Hi there, my friend has a Nexus 5 (like me) , and he wanted root so bad , and I tought him to root through Towelroot , however , he didn't unlock his bootloader, he got rooted and he got Xposed module on and running , but now he wants to have S2W which is achievable through flashing a kernel, but he doesn't have a recovery and he's bootloader locked , how can he achieve that SAFELY ?
1) flash a recovery using an app called flashify
Or
2) unlock the bootloader using an app called bootunlocker

as long as he already has root, he can flash a new recovery without unlocking the bootloader. first, grab the recovery you want to flash and put it in the storage of your phone(in a .img form). next, grab the flashify app from the play store. now open the flashify app, chose to flash a recovery, find your recovery in your storage, now chose your recovery and flash it. thats all. now boot into recovery to make sure it flashed.

didnt know that, ive always grabbed them from their official sites. not like it makes a difference, im still on an older twrp, like version 2.6.3.4 :angel:

if this procedure is being done on a stock rom (OTA updated), don't forget about /system/recovery-from-boot.p and /system/install-recovery.sh. Either rename or delete them.

Hello. I am new to the HTC one x coming previously from an HTC inspire. I am with att. I followed the directions and unlocked the bootloader. I have been reading and noticed S-Off is still being worked on. I'm Confused on what my next step is to load a custom ROM. Sorry I know this has probably been answered but I'm still confused. Can I do the next set of steps without a computer and just do it from my phone? I downloaded an app called recovery manager not sure of that will help me out. Thanks for any help you guys can provide. I'm on 2.20 and 4.0.4 thanks again.

I think at that time after unlock of the bootloader you will need to install a recovery software the one we use is TWRP i would stick with 2.2.0.0 and install it thought goomanager that is avaliable though the play store.

To use goomanager I need to be rooted though right?I don't think I'm rooted. Farthest I have gotten so far is unlocking the bootloader. And I'm not sure what to do after that. I'm not sure if I can do the rest from my phone (which I hope I can). Thanks ks for your help.

Do you absolutely have to flash SuperSU to flash ROMs? Can you just go right from TWRP and flash a rooted ROM and be considered as "rooted"?

You can just flash a custom ROM, which will have SuperSU or SU cooked in. Only need to flash SuperSU if you want to stay on stock ROM and have root.
you made your situation sound different. the steps i take is use my token, flash recovery, then flash a rom or supersu depending if i want a custom rom or keep using stock.
i am currently on 4.4.2 with root and xposed framework already uninstalled from within the app, philz recovery mode.
when i try to install the 4.4.3 update (about 92 MB) it gives me an error on a specific apk (cannot remember exactly which one).
what are my best options? flash a stock 4.4.3 image and re root?

i am thinking and maybe the best for me is to make a fresh install (never did this before).
i have a couple of apps that i will need to have root and i also like keep the philz custom recovery
i never did this so i would like to know if it is safe to follow this guide:

The link I gave you is the same as a clean install except you won't lose your data or custom recovery. You will lose root and will have to flash super su in your custom recovery. If you go with a complete clean install I'd use the link you posted. You'll have to flash a custom recovery via fastboot and then flash super su in it to root. My link will be simpler for you

I recently upgraded to 4.4.3 myself. Everything you need is in the stickies my friend. Flash the stock 4.4.2 factory ROM through philz recovery. When you upgrade to 4.4.3 you will lose your custom recovery but the boot loader should still be unlocked (mine was). Its okay, there are two options to get philz recovery back. You can use fast boot commands with the phone in the boot loader menu connected to your PC. The command itself and how to set up android SDK is in the sticky called unlocking boot loader, rooting and flashing ROM (or something like that lol). Option two is to use the app flashify available from the playstore. It will back up your custom recovery and you can use that to reflash it after you upgrade. I have not used it myself as I prefer to just use the simple fastboot commands in the cmd menu.

Follow this tutorial on how to get your recovery back. Also the phone will no longer be rooted. There is a link in that tut to the superuser zip. Flash it through the custom recovery after you install it. You'll be rooted on 4.4.3 in less than 15 minutes from start to finish

So guys, what way should I use to root in your opinions, there are a couple that I know of, cm auto root, using adb, and recently TowelRoot (not sure if it works with 4.4.3)....but please share your opinions, and I probably need recovery too so share about that as well...

You cannot root with adb. fastboot is the best way to root It gives you the necessary tools and understanding required to not only root, but also fix your phone if you fubar.
Look for stickies in General
if you have drivers installed properly then extract this

open terminal there (shift+right mouse button>>>select open command prompt here)
reboot the nexus into fastboot mode, connect and type this

reboot into recovery
and flash supersu from chainfire

Wow this is pretty different than what im used to (never oned a nexus), first of dosnt custom Roms come prerooted? and seconsdly twrp or cm...I always used to flash cm before there was twrp, but what is better for nexus?

