It was saying sim unlocked for the Z3 Compact via Sony USA. Bootloader unlocked means loading new kernels by going to developer.sony.com.

If you're a developer, an unlocked bootloader is good as you have more tools too use.
As a consumer, if Sony stops updating after a year you have the potential to install homebrew and extend the life of your hardware.
For me, personally, it isn't a big deal. Last phone I unlocked was the HTC One X. Mainly for bloatwear, backups, and updates (I believe I had to flash GTalk to get a video calling version, but that might have been the Xperia Play). But now I can adb backup and disable apps. Google App updates now happen through the Play store so I think the biggest need for consumer unlocking is almost nil. If you keep a phone 3 years+ you may want to unlock for custom ROMs.
It's not like Sony isn't providing the option, just get the OEM model instead of the carrier model.

GIven that it looks like Sony will also be selling an unlocked model, it's highly likely that THAT model will be more "developer oriented" and therefore bootloader-unlocked.
T-Mobile phones generally don't need or want 3rd party ROMs, because T-Mobile users like to hang onto WiFi calling. So it makes sense to lock that bootloader.

In regards to the unlocked version, will ther ebe a 32 gb version? I have AT&T currently and I am not very interested in switching carriers to T-Mo (even if they provide Wi-Fi calling).

Took ages for public release. Took very little fire someone to achieve it. One of the main reasons for delay was that the Z2 was around the corner and some security mobile event. The Z3 should be getting released within a relatively close time for each country.

Truthfully, doesn't matter to me anymore. My Z1s showed me an Android experience I didn't want to modify, if the Z3 is the same then I'm perfectly fine with a locked bootloader. I understand why a lot of people don't like it, but for me, Sony does Android right. The ONLY reason I rooted my Z1s after the 4.4.4 update was when I decided I wanted to screen mirror to my Chromecast (which requires root since it's not enabled on the Z1s by default), and this was at least a month after the 4.4.4 update. I dunno, I just don't want to tinker anymore, and the Z1s works very very well for that. And seeing as the battery life on the Z3 is nothing short of amazing, I'll probably get it regardless of bootloader status. Or maybe I'll get the Z3 compact...

Hello everyone, can i just simply flash N915G firmware via odin to my t-mobile N915T?
No. Different hardware.
You can if you want but it will just bootloop... Might be same hardware but the different models are Samsung's answer to stopping grey imports....
You can't flash different model firmware to your device...
Even if you change that sales code or is it CSC that has to be changed from TMB to XSA??

Sales codes are only used to differentiate minor differences in software (such as restricting access to APNs) within a ROM. Even if it was relevant (which it isn't) once you flash a new ROM on, all that is moot.
Thanks for the fast response!

Doesn't help I'm not a dev, they might be able to do a workaround but unfortunately most experienced devs went with the Note 4. Unless they wish to develope for a device not their own, unlikely, we just have to try ourselves.
I don't have time to learn but the devs with experience might help out a rookie dev... At t65he very least they might point out where the problem might lie...

just thinking to rebrand because of this
I read somewhere that unfortunately the networks need to approve the updates before they're pushed out as well which obviously adds more to the process. It's so ridiculous that Huawei chose to work this way with the UK model.
In the same boat myself, thinking of debranding.
Not totally sure if after de-branding you'll need another code to unlock again if the bootloader locks down.
If that's the case and they stop the codes then you'll end up without the ability to unlock the phone again.

I'm on the C636 model and also having firmware updates withheld..
.. Whats the consensus on which model to debrand to?
Which models correspond to which regions and which are more likely to get updates or other benefits?
Also.. Does this effect the LTE frequencies used or VoLTE and WiFi calling that are sometimes specific to particular regions?

Oooh I don't think I'd get the pixel 2 mate.
Why not debrand your p20 and give it a chance, better things are coming im certain of that, I mean I hop between devices usually once a year or more because I get bored so fast so I know what you mean but I think it'd be too soon to commit to another phone. Unless you can cover the entire cost of the device.
People in the US may buy it, I'd grab an unlock code just in case too :good:
If your hearts set on a pixel, wait for the three, you'll hate having the 2 the second you see their new one. There's quite a difference between them.

yup. some people may not LIKE that you can't root a phone, but the actual percentage of those that won't actually buy the phone for this reason is minuscule.
otherwise, the first time a phone manufacturer sees their sales actually explode after releasing unlooked bootloaders, they'd always unlock it, but that's simply not the case
Ok I think you're being quite short sighted here, allow me to explain a little.
People who root their phones, usually the same ones who mod and develop ROMs and love a tinker, generally speaking the techie in the family, the one who your family tends to turn to when they have an upgrade come around or need something fixing.
Those very same people are more than likely to recommend a phone which has the ability to root, bootloader unlock and modify than they are one which has a completely locked down eco system.
You can say what you like, you can say I'm full of it, but I've seen how people react to a company changing its principles in regards to bootloader unlocking, HTC did this once, they then reversed their decision after seeing an immediate decline in sales, not solely due to the device either, it was the people's influence which caused it, then after two not so great phones later, they were a struggling company, and make no mistake, HTC was a colossal company which was on the up and up, bare in mind they made a lot of what android is today.
Huawei are making the exact same mistake because they overlooked how important that 1% is and the influence that they have over the vast majority of other users who value their opinion and will commit to a purchase on their say so.
It doesn't matter if you believe me, it's just an observation I've witnessed when HTC made the same decision.
Sure they'll continue, they make other components as well as phones, in all fairness they could stop selling phones and still survive.
But for XDA, for development, for what we know today of Huawei devices? Lol If you think it's quiet here on the p20 pro forum, wait til you see the ghost town of a thread there will be for the p30 and pro, I doubt there will be a single ROM, no Dev would be dumb enough to buy it.

