[Q] Should I wipe data and clean the cache? - Sony Xperia L

Hi, I have installed Paranoid Android 4.4 for Xperia L. Now, the developer has released a new build 4.41. My question is, should I wipe data and cache when upgrading or should I just flash the zip? Should I also flash GAPPS?
If a data wipe isn't necessary, what happens to the apps and data in my inbuilt memory when I flash the zip?
Hope I'm clear. Thanks in advance!

Hello there =) if it's only an update, wiping cache and dalvik is all you need. Then flash the update. No need to flash GApps.

You should make a titanium backup first! Make sure to backup contacts! Then, wipe cache & dalvik! Then, flash ROM! Then, flash GAPPS! Then restore backup!

[Q] how to wipe?

hi,
i just rooted my mz601 3.2 and i want to install the ics everest.
can someone please let me know how i can wipe the xoom prior the ics flash?
i have cwm recovery installed .
many thanks!!
Boot into recovery you'll find a list of options there. It would also be a good idea to read "Xoom Heaven" posted in the general section first.
Your going to have to Wipe Data and factory Reset, Wipe Cache partition than scroll to advanced and Wipe the Dalvik Cache. After that go to Install zip from SD card.
thanks Guys,
i manage to install the Ics and everything is fine.
what cache / data do i need to wipe when i will flash an updated ics rom?
do i stiil need to wipe all of the above and loose my aps and data again?
thanks!!
I Personally like to do the full wipe thing, just as you did before. Because that's one less thing you don't have to consider when having problems.

Custom Rom, Upgrading

Hey Folks,
lets say im running CM9 version 10, and the developlers just released version 11.
I want to flash v11, do i have to backup all my data (via titaniumbackup for instance) or can i just flash the rom and continue there where i left?
And, do i have to do a full wipe, clear cache part, clear dalvik cache (via clockwork recovery) ?
regards,
mike

Always better to backup and nandroid, and do a full wipe. That way if you run into any problems you know it will be because of something that's going on now, and not something that was left from the previous versions.

technically you can just flash version 11 over version 10 without having to wipe or backup anything at all, everything should work because you are flashing a ROM of the same base.
however, it is always recommended that you backup (either titanium, nandroid or both) before you flash.
And also, usually wiping data is not necessary, but wiping cache and dalvik is recommended.

Flashing a JB ROM

Hey, I'm currently on MIUI ics. I know I have to wipe/factory reset everything. But is it safe to flash on the current CWM? Or do I need to update it or something? Do I just flash the new JB rom like I would switching from MIUI to a stock ics rom? I'm a noob, sorry if this doesn't make sense.
What version of CWM are you running?
You should be fine, but it never hurts to check. You flash a JB rom just like any other. Wipe wipe wipe and flash.
The whole wipe wipe wipe is completely unnecessary. One wipe is sufficient and any additional won't do anything.
It's like saying that unless you wipe exactly 3 times the Android Gods are going to demand a human sacrifice for your phone to boot.
lol i think dvorak meant wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, wipe data (wipe wipe wipe) but that's my take..
anyway, if you can flash MIUI ICS with whatever CWM version you currently have, you should be able to flash other JB ROM. Nandroid as always.. Goodluck!

This is what I did :
1. Boot into recovery and perform a nandroid backup of my MIUI installation.
2. Wipe.
3. Flash XenonHD 9 JB ROM + marmite 4.2 kernel.
My phone is running really smooth now. Good luck.

Yep, that's it. Of course wiping everything 3 times would be unnecessary.

if you get a cluster f*#@ of problems then clean install. It isn't that hard. Use Titanium Backup and good to go.
In Recovery:
1. wipe data/factory reset (this formats /data, /cache and .android_secure on sd)
2. format /system, /boot
this leaves you with only bootloader, recovery and radio...dalvik-cache resides on /data, so it's gone already.
3. flash rom
4. gapps & custom-kernel (if needed). No need to let the phone boot & settle before flashing them (most custom-kernels have a script that automatically wipes /cache & dalvik during kernel-install)
5. reboot
6. Run TB -- restore missing apps with data --1st option under restore
just updating rom:
1. flash rom-zip
2. wipe /cache and dalvik-cache
3. reboot
Do this before reporting any issues on the thread since the problems are often related to this and not the ROM or kernel.

[Q] How to Update Custom Rom

Hello to all,
I am using Oxygen's ROM 3.0.0 and i want to update to the latest one. Should i flash the update through recovery? If yes, what should i wipe?
Also by flashing the update through recovery my apps etc will be erased?
Thanks in advance!
Just wipe cache and dalvik, and install new zip. Your apps will be there intact.

You do not need to format Data. This is rare. When flashing a different flavor of ROM, use the top 4 wipe buttons (cache, Davlik, factory, system)
When flashing between different versions of the same ROM, wipe Cache, Davlik and System (not Data).
Then flash the ROM, GAPPs and optional Kernel.
