All phones I have used thus far offer the option to create and save contacts on the "Phone", but the Pixel's contact app makes it mandatory to link contacts to the existing Gmail account - which I am not keen on doing.
Any workaround that folks here know of?
Suggestions appreciated. Many thanks.
It's possible that a third party Contacts/Dialer app in the Play store might offer the option, but I have no experience with trying to not use Google to store my contacts and I haven't fooled with a third-party Contacts/Dialer app in years. I do agree that just as you say, I've seen the option on some phones to save contacts to the phone itself instead. Off topic but my first experience noticing this was helping someone with their HTC Evo 4G and I saw that there were at least 4-5 different places you could save a contact - way overkill in that case.
Agree, that's indeed an overkill.
Yeah, searching for reliable contacts app too. Darn it, Google. Got this baby earlier today; traded in my XZ (which, sigh, gladly offered phone storage for contacts).
Good luck! Please let us know how your search goes.

Thanks!
So... There's "drupe". Highly, highly promising. It allows me to create a contact under "Phone" (even offers SIM).
However, it doesn't bulk import from a vcf file and so that can be a pain (adding a few hundred contacts one-by-one). Found another bug too - encountered when trying to associate more than one number with a contact - and I've written tothe developers. Let's see.
Other contact apps, well, less said the better.And yes... Will keep updating this space.
Hope there's a workaround out there!
Tried a couple more apps.
ZenUI's Dialler and Contacts. Looks and feels all good, but no use. As in, doesn't fit my requirement. Likewise, with ExDialler.
Unsurprisingly, HTC's People app keeps crashing despite installing their Service Pack. Was hoping to get lucky trying it. Sony's apks don't even install for that matter.
Then tried an app called "Import Contacts (old)" which seemed to do the trick, only to realise it chose the Gmail account by default (despite the app description). Didn't want to try the paid version later, might reach out to the Dev to confirm before making a purchase.
BlackBerry's seemed almost perfect (allowed importing from.vcf) but it's a trial!! Need BB Hub subscription after 30 days. ?

Guess I found the near-perfect workaround, @roirraW "edor" ehT.
Install this app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fjsoft.mylocalaccount (it will NOT show up in the app drawer)
Go to Settings\Accounts\Add Account; click "MyLocalAccount". Then, return to the accounts screen (or list) and enter MyLocalAccount. Allow it to SYNC your contacts.
Head to the default Contacts app (in my case, Google Contacts which comes with the Pixel) and IMPORT - or CREATE - your contacts. You will then be presented with the option of choosing MyLocalAccount, an equivalent of storing your contacts in the phone storage. Select, import/create, et voila!
If there's one thing I need to remember, it is to not pull down the Contacts screen. Bl**dy thing force syncs Google contacts and the only way to remove them will be to remove and re-add the Google account. *cringe*
Anyway... Phew. For now.

Awesome for the most part! Thanks for sharing your research and mostly solution. I'll try to remember in case this comes up elsewhere, or if I ever want to do the same thing. Heck, this might be a good start to a Google Sheet (irony) I was thinking of doing for my own reference only, to record links and details of apps that provide workarounds for any problem I come across that's worth noting.
BOOgle!
Glad if this is of help to anyone. I have this OCD-esque mindset when it comes to how things in a gadget should be, micro arrangement, etc. *insert headdesk* and I think I'm not the only one (and naah, this has nothing to do with G having phone numbers, ha ha).
Oohhh, we'll definitely need a reference sheet like that one! Who knows what we'll end up recording.
My next itch: to find codes that bring up the service test menu on the Pixel.

I am a little narrow-minded about how I want my phone to work, too. I don't even care about how it looks/theming although I prefer apps to be dark. I care a lot more about how the software and hardware work.
I actually tend to keep things relatively simple, as much as possible, anymore. About the most invasive thing I do these days besides flashing TWRP/PureNexus/SuperSU and using Nova Launcher Prime and Titanium Backup is that after a fresh ROM flash, I install the last version of Google Voice v4.7.xxxxx because 5.x versions make it no longer appear as an option for voicemail in the Pixel and HTC 10's Phone app.
My "trick" is to install the last Voice v4.7, configure it and select Voice as my Voicemail provider in the phone app, then I can update it via the Play Store and the setting will stick. You can note that if you go into the phone app's voicemail settings after updating to 5.x, now it appears as if nothing is selected. There's only one option, Carrier voicemail, and it's not selected. I've done tests and this workaround works every time reliably.
Hopefully, this trick doesn't stop working and Google reinstates things so that Voice v5.x will be recognized as a Voicemail provider sooner than later.

Oh likewise! I like it when widgets on the screen complement to the front face of the handset, especially when bezels are present. As is the case with the Pixel.
Was not aware of that, I'm afraid. We don't use Google Voice here, although I have noted that trick. Might be flying down later this year and, for all you know, might end up using Google Voice!
Been aeons since I rooted/flashed, though. HTC Desire (A8181) was my first and till-date only rooted/modded device. Didn't see a need to root/flash ROMs on my Android One and Xperia XZ, and not sure if I will need to with the Pixel either. Happy to wait and observe. Not even 96 hours since purchase
But from the little I have observed, guess the software is still a bit buggy (e.g. updating/downloading from the Play Store can suddenly become long drawn). And the touchscreen can act funny (albeit rare). Oh, and just noticed - while on a call, the DND blob shows up on the notification bar, which means I won't get any email or SMS alerts. That's a first. Slowly figuring ways around.

I think there may have been a front page article on the DND issue, which I'm led to believe was by design, although I think it's a stupid idea of Google's. I know I read an article about it somewhere, anyway, within the last few weeks.

