Gmail notifications - General Questions and Answers

I have an issue where I receive no notifications for gmail. I have searched for answers already and most issues seem to be from sync or notification settings in the app. I have checked both of these and still get no notifications. It has been present on my account across a couple of phones, gmail app versions, etc. Anyone have an idea what to look at next?

1. clear your cache of Gmail.
2. If you on Android 4.0.x/ 3.x/2.x remove updates and update from the play store.
2. If you on Android 4.1.x or newer check if Show Notifications is enabled. (disabled? Just enable it. enabled? Re-enable it.)
3. Check auto-sync settings to be sure it's enabled and app settings.
4. Reboot your phone.

Have already done all of that, but did it again and still nothing.
This issue has also persisted across multiple phones.

I found this on internet, maybe it helps?
To configure notifications for sub-folders:
Select an Inbox folder (e.g. Social) from the slide-out window.
From the overflow menu (i.e. the three dots in the upper-right corner) select Label Settings
Toggle on "Label notifications" and configure to your heart's content.
Rinse, repeat with all the other folders.
To not have to put up with this nonsense:
Go to your Gmail Inbox via the web.
Click the gear icon in the upper-right and select "Configure Inbox."
Uncheck all the sub-folders and click Save.
PROFIT!!! Also, get all your mail notified like before since the Inbox will revert to the old style.

I found that before and have played around with my label settings and I still have not been able to get it to work

Also I have 2 gmail accounts, one personal and one work. I can receive notifications from my work email but not my personal.

I may be wrong but it is likely that you can only get notification from the email account you signed in your phone during the setup of your accounts. If you have a multi-user acount set up it is likely only the principal account will get notifications. Best luck.

The account I'm receiving notifications for is not the original account I setup with

Sorry I don't have any suggestions that you haven't already tried.
However, you could get an app to read new emails directly from your gmail and give notifications. I use enotify, only because it has a notification reminder setting, but it does receive direct push from your mail account just like the gmail app is supposed to be doing.
If that app doesn't work either, I would say something is likely wrong with your gmail account beyond your fixing, and you may want to look for a gmail support page to contact them about the issue.

For those getting a VZWNMN text from 6250

Go to your my Verizon account, remove all email addresses from your vz backup feature in "manage email settings", hit apply. You will then get a text saying VZWUEP: DELETE. This confirms the texts should stop.

Thanks, I have getting texts so frequently from VZW.
Since this was the first hit on google for this problem, I'll post here..
I had to go to vzw.com/sync to find the sync settings. I deleted my email addresses from the page that popped up and it seems to have stopped the 6250 text messages.

I am not getting those texts but I am getting some BS spam from a place called XAPUSH .. every so often I get a notification in my top status bar with some lame "buy me" or "this is cool get it" message from them and their advertisers. Thanks, Verizon, for that unwanted bloat on my phone.
There is an "opt out" method but so far it hasnt worked.. you can either install an app from the Market and select opt out and then delete the app.. (I wonder why I have to install an app for this?) or you can go to their web site and enter some phone information and thats supposed to work. Neither one has, yet, for me. Is anyone else getting these?

This worked for me. It was a little different path for me to get to the settings page. From the main page when I logged into my account I had to do the following:
Under My Verizon menu, select Back Up My Contacts
A slightly transparent window popped up with all my Back-Up Assistant stuff. Part way down the page on the right side of the window there was a link to click on Email Accounts or Account Settings (I forget exactly now, but you'll know which when you see it). Another menu pops up with a little box listing your email accounts that are used for BA+, and next to each there should be an option to Remove and one to Edit/Modify. If you only have one email address here, then when you mouse over either options the cursor will actually turn into a 'do not enter' logo or something like that which might make you believe you cannot click there. However, you can indeed click it. When you click 'remove' another warning box pops up asking you to make sure, so confirm. Once you do this, your BA+ account is entirely reset and all your contacts disappear, so make sure you don't need any of that stuff before you do this. If it worked, then you'll get that VXWUEP: DELETE text almost immediately (mine took only a couple of seconds). When you get that, you can say goodby to all those annoying VZWNMN text messages!

