Ok...I've discovered that instead of a battery pull you can hold up on the volume button the camera button and the power button and you will reboot the phone. Works anytime and comes in handy if your phone freezes.

So I did this and I love being able to do this, especially testing my ROM out when I make small changes, but one correction, this shuts down the phone, not reboot. Either way, great find.
I actually like it turning off so I can easily boot back into clockwork to flash things.
That's awesome. Tho it did reboot, didn't shut down.

It's surprising that this is news... I thought by now everyone would have known about it.
Wanna know another little trick? Hold all four buttons (Vol. up, vol. down, camera, and power) and you'll be thrown almost immediately into recovery.

I just tried this (with it plugged in charging, no less) and confirms that this works.. and the BEST part is that it's not just 'recovery' it throws you into clockwork recovery
keep holding them and you'll get there.. (took like 2 seconds I believe)
I find this annoying. My phone reboots at least once a day while I'm at work because of this. I keep it in the stock samsung holster, and if I lean down to pick something up off of the floor, shortly later I'm greeted to my phone rebooting.

Nice now i dont have to shutdown first, thanks for this and thanks OP For the tip on reboot.
So it's tap vol up, power, and camera to reboot. And hold the same three to power off? That's great news I already had to order a new back cover because of having to do all those battery pulls for my stupid mistakes.

Nope, tap, press, or hold, whatever you do you will be shuting down your phone, and it is not just a shut down it is essentially cutting the power so it is instant.
interesting.... if you do the 3 button reboot, and phone is pluged into power, it simply turns off and all you see is the battery charging icon.... if it's not plugged in, then it will reboot
This is great, and all, and if it works when the OS is hung or crashed, it's the only solution.
However, I find the Reboot Widget from marketplace (need to be rooted) to be much easier in most cases.

Ah there's my problem I only tried while my phone was plugged in.
I seem to have a problem with my power button. I think. My phone will occasionally shut off and vibrate once every 2 seconds, as if the power button is being held down. Taking the battery out and putting it back in stops the vibrations, but then after starting to turn on it will go back into the steady vibration.
I've noticed that sometimes when it's turned on it'll go into little fits where the power button menu will pop up rapidly. This usually precedes when it shuts off.
The severity of these "fits" varies. Sometimes it just requires popping the battery out and putting it back in, but sometimes it lasts for hours.
I don't know if it's a power button problem, or something in the wiring. I don't have a case on it, just a stick on skin. If you need anymore information, I'll gladly supply it.
Any information on what is happening and if theres a fix, would be greatly appreciated.

You would have to open up the case and look at it. Could be some debris in there, button could be getting jammed. Few things could be happening.

I know I'm reviving an old thread but I came here trying to find a solution and I figured out what mine was.
It was indeed the power button, I took the phone apart twice, first time not messing with the power button, second time I pressed it quite a few good times and blew on it to try to blow anything out of there and to get my spit in it to lube any parts that needed lube...or what not.
I put it back together and still...same problem, it'd turn on when I put the battery in or plugged in a power source and then roughly 2 seconds later, it'd restart. The most I could get was maybe a full 10 seconds (but never further). But I realized that if I held the power button at the perfect time after the phone vibrated to turn on, it would go those 10 seconds way more often. So I mashed the hell out of my power button and shook and pounded the phone and it booted it up, was able to back up all my stuff and restore it. Now waiting for the replacement.
Why I told this like a story? I don't know...
OMFG this is exactly what is happening to me!!!! So exact. Lol any solution?!?

Same exact thing happened to my girlfriends Infuse, faulty power button. I took it completely apart and tried to clean the contacts between the power button and the motherboard as well as any junk that may have been lodged in the button itself. Unfortunately the cleaning didn't work, what did work is I took the god damn phone and whacked it against the counter top a few good times and it has worked ever since. Do I recommend doing this? NO! this actually worked for me lol. id hit the phone on my hand and it would fix my stuck power button.
I have been rooted and using various roms for over half a year. I was using my phone and than my power button stopped functioning out of nowhere. I took my battery out and put it back in and it turned back on but the power button would sometimes work and sometime not. So I decided to reflash the rom so when i clicked the reboot button in my toggles and told to to go into recovery it turned off and did not go into recovery mode but instead it flashed the samsung logo briefly and said recovery booting at the top but it does not boot into recovery. I took the battery out and put it back in and it does the same thing just flashes the samsung logo once with the recovery booting and than goes dark. All this happened in 1 hour.
So i cant boot into recovery or get into download mode, and odin does not recognize that there is a device connected.
Help if you can.
So no lights at all? Take battery out. Hook phone into computer. What happens? Does you computer recognize it?

Sometimes when I plug my charger in or plug it into computer the orange charging light flashes for a couple seconds and than nothing, and no the computer does not recognize a device. I tried charging the phone all night still nothing.

Unfortunately no. Plugged it into computer, press power button and it vibrates one second and charging LED (red) flashes once and thats it. Nothing shows up on device manager.
Plugged it into computer and turned ODIN on... no result. It doesnt recognize that there is a phone connected.
Guys please help a guy out? ive gone through so much posts lately on Google, please if anyone knows even a hint of something that could help please mention it
Thanks ahead of time
Tried another S3 battery, maybe that was the problem but no. Pressed power button, Samsung logo flashes for less then a second. Then everything goes blank.
Next time i hit power button with this battery from another S3, all that happens is that it vibrates, the red LED flashes once and thats it.
Have also tried all combinations of Power+Vol+Home. They get only a vibrate from the phone as if only hitting the power button.
So you need to reboot into recovery but it won't.. Hmm my volume button is broken so I downloaded Quick Boot from the store and it let's you boot into recovery pretty easily. If it does the same thing you described then.. Dunno.. Flash a new recovery or bootloader with Casual one click root unlock and recovery. Hopefully you saved an image file on your pc.

it sounds like the power button is your problem, like its stuck down. Can you tell if its sticking out about normal or does it seem shallow(like depressed a bit)?
edit:
I would try to place the phone on a good flat, hard surface and then try to boot into recovery and just barely put pressure on the power button in the process. Not trying to sound smart mouth but hold vol+ with left thumb and use any right finger to hold home then use left pointer to press power. Thus you can use just the minimum amount of pressure on the power button.
If you get any further than you have been , I would bet on the button being bad. If not it may have been a partition messup. I was using the trim feature and mine goofed up the partitions and had to repartition in odin and everything. If it isnt the button find a jtag and have it done.
Good luck, Hope you can get it fixed.

Ok I did that but no results...
But I did figure something out that I didn't know: ok so when the phone is lying flat on its back and I tap it moderately 3 times very quickly the phone vibrates once and flashes just the Samsung logo for a split second.... That happens without even pressing any of the buttons. And then everything goes black. Sometimes it will do the vibrate and Samsung logo and then the "Samsung Galaxy S3" logo will show for couple seconds. Then like always it goes black.
So this must mean some of the hardware inside is disrupted. Its been dropped many times on ground. Never cracked screen but it must be the hardware inside. Does that sound logical? Or does someone else have a theory?

sounds like power button is broken, only you know if your comfortable taking it apart. But there are videos that are good. If you think you can what do you have to lose? It ain't working now so what's the difference. I would look for some teardown videos and power button replacement vids and see if you want to try. Find out how much a button would be and then decide.

I'm ready to throw my phone out the second story window.
When I press the power button to turn off the phone's screen, it goes dim then comes back on again. I can't get the screen to go completely dim until the 15sec of inactivity are up. I was so fed up I was ready to return my phone to stock but it kept turning off when I started the phone in download mode. I have a hard time restarting the phone and it's not rebooting into recovery mode unless I manually hold down all three buttons.
I've tried flashing different ROMs, different GAPPS, wiping, and formatting. I've even formatted the SD card twice.
I'm in a real clusterfrick. Any help is welcome! Thank you!!!

Looks like you have done everything possible to remedy the situation and if going back to original factory stock doesn't help, maybe the phone is the issue, not the software. Did you just go back to stock 4.3 or did you try to go back to 4.1.2?

AMAZING!!! Thank you!!!!
My Nexus 5 just crapped out.
Phone constantly reboots every second.
It turns on, shows the Google splash screen, then turns off, then Google Splash screen then turns off.
It happens very quickly stays on the splash screen for about 1 second then turns off.
If I hold down the Volume Down button, it shows the Bootloader for 1 second or less then shuts down.
If I hold the power button long enough it'll turn off. Now ANY power source plugged in or a QI Charger, it'll turn on and keep powering off and on and off and on again.
Now it actually won't turn back on without any power source. Not sure if it's out of battery or not, but it's not helping, since if I plug it in, it turns on then turns off right away, over and over and over and over again. No way to charge it like normal.
Anyone have any ideas? It's running stock with xposed mod.
I've never had this happen of all the Nexus phones I've had and others.
Phone was working fine today then I went to open the camera and it rebooted and then this.
Wow, yup just I suspect, I think power button is messed up.
I have a rubberized case on it, if I tilt it sideways with power button facing down, and just keep banging the side of the Nexus 5 on the table, it will power up and boot up properly.
Once I stop, power menus shows up and or it'll hard reboot.
The power button itself doesn't feel broken, when I press it I can feel it being pressed.
Now I have to figure out how I can wipe and lock the bootloader while doing this....
