[Q] Would I get a better signal with a 3G modem rather than my Moto G? - General Questions and Answers

Hello to all,
I am planning on going in a location where the 3G signal isn't that good because of the distance to the antenna.
I was wondering if a 3G modem would get a better signal than my Moto G. For example, I was looking into this modem: http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/network-wifi/3520635/tp-link-m5360-review/.
What do you guys think? Does a modem like that get better signal than a phone?

I'm sure it is possible, but I highly doubt it.
Whatever amount of signal you are getting from the tower is all your going to get.
The only way it would work better is if the radio programming is better than your phone. The only way to tell that would be to try it.

I was thinking that because the router/modem doesn't have to be flat like a phone, they could have put some better hardware inside of it, which is bulkier. So this is not the case?

Honestly, it is possible, but unless you actually try it, there is no way to tell.
I have had modems similar to this before and the signal was crap.
There is no good answer here, other than, you will have to test it to know.

Data drops

Okay, so my phone had been connecting to data and then just dropping within a minute and try to reconnect and so on, so I sent it into Samsung. It turns out, all they did was take the update that Samsung had put out while they had my phone and said it was fixed. It may have seemed fixed to them, but it is definitely not. It seems as though it only happens when I'm in a 3G only area which is where I live so I basically cannot use my data at all. I know it works when I leave where I live because I went to Los Angeles last month and my 4G and my 3G were working fine. I just don't understand it. I know it's not because my area has bad 3G coverage cause it's fine. I'm just so flustered. Any help?

Looks like tower problem to me since it works fine in town.
Flash every modem available to see if you can find one that works with your 3G tower. Have seen older radios that worked better with 3G due to the towers being old tech. Since the phone and radios are new may not be able to find radio that works consistently. The 4G will work with with any 4G tower. If not able to get 3G contact Verizon and put in a ticket on your local tower. Hope this makes sense.

Yeah, thanks. I did call them maybe a month ago and the guy gave me my ticket number and everything but they haven't gotten back to me. I'll try flashing older radios and see if that works!

All radios are on Rootzwiki. If radios don't work call them back. Nothing wrong with phone if works in town although also depends how far you are from tower. If any Verizon phone works you have a case for upgrade of tower or phone. If just at home may give you extender. Do not let them charge you for it.

I tried every radio. I think VRLEC was the best. It didn't stay connected but it seemed to reconnect faster than the others after it did disconnect. I guess that's something -_-

This device is solid on 4g and when in a 3g only area...soon as you get to a area where the data switches between 4g/3g/1x it becomes flaky at best no doubt. Beans rom seems to have the most stable data connection whem Im on the outskirts of a solid 4g signal...it is a device issue that should be fixed with a software update at some point. The problem is its easier for verizon to release a device with bugs, then to spend the extra time and cash to R&D and fix them before release date. I know it does not make sense, but think about it from there end. Lets say VZW has a device thats 90% bug free, so they release it to start locking people in on new contracts and rake in the money hoping folks dont complain about minor issues. If folks do comlain, well then vzw will run you thru the mill and send you a refurb, or open a claim ticket...by then after enough time has elapsed and no issue is fixed, they most likely will discontinue the device andoffer you a different one, passing the customer on to a whole new set of problems. Welcome to America, where its a dog eat dog world and we are all wearing milkbone undies.

I flashed the stable version of CM10 last night from stock ICS 4.0.4 and my signal sucks. I tried flashing the new VRLJ1 Radio + RPM and still nothing. I used to get 3-4 bars at home now I barely get 2.
I am looking for a ROM that can fix this problem.
Let me know if you find a fix.
Thanks
You might want to check w/vzw to see if work is being done in your area (towers down, etc). My signal has been solid and improved on eclipse 4/new j1 radio. Was on liquid 7 prior with no issues signal wise. If anything signals are improving.

Great advice to follow, sometimes its not always your radio but rather maintenance, if the problem arose switching to your said ROM, ask in that specific if anyone else has the same problem, or switch between radios and see what works for you. It is known that not all radios are great for everyone, sometimes an old one works better for specific people in different areas

Fwiw- aosp ROMs don't seem to have the signal strength compared to touch wiz ROMs. Until ril and kernel source is released there's going to be this issue. However, after flashing the latest jellybean radio I've had much better data and phone signal reception.

So I should switch to a TW ROM in order for the service to improve?

