Phone does not turn on! Virus?? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I have been rooted and using various roms for over half a year. I was using my phone and than my power button stopped functioning out of nowhere. I took my battery out and put it back in and it turned back on but the power button would sometimes work and sometime not. So I decided to reflash the rom so when i clicked the reboot button in my toggles and told to to go into recovery it turned off and did not go into recovery mode but instead it flashed the samsung logo briefly and said recovery booting at the top but it does not boot into recovery. I took the battery out and put it back in and it does the same thing just flashes the samsung logo once with the recovery booting and than goes dark. All this happened in 1 hour.
So i cant boot into recovery or get into download mode, and odin does not recognize that there is a device connected.
Help if you can.

So no lights at all? Take battery out. Hook phone into computer. What happens? Does you computer recognize it?

Sometimes when I plug my charger in or plug it into computer the orange charging light flashes for a couple seconds and than nothing, and no the computer does not recognize a device. I tried charging the phone all night still nothing.

Unfortunately no. Plugged it into computer, press power button and it vibrates one second and charging LED (red) flashes once and thats it. Nothing shows up on device manager.
Plugged it into computer and turned ODIN on... no result. It doesnt recognize that there is a phone connected.
Guys please help a guy out? ive gone through so much posts lately on Google, please if anyone knows even a hint of something that could help please mention it
Thanks ahead of time

Tried another S3 battery, maybe that was the problem but no. Pressed power button, Samsung logo flashes for less then a second. Then everything goes blank.
Next time i hit power button with this battery from another S3, all that happens is that it vibrates, the red LED flashes once and thats it.
Have also tried all combinations of Power+Vol+Home. They get only a vibrate from the phone as if only hitting the power button.

So you need to reboot into recovery but it won't.. Hmm my volume button is broken so I downloaded Quick Boot from the store and it let's you boot into recovery pretty easily. If it does the same thing you described then.. Dunno.. Flash a new recovery or bootloader with Casual one click root unlock and recovery. Hopefully you saved an image file on your pc.

it sounds like the power button is your problem, like its stuck down. Can you tell if its sticking out about normal or does it seem shallow(like depressed a bit)?
edit:
I would try to place the phone on a good flat, hard surface and then try to boot into recovery and just barely put pressure on the power button in the process. Not trying to sound smart mouth but hold vol+ with left thumb and use any right finger to hold home then use left pointer to press power. Thus you can use just the minimum amount of pressure on the power button.
If you get any further than you have been , I would bet on the button being bad. If not it may have been a partition messup. I was using the trim feature and mine goofed up the partitions and had to repartition in odin and everything. If it isnt the button find a jtag and have it done.
Good luck, Hope you can get it fixed.

Ok I did that but no results...
But I did figure something out that I didn't know: ok so when the phone is lying flat on its back and I tap it moderately 3 times very quickly the phone vibrates once and flashes just the Samsung logo for a split second.... That happens without even pressing any of the buttons. And then everything goes black. Sometimes it will do the vibrate and Samsung logo and then the "Samsung Galaxy S3" logo will show for couple seconds. Then like always it goes black.
So this must mean some of the hardware inside is disrupted. Its been dropped many times on ground. Never cracked screen but it must be the hardware inside. Does that sound logical? Or does someone else have a theory?

Of course it sounds logical. You really should have mentioned the "dropped many times" right up front. No doubt it is physical damage. sucks sir. in the future, invest in a good case if you tend to drop your phone often....just sayin. or learn to not drop it? i don't know. sorry about your luck sir.

You think maybe I should take apart the phone? Maybe I'll visibly see something disconnected and fix it.

If you are smart enough to know what to look for, sure. Otherwise. I revert to my recommendation...

sounds like power button is broken, only you know if your comfortable taking it apart. But there are videos that are good. If you think you can what do you have to lose? It ain't working now so what's the difference. I would look for some teardown videos and power button replacement vids and see if you want to try. Find out how much a button would be and then decide.

