Hey guys. I got my G3 this Wednesday and I'm loving it so far. I came from an iPhone most recently. But I've had plenty of android devices. I tried enabling art but it won't stick.
I go into developer options select ART, the warning message pops up. I select yes. The phone restarts but the apps don't go through the process of upgrading. When I check developer options it's still on Dalvik. I'm not sure why it's not sticking and I haven't seen anyone else mention it.
I am rooted using towelroot. I haven't had any problems with the phone. What do you guys think it can be? Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
No matter what, I can never stay away from android for long.

Are you using xposed? If you are it won't work with ART, unless you uninstall it. Have you changed anything else on the phone?

You sir are awesome. I forgot to mention that I was. Yes I installed xposed due to Isis not loading because of root. I have $30 on there I didn't want to lose. Once I use up the free $30 I'll uninstall it. I am not currently using xposed for anything else besides the root bypass.
Thank you so much for the quick response! ????

Once you uninstall the framework for xposed ART will work just fine. It will eventually work with ART, but this won't happen until ART is finalized this fall with Android L's release.

It can found under developer options which have to be hidden first. Settings, General tab, about, and scroll to build number. Tap on builder until the message comes up that you are now a developer. Once you see that you can hit the back button and you'll developer options. Under select runtime you can choose between Dalvik and ART. You can read more about the differences between ART and Dalvik here in the forums.

Remember to uninstall exposed from inside the frame work. The first time I uninstalled it using a 3rd party app and my phone would not change to ART. So I had to reinstall the frame work and uninstall from inside exposed. Then I switched to ART with no problems.
hello. have u experienced any bugs or battery drainage when switched to ART? I'm on the fence on switching. I've heard good and bad things about it.

No bugs and no battery drain. This thing just flies. Battery is going good for almost two and a half days with moderate use. I do not play games with my phone so I can't comment on battery life for gamer's.

Yes, but installing exposed will switch the run-time back to Dalvik since exposed is not currently compatible with ART.
tweaksbox without xposed
I want to switch back to ART so i was going to uninstall xposed, will my modifications from tweaksbox and the app itself still be usable without the xposed framework?
Thanks!

Thanks for this. I was not able to enable ART after uninstalling exposed and could not figure out why. Hopefully enabling ART will cut down on the lag.
trouble enabling art
I too cannot run art. When I select it the device reboots but will only stay on salvia and will not change to art. I have performed latest ota vzw update to vs98511c. I am rooted with towelroot, stock recovery image and still have all vzw bloatware intact just disabled. I did install xposed framework and g3 tweaksbox a long time ago yet i have tweaksbox uninstalled and may need a refresher on uninstalling xposed framework for verification. I have performed two fdr thinking sw was just buggy yet issue persists. Any help would be appreciated and i also had another quesyion for another topic board/off topic opinion.
Thanks,
Chris
So I installed g3 tweaksbox trying to uninstall framework from within and I get a message telling me exposed framework is missing...

Hello,
Not sure if this is an issue that has been brought up before but when I switch my runtime from Dalvik to ART, it reboots my N5 and goes straight to my home screen. I know it is supposed to take much longer because of the conversion. Also, when I go back to Developer Options, the runtime is is still Dalvik.
Any suggestions to fix?

Do you use Xposed Framework? If so, its not compatible and will not allow the conversion to ART.

Well thank you both for the quick answer to that question and yes, its Xposed stopping it.

Yeah, between the ROM, kernel, and what I needed, the modules I used for Xposed were not enough to keep me with it. I didn't use that many so getting rid of it was easier than someone who uses Xposed almost exclusively for many Mods. ART seemed to run smoother for me (even if placebo) and felt like it wasn't necessary to keep Xposed if I don't use it.

Well, the app seems to work for me on ART. It should work for you as well, I would suggest back up the TWC app with an app like Rom toolbox lite, (it should do back-ups without root), uninstall twc and restore the back up. It sometimes resolves crashes issues with some apps for me.
You are welcome to root your device and will find more solutions. so far, very safe to root nexus 5.