Yes if you're imeediately going to flash a ROM, no need to root your current rom. Just unlock the bootloader, flash recovery then from recovery flash a rom
Official CWM itself is pretty antiquated. The choice is between Philz advanced CWM (See signature) or TWRP and it is users preference really.

No, I will start with just rooting since xposed modules are great, then move to Roms

Btw I agree to some of what you said in other posts about rooting with adn without PC. Its great to be able to root easily but this in my opinion would make everyone root and stuff while I think rooting and Roms should be for android enthusiasts and what else.
Alright decided to go with cf auto root, pretty simple to go with and no need to flash recovery..
It is very easy but sometime try doing it manually it will be handy to learn the basic fastboot commands in case you softbrick your device which if your a flashaholic like me it will happen I've owned this phone three months I've softbrocked it 5 times

I know what you mean....having my S1 bricked it at least 4 times, but anyways isnt it for the nexus 5 that if u softbrick it all u have to do is flash stock from google?

Yes but sometimes when you brick it it won't turn on it is a very picky/stubborn device

wow i wouldnt think so but im sure not as picky as the S4....is there a tutorial for what to do when this happens?
Just plug it in to the charger and hold both volume buttons and it should go into bootloader mode

although thus devices is uber easy to root you can use towelroot to root it even easier as well and then put a custom recovery on via flashify app

It is possible via android sdk. You can use command: fastboot boot twrp.img
where twrp.img is the name of the recovery that you downloaded and not twrp.img

Yes i know but i would like to do it from the phone... There are tons of flash recovery apps but no boot recovery apps
ROM manager used to do it years ago until people got into trouble with it and it was removed.
If you intend on flashing things AMD backing up, flash a recovery. If you're not willing to flash a recovery, don't modify your phone

The problem with flashing is that you loose the ota update ability. That's why i would like to keep the stock recovery and just boot into cwm when i need it... But i guess i can restore the stock recovery via flashify before the ota is being installed so thats a solution... I just dont like flashing this stuff via apps

1) you do not lose OTA update ability with custom recovery. Read "OTA help-desk" available via my signature
2] what's the big deal about OTA? Its the worst way of updating available to everyone. Why bother? If you rely on OTA, remain unrooted, unmodified. Rooting is not for you.

Ugh lol OK, so worried about the ota? No worries, flash whatever recovery you want twrp,cwm,philz whatever floats your boat. Then when your ota comes out use Rashr to reflash stock recovery so you can update(you have to be on stock obviously).
I've done this numerous times, works every time.

One of the problems with OTA is the slow delivery and partial nature.
If I wasn't rooted, i'd always update using factory images. But since I am, the best way is for flash a pre-rooted stock ROM via recovery. They're usually available within an hour of the factory image becoming available

Agreed 100%, I normally stay rooted,this most recent preview though I'm staying stock. After running L for the last couple months its hard to go back to KitKat(I've tried several times). I have no intention of flashing another rom atm, I'll worry about root after the 3rd.
As for buddy worrying about the ota, really you have two choices.
#1 root and flash a recovery then wait for someone to post a root stock ROM
#2 wait for the ota
The only real benefit I see in waiting for the ota is you will probably get to keep all your apps on your phone. Me personally? I'd just fastboot the preview and wait till the 3rd.

Does anyone else find that rebooting to recovery using twrp doesn't happen? I've tried re flashing recovery with fastboot and even selecting in bootloader boot to recovery after and still just boots into android.. Any ideas? Is it chainfires boot.img causing the problem?

Try unplugging phone from power source then attempt to enter TWRP.
I have done. I've just downloaded selinux changer app. Set permissive and then re flashed twrp again and now I can access it.

How you install custom kernel without TWRP?
My device is stock and i want to install elementalx + supersu to root. But i need TWRP first.

Got the same problem - I flash the TWRP image with fastboot successfully but when I try to enter recovery, it either reboots or shows me the stock recovery. I'm on stog Android 6, trying to flash a different rom and kernel...
we are on the same boat @granets . when i boot to custom recovery it just boots directly to homescreen.
Have you tried the other kernel i linked above?

Left the boat earlier by downloading TWRP again (for a third time!!!) and it worked fine. Guess when downloading from their site, there is a high percent chance you will get a corrupted file. So far around 50% of all images I download don't work, and every time the problem is different. Maybe try that

good to know that! what i did is i used Wug's tool and booted the phone to twrp and then i locate the permanent twrp flashable zip on the "Ready to Flash" folder and "Root files" and then boom! got a working TWRP now :good:
