[Q] Quick Noob Question about upgrading to 4.4.4 and Root - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, first post on xda. Lurked for over two years and well, you gotta start somewhere
I'm on rooted stock 4.4.2 ROM with unlocked bootloader.
The OTA is constantly reminding me to update to 4.4.4. I'd like to, but I need to know if I can safely re-root after upgrading and wether anything that uses root right now will break or if they'll just continue working after a sucessful re-root. I'm thinking about Busybox, xPosed framework with GravityBox and MotoGuide.
Help me?

After the update you will be able to root again. If you flash Phil's recovery it will ask you to root the device for you.
I would recommend to uninstall xposed and its modules, unroot the device and flash stock recovery before installing the update. You'll need to reinstall your root apps after. Others have had success installing updates using CWM or TWRP but it didn't work for me so.

Nope, since we do not have available an unlocked bootloader yet. Once that's availble, you can install custom recoveries and custom ROMs. We're all waiting for that to happen, so join on in. Will take just a few weeks, as most think.

The new firmware will delete root access, but for now, you can just reroot by following the same procedure again. Do not forget to uninstall Superuser/Busybox/SuperSu/whatever other trace may remain, and reinstall from the Play Store as necessary, and you'll be fine.

[Q] What will I lose if I root?

Ok so I am thinking about rooting my Nexus 5 right now and I will install xposed framework after I root. I have not gotten the 4.4.1 update yet for my Nexus 5 so if I root right now, will I still get the update over the air. I am not installing a custom ROM. I just want to install xposed framework and that is all. So will I still get OTA updates from Google if I do that.
Nothing?
Well for starters your phone will be wiped clean when you unlock the bootloader. So if u decide to root, backup what you want to save. Second, as long as you keep stock recovery, stock kernel etc... You should be able to take the ota update. Although after taking it you'll need to reroot. It may be easier just to root, and flash the stock rooted rom

maybe the warranty? but I think that you can restore it by re-locking the phone

You will lose all the data on your phone. As soon as you unlock the bootloader the phone wipes all the data.
You can't modify anything in system and get updates (well you'll get them, they just wont install). You will have to go back to stock before you can install updates from google.

Are stock rooted ROMS easily available for the Nexus 5? Also lets say I root and install xposed framework right now. Later on I want the 4.4.1 stock rom on my phone. When I flash the 4.4.1 stock ROM on my phone, will I still have xposed framework?
Yes they're pretty much the first ROMs available after an update is released. And no,you'll have to reinstall xposed framework. But its easy to do

[Q] Which root method best for unlocked Dev Ed currently on 4.2.2?

I've read through several root threads (mos by jcase I think) but want to confirm as of today which is best to root an unlocked dev ed maxx that is currently on 4.2.2?
Really appreciate any help -- thanks!
EDIT: My goal is to be rooted on 4.4 / 19.6.3
Since you're unlocked you can root in custom recovery. See second part of this guide

Thanks for the quick reply -- sorry, I forgot to mention that my goal is to be rooted in 4.4.
Do I upgrade to 4.4 first and then root? Or root in 4.2.2 then upgrade to 4.4?
Links appreciated but I'll take any help you can spare...
Thanks!
I'd upgrade first. You can root 4.4 and future updates in twrp. That's the beauty of being unlocked (on this device at least) not having to wait for root exploits.

Okay one more question please -- took the update and rooted with TWRP everything worked great EXCEPT I just realized it didn't update to 4.4, it just updated to a higher 4.2.2.
Now the update for 4.4. is downloading OTA.
Can I install this OTA, having installed TWRP and rooted? Or will that brick my phone?
I feel like you need to be 100% stock to take OTA's, no?
If so, how do I get back stock?

You'll need to flash the stock recovery back to get the ota to install. Once you're on 4.4 there's yet another 4.4 update/patch that came out a few weeks ago. Might as well Install that too before flashing twrp again.

[Q] How to Upgrade from Kit Kat to Lollipop?

I'm on Kit Kat, rooted with Towelroot, but have no unlocked my bootloader. I have Flashify and TWRP installed.
My understanding is that the OTA update will fail since I'm rooted.
So how do I update? Do I
A) Unroot (and if so, how?) and perform the OTA, then get root under Lollipop?
B) Flash a complete ROM of the latest stock version? Will I need to re-root if I do?
C) Something else?
Thanks in advance!
If this has been answered in another thread please provide the link. My searching didn't turn up anything.
What does your system say about updating Android? Anything?
Well disregard this thread. The first update was a minor one that removed root, so I went ahead and installed Lollipop (5.0.1) when it offered the next update (immediately).
Guess I'll see what I have to do to root Lollipop.
Thanks for the response though.

[Q] Quick info about rooting/unlocking bootloader/etc.

Just a quick question here since I don't see a guide anywhere. My brother is getting an M8 from Verizon in several weeks (he's getting a new contract and the M8 looks like the best free/cheap phone available). So I can assist him, what is the current status on unlocking the bootloader and rooting? Looks like it will ship with Lollipop according to Verizon's site.
I don't need detailed guides on doing everything (I'm familiar with the concepts; I have a Nexus 5 myself), but just a quick "Bootloader can't be unlocked, so no root" or whatever the case is would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Sunshine 3.x now unlocks/ s-offs VZW M8 with LP 5.0
Not 100% on rooting.
I literally just flashed TWRP to mine via ADB fastboot method about 4 minutes ago and am running a stock nandroid backup as I type this.
I was on 4.4.4 when I S-offed, then took the LP update to 5.0, then flashed TWRP recovery (right now) in order to flash SuperSU. That's about all I know. Everyone said to S-off BEFORE taking the OTA update in order to obtain root on LP.. so I did. Now i'm just trying to figure out where I get this SU to install for perm root. Now your guess is as good as mine for why I needed to S-off BEFORE taking the OTA. The new sunshine that was released (3.x) is able to S-off after the update so I'm really not sure what the difference would be whether you S-off on 4.4.4 or 5.0 and then do the same process to install supersu. Anyways, hope this kind of helps.
Oh, and I suppose if you S-offed , you could flash TWRP then just install a pre-rooted stock ROM which i'm sure is somewhere out there.

Ahhhh.. OK.
Glad I didn't update then before I ran Sunshine. I'm sure Jcase and his buddy are working on getting VZW ironed out soon. Just finished Flashing TWRP, and to the OP.. when you flash TWRP, it roots it for you pretty much, it must be bundled in there. After I made the backup, and went to reboot it asked if I wanted to install superSU since it saw I wasn't rooted yet. It did and I just rebooted and it was there, updated the binaries no problems and now I'm on stock VZW LP-rooted.