The Boot's instructions worked for my father's Droid Razr. He didn't get these messages with his last Razr but got them with this replacement. I think it had to do with removing the Back-up Assistant apps after I rooted it. I didn't remove or disable them on the last phone.
I just blocked (blacklisted)6250 from text settings.

[Q] How to move contacts from Phone to Google

I know this migh sound as a silly question, or an easy one, but believe me, I've spend a lot of time trying to figure this out:
I have several contacts in my phone (When I save a contact that someone sends me from WhatsApp, it saves it automatically in the phone) that I need to move to my google account. In theory there was an option "Merge with google" that is supposed to do this, however I don't see this option and I can't really find a way to move my contacts, other than probably export to USB and then import them directly into gmail via web (too complicated and I'm afraid I might loose info), from my phone to my google account.
Any ideas?

If its less than say 15 contacts, I would manually add them into gmail. When in Contacts, do you have an export setting? Or how about for those specific contacts, can you click Edit and switch them to your Gmail account at the top?
There's only the global import/export from and to SD card and USB. Can't change storage in the contact from phone to google

Pretty sure you can export sdcard then transfer it to your computer and follow the Google Support doc. My only question is if this creates duplicate contacts since I've never done it before.
It will. Add I mentioned, there's a "merge to google" option in most androids, but for some freaking reason it ain't there I'm Verizon S3

Plug your phone into the usb drive and go to gmail. Log in and in the top left, it should say Gmail (right above the inbox). Click there and change to Contacts. There should be an option that says Import. Then choose to import from phone.

There is a way to do it, but it's very tedious. It's the only way I found to do it.
Copy each number individually and make a new contact, when you save it it'll ask for it to be connected to Google or the phone, just make sure you pick Google everytime.
Make it your end of summer project.
Edit: I'd also like to add that an ice cold beer or favorite cocktail helps immensely in this process.

Try this. Hit the menu button when looking at all of your contacts. There may be an option that says "merge with google".
Not sure if this works for me for a couple of reasons.
1) I imported my contacts through Google
2) I'm running hyperdrive and maybe that's an option that was added.

what i like to do is export contact to sd card or usb storage, then go to google contact (https://www.google.com/contacts/) and then import the vcf file that you just made.
after that just sync it.

The thing with this solution is that it involves exporting tem into a flat file, going to google, uploading and hope everthing went ok. I have done this before and I have seen a lot of issues with this process. Anyhow, I guess I'll just end up doing it this way, even though I hate it.

S3's in the dialer under contacts when they are all listed if you click menu it rings up a list of choices 'merge with google' has to be one of the options. Like this

Notice right in the middle.
If your device does not have this option it may be because of rom. Try flashing a stock TW rom doing this process then return to a nandroid of your current set up.

Shareboard
Multiple social network posting
Tired of opening different apps to speak your mind across the multitude of social networks you use? For such situations, a handy and compact app to share contents to multiple social networks from under one screen.
You can post status updates to Twitter, Facebook and Google+ (not fully supported : see 3rd post) simultaneously, optionally along with or without a picture. You can toggle which networks you want to post from within a simple minimalist UI.
No useless running in background.
[*]No "Google analytics mumbo jumbo" data collection.
[*]No privacy infringing usage statistics collection.
[*]No online caching/buffering of posts.
Currently Twitter and Facebook is supported and application is under active development.
Indirect Google + is added since v1.5.0 (hacky workaround against API restrictions from google)
Permissions and Privacy
The app only uses Network access permissions to connect and post to requested social networks.
External storage read permission has been added so that selecting pictures from memory card doesn't crash the app.
There is no advertisement in app.
Nothing is posted to user profiles without the user content (Basically the only function of the app is to post only when user wants it to), so you can be assured of your privacy.
Unlike other apps, there's no middle server that'd reroute your posts to multiple networks. All updates are direct from your mobile to official API.

