will be waiting for this over the Note 4 (when it finally arrives in the UK) The curved screen technology really appeals, the slightly reduced battery capacity really does not bother me that much, for me its a small price for such an intriguing new feature. As the rest of the specs are pretty much identical to the Note 4, its down to who feels this new design is worthy of the wait.
Who's in? and how do other members feel about the extra screen real estate?:good:

I think I'm in your camp too. The only thing is, I have read some obscure articles claiming that this might not actually come to market for some time due to production issues and the curved glass. My contract renews in November, so hopefully we'll hear some more news before then.

Yep waiting on this one.... The note 4 is too close to my note 3 to be interested in it.
Waiting ... :highfive:

I'm on Verizon, living in the Greater Manchester Metroplex (actually, a little rural town but it sounds good). The odds of our corporate store having the Edge - even ONE - are dismal. So I'm going to have to order it online at 12:00:01 AM the day of release... or pre-order, whichever comes first.
I'm really hoping I can get the Edge, although one part of me is hesitant: the MODDER part of me.
How much development will there be for the Edge? Will there be sufficient quantities of stock to satisfy the demand on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon? Or will each U.S. carrier have maybe 50 of these things? Will developers even bother with it? Or will there be enough of a supply that developers will embrace it, root it, bootstrap it and create custom ROMs?
That is my question...
I'm waiting on this as well. At first, when I saw the details on the Note 4 when Samsung had their introduction, I was relieved because I knew I would save money since there was really nothing(in my opinion) worth upgrading from a Note 3 for.
But once I saw the info on the Note Edge, I was excited because I knew that I wanted to get it(and slightly disappointed because I thought I would be saving money on a phone upgrade this year.).
From what I've seen on the net, the Note 4 should launch in the United States sometime in October. Hopefully this means the Note Edge will launch in November.
The thing I really like about the Edge is that it will be very useful in multitasking since the access to app shortcuts will be on the Edge display. This will really increase productivity in my opnion. Even with the smaller sized battery, it should be fine since we can use the Edge display to check on notifications, etc. without waking the main screen.
I am still on my good 'ol Note 2. I wanted to original upgrade to the Note 4 until I saw the Note edge. Just wish they would give out some info
I have a GFlex now and impatiently waiting for the Edge!!!!
If the Note Edge is <$1000, I will definitely get it regardless of custom Roms, support, or reduced battery issue, simply because I want to do my part as to motivate Samsung in trying something new to smartphone world. Samsung took pioneer steps that no one else has taken for the good of the whole, instead of most company out there who only goes after their profit.
Only 1 question I still have regarding the Edge, and this is after watching all videos, articles of it. If we can turn on the curve screen for notification and such without turn on the main screen, then how do we plan to do so? I mean, should I press the power button? or a home button? Or whatever button? Wouldn't pressing those physical buttons turn on the main screen as well? Please someone tell me...

Yea I think that the edge would be a swipe like the note 3.
if i reach for my phone the screen lights up and tells me the time and miss calls, email etc...
so I can seen samsung making a setting for picking which screen to be active for swipe.
also I believe the power button would be map for the full screen on. And they will probably have swipe over just for the side screen. It means sense to me but let's see of they do it.
I'm thinking of getting the Note 4 when it drops since the Edge doesn't look like it'll be for sale until early next year. I'm on T-Mobile so technically I could "JUMP" after 6 months (April). Whatever phone I get, strong development support is a huge factor.

I was at the UK Samsung Experience. store at Stratford and was told the Edge is not coming to the UK as an official device release.
i'm waiting for Edge. I think if Australia release is 5th Nov, US would be before that. All carriers still have this as "coming soon". I wish Samsung was as aggressive as Apple in marketing and releases.
Just heard this will be a very limited release. Not for the UK or US.

So many poor watchfaces.

Why are there so many lame watch faces on the gear app store! I don't want much, just a simple watch face with all black background and a decent ambient mode. Most are over complicated trash. There are a few good ones out there there but the ambient mode is the standard got and minute hand.
I had a go at the watch face maker application on a Mac but I haven't got time to pay around with it.
I like the modern utility face from Samsung but wish the ambient mode had the hour markets at least.

