[Q] Poor Battery Life on Nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought my nexus 5 couple of weeks ago and from the beginning I experienced a really poor battery life.
From the screenshot, please other nexus 5 users let me what do you think about this battery performance, is that normal ? When this screenshot is taken about 17% battery was remaining. Please suggest me how can I improve this battery performance.
I am using-
Stock rom
Rooted
Low brightness as possible
Google now disabled
Location off

There's a proper sticky battery life troubleshooting thread for this, it will tell you how to troubleshoot your issues better, no need to open another thread . Please post more detailed screenshots over there
But looking at your 'usage', in your list you seem to have forgotten to add "played Hay Day for 2 hours"
So my simple suggestion to improve your battery performance: don't play Hay Day for 2 hours....

2 hours gaming + 2 hours SOT. Where is the problem?
Need to use Per App Modes to underclock CPU for your games to get more out of it.

Yeah, Thanks for your help, I highly appreciate it and also going to post on your link.
Anyway, the game usage is there so I felt like not to mention that, lol.

Could you please explain what is SOT and how could I use Per App Modes to underclock CPU for gaming. Thanks a lot for your reply.

SOT would be Screen On Time
I imagine what he means is that something like Tasker when said app liek a game is open it underclocks the cpu and then resets it back to normal when you leave the app.
This would stop the cpu being put to max all the time and thus using more power consuming more battery.

I'm still not sure what you'll gain out of posting there though, your battery statistics are very skewed, which is why you have a perception of 'poor' battery life...
It's like driving a car at 100mph with the windows open, the stereo loud with the air con on...and then wondering why the tank is empty and the fuel economy is so bad...
Or leaving all the house lights and appliances on all the time, and wondering why the electricity meter is increasing so quickly.
Playing a mobile game for two hours...........not much different...it makes the battery life look 'poor' by most standards...
In all three cases, it's how you use it which will define how much energy / battery is used. Basic laws of physics
the 'Normal usage' is impossible for any user to define as we're all different, but still I'm going to guess that most of us don't include 2 hours gaming in that statistic

What kind of battery are you currently running on? That may be contributing to the short battery life.

of course, its his battery!
no way it has anything to do with 2 hours of gaming(sarcasm)
seriously though..

Read the first 2 posts in the thread linked above by @eddiehk6
Lots of tips there.
But as others said....2 hours of gaming will make your battery drop like a rock.
There's things in that link that can help you squeak a little more out of your battery....but gaming is the worst thing you can do to your battery life. Nothing you can do about it....except not play. So, keep the screen dimmer....and keep your charger handy.

2+ days and only down to 50% - how's that for battery life?

I promised I would get a pic on here of my battery life. This is using faux's smartass kernel 8.1.1, set to smartass and max clock at 1017MHz. I keep background data off most of the time, along with mobile data, stock rom. If you keep mobile data off, don't forget to disable background data or you will have HTC Sense not responding conflicts.
I have to admit that I didn't play many games or do much calling yesterday, but I played with it quite a bit on Sunday. This should show everyone that there's excellent potential for several days without killing the battery.
Sorry. I should have placed this post here: **HOW TO MAKE YOUR BATTERY LIFE LAST** Members Tips & Tricks
Please feel free to re-locate if you wish. Thanks.
I wish I could get that long..I usually can't last 10 hrs on a normal work day before my battery is toast. Best battery life I've got on mine is 13+ hrs and I was at 30% I have my background data going and 4 email accounts sync'd. Why would I turn off background data? My email wouldn't be pushed to my device now would it?

[Q] Nexus5 SoT Increase

I want to increase screen on time on my nexus5....so far i get 4hrs on elementalx,4.5hrs on franco and 3.5on stock kernel..i love binge watching so i would like to have about 6-7hrs SoT.Also It would b awesome if the settings were related to elementalX as i am currently on it.
why 6-7 hours sot? since you are fantasizing, why not infinite sot?
Yeah, it's called buy another phone
External battery pack. Screens use a lot of power. Other than reducing brightness, there's not a lot else you can do if you've throttled everything CPU related with a kernel config.
Yeah.. @simms22 is right. You're being unrealistic. Without an external battery, you may as well just up and purchase a Nexus 6. Besides, SOT is the biggest battery drainer.
Get as much as you can, reading post 2 here,
[Battery Life Help] Troubleshoot battery issues here!
But yeah, your expectations may be high. You'd need to do everything in post 2. And then only do CPU "easy" activities.
Post 4 shows my times... But that's with good signal, or WiFi. No games. Most services off. And mostly just Tapatalk, texts and light browsing.
So that's all ideal. Your usage and setup may not be.
Thanks
Thanks for the replies...i guess i will order portable charger for now....btw how much mah would u all recommend??
(mini) 2500-3000mAh "stick"/credit-card sized, easy to carry
(larger) 6000mAh for trips/travel/airplane
(humongous) 10k-20k for zombie apocalypse (add a solar pane just in case)

[Q] Bad battery life- help please?

