[Q] Electronics Warranty Firm for Europe? (Like SquareTrade for US) - General Questions and Answers

Hello,
I stumbled upon SquareTrade and found it nice, however when I asked them if their services are available in Europe, they said nope. So I would like to ask you if you know of any similar firms that work in Europe? Particularly for a tablet and btw I live in Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Thanks!

[Q] Billing countries

Anybody know if it's possible to add billing countries that aren't listed on the phone?
I recently purchased a pre from the UK, but I live in Australia. The pre was officially available in Australia, so I didn't think I would have any problems with it, but I can't purchase apps because Australia isn't listed as a billing coutry!
The countries in my list are: Austria, Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, UK, Ireland, Luxembourg, and Netherlands.
Alternatively, are there any unofficial app stores for WebOS?
Or would flashing an Australian ROM work?

It is not possible to add billing countries.
No webOS phone has ever been officially available in Australia. In fact, no webOS phone has ever been officially available in the Southern Hemisphere.
You have a device with UK app catalog access set in the device record on Palm's servers, and that can never be changed.
Preware is the alternative app catalog for webOS.
There is no such thing as an Australian ROM (there is no such thing as a ROM for webOS devices, it's flash memory not Read-Only Memory), and even if there was such a thing it wouldn't help you since the setting for which app catalog you are able to access is stored in the device record on Palm's servers.
The only way to purchase apps on a webOS phone in Australia is to have it first activated in another country (as you have done) and then use a credit card from a country in that area. For example, I live in Australia, buy webOS devices from the UK, ship them to the US for first activation, then ship them to Australia, and use a US debit card from www.simon.com to buy apps.
Yes, it is that hard, and yes that is the only way to do it.

Thanks for the info rwhitby.
You're right, I was mistaken about the pre being available in Australia. It's advertised on http://www.palm.com/au/ but can't actually be purchased.
One more question, why don't I have the US in my billing country list? I would much rather pay in USD than EUR or GBP, it's almost 25% cheaper (with current currency rates).

Your device record on the Palm servers is set to the UK App Catalog.
That device (or more precisely, that comms board in that device) can never purchase from the US App Catalog.
The set of billing countries cannot be changed once the device has been activated once.

Thanks again Rod.

Rod, first, great to see you and WebOS on XDA, which I've been part of for years. Question - do you know of anybody successfully claiming a new Pre2 through warranty (since HP never said that if you activate in the wrong country or wrong operator, you're f'ed where apps are concerned) in order to re-activate it with another SIM? I bought my Pre2 from the HP UK site via mail order to Sweden as soon as it appeared a couple of months ago, but of course, I never figured out that I should have activated it using a UK SIM card... I know you're getting these questions a lot so maybe you've heard of some success stories in that respect? It would perhaps also be a signal to HP if people started claiming returns based on the (un)availability of apps when not in an official country...
In my case, HP's UK store "knew" I was ordering TO Sweden, and still, no disclaimers or anything like that. It could be either a warranty case, or a consumer rights case.

Yes, we have heard of people having success with such claims.

Well, I am really sad to report that I failed (at least via mail) to get Palm UK to replace my phone on the grounds that I can't buy apps without activating it as above. Here's the response from Palm:
Unfortunately, in order to be able to purchase applications from the App Catalog, the phone would have had to be activated in a country in which the Web OS platform had been officially released (Spain, Ireland, France, UK, and Germany). On the other hand, we are not able to offer you a replacement Pre 2 for you to activate it in UK, to enable the payable applications to appear on the App Catalog.
Currently, there are no plans to include Sweden as a supported country for the applications availability.
Please remember that the e-mail support has been discontinued; we suggest that you call our technical support department to: 08 519 92029 (Sweden), or contact us via chat on: www.palm.com/chat
We apologize for these inconveniences.

The really sad thing is the statement that they "don't plan to include Sweden". They didn't say "right now", just that they don't. I am assuming that this goes for other countries not on the list as well... I wonder if anybody has any other information to contradict?
I just ordered my Pre2 from their UK site and they sent me an email telling me that in my country I wouldn't have access to the App Store. They asked me if I'd like to cancel my order. That was nice of them (I didn't cancel because I already knew it).
However, it really sucks that they don't plan to change something with this App store thing. It's like they don't want money from their customers.

[Q] Misleading warranty in Europe ??

Greetings all.
I was waiting for a long time for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 to come to Europe.
So when I saw that a UK vendor at ebay, with huge (700k) positive feedback listed it, I ordered it the same day.
Unfortunately when I got it I realised that there was an internal (on the inner side of the screen glass) scratch, apparently caused during assembly.
The vendor's listing states clearly that there is "1 year warranty".
But when I took the device to the authorised Samsung service provider here in Greece, after checking the serial number they found out that the specific device was produced for the Hong Kong market only, so it was not covered by warranty in Europe!
The vendor refused to take any action and only after bringing the issue to eBay Resolution Center they seem to change their mind and accept to replace it (I'm still waiting for the final arrangement).
Has anyone encountered a similar issue?
Is Samsung's warranty divided into world regions?
In any case, have the above in mind before buying...
Yes, many manufacturers have region specific warranties, and it makes perfect sense, as a company you do not want to be supporting your product in countries where it isn't for sale, as the costs involved in repairing/replacing it would be far greater.
It is the risk you have with buying from Ebay.
Have to admit that is one area apple excels in. If you have a problem with a product you can go to any apple store around the world and use your warranty

Although if you live in a country with no apple stores you're just as buggered, so it's exactly the same.

This is quite understandable.
What is not, is the misleading "1 year warranty" in the listing.
They should sate "1 year warranty in Hong Kong" or something similar.
Do people who live in Europe have the right to send a device to Hong Kong for repair under warranty?
Has anyone done this?
Rooted HTC vis-a-vis Warranty
As far as I can comment:
I went with my HTC One X that is rooted (by the way) to outlets in 3 countries, 3 instances, for repair. In Holland, the UAE and in Spain. My device was purchased through amazon.es. (Captain hindsight saves the day: I should've returnt the device and ask for a brand new one, I obviously had a blue monday copy)
The HTC warranty appears to be global. However, this one also appears to be void when you install a custom bootloader or do other stuff to your phone. Funny enough in both NL and UAE the service agents couldn't care less about the software, they just wiped the phone clean, repaired my defective hardware and kaching! Everyone happy.
The treatment in Spain was particularly rough, where the super-square Arvate EspaƱa refused to repair under warranty. They claim the HTC warranty was voided, however in Europe a minimum of 2 year warranty on a phone exists that is not faulted by rooting or whatever other software manipulation. Threathening publication of their emails on twitter, copying emails to various Consumer Organisations (national and European) made them realise they better comply with the law and they are now fixing my issue. (p.s.: Amazon, when reviewing the case, immediately offered me a full money-back, as they could not provide a new HTC One X, 8 months after purchase; KUDOSSSS)
So from my experience, there are 2 levels of warranty with HTC:
1. HTC Special warranty, which seems to work seemlesly globally (KUDOS!!)
2. Your national statutory warranty
Here's more details on claiming the warranty on the rooted device: (would cross-post to XDA, but don't know where to put it)

[Q] Buying new phone.

Does anybody know where to buy this nice phone in Europe?
Best in UK or Germany or Poland.
Of course it can be any international www site that can send it to any of that countries above.
What about warranty then.
Does Samsung have international warranty or it depends from something else?
I am looking on ebay.com but no new phones and with shipping to UK.
Regards
Mac
read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2227031
and you're on your own for warranty. samsung will refuse to repair it outside of US

Questions about Samsung Warranty, maybe Int/Global. Anyone with experience?

Planning to buy a International / Unlocked phone online (Amazon, Ebay, or some electronic / computer retailer) due to cheaper prices or better specs. Am I still backed by Samsung Canada or Samsung Global/International if phone is having issues/broken within 1st year. Yes or No for either/both ? I've read Samsung International can deal with it if I'm registered or something like that. Can anyone share their experiences?
If I buy phone from other Samsung Stores in other countries (US, UK or somewhere else) and have them shipped to me. Am I only covered for that country and nowhere else? (Example: I buy from Samsung UK, only their UK store covers my warranty. If there is any issues, I have to send the phone back to UK?)
Whats the best way get to their unlocked/International phones that actually has warranty? Apparently the specs for unlocked phones from Samsung Canada are not to my taste; looking at dual-sim which they don't have.
Thanks a million for all help.

Buying from China...Blacklisted

Hi guys !
I bought a Smartphone from an Online Shop in China...the price were awesome and I jump on the opportunity
However, for safety purposes (it is the first time that I payed so much from chines online shop), I payed for an transport insurance that will payback if the phone get lost in the "journey" from China to Europe.
By tracking system info, I know that the phone get to Spain, than Portugal (no customs system )...but it's been a while since the phone is stuck in Lisbon and, next week, the deadline for the reception of the good will come to an end....
Now, my question is:
If I activate the insurance from China, since the deadline is overdue and Lisbon won't answer my requests for more informations, and that, by some miracle, the phone finally get to my address (it happened for some goods in the past), will the phone works?
I don't know if the seller will blacklist the phone in China or in worldwide carriers....in fact, I don't even know if I will get a payback
Thanks for the help !!

Why would a seller blacklist a phone they are knowingly selling? Was it listed for sale as a black listed item?

If the phone doesn't reach the client...it could mean 2 things, or it's lost or it was robbed by someone in the chain of transport...at least that's how I think.
