Audio related question - General Questions and Answers

When I brought my Audio Technica m50,and plugged them into the computer for the first time,it installed high resolution drivers for the headphones.
This happened nearly a year ago. Just a few days back, I noticed that the high resolution drivers (24-bit/192 kHz) weren't properly enabled by me. As in, in settings I hadn't set the output to 24-bit 192-kHz,bit rather it was at default 16-bit 44.1 kHz. So I corrected it and set it at full high resolution.
I then played my 24-bit audio collection, and the difference was mind blowing. It wasn't just in my mind. The dynamic range was immense and extremely larger than before. To confirm it wasn't just shock value, I played some of my highest resolution tracks, and in realtime switched the audio resolution. It actually was hugely improved.
Now comes the question. I have an HTC One M8. The audio in this phone is great, better than any I've had. But is it possible to convert those windows drivers into something android can recognize, and play these headphones with those drivers which came with it? I am a total noob in technical stuff so I'm asking it. Please don't mock me for asking this question, because I'm not knowledgeable in it, and would want a sincere answer by someone who knows what I'm talking about.
I do realize that the work would be a lot, it might drain the battery of phone, it would be different for each phone, and each headphones. But is it at least *possible*?
Tl;dr can the high resolution audio drivers my headphones came with be modified in any such way that they can be run on my android, and not its native drivers? (I hope I summed it up accurately xD)
I would really like an answer to that! thanks

Optimal Video Settings for High Quality Playback Using Core Player?

I have Core Player and love it's steaming capabilities. Doesn't skip and has plenty of feature to customize. The problem I'm running into is playing videos from my SD card. I have two TV show episodes loaded onto my microSD, 640x480. For some reason, Core Player skips a frame or two, sometimes, and freezes/lags for a solid 5-7 seconds other times.
I'm wondering if there are any fixes for this? What settings work best for the Core Player for the smoothest possible feedback?
Unfortunately...
This is not the answer that you want to hear (and I hope someone can prove me wrong) but you will probably will have to reencode those videos to a more CorePlayer friendly format if you want to use CorePlayer on your Raphael to play those files.
CorePlayer doesn't play nicely with H264 files yet on our Qualcomm chips. You can reencode to something like divx/xvid or wait until CorePlayer 2.0 to release sometime in 2009. They claim better hardware support will come with that version. Or you can reencode for WMP. Yeah, I know, kind of a bummer. =/
More info can be found on xda and fuzemobility. I think there is an xda thread started by k9tim regarding this issue if you want to read up on it.
One thing that helped for non H264 files was to increase the buffer size tenfold and decrease video quality to Medium or Low for better framerates. Didn't help me for H264 files but it did help me with some mpegs. I hope someone can prove me wrong.

I watch movies and tv shows in xvid and divx with 1.25, default settings, high quality, with absolutey no slow downs at all. What exactly are you trying to play?

Well, you're right - It's certainly not good news. But the bold'd part made it that much better, so it evens out
As far as the info goes, I really appreciate it. It's really no problem for me to leave my computer on overnight with a whole queue of files to re-encode. It'd suck if I was trying to get other things done too, but a fan on high and a few solid hours overnight should (hopefully) take care of these issues. Thanks again.

You, or anyone else who reads this and has zero issues with playback, wouldn't happen to have drivers from this post installed, would you?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2892184&postcount=357
I'm wondering if that's the issue - different drivers on different phones. I have a stock ROM Alltel HTC Touch Pro, with no real desire to upgrade/flash/change the PRL. I ***LOVE*** it the way it is and probably won't be getting a different phone for 3-4 years. 99.8% perfect in my book (with potential factored in, too)
I have a stock Fuze and can get good playback.
Again it all depends on the source files your trying to play. Some of my trilinear and high quality audio encoded files chop / lag every 60th frame or so but at high quality its worth it. Medium quality it does not slow down too much. Most play smoothly till high action in which case they will slow a little.
Increasing the buffer and playing with the method of drawing can increase your quality. If I was not half asleep and my phone in the other room (wife asleep) I would check my settings. If I remember I will post them in the morning. Most of them have not been changed though.

I have those drivers installed AND playback issues. But you should install them anyway.
I'm working out some methods of encoding at the moment and will get back to you. I tried to fight the transcoding, but am starting to give in. The device just doesn't have a lot of headroom as far as playing videos, with currently available players.
Any other thoughts on this or are we all just waiting on the next Core Player update?
Did installing the drivers help you at all?

Sound tweak to up volume?

