I want to buy this device but it is overpriced here in the uk and t mobile in the usa have it a affordable price. I checked the bands and most uk phones have: 900, 1900 and 2100 for 3g
This one has : 1700 and 2100 for 3g
This concerns me a lot. Can I flash a radio from the original optimistic 2x or something to make it work in the uk? Do you think it will work on 3g out of the box? Some help please.
As you've noted T-Mobile uses non standard frequencies in the states. So, out of the box it's incompatible. As far as flashing an Optimus 2x radio, that appears to be a very bad idea due to file system differences.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've read the answer is no.
According to this:
http://www.wireless.att.com/travelguide/coverage/coverage_details.jsp?CIDL=1305&MNC=CING
uk carriers use 2100 primarily and according to gsmarena the bands this phone supports are:
1700 and 2100 for 3g
Wouldn't it still work out of the box even if it supports 2100 band?

Most uk networks use 2100 band as suggested by at&t . The 1700 band is used by t mo for 4g network according to engadget. Any change of opinion now?

"Band I" is 2100 MHz, which is supported by the G2x and is used all over Europe and Asia.
and according to this http://www.phonearena.com/phones/T-Mobile-G2x_id5272
the G2X supports 2100 UMTS (3G) or am I missing something?
The G2x supports 850/900/1800/1900 MHz for 2G/GPRS only, and supports 3G/4G UMTS/HSPA+ bands I (2100) and IV (1700). The G2x does not support AT&T’s 3G bands.

Yes it should work, I'm currently in Europe and my g2x connects to 3G, but of course there is no 4G...I'll be in the UK in a few days in fact

Thanks to all who corrected me...I was under the impression most of Europe used the same 3G bands as AT&T do here. Stupid US centric assumption...I need to get out more....and keep my mouth shut when I'm not absolutely sure!
Anyway, sorry for my small contribution to internet misinformation...

Both at&t and tmobile phones would be able to get 3g signals outside of the states. I had no problem using my old iphone 3g in Hong Kong,Beijing nor my tmobile blackberry 9700 in Italy.

Yeah...now that's not quite right. Here's the deal:
Most of the world uses 2100 MHz 3G bidirectionally (for both sending and receiving data). This includes England, China, and Hong Kong.
In the U.S. AT&T uses Both 850 & 1900 MHz (depending on the coverage area) bidirectionally. Not compatible with "world standards". The reason you could use you iphone in China is because it has tri-band 3G. Not all AT&T phones support the 2100 MHz band.
T-Mobile uses 1700 MHz for uploads and 2100 MHz for downloading. However, all their current phones have the ability to use the 2100 MHz band bidirectionally when operating overseas.
So to sum it up T-Mobile phones will do 3G overseas, some AT&T Phones will work overseas, but most phones from overseas won't do 3G here.
I hope that makes things a bit more clear; and I apologize again for confusing T-mobile with AT&T in my earlier post.
Hi All,
I recently bought a HTC-Sensation 4G from T-Mobile Store in US.
I also purchased an unlock code in the internet.
Getting to Mexico I started the phone and the voice portion worked great...
BUt Data only hooks up at 2G speed, I have a 3G with unlimited data plan...
I have a friend who has an HTC-INSPIRE and his does hookup at HSPA/HSPA+ (3G).
I was told buy a compnay in Mexico that sell a version of the sensation 3G, which they say does have 850 MHZ radio, that T-Mobile Sensations does not have the 850MHZ Band required...
But in various sights I have seen the spec and it says I qoute "Bands 850, 900, 1800, 1900, 2100, 1700"
I have checd the settings menu etc.. and have not found anywhere to change the setting... can someone help?
Thanks,
Peter Fraga

Sorry, but the US T-Mobile Sensation does not have the 3G 850 frequency. You can't change it. It does support 2G 850, which may be part of the confusion in the frequency listings you've seen. About your only option is to sell it and get the Mexico compatible model.
Your only way arround it is to sell it and get the sensation from bell canada.