I to have bad signal. At my house my phone jumps from 4G to 3G. I do not have problems with the phone everything else work flawlessly.
My wife has an old 3G phone (first gen) it works great. My old 3G Driod X gets great signal. The wife got a LG Envy 4G phone a few weeks ago. Always has 4G she even gets 4G on the bottom floors of the hospital. My SIII get no service. I think it is a Samsung thing my self.
Samsung doesn't have the best radios, that's for sure.
That being said TW is definitely the way to go if you're in a fringe area. AOSP just can't do it right yet...which is really annoying...
Why are folks comparing signal bars? Its been said time after time that its meaningless. The only way to compare is go into settings/about device and look up the signal -db. I can gurantee aosp signal is no worse than touchwiz...now in fringe coverage areas i believe touchwiz is still slightly better.

LTE speed question...

Sorry if this has been asked, but I didn't see it posted on here....
So when I'm in the Speedtest app, I can changer servers and there can be quite a difference in speeds...So I'm curious is this something that can be done with the phone, changing server to increase DL/UL speeds, as well as ping times?
Again, I truly apologize if this is redundant, if so, please delete this thread...
Thank you in advance for any help,
Chris
That really don't change anything on your phone, it just changes the server you ping to test speeds. Some servers are busier than others causing you to get different speeds. What matters most would be where you are at when you test it.

Thank you for the quick answer! Does changing the radio have much of an effect?
Radios are trial and error. You need to find the one that works best for your area. But always try and start with the one that goes with your rom version.

You want radio that matches your tower. I'm in middle of full time 4G and have to drive 50 miles to get 3G handoff so radios are irrelevant. If in area like mine you need to use newest radios cause we have newest or most upgraded towers.

Very poor DBm, asu and WiFi signal after JTAG service.

I just got my phone back from mobiletechvideos JTAG service. Since then, my phone struggles to hold WiFi and 3g. It very rarely pulls 4g. I have tried a factory reset. Also restored my IMEI backup just in case. I have an extra micro sim arriving today. I'm just wondering if I could be missing something simple or is my phone royally screwed?

I did take the phone apart and found that the WiFi connection was loose. I corrected that. I started the phone back up and held the Sim card down in the slot while booting and the phone miraculously got 41asu.....for about 5 minutes and now its holding at a steady 2asu. So, would there definitely be something wrong with the Sim card? Or could the Sim port be going as well? Is there a way to test the Sim connectivity in the phone settings?

The lower the asu the better, in contrast to a higher dbm is a better signal.
2 asu is a pretty strong signal, you should be around -80 dbm.
Edit; Nevermind I mixed it up, a higher asu is better. I still think it's radio related though, but changing your sim card is an easy potential fix.

Well....sim card didn't work. Next I'm going to Odin back to pure stock and see if that helps. I'm starting to think it may be something in the NV items or hardware related. Hope I'm wrong though.

ugh. I really dont want to go messing around with the NV items if that is the case. Im in the process of flashing with ODIN now. I'll update if that works or not.
What is your IEM Showing?
If its been erased, then ODIN to stock firmware probably won;t fix that,
but, have you check your mobile network setting to see if you are on the correct network?
If you are with Verizon it should be set to CDMA, not GSM.

Software is not intermittent. Hardware can be. You may have a broken or loose antenna cable or connector inside the phone.

You will need a device that has the radio ship built in and if I remember right only HTC and some Sony devices have this chip still.
Yeah im using a Samsung Galaxy S3 with cm11. If im not mistaking my phone has radio capabilities since back when i was still using touchwiz it has a radio app.

Then if it is the EU version (US version doesnt have the hardware) Then just grab a fm radio app and hook up some headphones (they are used as antenna) and you should be good to go.
While it's not impossible to cram an AM radio in a phone, getting good reception requires the radio/phone to be stationary in a specific position. Cell phones typically don't remain stationary. So manufacturers, even the few that still put FM radio, simply don't bother. No app can turn on what doesn't exist.
I don't know how it's done in the Philippines (I assume that's where you are - good luck by the way), but in the US, severe weather emergency alerts can be broadcast through regular cellular telephony. Of course, that assumes the broadcast towers are still standing...
Your best bet is to buy a small portable radio. Something that people listen to sports on, or even one of those emergency ones that you can crank to charge up. But it wouldn't surprise me if these are hard to find, considering what's about to hit your islands.