Video review from XDA TV
http://youtu.be/3y9-xSy6BQc
Changelog
v1.5.0
• Added Google Plus sharing
v1.4.7
• Compiled with latest sdk and support library. Gingerbread users should get the full Holo ui now.
• Improved Twitter login process.
v1.4.6
• New login , web based, to solve fb login problems.
• Fixed the share intent.
v1.4.0
• Enabled the share intent. Now you can share pics/text from android share via menu.
• Fixed crash on some devices while selecting picture.
• Fixed Twitter log in bugs.
• Enabled SSL(https) enforcing to comply with Twitter API changes.
Google Plus support is added as an experimental feature since version 1.5.0.
Due to restrictions from Google, the Google + API is read only and could not be used to post content to individual timelines.
There is an API available, but that is only for posting to G+ pages (and not profiles) and it could be used only by substantially big companies (like Buffer) under permission from google.
Therefore, the sharing mechanism in Shareboard is implemented to pull up the Google+ app's sharing dialog with the contents already filled in, so you have to click the share button on g+ once more to get the job done.
Also the G+ sharing dialog will pop up as a separate task, so that you can keep it minimized and come back to shareboard while it's uploading/posting.
This is as streamlined I could make the process. After this method, I've been feeling easy to share more frequently. I hope this would similarly make G+ posting a little more easy for lot of people like me.
Please feel free to give feedback and more constructive ideas and suggestions if any.

It shouldn't be having any dependency on official fb apps. I'll look into the matter and update soon.
Update : first time you post, it'd ask for permission instead of sharing the post. Once you grant permission, press the SEND button again.

You may try one thing, completely remove fb and messngr official apps and try this login.
I'm unable to reproduce the problem. Probably something related to user's fb account
I've tried this on my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7, both have the exact same result.
I'm able to log into Twitter just fine, I can post messages to Twitter just fine as well.
When I attempt to login to Facebook I get a popup telling me that "ShareBoard would like to access your public profile and friend list", I click OK....nothing happens. I do not get the login script I would expect to see. I try to post a message and choose Facebook and I get a toast telling me that I need to login to Facebook first.
I do not have the fb messenger app installed, nor am I going to install it.

thanks i tried this and it worked, logged into fbook, authorised the app and posted.
On a side note - when posting I set privacy to "only me". I saw the post no problems. But there is no way to change privacy for future posts afterwards without logging out and log back in to fbook within shareboard. Or just update it on the website.
Anyway I reinstall fbook app and it still posted ok. When I logged out of fbook on shareboard and tried to log in again it wouldn't work (this is with the fbook app reinstalled).
On a different matter I got a fail from Twitter this time. See attached screen.
Anything else I can try to help?
Edit : actually I can't change privacy at all even with logging in/out of fbook. Think I will have to remove authorisation manually on the fbook website and then re-add it thru shareboard.

You know what's odd is I set a couple of appointments while playing around with the phone (I still haven't cracked open the operating instructions). I was only able to set something for the same day no matter what I tried. Funny thing is after seeing this post I can't even find how I ever did that!! Strange!!

Did you try reminder? With that you can create an event for current day. Apparently samsung forgot to add a date chooser for it
Only way to set an event for a specific date is using s-voice. But i would say don't bother it won't understand anyway

You're right, it was with S-Voice and it couldn't understand me! If only we could use GNow!
SVoice works pretty well for me setting reminders, I'd say about 90% of the time it works as expected, but once in a while it doesn't work for some reason. Haven't found a pattern to those failures.
What isn't possible (and this is really annoying) is I can't add events to my calendar from the watch.
I use "My tasks in Gear" by Dimitrios Tzimos. It's a paid app but at just over £1 it's a bargain!
The app lets you setup reminders/tasks on your Gear S3 and syncs them to a free android phone app (and I have that syncing with my Google calendar so they appear in my preferred android phone calendar app - Business Calendar).
I've been using it for a few weeks now & it works well. The developer is also very responsive to suggestions and has already added a few features I suggested
There's a video of it here but it's a few months old now and you can't get the app for free anymore like Mr Analytical states.
Any questions, please feel free t ask!

Thanks for sharing this, looks like it could be very useful.
Couple questions:
1. Does the process you follow create actual calendar events in w/Google Calendar, or just create tasks in Google Calendar? Hoping this works to create calendar events?
2. Can you use voice input to create tasks on the watch? From what I've seen, third party apps may not have access to the voice input option on the watch.