Buyer beware.
Lesson one: Every modern phone out there now has quad-band GSM, and will list "850, 900, 1800, 1900" in its frequency list. You know they're talking about GSM (2G) when you see that string of four numbers, because 1800 is a 2G-only band which has never been used for 3G.
Lesson two: If a phone has 850 MHz 3G, you will see the number 850 repeated twice in its band list.
For example:
GSM 850/900/1800/1900 UMTS 850/1900 <--- Yes, buy this phone, because you can see 850 repeated twice.
GSM 850/900/1800/1900 UMTS 900/2100 <--- No, do not buy this phone, because 850 is listed only once and it's under GSM.
Lesson three: If the only band info you can find is 850/900/1800/1900, then the seller is a lazy douchebag who can't even bother to give you the 3G information you need to know.
Hi Guys
At the end of September, I'll be travelling from the UK to the USA (New York City) for a week's holiday. My question is: what's the best pre-paid SIM to grab locally for a few quick phone calls and some inexpensive data access for google maps navigation, etc round the city?
Or would I be better off ditching Google Maps/Nav and installing a navigation solution that doesn't require data access?
A local SIM is no problem as I'll be using my unlocked SGS2.
Thanks.
None of our American friends can advise on this?
I'm wanting to know the same thing.
Just to check though, you do know if it's just for Google Maps, you can download areas of a 10 mile radius in advance?
I'm travelling to California in November and will be looking for a SIM too. I've questioned this seller on eBay -
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300576089037#ht_500wt_1413
It looks like he'll load some credit onto a SIM and send it to you in the UK. $28.49 (£17.33) all told should give 500 meg of data from what I can see.
That could be exactly what I'm looking for. Nice one, bud.
If you plan on using a SIM card you will have the choice of T-mobile and AT&T (major carriers).
http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/go-phones/index.jsp#fbid=oLie2towefI
Things to note:
If you plan on bringing a cell phone (like the SGSII) over from Europe you may not be able to get 3g / 4g network access (frequencies are different).
Frequencies for AT&T (wikipedia):
850 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
850 MHz UMTS/HSPA 3G
1900 MHz UMTS/HSPA 3G
Frequencies for T-mobile (wikipedia):
850 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE
1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE
1700 MHz/2100 MHz UMTS (W-CDMA)/HSPA
Also, be sure to check the network coverage map. AT&T has a larger national footprint compared to T-mobile. (NOTE: AT&T's network can become congested at times -- especially with all those iPhone users)
I'm not a huge fan of AT&T's network (or their plans). That said, if you're only here for a short period of time and you're staying in a major city (like NYC) you shouldn't have a problem with either network. I think it really boils down to 3g/4g support and price.
According to this page, it's quad band and so should access the 3G network without issue.
Network
HSPA+ 21Mbps/ HSUPA 5.76Mbps
EDGE/ GPRS Class 12
Quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900
Quad band UMTS 850/900/1900/2100
I think an ATT SIM coupled with a NYC location should be ok. I'm only in the States for 9 days, so 500MB should do me. I only want to be able to use Google search and upload the odd pic to Facebook. I'll download most of the Google Maps data over the hotel wifi
Lycamobile is a great prepid plan
Hello,
I recommend Lycamobile, it is a great prepaid plan with cheap calls and data.
You can get more informations about it and buy a SIM card on simtravelusa.com with a €2 discount if you tell my sponsorship email [email protected]
I ordered my SIM card on Monday and received it on Saturday, the shipping is very fast.

Yes. I believe the difference is that the US version has the 1700AWS band for T-Mobile. Global has the 2100 band that works better overseas.
Ok thanks I don't have TMobile or one of their subsidiaries anyway and tend to travel over seas in the summer so looks like I made the right choice anyway

I'm thinking of getting the G. I will use it in Germany for 3 wks next year, and use it once (2-3 wks) in Taiwan when I visit my friends and family. I will mostly use it in the US trying out different prepaid plans. I think I'd better get a US version, but is there any chance to get 3G in Europe or Taiwan with a US version?
Thanks.

No with the US version you will NOT get 3G in Europe or Taiwan. You will get 2G however. If you want 3G overseas you need to the global version but you lose T-mobiles AWS band support.
thanks. Is there a phone (moto x, nexus 5, or anything) that support 3G band of all carriers in all regions?

A thing that I've noticed in the reviews is that the US versions of the phone, the cases (at least the black one) has a "metallic" look on that M on the back while the Global / European version that M it's only glossy.
Just got my US 16gb model yesterday via Amazon. Back cover has a glossy black "M" logo, nothing metallic about it.
Bummer to hear this phone won't do 3G in Europe, I went with the USA model since I just moved over to T-mobile, and a lot of the 3G signal in my area is still on 1700 mhz. My AT&T phone was getting 3G in a lot of areas, but just enough EDGE data to annoy me and make me buy the G.

You will not get LTE from either ATT or Tmobile as the Tmobile uses Band 4 AWS for LTE while ATT mostly uses Band 17 700B+C, Band 2 PCS A-F, Band 4 AWS, and some Band 5 CL850.
WCDMA HSPA+ will be fine. T-mobile runs HSPA+21 while ATT runs HSPA+14.4. Both have a day to day prepaid service that you can use to test them out before you choose.
Sorry, I was wrong. Both AT&T and T-Mobile use Band 4 ( and AT&T has band 17) for LTE. I was mistakenly considering only the network frequencies, which was wrong when considering LTE. You won't get LTE on either carrier with the D821, and can only get DC-HSDPA with T-Mobile.
Sorry for the misinformation.
thanks alot all, so there are two options on tmobile for day to day pre pay, will the $3 option work on my international version N5 (D821)? i only see either 2g or 4g in Tmobile? no 3g in tmobile? i am kind of lost on this. T-Mobile's "4G" will include HSPA+ (Upgraded 3g).
Same situatioin !
So happy to find this post !
I have EXACTELY the same "problem"
I do have the Nexus 5 D821 and I'm going to L.A. for one month.
Can you tell me wich solution did you choose and if it worked well for you ?
Also how much do you have to pay for how much Data ?
Thanks so much for your help !!!
I have some friends that went through this when they came to visit the States (also with D821). T-Mobile is your best option. You won't get 4g, but you will get fairly good H+.

Yes I can confirm it totally works !!!
Not for the 4G of course but for me it's fast enough with the 3G.
But maybe you'll have to make your APN manually like I had to do.
By the way I find a GREAT carrier, ultra.me
For $39 you can have :
+ Illimited talk & text
+ Illimited international calls and text !!!
+ Illimited Internet (not 4G)
+ more !!!