Hi,
Does anyone know a way to tweak a system file so that Inspire's volume is higher?
I personally find its stock volume rather low, and I want to increase it.
I downloaded Zedge. It is a free app with nice louder ringtones.
Hope this helps!
I'm wanting to up the volume system-wide. But, thanks for the info anyway
Yea, I tested a movie and sling player last night. The media volume was all the way up and it was quite.
I went from iPhone 4 (nice and louad) to Atrix 4g (nice and loud) to Inspire 4g (too quiet).
I am loving the Inspire but the sound volume and battery life are definitely the 2 big downsides of it. Still a winner over the Atrix any day though.
I personally don't have issues with the battery. I've removed all extra stuff. Even before removing them, I was happy with its battery.
It can't be that hard to change the system volume. It's done in every smartphone and OS before. Hopefully, some developer notices this thread and help us out.

I'm half deaf. Need a louder phone please.
same here, the phone volume is too low. Maybe if can acces service codes? I did it on my previous Samsung phone.
Hi, all.
So, I've been doing some digging around, and looks like there are 2 possibilities.
One is to modify the system files manually (which would be very complicated), but I personally prefer this method rather than having to install extra stuff. However, this method is not available to us unless some very smart person shares the method with us.
Two, which seems to be the only viable option at the moment, is DSP Manager. As far as I understand, it used to be available through ROM Manager, but it is no longer there. I saw a thread that said the author was not releasing it anymore because most MOD developers were now including it in their ROMs from the beginning.
So, if we can find a way to install DSP Manager, we may be able to tweak the max speaker volume. But, that's as far as I could find. I'd need someone smarter to look into this.
Hi,
An update and a new idea.
First, DSP Manager doesn't work on Inspire 4G, so don't bother.
Second,
Here's a new idea I have about the low volume sound fix. I just read a comment from HTC employee who said, "The front speaker is for phone calls and the rear speaker is for everything else."
In other words, if we can find a way to keep the front speaker enabled all the time, we should be able to get more sound. I don't know much about what kind of coding is involved in routing sounds from each speaker, but I wonder if this would be an easier hack than trying to increase the entire system volume, which may still feel low volume for as long as we can't get any sound out of the front speaker.
Maybe someone smart can add to this possibility?
#1! I like to use voice recordings as scheduled reminders, and the playback volume out of the rear speaker is way too low.
I did notice the low volume on a movie i downloaded but you never can tell with those sorts of things. Overall the sounds is incredible even through the speakers with (SRS) and dolby mobile.
Could use something to ++output level.
Id like to see an app to change audio volume levels while recording video.
(ive only had the phone a couple days i returned my samsung Cap upgrade for the 4g, forgive me if there is such an app out there)
How often do you go to watch an awesome looking concert video and the sound is trash? It would make for some beautiful recordings i think. I have yet to test this one, but the Captivate could not record decent sound at all in loud environment.
I personally have come to believe that it is really not that the "volume" is low but rather a "wrong" speaker is being used. I mean, if the main speaker is on the back facing away from us, of course we don't hear much sound. If you flip the phone while playing music or video, you'll notice that the sound is actually loud enough. So, if we can enable the front speaker for normal use, I really think that it'll be just fine.
about every HTC phone has a quiet speaker. but cyanogen typically always includes the audio boost add-on. so i'd just wait for cyanogen 7 to include it, and your troubles will be solved.
well, even if the volume is boosted, as long as the sound is coming out of the rear speaker, if you place your phone on its back on a table or something, the sound will still suffer. It makes more sense to find a way to enable the front speaker.
Most of all phone have a rear facing speaker. But some phone are loud and some are not..

No, they don't lol. (you may be right if you are talking about specific brand or series, but certainly not "most of all phones").
I just came across something that may be relevant to the audio routing, but I'm not smart enough to figure them out. If anybody wants to take a look at it, it would be great:
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/media/AudioManager.html
There are several lines there that talk about Routing.

This may sound ridiculous but works!
Hi, all.
I just came up with a very simple workaround for "only when you are watching a video or something."
Now, you're gonna probably laugh, but trust me. It really works.
Just play any video, and hold your phone as if you are scooping water. The key is the left hand. When you cup your left hand around the rear speaker, it creates a echoing chamber that redirect all sound toward you. You'll be able to hear the sound much better.

[Q] Better bluetooth stereo quality

Got a pair of bluetooth headphones to use while I am riding my bike. The audio quality is very poor, is there anything I can do to improve it? Drivers, fixes etc.