So far as I can tell it only allows you to create tasks.
Yes, you can use S-Voice, but it's not intuitive! You must select a field first then you'll get prompted to input using keyboard. Then you rotate dial all the way to last selection to use crappy S-Voice. Screenshots from watch.

2 questions - 1st, how do you get notifications for calendar events. I've set calendars, schedule etc in Notifications\Manage Apps but no notifications appear on the watch. Works fine for Messages, Gmail, WhatsApp etc.
Q2 How do you get those screenshots - home button and right swipe doesn't work for me !
---------- Post added at 05:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:30 PM ----------
Ok sorted the screenshot. Home and quickly swipe left to tight.
Supposedly the latest firmware update from March allows S-voice to create date/time-specific reminders now. Have not tried it yet.
It does but that's the only way you can do it. You can't write or type a reminder with a specific date - it defaults to the current day/date with no option for a different date.

You can't get notifications for calendar events. That's really sad! You can only get notifications for 'tasks'.

Can you tell us how you got it to do that?
Also what calendar app?
Hi. I was also researching this, and came across this app. I wasn't immediately seeing how tasks made it out of this app into Google, but it sounds like you can sync it; not worried about that.
However, I also use Business Calendar.

Business Calendar does not have the ability to read Google Reminders, only Google events. So, I would think this app would sync into Google as an Event if you're seeing it in Business Calendar, no?

I am assuming Tasks == Google Reminders, which Business Calendar doesn't have the ability to show.
What am I missing?
Thank you...

Now we have Tizen 3.0.1 and the changelog says there is an option to add calendar events. but i can´t do anything.
Must there be a pairing with an samsung device or what?
Also i see on many videos on youtube an email app on the gear s3, where does it come from?
Any news aor tips?

Create contacts under 'Phone' as opposed to a Gmail account?

All phones I have used thus far offer the option to create and save contacts on the "Phone", but the Pixel's contact app makes it mandatory to link contacts to the existing Gmail account - which I am not keen on doing.
Any workaround that folks here know of?
Suggestions appreciated. Many thanks.
It's possible that a third party Contacts/Dialer app in the Play store might offer the option, but I have no experience with trying to not use Google to store my contacts and I haven't fooled with a third-party Contacts/Dialer app in years. I do agree that just as you say, I've seen the option on some phones to save contacts to the phone itself instead. Off topic but my first experience noticing this was helping someone with their HTC Evo 4G and I saw that there were at least 4-5 different places you could save a contact - way overkill in that case.
Agree, that's indeed an overkill.
Yeah, searching for reliable contacts app too. Darn it, Google. Got this baby earlier today; traded in my XZ (which, sigh, gladly offered phone storage for contacts).
Good luck! Please let us know how your search goes.

So... There's "drupe". Highly, highly promising. It allows me to create a contact under "Phone" (even offers SIM).
However, it doesn't bulk import from a vcf file and so that can be a pain (adding a few hundred contacts one-by-one). Found another bug too - encountered when trying to associate more than one number with a contact - and I've written tothe developers. Let's see.
Other contact apps, well, less said the better. And yes... Will keep updating this space.
Hope there's a workaround out there!
Tried a couple more apps.
ZenUI's Dialler and Contacts. Looks and feels all good, but no use. As in, doesn't fit my requirement. Likewise, with ExDialler.
Unsurprisingly, HTC's People app keeps crashing despite installing their Service Pack. Was hoping to get lucky trying it. Sony's apks don't even install for that matter.
Then tried an app called "Import Contacts (old)" which seemed to do the trick, only to realise it chose the Gmail account by default (despite the app description). Didn't want to try the paid version later, might reach out to the Dev to confirm before making a purchase.
BlackBerry's seemed almost perfect (allowed importing from.vcf) but it's a trial!! Need BB Hub subscription after 30 days. ?

Guess I found the near-perfect workaround, @roirraW "edor" ehT.
Install this app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fjsoft.mylocalaccount (it will NOT show up in the app drawer)
Go to Settings\Accounts\Add Account; click "MyLocalAccount". Then, return to the accounts screen (or list) and enter MyLocalAccount. Allow it to SYNC your contacts.
Head to the default Contacts app (in my case, Google Contacts which comes with the Pixel) and IMPORT - or CREATE - your contacts. You will then be presented with the option of choosing MyLocalAccount, an equivalent of storing your contacts in the phone storage. Select, import/create, et voila!
If there's one thing I need to remember, it is to not pull down the Contacts screen. Bl**dy thing force syncs Google contacts and the only way to remove them will be to remove and re-add the Google account. *cringe*
Anyway... Phew. For now.

