[Q] OTA to NE5 - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I just did an OTA update to NE5. I noticed that my software and baseband version still say AND2, but my build number shows NE5. Is that how is should be or did something mess up with the update? TIA

Sounds like you didn't get the new modem - it is pretty easy to push onto your device via Odin if you have it available.

You're right. Not sure why it didn't take when i did the ota. But I found the thread with the ne5 modem and it took this time. Thanks

Uhhh, you are about 1 week to late for this information. Thanks though.
I was rooted, no lagfix when I tried to update. It got to 100% then it said failed. My baseband says I897UCJH7. Kernel 2.6.29 [email protected] #2.
Did the update work or not?
Flashman, how did your OTA update go? Any issues us rooted/unlocked folks should be worried about?
My instinct is to delay the update until I stop seeing posts about hot it F'd up people's phones.

If you rooted and removed anything from stock rom, you're pretty much guaranteed to fail on OTA update. In order to make the OTA download package as small as possible, Samsung uses a diff patch based on the bit differences between stock JF6 image and new JH7 image. So, if you touched the JF6 in any unauthorized way, the patch won't work.
Luckily, you can now use the newly released Kies Mini to do a full ROM update which should be more reliable as you have the entire ROM image downloaded to your desktop and then flash to your phone.

If my settings say i'm at JH7, does that necessarily mean the OTA update was completely successful? It reached 100% then said failed.

What do you mean removed anything from stock rom? I rooted and removed a bunch of the bloatware and did an OTA update with no issues.
I failed along with most other rooted and flashed guys. Luckily I didn't brick my phone in the process. I will wait until some beret update comes along before trying anything ota again.
Sweet life
Nevermind, I guess it didn't update fully cause some of the implemented changes aren't there. I really didn't want to have to run a master clear and have to reinstall all my stuff.

Do you have TouchWiz as your default launcher? and make sure you're on your home screen when you connect your USB cable.
If that doesn't do it you need to get back to JF6 only way or another because Mini Kies will continue to tell you that you have an "unregistered" device until it is at JF6
The reason is because your update failed partially :/
are you guys talking about a new update or just JH7?
We're talking about JH7, some people are still having difficulties getting it on their phone as the OTA is still failing - and if you've failed the OTA you need to reflash to stock before mini kies will work.
when i did the update i was rooted an it didn't fail on install or bootup or anything.
but then again i'm just rooted and nothing else has been touched.

Exactly, I don't think root causes any issues. I was able to check for update on a rooted ROM.
It's when you have a custom kernel etc.

Not really. AT&T has said that the real update will be sent out via SMS text message link, not through the "update software" menu in android.
Engadget just had that yesterday.

New Update for Verizon S5 (NK2)

Did anyone else get a pop-up for a new OTA update today? I'm running NI2 and the new one looks to be NK2. Google doesn't return much in the way of results for something coming today/recently. There's not much on Verizon's site either: http://www.verizonwireless.com/dam/support/pdf/system_update/benefits-galaxy-s5-12-16-14.pdf All it lists is a VPN fix, SD card fix, and replacing ISIS with Softcard. It does not appear to be Lollipop
Hopefully flashing the kernel to NCG rooting and then returning to the current kernel still will work. I can download the files if someone can explain how to extract the kernel.
I too just received this update. Going to wait don't want to lose root
I got the update and applied it. Lost root (knew I would), but everything else seems fine.
I don't know how to extract the kernel though. Hopefully others take notice and help you or just provide the process and files for the masses.

Also just got the update on my Verizon GS5.
Appears to be a small update as the download and install did not take as long as other major updates.
Verizon still at 4.4.4
Unable to find any reference to the change log via a google search.
Anyone have a change log?

Still amazes me after all these years how quick people are to install updates. I don't touch them with a ten foot pole till i find out 100% what's in them lol.

use terminal emulator or adb (just need root) - for system and kernel dump
Code:
su
dd if=dev/block/mmcblk0p15 of=/mnt/sdcard/boot.img
dd if=dev/block/mmcblk0p23 of=/mnt/sdcard/system.img
Seems to be a small and non-critical update. I'll probably skip on this and wait for lollipop.

