[Q] Quick question in regards to order of flashing? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I wanted to upgrade the software on my nexus which I havent done since November I think. Currently I am on:
4.4.1
Baseband: M8974A
Kernel: Franco #54
Build Number: KOT49E
Recovery: 2.6.3.4 (Themed)
I wanted to upgrade to 4.4.4 Paranoid Android (latest stable), update my modem and update TWRP. Can someone confirm the order with me?
1) Flash the new recovery
2) Wipe data/factory reset/clean cache
3) Format /System
4) Install Paranoid android
5) Install Modem (KTU84P is the latest correct version according to my build number right?)
Would that be correct?
Also would I need to remove the TWRP theme before updating TWRP?
Thanks!!

1) Flash the new recovery
2) Take Backup
3) Wipe data/factory reset/clean cache (cache is not needed - included)
x) Format /System - Not really needed
4) Install Paranoid android
5) Install Modem (KTU84P is the latest correct version according to my build number right?) Can be done at any time

That'll work fine except I wouldn't bother to update the stock recovery. For twrp, just flash the latest twrp zip. Google recovery zip collection xda for the latest zip

Can you update TWRP from TWRP?

I currently have 2.3.1 installed on my note. I want to update to 2.6.3 so I can install CM11.
I only have TWRP installed and my current ROM (some verzion of PA) has already been factory reset (aka I can not actually use my ROM/Phone).
In order to update to CM11 I need to use the latest TWRP.
Edit: When I try to install the .zip for 2.6 from 2.3 it gives me an "error" message
Yes, you can. But after flashing the update, you must reboot into recovery (restart TWRP) before flashing anything else.

[Q] Which version of TWRP with KatKiss 4.4.4?

I am going to flash the 4.4.4. KatKiss ROM (currently my 101 is on KatKiss 4.3.1)
I am planning a full format / wipe....do I need this or can I just flash the ROM with TWRP?
What version of TWRP is recommended for this ROM? I am on 2.3.1.
If I have to upgrade TWRP, what is the best way to do it? I have heard ADB is not recommended??? What about TWRP manager on GooglePlay?
Thanks a lot - Love the ROM, and the help!

You should be able to just wipe SYSTEM, CACHE and DALVIK CACHE and flash the ROM and GAPPS
IIRC it's fine doing it that way for upgrading, but if you ever wanted to return to a lower version of Android, you'd have to factory reset / format everything
You should be good to go with that version of TWRP, I use 2.3.2.3 but unfortunately the Goo Manager used for upgrading TWRP has been dropped, so you'd need to use a flashable zip to update
Flash from your current version of TWRP, then reboot back into Android to complete the update, once back in Android, you can boot into your new TWRP and flash your new 4.4.4 ROM

Here ist what i have experienced:
I was on System Version: 181.46.3
Well nevertheless:
It was the most recent version i could get and i wanted to get back to Android L.
I installed CM12 the Following way, I had a lot of problems with that. So here is my experience and everything:
So you need to know, to install CM12 or other CM12 based ROMS you first need to have CM11 installed.
Newer Versions of the recovery might be having problems installing CM11, so i would recommend using PhilZ Touch Recovery. It was working for me.
1st: install PhilZ recovery
2nd: factory reset
3rd: install cm11 (Unified Build, due to no up-to-date-build for XT925)
4th: boot
5th: install latest TWRP XT925/TWRP XT926
6th: factory reset
7th: install CM12 XT925 / CM12 XT926 or other CM12 based ROM
8th: install Gapps
9th: wipe cache/dalvik cache
10: Boot
11: Have fun.
Possible problems:
"This package is for moto_msm8960, xt907, scorpion_mini, smq, xt926, vanquish, this is a xt925" ------> You got a problem with the Recovery, it is too new. Try PhilZ
CM12 Booting, inconsistent Data partition stuff error ---------> you did not install cm11 and did not wipe Data before installing CM12, when coming from Blur Rom
Bootloop ---------> no wiping or you did not install cm11 before installing CM12
I hope this might have helped you.