Hi there,
I bought my one plus a month ago, and am getting around 3.5 screen time.
It is disappointing as I see screenshots of people with one plus who are getting 6 -10 hours screen time.
I am on battery saver mode, not using music, whatsApp, wase games or facebook, just a little bit email and browsing.
At night it is not going down a lot, but when I start using the phone, it goes down quite quickly.
(1 percent every 2 minutes, sometimes every minute). It seems to get worse every day.
If I start using GPS or video or music, my battery will be finished by noon.
I replaced the battery, and it is the same.
Attached three screenshots. (Including the night)
Help please?
Thank you!
I share you the same feeling when I see others having impressive battery performance specially screen-on time.
I have exactly the same drain behavior of yours, when my phone in deep sleep its sleep like a baby. but when I wake it its become beast awakening.
I run 3g when I am out and wi-fi at home, also running regular apps, whatsapp,snapchat,2emails,1gmail,instagram,web browsing, auto brightness, greenify. I checked with BBS and WLD but no culprit. I am on stock rom with root for the apps, no system tuning.
So you can see my setup is like most of regular users will do but noticeable difference in term of battery performance. I have no clue
Your battery life is fine, better mine
Who has a lot of SOT usually doesn't turn off/on the screen that much. The secret to achieve a lot of SOT is making long session on the screen (and having few apps, like you). So no worries I'm at 64% now with 1 hour of SOT, but I flash updates (CM 12) everyday and wake up the phone only when I need it, with 1-2 minutes sessions.

That isn't really true, I have over 100 apps installed and I turn my screen off whenever I'm not actually using it. I'm a heavy user. I get roughly six hours of screen on time.

Hi,
Well, at least I am not the only one....
The problem is that it is getting worse every day and now I lose one percent in a minute!
Horrible! I have to charge it twice a day, and I barely use it.
I have no root, am not using any of the apps, only a little bit of browsing, and checking mails.
If I try to use waze for a half of an hour or a little bit of music (max 30min, I get only about 2 hours screen time!
It seems really poor from a brand new battery.
I have no clue what to do, or what is causing it. If anyone have suggestions, i will be glad to hear!
Are you using the stock OPO rom? because I always had a poor battery life, I had all kind of protections to keep battery life but when I saw, from 100 I had 70, it was awful, one solution I saw was to flash one custom kernel, somehow improved my battery life, but the final solution was to use a custom rom, I have experienced better battery life with 5+ roms rather than the ones with 4.x.x, maybe you should taste another android flavor and check if the battery life increases
How hard was it to change the battery? Was it soldered? Where did you get a replacement ?

Sorry, I don't understand much in roms ... I bought the chinese version color os, and changed it in fast boot to cm11.

I believe this is app related. Some apps keep phones awake. I encountered this problem with my S3 because I have lots of apps. But since I made sure I only install apps I absolutely need in my oneplus, I get a fantastic battery life.

I don't have so many apps , and I installed all of them. I keep closing apps that are running on the background through the settings.
The funny thing is that it is getting worse every day.
Now my battery is going down one percent in 30-60 seconds!
I don't know what to do anymore.

No ActiveDisplay + Xposed-MobileRadioBugFix + No Adaptive Brightness = Immortal Moto

I'm getting FANTASTIC battery life! I'm at 63% right now, after close to 12 hours of total time (with 1.5 hours SOT), with an estimated 20 hours left. Standby time is the key here, when I am not using the Moto...the battery just stops in time. It's wild.
I will have to say with the following...
Active Display Disabled < Not necessary
Adaptive Brightness Disabled < around 10% to 15% brightness is honestly totally fine for outdoor use. It's crazy. I use 1% to 5% at night.
Xposed Module: MobileRadioBugFix < Most important!
My Moto X is now immortal.
GSam Battery Monitor is showing on average 2.0% to 3.0% loss per hour when I am using the phone.
While SOT does slowly kill it, standby time is just crazy now. When I lock the screen, it's almost like the battery gets frozen in time.
For anyone who is struggling to get through a day, try these stuff out!
Men, I don't need to fool with it. 20 hours a day before plugging it in is fine for my needs.
Stock out of the box after a week of power cycles.

This is terrifying. Coming from a oneplus one where I was used to getting 6 hours sot over 18 hours. I switched to a oneplus 2 and have only been getting 3 hours sot over the course of a day, thinking that's terrible. Sounds like the Moto x Pure isn't for me, which is a shame because I really do love the Moto features and way it feels in the hand.
dam i didnt wana root but xposed is great so far my battery is lasting me day, i will be on my 3rd power cycle today lets see how it goes....