I've had a few skips here and there, but occurances vary greatly depending on the app, BT device, and distance. 90%, though, is problem free.
I just updated lost root of course, used the towleroot/odin flash method and put the NI2 kernal back on, phone says I am still up to date with NK2, and finds no new updates. Not sure if this is actually the case, I am still new to all of this. But I do have root access back now so..
you would have to odin back to ncg kernal, root then odin nk2 kernel back once and if its available
---------- Post added at 08:40 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:37 PM ----------
if u odin ni2 and still shows nk2 then it probably didnt work.. either way, you need to wait until someone puts out the kernal for nk2 or else u might as well stay on nk2 or just go back to ncg root install ss then flash rom of choice and then kernal of choice lol. im content where im at especially when theres no big changes at all
been waiting for this just for the SD card fix ever since the verizon tech's told me it was coming, hopefully they really did fix it.
Now the anxious waiting for it to get posted since I can't do OTA from Canada.
I will wait for it to be rootable, as I'm not willing to lose that.
That said, I've been waiting to be able to use OpenVPN over 4G/3G since I got the phone, so if this fixes the issue, it's definitely worth the update for me. I still can't believe it's taken them this long to fix the freaking issue...

I have not lost any BT connection, and I am running NI2 4.4.4 and a Gear 2 Neo.
I too will also likely skip this until Lollipop, and then I will only upgrade to Lollipop if/when it is launched/rootable.

It won't be rootable, as the past 2 updates haven't been rootable. As long as you can downgrade to NCG, that's your root method right there. You won't be able to root the new updates as they stand.
Chainfire's Super Su survival mode works great on new update.
Nevermind lost root

S6 - SM-G920i Firmware

Hey everyone,
I have a g920idvu1aod1 Samsung that I bought off of eBay, pretty sure it came from Latin America. Anyways, is there an OTA update or a firmware I can flash to get to 5.1.1? Everyone else seems to have this update but when I go into settings, there's nothing.
Any ideas?
India currently has the latest 5.1.1 firmware for the 920i. Download from: http://samsung-updates.com/details/48408/Galaxy_S6_SM-G920I/SM-G920I/INU/G920IDVU2COF8.html and flash with Odin.
The phone isn't from India though, like I said in the OP. It's from Latin America.. will it still work if I flash..? Because I believe that it's a different baseband version. Mine ends in AOD1.. the one you gave me ends in COF8.

Doesn't matter, still works.
The letters at the end are just the version number.
So long as it is for a 920i you're sweet to go. (My phone is from Australia, works fine on Indian firmware.)
edit: This link here should be faster to download the Samsung-updates, it's the same one I used on my phone.: http://d-h.st/YOpx
Use the "Download Now" button, not the normal "Download" Button for a direct link rather then a dodgy looking .exe file

Spot on mate. Put phone in Download mode, then flash with ap section of Odin.
Backup anything you want to keep first as this will erase absolutely everything on your phone and update your bootloader, baseband, modem etc. to the latest versions and start up like a brand new phone again.

Help! So Very Confused!

I need some help. I'm not sure where to go from here. Ok so I have a Canadian S8+ (SM-G955W). A couple weeks ago I flashed what all the articles said was a final release of Oreo just not released yet, meant for SM-G955U, with build number R16NW.G955USQU2CRA1. I've got a couple questions:
1. Is there any new update I should/can flash and where would I get it from?
2. Will I get OTA updates at all if I'm on the software for the unlocked version?
3. I've not had any major issues but my signal has been weaker then before, any way to fix this?
I'm not an expert at this so simple instructions are best. Thanks. ?
If you want to update to the most recent Oreo release, not official yet, it's CRAF. You have to ODIN back to BQL1 then flash the update to CRAF.

Negative. BUT, I'm on CRA9, which was released before CRAF and it runs GREAT, for me. I'll stay on this till official rolls out. Then I could (and yourself) flash back to BQL1 and take the OTA or wait for the ODIN files to be released and flash that way.

I assume your friend flash the firmware. Check at sammobile.com for the firmware that matches your device, provider, and country.
If you could recall your previous firmware version prior to the one you are using now, then search for it, flash it, and try updating OTA or you could just download the latest version and use that.

Official 8.0 Update coming from Bootleg 8.0?

So i am running 8.0 with the R16NW.N950USQU3CRAF Update, and i am having a hard time getting the OTA update that was recently launched. (changed dates to check for software updates and rebooted with no luck).
Will i need to downgrade back to Nougat in order to get the Official 8.0 update?
You won't get yesterday's OTA unless you are running the previously released AT&T OTA which is BRA8 I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong). So yes, flashing back to what people here are calling "stock" would allow you to get recent OTA.

I'm not the really the person to ask about that. I haven't flashed my note 8. I just waited and took the OTA. I've just been following the threads out of habit from flashing phones since the beginning of the galaxy line. Sorry I can't be of more help for you.

Jackman is correct (Although being on the newer 3BRB2 would be best)
Odin is going to be the ONLY way to get back to stock.
You can go HERE for links and such.
Even when the 3CRC1 Odin files become available, Odin will still be the only option to get back to stock