Can't get into download mode

First I want to say I love this forum.
I believe I have a unique problem. I searched around on forum and couldn't find my issue.
My infuse is completely unmodified, I haven't rooted or flashed any roms. My phone suddenly restarted today and now it just keeps flashing the "SAMSUNG" logo on the screen over and over every 2 seconds. I tried putting it into download mode but the problem is once I put the battery, it automatically turns on ... So theres no time for me to do the sequence. I'm not sure how else I can get it into download mode. I have all the odin software and stock roms from the other threads.
Any help would be greatly appreciate. Thanks for help in advance.

Alright, its been a while since I've troubleshot on stock but, here goes. If you can't get download mode,(Pull battery, reinsert, hold both VOL +/- while plugging in USB) try this first:
Make sure the device is off.
Power it up and repeatedly tap the far left soft key until the phone boots.(now i'm not 100% sure, but I think the ATT bootanimation has to show up first before tapping, but trying won't hurt)
If that doesn't work you could try a hard reset: (Warning, this WILL erase all data)
To make my life easier, I'll just link the how-to's lol:
LINK
LINK
Now these have slightly varying methods, so I linked both. Good luck!
Hopefully you have already fixed the problem by now, but one other thing to consider is the possibility that the USB port is messed up. This can happen pretty easily on these phones if you use a USB cable other than the one that came with it. It is possible for the phone to get confused and think that there is a cable plugged in even when there isn't. I have this problem with one of my Infuses and it causes the exact same symptoms you have described. I usually just plug in the original cable and wiggle it around a little, then unplug it and try it again.
In my case the problem started when I unknowingly plugged a Logitech USB cable covered in mustard into my phone. Don't ask how it got there because I sure as heck don't know. All I can say is I now keep my cables away from my three year old.
I tried all those suggestions and it didnt work, please keep in mind that once I put my battery in it AUTOMATICALLY turns my phone on. Theres no way for me to have it off with the battery in. So I cant hold the buttons down while its off and then plug it in. Or do recovery mode or anything. I am using the cable that came with the phone.
Also, all it does is the samsung logo comes on the screen for 2 secs then goes off for 2 secs and that process repeats for eternity... When I plug it in the battery charge meter starts to come up and then the screen goes black, and then that repeats the same way ...
Before you guys suggest to take it back to AT&T i already did. They said it needed to be reflashed ... So they tried, and told me that they couldn't even do it because it was messed up so bad. And they said they couldn't replace it because I have a small crack in my screen EVEN THOUGH he told me that he knows that isnt related to the problem! Are you kidding me? Great way to treat loyal customers ... AT&T are cheap bastards.

Try these steps.
1. switch off the phone.
2. remove the battery.
3. connect the phone to computer (without battery)
4. press both volume up and down buttons.
5. put the battery and wait to open in download mode.
Yeah I have the same problem, and it is my first and only att phone without an upgrade till 2013. If you figure out how to fix it please tell me.

Yes it makes clicking sound when I press. Is JIG is the only option left ?

Just a quick review of download mode: Pull battery.
Connect USB to phone from a known working USB port on computer. (Infuse drivers installed.)
While continuing to hold down both volume up and volume down (no power button),
insert battery.
Should see download mode screen after 2-4 seconds.
If no, a jig is the least expensive option at around $2. You can also send it to a repair service, think I read that is around $50.00. Good luck.

[Q] Bricked Nexus S. Faulty power button?

Hi guys.
I noticed a few weeks ago my power button started to work when it felt like it. Sometimes it would be fine, other times it would take about 30 presses before it registered I was attempting to use it..
Now it has completely failed.
The phone is currently off, whenever I try to press the power button it never turns on. But as soon as I attach a charger to it (AC and USB), without even pressing the power button, the phone vibrates and the google screen flashes up, but never gets past that screen.
If I hold the volume up button as I attach a charger it attempts to enter recovery/bootloader mode(?), but freezes as soon as it comes on. No buttons work and it requires a battery pull to turn it off.
The phone is also not recognised by my computer, or by odin, or anything.
Not really sure what to do. Would try and flash things back to stock, but can't find a way to do that. Not really sure it would help either?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance
Oh and I looked through current threads and searched on google but I couldn't find anyone with a similar problem :/
It seems, your power button is constantly pressed. Maybe you dropped it? You should try to carefully move the button in every direction instead of pressing it, hopefully it clicks back to its right place. Other option is taking it back to the shop, and get it repaired. It's a hadware problem, so you won't be able to use neither recovery nor the ROM. The bright side is, that probably it's an easily repairable problem, and won't take too long

Stock ICS has a feature to wake the screen using the vol rocker.
And you can search the market for "Lock screen widget" to shut the screen.
In this case you minimize the need for the power button..That what I was doing..