Heyho
I have an XT925.
I installed the msm8960 Build.
The Reason i used the unified Build was, there is no KKBL build for the xt925.
thanks again, onto the procedure now
just last thing, which version of philz recovery you installed, download link has latest one @esok44

If you come frome OTA Kitkat 4.4.2
you have to change Step 1st: install PhilZ recovery ------ to ------ Install TWRP2710-RAZR-HD_M-KITKAT.img instead then you can flash the CM 11
If you like philz_touch_6.58.7-moto_msm8960.img recovery (it can mount external Memory Card as USB) you can flash it after all installations after Point 11. The only thing that you cannot start directly to recovery from CM 12.1

Successfully dirty flashed from Stock 5.0.1 > Stock 5.1 > Cataclysm Mar 12 + updates

Successfully dirty flashed from Stock 5.0.1 > Stock 5.1 > Cataclysm Mar 12 + updates
Hi,
for anyone that's actually running a Lollipop stock firmware and is willing to switch to this excellent ROM, I inform you that you can install it over a 5.1 Stock firmware without wiping or losing your data.
Until a week ago, my Nexus 5 was on 5.0.1 stock, so I first upgraded it to 5.1 using the LMY47D factory image
https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/hammerhead-lmy47d-factory-6c1ad81e.tgz
I followed the usual fastboot procedure, just modified the flash-all script to remove the -w switch, so that it would not wipe the Nexus data/cache partitions but still upgrade system, bootloader and radio.
Since factory images also reinstall the stock recovery, I reflashed the latest TWRP and used it to flash the Cataclysm Mar-12 Beta, then the latest Cataclysm update (Cataclysm-Beta_Update_Mar_16.zip as of this writing); you can also flash your preferred kernel (I use ElementalX 2.11) and wipe cache (just to be sure) then reboot.
I only experienced a minor issue with the QuickToggles/Notifications pulldown, but easily fixed it following this procedure from the Cataclysm FAQ section:
My home/back button, notification pulldown isn't working after a dirty flash
- Open a terminal emulator on the phone and digit:
- su (enter)
- am start -n com.google.android.setupwizard/.SetupWizardTestActivity (enter)
- follow the instructions and possibly reboot after

(don't worry, despite what it says, the setup wizard will not initialize or restore your phone from backup, I guess we must force-launch it to reset some cache file).
That's all: now I have the latest Cataclysm ROM with all my apps and their settings but didn't have to reinstall or restore from backup ... I'm pretty sure we can do this with Cataclysm (and not with other ROMs like CM or Paranoid) because it's basically a stock firmware plus the atl4antis additions.

Phone very "laggy" with stang5litre rom

I just flashed my wife's Galaxy S4 (SCH-I545 ) with stang5litre's Lollipop rom (see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/development/stang5litre-ediition-5-0-t3132555).
I have the NK4 bootloader with Safestrap installed. The previously installed stock OS was 4.4.2. I installed Stang5litre's rom over the exising ROM using SS (in other words, I DID NOT use a new ROM slot).
The method I used was (from the ROM's announcement page):
If coming from any Rom Before OC1 Ex 4.4.2 or Below
1. Boot into SS
2. Flash stang5litre 5.0 Edition v2NON-MDK Rom.zip
3. Flash OC1_firmware.zip
4. Flash SuperSU v2.49 Beta
5. Flash OC1 SS/FF Flashable kernel.zip
6. Reboot system.
Everything seems to be working okay, but the apps take 10+ seconds to open. Once open they seem to run normally.
Any suggestions?
Also, the instructions included nothing about wiping the phone before flashing, so I did not do it.
Should I have?
Would this ROM/method still work if I did a wipe to factory settings before installing? Thanks.
You apply al wipes? Data, system, caché, dalvik cache?