Awesome for the most part! Thanks for sharing your research and mostly solution. I'll try to remember in case this comes up elsewhere, or if I ever want to do the same thing. Heck, this might be a good start to a Google Sheet (irony) I was thinking of doing for my own reference only, to record links and details of apps that provide workarounds for any problem I come across that's worth noting.
BOOgle!
Glad if this is of help to anyone. I have this OCD-esque mindset when it comes to how things in a gadget should be, micro arrangement, etc. *insert headdesk* and I think I'm not the only one (and naah, this has nothing to do with G having phone numbers, ha ha).
Oohhh, we'll definitely need a reference sheet like that one! Who knows what we'll end up recording.
My next itch: to find codes that bring up the service test menu on the Pixel.

I am a little narrow-minded about how I want my phone to work, too. I don't even care about how it looks/theming although I prefer apps to be dark. I care a lot more about how the software and hardware work.
I actually tend to keep things relatively simple, as much as possible, anymore. About the most invasive thing I do these days besides flashing TWRP/PureNexus/SuperSU and using Nova Launcher Prime and Titanium Backup is that after a fresh ROM flash, I install the last version of Google Voice v4.7.xxxxx because 5.x versions make it no longer appear as an option for voicemail in the Pixel and HTC 10's Phone app.
My "trick" is to install the last Voice v4.7, configure it and select Voice as my Voicemail provider in the phone app, then I can update it via the Play Store and the setting will stick. You can note that if you go into the phone app's voicemail settings after updating to 5.x, now it appears as if nothing is selected. There's only one option, Carrier voicemail, and it's not selected. I've done tests and this workaround works every time reliably.
Hopefully, this trick doesn't stop working and Google reinstates things so that Voice v5.x will be recognized as a Voicemail provider sooner than later.

Oh likewise! I like it when widgets on the screen complement to the front face of the handset, especially when bezels are present. As is the case with the Pixel.
Was not aware of that, I'm afraid. We don't use Google Voice here, although I have noted that trick. Might be flying down later this year and, for all you know, might end up using Google Voice!
Been aeons since I rooted/flashed, though. HTC Desire (A8181) was my first and till-date only rooted/modded device. Didn't see a need to root/flash ROMs on my Android One and Xperia XZ, and not sure if I will need to with the Pixel either. Happy to wait and observe. Not even 96 hours since purchase
But from the little I have observed, guess the software is still a bit buggy (e.g. updating/downloading from the Play Store can suddenly become long drawn). And the touchscreen can act funny (albeit rare). Oh, and just noticed - while on a call, the DND blob shows up on the notification bar, which means I won't get any email or SMS alerts. That's a first. Slowly figuring ways around.

I think there may have been a front page article on the DND issue, which I'm led to believe was by design, although I think it's a stupid idea of Google's. I know I read an article about it somewhere, anyway, within the last few weeks.

Oh, ok, will search it out. Thanks for the tip.
I simply went to Settings\Notifications and allowed Mail, Calendar, Gmail, Hangouts, Messages, Messenger and Phone to override DND.
Hope it works. Haven't had a chance to observe yet.

I've tried this solution and it works. One simple question - why do I need to enable account sync option? It seems that everything works and without this option...
This MyLocalAccount option works well with any phone that does not have its own contact manager.
And does not want to sync contacts with google account.
But i do not see the option in Google Contacts app to select which contacts to display. I see an option, but the MyLocalAccount is not there.
It shows up in other dialers/contact managers, but google contacts seems to be ignoring any non-cloud options.
I can create a new contact or choose default storage as MyLocalAccount no problem. But i cannot force the displayed contacts yet. Any ideas?
Edit: at the home screen, the top right corner, you must press the icon. Then you will see dropdown menu for the different "accounts to display". And select local contacts (MyLocalAccount) or all accts. Duh.