[Q] Phone won't boot into recovery or otherwise

Hi there,
Sorry but I think I finally found the right forum for this and I wanted to take one more stab before kissing this phone goodbye.
I have a Rogers Galaxy SGH-i727R. About three weeks ago, the phone started re-starting on it's own. I though maybe it was a sticky power key and had that replaced. The problem persisted. I then noticed that it was primarily upon receiving text messages that the phone would reboot. So it seemed it was a software issue. I am running the stable build of CM9.
Yesterday the phone rebooted and never got off the angry alien screen. I pulled the battery, charged it etc and still could not get it to fully boot up. I left it for over an hour. I finally decided to call it quits and re-flash the phone. Problem is, it will not boot into recovery at all. When I hold down Vol + - and Power, it jsut goes into a loop of vibrating every three seconds until I let go and then it tries a normal boot again. Once, I briefly got a screen saying I was trying to install custom software and to press volume up to do so, but before I could hit volume up, the phone cycled off.
I should also mention that the four buttons on the bottom of the screen do not work. I accidentally sliced the wires on the side of the phone when opening it up. I use a software button saver widget to access their functions. I wonder if that issue is related....
Thanks for any advice. I would like to get into recovery so I can load a new ROM or a stock ROM.
If you haven't ventured there yet in this forum I'd recommend Vincom's roundup on just about everything http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398. I don't know if it will help much in your situation but it's worth a look. Also, you may want to research usb jigs, not sure if they will work with our devices though ... research is the key word.

All I can tell you is that your problem sounds exactly like a stuck power button. I know you replaced it but all the symptoms you point out suggest stuck power button. Maybe try cleaning it again?

But if it were a stuck power button it would not stay on the loading screen indefinitely, no? If I hold down the power button while booting, it will turn the phone off.
Hold vol +- and pwr until it vibrates let go of pwr continue to hold vol +-. You were letting go of all of them at once going by your described method.

Won't turn on, keeps vibrating

Hey guys, I've had this problem with my galaxy before where it turns off and keep vibrating and the past few times I could just hold the power button and it would finally come back on. This time my phone died and I plugged it in and it just keeps vibrating.. I searched to see if others experienced the same problem and they came across a stuck power button. I blew air into it etc while the phone was together.. That didn't work, I finally just took my phone apart and it doesn't look like the power button is stuck. I got it to come to the ATT logo sign then it just shuts off and it keeps vibrating. I got it to the odin mode but it shuts off if I try to use the volume button. I'm not under warranty, any help would be great thanks!
It's a stuck power button. You probably have to replace it. See vincom's stickies for more info and trouble shooting.

I found the sticky but when you replace the power button do you need to solder it?
I would normally say yes that's its the power button, but he states he got it into dl mode b4 hitting the vol + key, try this from the read this b4 u post sticky
33) Q. how do i test for a stuck "sticky" power button
A. TEST: NO CABLE PLUGGED IN: Remove then reinsert the battery and if the phone turns on by itself and then takes approx 10 sec's to turn off and then starts vibrating every couple of seconds then its for sure a power button problem, its stuck, goto the link in the previous answer for a possible fix.
The key thing you need to establish is if reinserting the battery restarts the phone w/out u touching the power button, if so then the button is stuck

Yes sir, from putting the battery in to vibrate to try to turn on then turn off and start vibrating every two seconds takes about 9-10 seconds. I found two sites with replacement parts, http://www.etradesupply.com/oem-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-skyrocket-sgh-i727-power-button.html and http://www.partshe.com/samsung-i727-galaxy-s2-skyrocket-power-button.html Would I just take the power button of with tweezers?
The button looks soldered on. It not coming off easily with needle nose. Is this normal?