Your hesitation is not unwarranted, but it is incredibly easy to root a Nexus 5. I'd check with others in the community for the app and see if anyone else is experiencing issues.

If you do want to root it, that's how you would do it. I never endorsed rooting though, since I think that in this case, if you just provided a bit more info, we could work it out without the potential of wiping all the data.
Have you tried completely uninstalling the app and any others that may conflict with it?

Was going to give this a whirl myself, but I've had zero time lately. Wife has been drilling me left and right with house and yard work. Anyway, enough of the whining.
Was hoping someone could come up with a flashable extended power menu, that has REBOOT, REBOOT TO RECOVERY, AND REBOOT TO BOOTLOADER added. I know there's an Xposed module, but I hate using Xposed as I've always had issues and lag. I appear to be the only one it seems. Regardless, a flashable with these options has proven very handy on past devices running stock ROM.

That one and the reboot menu specific one. Most people don't notice any xposed issues it at all. I for one do. Very high attention to detail....hasn't always been a good thing. Regardless, having an APK or "module" that goes through a hack process will never work as well as it being coded in the actual system apk. Are Xposed processes easy and for the masses......yes. Are they the right way to do things.....no.

At least you learn something by modding. I looked over your thread and don't feel comfortable flashing it on my American Sprint phone. I seen it has data issues with Sprint, and I don't have the time to debug problems at the moment. Also, in the past I've had BIG issues after flashing a T-Mobile ROM and firmware on my Sprint device. Caused way too many problems and I am very hesitant to do it again. Thanks for your work though!:good:
I figure I'll get around to it anyway. Probably after the next Android update.....
This is one of the easiest things to do as far as smali hacking goes, and there are countless guides for other devices that I've seen on how to do it. Maybe none specifically for 4.4.2, but the back-end code is still going to be the same thing that goes in, as it has been for several versions of Android. I'd say it's going to take you longer to get the proper tools to do the changes, than actually making them.

I notice lag/stuttering whenever I use xposed framework, not modifying an apk. Have tried the reboot menu module, gravity box module, and the hot spot module. Have tried them alone, and together. As soon as I remove xposed or reflash the firmware, my issues stop. Have tried a few different versions of xposed as well. Same thing every time. There are others I've briefly talked to who notice the same issues, on different devices.
Xposed is a great option to have, but it's not for me.

Hello...
I was wondering how hard is to implement CM Privacy Guard to stock 4.4.4?
I konw that OpenPDroid has an autopacher tool... is it possible to do it in same manner?
tnx.
@normaj Don't think it will work. But there are plenty of alternatives. 4.4 has App Ops. It's just hidden by default. Download a FREE App Ops manager. That will give you GUI access. Trickster Mod has a App Ops enabler built in if you use that app.
Edit: then again maybe App Ops was only in 4.3 but taken out after. Can't remember. If you have Xposed there are modules that do the same thing. There's also XPrivacy. Can't remember if that's a module or just an app.
Edit 2: OK XPrivacy is an app in the play store but requires XPosed.
Privacy Guard is just built in top of App Ops to add the notification/option to block permissions on newly installed apps. App Ops is a hidden feature in Android 4.3+ (disabled by default in KK). There are various ways to re-enable it in KK, either by manually decompiling and editing smali or with an Xposed module. Most custom ROMs have it pre-enabled by default, and some have CM's "Privacy Guard" added too.

App Ops exists in KK (and even the L developer preview) but it's disabled, there are smali edits to re-enable it on stock. And theres an Xposed module, "App Ops Xposed" that does that same thing but with Xposed.
Just in case you are on stock and don't want Xposed. And you are not rooted. I just found this. I'm on Rooted L Prev and will be trying this. So glad I just found it.