You know that module doesn't actually cause a change in battery life? It simple adjusts the calculation of battery drain due to mobile radio. It will not, in any way, cause your battery to last longer.

The tabulation of what was being measured as battery use got stuck counting battery use as being caused by the mobile radio. this module just affects how battery stats are counted.
We shouldn't have to root to get great battery life. Just disable Moto Display, keep brightness low, and control when apps like Facebook sync. Android M will definitely bring improvements.
Not to mention, 6+ hours SOT is ridiculous. Put down your damn phone.

With my OPO and Kitkat at my last job I used to pull 7 to 8 hours of SOT a time.
Not ridiculous at all... if you send roughly 500 texts a day, watch a lot of youtube, play a lot of music and browse the web a lot.
Also, rooting = Taking control of your device.
If you want the best, don't be lazy, take it into your own hands.

And ruin the non-replaceable battery? No thanks. Plus I don't want to be tethered to a wall, that's dumb. It's 2015, not 2000
The entire process of unlocking, throwing recovery+flashing super su takes less than 10 minutes. Did the entire thing on the can.
+ Greenify is the best battery saver ever. I'll never not root because of that.
Having said that. the DOZE feature in Android M is pretty slick. My Nexus 6 went from 2h SOT to 4.5 SOT on the last developer preview So hey, maybe that'll make everyone happier

Why is my idle battery drain so bad if all my wakelocks look fine? (Pie stable)

Getting fine screen on time, but bad standby time. I left my phone idle for more than 10 hours, and everything looks fine...but I'm draining more than 2% per hour doing nothing! When I use the phone normally, idle drain is closer to 3%, with still not specific problem that can be seen. On Oreo stable, it was around 1.5%, which is still bad compared to my iPhone, but not unbearable. I had no SIM installed because it was in my iPhone, but with or without makes no noticeable difference.
Advanced optimization, sleep standby optimization AND adaptive battery also make no noticeable difference in ANY combination on and off.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Edit: You might also notice the VPN icon, it's not a normal VPN (with active, keep-alive connection), but a proxy for those of us living in China. Again, I've tested on or off, no difference, and you can't see it in wakelocks or processes.

I don't understand. This is 11 hours of stats idle, on my table at home, with no one touching it. This is no different from ide overnight on my bedside table except total time. I have gathered overnight stats many times with exactly the same results as what's shown here trying to figure out what's wrong.
Could also be a bad WIFI, seen this before for some 5ghz networks.
Is bbs being optimized in battery settings?
try 2.4ghz wifi if you can (where you have good connection, OR just turn wifi off, so we can rule that out the equation.)
make sure better battery stats is NOT being optimized
and try one more time.

Thanks for those suggestions. I hadn't tried switching to 2.4ghz or un-optimizing better battery stats. Unfortunately, there is no noticeable difference yet again. Turning Wifi off totally used to help a bit in Oreo, but hasn't made any difference at all in Pie.
Having the same issue too. Idle drain is fairly high on pie. Wakelocks are pretty clean too. I'm convinced it's something Google related or it's just the system isn't all that optimized as they want us to believe

Thanks for the reply. That makes me feel a little better. Most people on the internet complaining about Pie drain of course has no idea how to actually check anything beyond Android stock battery stats, so there's no way to corroborate.
I noticed that beta 4 has " * Optimized standby power consumption " listed as a system fix. But I don't want to clean flash in and then clean flash out of beta yet again because all of them have had such horrible touch latency that dozens of users are complaining about. But I'm almost tempted to try it.
Can anyone on beta 4 chime in?

Thanks for the feedback! But 0.3% / hour? I'm skeptical. I'm not sure that any Android phone has ever been that low draining, ever. Certainly not in my years of experience. I don't think that's possible even with no apps installed. You can't post any wakelock details because you're not rooted... Maybe post a screenshot of your battery usage graph, please?

Thanks. I feel like I'm being really lucky with this device tho.
I will get my root on today, clean flash again and I will just set it up and see where it lands. But I thought no what saves my battery the most is really good reception. The antenna is around 100meters (300 feet) from my house, WiFi is on point aswell (best on 2.4ghz)
So, like I said the bootloader got unlocked, root is on again so everything is fresh.
The smart battery didn't even have time to read apps that's draining battery this is standby usage with stock settings from OnePlus, without any optimizations. Im counting on adaptive battery that it will do its thing after a day or two.
I have around 20 apps installed but the ones that matter for battery is Telegram, instagram, steam.