Huawei is targeting the Apple clientele. They couldn‘t care less about bootloader unlocking. Look at their advertising, their USP is design, camera, beautiful visuals. They don‘t sell to the tech nerd who wants to flash different software.

Damn.
You may still be able to do something , there was a guide on the above link posted by a user which can unlock the bootloader by all accounts.
This phone is quite a beast and there could and should be another way in the future.
Plus Huawei will probably reverse their decision, that's not confirmed by any means but I think they will.
Funky Huawei ( which is normally not what I'd recommend) will probably see a lot more action now that official unlocks are gone too.
Don't worry too much, if it's still possible someone will find out.

I'm shocked. I received my phone today and wanted to root it and now I read this.
Maybe you guys can help me understand a few things because I haven't tampered with any Android device since 2014.
- will I be fine with the standard pre-installed EMUI or am I missing some really cool and better custom OS when I can't unlock and root my device?
- I've used Xposed, AFWall+, TWRP and XPrivacy on my old phone - are there similar and equally safe tools for unrooted devices?
- How can I make backups without TWRP?
- are there any known workaround procedures known that would let me unlock the bootloader without that code from Huawei? Is it likely that there will be one?
Thanks

Same question here. I have my Twilight P20 Pro lying here, unused since release in fact (so way past the return window) and meant to give it to my wife, but only with Root Tools (Adaway, YT Vanced etc.)
I missed the window since I was traveling and support won't help me.
I get it, my fault for not doing it in time but what now? I wouldn't mind paying for it, as the only other option appears to be selling the device at a huge loss (I paid full retail) and finding a different phone altogether.
Just got my ZFlip3 today and was wondering what's the best way to root it. OEM unlock isn't an option in my developer options but i can still get into download mode by holding volume buttons connected to USB. Total noob here, is there any hope for my us region phone?

No. The only way to unlock bootloaders from the US models in recent history has been a hacked, remote bootloader unlock that they're charging $150 for.
Edit: And the process isn't out for the flip or fold, to my knowledge.
I'm willing to bet Twistedumbrella simply doesn't have a US model.

I call nonsense unless you got a non USA model with the Exynos SOC.
All USA phones have the snapdragon SOC and have for about 5 years.
The snapdragon version has no publicly known method to unlock the bootloader and it definitely doesn't have the button in dev mode.
I wouldn't mind you using screen record and making a video showing us that you have a snapdragon soc AND an unlock bootloader button.

It's hard to believe considering there seems to be no other case of a snapdragon edition having the option. Unlock carrier yes. Bootloader... No.
It just doesn't make sense that you would get a phone that was running the Exynos version of the firmware on a snapdragon device and the device still worked...

It's certainly an interesting mystery. Id love to get my hands on it and try to figure out how it works in the hope that it would lead to a way to unlock the bootloader on current models.
Perhaps the setting is technically there but hidden by a flag and something happened on your device to flip that flag...
You certainly have me very curious despite my skepticism. I'm gonna go digging... I'm also going to start messaging eBay sellers in hope of finding another snapdragon device with the option available.
Then maybe we could enjoy root without the insane method that requires $150. Hell I'd settle for just having TWRP again.
Sorry I'm a little late to the conversation but here's your unlocked snapdragon. Google is your friend.

Sorry I'm a little late to the conversation but here's your unlocked snapdragon. Google is your friend.

Yeah uhm... Plenty of people have spoken to our "friend" Google and haven't found anything.
2 screenshots? Screenshots can be faked. How about before you take a light jab at someone you actually prove them (and everyone else) wrong and post the actual method to unlock the bootloader and get root.
Don't worry we will wait... Of course we won't be holding out breath.
Search the Note 20 Ultra Forum. I don't have the actual method. All I can tell you is I have a Note 20 Ultra 5g from Google Fi, unlocked and rooted. I bought the phone from Google Fi locked. Yes I paid for it but so what, I got the device for half price on a promotion.
Does anything in my post history dictate that I would make some **** up like this? I don't need to impress anybody but spreading misinformation isn't cool. It's entirely possible to get a Snapdragon bootloader unlocked.
Edit: to say the first result is the service I used. Sampwnd

Maybe it was possible to get THAT phone's boot loader unlocked but it's not on any other USA Samsung phone.
Just look at the forums for every USA Samsung phone since the note 8 or 9. Nothing. If it were possible then there would be plenty of roms, kernels etc for USA phones.
So apparently the note 20 ultra fi version can be unlocked... But that doesn't help anyone else.
Wait a min... You aren't talking about that send us your phone crap are you?