What set did you get? I use the Plantronics Backbeat 9xx (913 i think) and the quality is fine (and I'm pretty picky with audio quality). It also adds track skip, volume, mic right at the earpieces. Perfect for workouts.
Not yet (maybe not ever?). The problem is with the bluetooth drivers that Samsung uses. Apparently they have a low bitpool value hardcoded, which means bad sound quality for the end user. I was very much frustrated with the sound quality myself (coming from ipod touch which had crystal-clear lagless bluetooth audio) but there is nothing we can do ATM.
The only fix is a part of CyanogenMod, as far as I know. I think some devs are working on (or will be working on) bringing CM to Charge, but when or if it'll happen is yet to be seen.
Take a look here for more info:

Good to know. I had a feeling that it was a poor driver issue. I have the motorola sd90. just get muffled sound and really poor bass. I get pretty good sound out of them from my laptop so I guess it's more of the phone.

Awesome video sound improvement with MIUI

Hi all,
I'm making this thread just to let everyone know, that I discovered a DRAMATIC sound improvement when recording video on MIUI 1.9.30, which is my current rom.
I've done a lot of videos of myself playing the cello lately. Until now I've been on VoidU rom and the sound of the videos was very bad. It seemed clear that the internal microphone of the Desire S is not capable of recording the loud sound of a cello being about 2 meters away from it. The result was a crackling and strongly distorted sound.
It was a very pleasant surprise to hear my today's recordings, as the sound is incomparably better then it was before. It's actually good enough for publishing on youtube. I would never imagine that this could be possible just changing software.
(Didn't test it with other roms yet.) Thanx SuperKid!
.
Good to hear , Will some time try MIUI,
Till then m good with Runny1.5

Any idea what exactly the changes were? were they in ROM base or in the Kernel? and more importantly can they be moved into a Sense ROM! like VoidU!!!
Yea, thanks for posing these questions for me.
Well I don't know if this is ROM or kernel. And it might be a little tricky to test, since the kernels of VoidU and MIUI aren't interchangeable, right?
What I can do is try MIUI with TIAMAT in the same conditions.
As to what happened with the sound exactly, my impression is that the MIUI ROM might somehow guard the recording process so it does not get overexcited. It sounds like it is cutting off the excess sound input and maybe even compressing it, so it fits the possibilities of the recording device.
I thing this is often used in pro. sound recording, and the device (or software) is called compressor. You can set a loudness limit and the device takes everything that exceeds that limit and makes it quieter.

Try to post some bits of the vids later so you can see the difference.

I don't know if anyone tried this, but recording a video while having your earphones plugged into your Desire S improves the audio quality as well.
Too bad there isn't any news on increasing FPS, or is there?

Oreo just dropped for Tmobile

More news after reboot
The download was very fast and the whole install took about 10 minutes.
After a couple of reboots, everything is running slugish. This is probably expected since we have been on 7.0 for over 2 years.
This phone is doing a lot of thinking & that is just probably why it's sluggish.
I imagine that after a day or so the speed will increase.
Every thing looks good so far!
Settings
Here is the proof of the install.
Yep just got it. So far so good.
Thanks for heads up. Downloading now, hopefully performance will.improve as phone has been sluggish last couple months.
Audio : Bluetooth
I am loving the improved sound with Bluetooth speakers. There are some codecs that are very impressive. How can we configure them?
Do we need some special app to load & configure them?
SBC – the standard mandatory Bluetooth audio codec. Can vary greatly in quality depending on the capabilities of the connected hardware. Adds significant lossy compression in many cases, as its bit rate ranges between 192 and 320 kbps.
AAC – A popular license-free lossy codec used by many services, including YouTube. Wireless version typically supported by Apple products. Standard 250 kbps transmission offers compression comparative to a high-quality MP3.
atpX – Qualcomm’s proprietary codec that uses differential sub-band transmission to save on data-rate, unlike ACC or MP3. Offers a fixed 4:1 compression ratio versus CD quality files, transferring at 352 kbps.
aptX HD – a higher quality version of aptX that offers support for 24-bit files at 48 kHz. Is still lossy, but transmits more data at 576 kbps.
LDAC – Sony’s proprietary Bluetooth codec. Like SBC, it comes in a selection of quality options but these range from 330 kbps up to 990 kbps, meaning it potentially transfers the most data out of every Bluetooth audio codec available. The highest quality option supports 24-bit, 96 kHz audio.
Source
Great find on bluetooth capabilities. The option to set this is located in settings, developer options.
Yep, have it already