You should use an air soldering iron (used for surface mount components).
Check this video on youtube:

It shows how to replace the power button.

Fixed the galaxay sii vibrating problem
FIXED IT...My phone sat outside all day when it was humid and damp. I had the same symptoms of vibrating a for half a second every 3 seconds. I initially tried opening the back and using a hair drier but that didn't work. I removed all the screws and pried the shell apart reveling the button and used a can of compressed air for 20-30 seconds in 5 second bursts to blow it out. I might have tried tuner cleaner or disc brake cleaner if that didn't work, since those cleaners are or are similar to acetone which is a degreaser and evaporates quickly. (BUT USE GOGGLES WHEN SPRAYING)

Nice. I have used the compressed air too to fix this but the problem does comeback in few days so be ready to replace it at some point.
Does anyone know if mouser electronics has this?
I cannot order from etrade as I cannot ever order from there again and the other one just returns a 404 page.
Fixed that worked
So ran into this same problem on Galaxy S2 Tmobile. Tried a bunch of things like compressed air, taking it all apart etc. The thing that ultimately worked was plugging it into a Car charger. For some reason this reset the issue. I have run into this 2 x now and the first time if fixed mysteriously and this time the car charger did the trick nearly instantly.
I think this problem occurs when the battery runs completely or nearly completely down and it is turned on. Seems to be a bug with the software.
I happened to fix it by hitting around the power button with a hammer, became unstuck. Just use volume buttons to wake, and double tap status bar to sleep on SlimKat. Wouldn't really recommend this method, but it worked for me.
I have similar problems, I'm getting a bootlooping Samsung screen. I tried Odin flash stock firmware. This phone had no mods at all. I've decided to put twrp on it from Odin and flash a rom see if that will work.. How would one flash rom from Odin. I assume it's the same as the firmware.. Please help... Thanks in advance

It sounds like you have a stuck power button which is common on this device. You can get it replaced at a reasonable cost.
You don't flash roms in Odin. You flash them in the custom recovery, twrp in your case.

I'm sure there's a way to get a rom on my SD card from another source, then install it into the s2. Go into twrp and install this way.. How I'm not sure can you advise...
See what makes me think it's not the power button is when in recovery, dl mode or twrp the phone work flawlessly. Not rebooting from there at all... Hmmm

If you can boot into twrp use adb sideload to load the Rom zip. From a Windows cmd prompt type adb sideload rom.zip and then in twrp on the device use sideload. Where rom.zip is the name of your rom zip. You'll need adb on your pc. Google 15 second adb install xda, if you don't have adb.

[Q] Screen flickers, power button doesn't work right - help.

I'm ready to throw my phone out the second story window.
When I press the power button to turn off the phone's screen, it goes dim then comes back on again. I can't get the screen to go completely dim until the 15sec of inactivity are up. I was so fed up I was ready to return my phone to stock but it kept turning off when I started the phone in download mode. I have a hard time restarting the phone and it's not rebooting into recovery mode unless I manually hold down all three buttons.
I've tried flashing different ROMs, different GAPPS, wiping, and formatting. I've even formatted the SD card twice.
I'm in a real clusterfrick. Any help is welcome! Thank you!!!

Looks like you have done everything possible to remedy the situation and if going back to original factory stock doesn't help, maybe the phone is the issue, not the software. Did you just go back to stock 4.3 or did you try to go back to 4.1.2?
I have the same thing man. Your power button is loose. You need to (and I'm not joking) slam your phone down on the power button. Like find a corner on a table and slam the power button down on it a few times. Worked for me.

Thank you for your help. I'm about to slam the phone down on the power button. I don't think it can get any worse!
I didn't respond sooner because I've been using my work phone and forgot to subscribe to my own thread. I'm a mess.
It works. No lie. Just find a sharp corner and (like don't beat the phone lol) just, I'd call it a forceful tap, it down. May take a few tries but you'll get it. Good luck.