OK that app isn't so bad. It edits the app and removes permissions. Then it recompiles the apk with the permissions removed and then reinstalls the app for you. If you don't have root this is an excellent application as it's easy to use despite the hoops the app has to jump through. But if you have root access you will want to did an app that can edit permissions without reinstalling the app.
Also with the app above you have to do this everytime your edited apps update.

Shh, deal with it
Off topic rant: in Australia, every carrier/tech store I walk into, there are accessories (cases, screen protectors) for every single phone, including the LG G3, HTC One M8, Oppo Find 7, even the OnePlus One.
But the Nexus 5? Ask and they're like "NOPE WTF IS THAT PHONE WE DON'T HAVE ANYTHING FOR YOU".

That is extremely weird. It should be the other way around as nexus 5 gets more sales than the oneplus one.

So I've never rooted a phone but have always been very interested in doing it. I'm just worried about bricking my phone since I have no experience doing it. Is it easy for a beginner to pick up and is it worth the risk? How much better does it improve your experience?
It's a personal thing. Most things you can do without root. Its a matter of personalization.
You can fix OnePlus’s ****ed up notification system. That alone is a big benefit.
You can't really brick the OnePlus 7 Pro, there are recovery options and people here to help if you do. It is extremely easy to do with little to no risk.
Follow this guide

Explain this issue if you can. I was looking for a reason to root. I already got my sim unlock from T-Mobile. Only thing I'm missing is all my data backed up by titanium that I use on every device I get. I usually root day one but every passing day I appreciate Oxygen OS more and more. The experience reminds me of the old days of rooting the SAM**** and installing Cynagen. This is smooth as butter
Rooting actually let's you do a back up and restore if you do mess something up. It let's you remove apps that you don't want like for example sprint radio that I never used, can't remove without root. Root let's you use adblock and YouTube premium(ad free YouTube). Root lets you flash custom kernals even if on stock os, custom kernal can improve battery life. Ultimately things improved where u really don't need root like rooting a Samsung will cause a iressviserable Knox trip but one plus doesn't use Knox. And can be locked back to official status

what's wrong with it?
I have it rooted just as a "piece-of-mind" thing. And actually, it looks like YouTube TV took away 720P playback after I rooted. So there's a reason not to do it; first-party apps may not work properly to combat piracy, which is a load of crap if you ask me.
If you root, you won't be able to get anything above 480p or HDR on Netflix. Something to consider.

Try
Open Magisk > Settings > Hide Magisk Manager
Once New Magisk manager Installs, It will reopen Magisk Manager
Go to Magisk Hide and Hide YouTube TV
See if that works for you!

Thanks. I tried it but nothing changed, even after rebooting and clearing the app's cache.

Wow really? Well damn that's pretty big reason not lol. I use Netflix all the time on my 7 Pro.
Getting rid of ads are a good point.. but then other than the occasional irritant, I don't mind them enough to want to root. Other than that, there is no other reason for me to root. I would love the helvetica nueve font. Haven't found a way to do that without root. But that's okay.. I am still not going to root.
Interesting enough I originally join this board to root, but I have not rooted any device in years.
Even reading the board there always seems to be some trade off.
New update, can not do it right away got to wait so you can root.
Apps that will not work when rooted, ok but almost always you can get them working.
..... Just not worth it anymore for me.
Now I am happy reading about things like the GCAM, and things other people are doing.

You will still get HDR but it will be in 480p. Most of of the time you will never notice the difference.
Even while unrooted, Netflix will only display 720p on the oneplus 7 pro. So you gotta weight your options here.

For me one of things for rooting is magisk modules for adblock, vanced youtube, debloating, themes, changing the navigation bar height, V4a, boosting the speaker audio and custom kernels as well as customization to OOS.

There are magisk roms like renovate that give you the option or you can download RomAur (based on OOS) which has all these customization baked without needing any extra modules.
Also many banking apps aren't keen on root. Mine does a bunch of different checks. Main reason I've not rooted.