If you can, do what i do and resort to making your own watch faces. Its a bit of fun and rewarding too.
The Gear S suffered from the same lack of watch faces. My biggest problem is with the ambient mode, which is utter garbage. When I moved over to the LG Urbane I realized how much I was missing (hundreds of full color ambient faces that lasts almost 2 days). I really hope Samsung will start making android wear watches again.

I was very specific. Lack of full display color ambient watch faces is my problem. I know there are hundreds of great watch faces for the S2, but they all look absolutely horrible in ambient. My bigger gripe is that this is a stupid software issue that should have been corrected since the S1.

Thanks!
In next update I will try to improve background colours also.
What I am mainly concerned about is all the copyright and trademark infringements going on in the market. You can't put Family Guy on a watch face, slap a digital clock on it, call it your own, and sell it for $2. You have to own the rights. Also, no one can use official Superhero logos and profit unless you own the rights to them as well.
This will hurt the Gear S2. When the companies who own the trademarks complain, the faces will be stripped from the market. Consumers who purchased them will no longer be able to download and install them. They will get angry at Samsung and Gear Apps as a whole, hurting sales... A market in its infancy like this should be more careful. By individuals releasing faces on the market like this they are also smacking other designers and developers in the face... Smacking down the integrity of whole "design process" really...
Is there an app for Gear S2 watch faces similar to Android Wear watchmaker. It is the only app I use on my Moto 360 gen 1. Just ordered refurbished Gear S2 for $140 via BB on Ebay offer.
Looking forward to it to complement my Moto 360 and Note 5.

I'm not sure if I want a phone with IPS screen.
I've had both. I jumped to the v10, and was back to the note 5 within a month.
The V10 is good, but not quite there yet on performance and bugs.
The camera is excellent though. I liked that better than the note.
Overall, it wasn't a bad phone for me. My wife still has hers and likes it.
It is a different experience for sure

AMOLED and dark theme save battery. I'm used to the AMOLED screen but that's just me. I don't like how pixels are lid up on a black background. The Moto 360 has the IPS screen and it's pretty annoying to look at at night with an always on watchface.

Ahh okay. I see a lot of people complain about that on the IPS devices. I didn't mind the ones I've owned in the past. I will say that I do love the Amoled screens but I just don't see the hype of the superBlacks that people rave about, though I do love my screen not Cyclops'in me at night though. Lol.

Same here...its a nice concept but v10 has worse battery life than note 5 and the second screen has weird shadowing issues that I could not stand ...not really a second screen...software splits them up...when you load cyanogen on it is obvious and I hated it.... hope this helps..

That sounds awful. I never get the point of the second screen in the V10.

Yeah pretty much just a dedicated recent bar or edge app bar...pretty gimmicky....note 5 is such a better device overall...I don't know why every phone doesn't have front facing speakers tho...the only thing I would change really...but viper does a very nice job improving default speaker performance.
I usually don't even need to turn it up past halfway!

Seems to have a lot to do with how people use their phones. I'm personally a heavy reader, and there's something about Kindle with the black background setting and an AMOLED display. The screen just sort of disappears when you read in the dark, and all you see are the letters floating in your hand.
After three Samsungs, I switched to a Nexus 5 a couple years ago and haaaated the always-glowing LCD. Picked up a Note 4, breathed a sigh of relief. Went through the usual annual "Samsung sucks, I'm never buying another Samsung ever again!" tantrum after that and tried an iPhone 6 just to "gain some perspective". Haaaated the always-glowing LCD yet again (and so much more--you can't answer incoming VOIP app calls from the lock screen? What??), and went right back to Samsung with this Note 5.
So I've basically learned two things about myself: 1) I need zero-glow-blacks and 2) whining about Samsung has never changed the fact that they're the only brand I haven't thoroughly hated owning.
I agree. Samsung is keeping the best AMOLED screen for their flagships. The 6P's AMOLED screen is great but you can clearly tell it's not on the same level.