Oh, ok, will search it out. Thanks for the tip.
I simply went to Settings\Notifications and allowed Mail, Calendar, Gmail, Hangouts, Messages, Messenger and Phone to override DND.
Hope it works. Haven't had a chance to observe yet.
This My local Account app is simply fantastic and does the job well. Thanks for guidance

I've tried this solution and it works. One simple question - why do I need to enable account sync option? It seems that everything works and without this option...
This MyLocalAccount option works well with any phone that does not have its own contact manager.
And does not want to sync contacts with google account.
But i do not see the option in Google Contacts app to select which contacts to display. I see an option, but the MyLocalAccount is not there.
It shows up in other dialers/contact managers, but google contacts seems to be ignoring any non-cloud options.
I can create a new contact or choose default storage as MyLocalAccount no problem. But i cannot force the displayed contacts yet. Any ideas?
Edit: at the home screen, the top right corner, you must press the icon. Then you will see dropdown menu for the different "accounts to display". And select local contacts (MyLocalAccount) or all accts. Duh.

I've had my Nexus One for quite a few weeks now, and I've made a list of my 'annoyances' from my own experience. These are all to do with Google's own apps, which is a bit disappointing because it is, ultiamtely, their own platform. They are annoyances instead of complaints because none of them hinder me in any significant way, but the length of the list do make me feel that there is no reason for Google to not include these features as soon as possible.
Contacts - Synchronization with Gmail contacts is great, but can't edit Birthdays on an Android phone.
Maps - Can't add an address pinned on the map to an existing contact, can't apply custom labels to starred items, My Maps always gives me "This Community Map could not be displayed because it contains errors."
Calendar - I've got 3 calendars synchronized with Google Calendar, associated with 3 different colours, and while all of them work fine in Day, Week and Agenda views, absolutely no colours show up in Monthly View! This is really annoying.
Browser - Can only recognize US phone numbers, so if I want to call a number on a page which is not in US format, I've to manually copy it and paste it in the Phone app, rather than just a long press or something easier.
Selection of Text - a bit cumbersome given HTC Desire does it better in my opinion.
Account Synchronization - Sometimes doesn't work. I've made changes in a contact and separately in my calendar entry, only to come back and find the change reverted to the original setting. I tried to repeat the change again but it would just revert back again. Finally I had to make the change in my PC browser and force-sync the phone for it to be accepted. Mind you, as I mentioned this has happened only a few times, it works fine most other times.
So as I mentioned, by themselves these issues aren't big. And I do realize in some instances a free 3rd party app is the way to go. But still, surely Google should make sure that their own apps leave as little to be desired as possible.
Thoughts?
A few key apps that aren't even developed yet:-

I've just realized that the reason nothing shows in Monthly views is because events are all-day rather than during a specific time period on the day. If an event was scheduled for, say, between 1700 and 1800 hours, then a colour would show.
Not that this makes it any better. I still should be able to see something in the Monthly view to tell me that an all-day event is up on that day.
I know you're talking update what they have, but I think they're missing some important things..

You're quite right. The absence of an editable mobile app for Google Docs, from Google, is mind-boggling.
Infact I'll include your post in the OP. It'll help build a decent list of "Apps to Do or Improve by Google for Android."
Actually the most disappointing thing is that some of those issues are pretty obvious to anyone having used the phone a few days.
Also some were reported years ago ...
For example Google contact sync ridiculous resolution for photos, maps location labels etc ... And it's not like it would take them more than a couple hours work to fix either.
I dont think google will allocate their resources on specific stock apps or them given priority over the development on Gingerbread since with apps they have community resource.
unlike mobileme or exchange, google offers a lot of the cloud services free of charge for our personal use, and we shouldnt take that for granted.
and to answer the op, I too would like to have the listed features applied, but I would categorize them as 'nice to have'.
-Task list (would be very elegant solution to other 3rd party notepad software)
-gtalk video

I agree, I'm not too inconvenienced by them, but it would make the platform/apps so much neater and more polished. Some of them are really basic though, and you have to wonder that if Google can include some advanced features in an app (for example - layers or the seemingly defunct My Maps in the Maps app) why not quickly complete the basics?
Here's another thing I've been noticing regarding Gmail's Push mechanism. I've subscribed to this thread and another thread for instant notification and I've received a total of 5 replies, so 5 emails. Two of those emails have been delivered instantly to my phone, but the other 3 emails have had delays, the worst one being 11 minutes.
Again, my Gmail account isn't critical, so it doesn't bother me. However it's a feature which I imagine a lot would like perfected.

I absolutely hate how I can't stop it from syncing auto-added contacts, which should be an option to completely disable in Gmail anyway. It's been almost a year since they changed it but Google apparently doesn't bother paying attention to people's complaints.
I did read somewhere that 2.3 is supposed to be heavily focused on improving the stock design and apps. I certainly hope that's true.

Hmm? Layers and My Maps work in Google Maps... I have a layer of Star*ucks and Kroger Fuel stations and when I need to fuel up (me or the car ) I fire up Maps, turn Layers, My Maps, click the one I need.
I wish Google Maps could do orientation of travel... Navigator does, but sometimes a flat map is just fine.
I think they said Gingerbread would have major cosmetic changes so I think they will improve google apps, overhall the Music app (which has been near enough the same since 1.0) and the messaging app etc etc.

Try going to contacts.google.com and set your contacts into separate groups (friends/family/etc) and tell the phone to only sync those groups. Lifehacker had a post about this awhile back with better directions
Google Apps are BY FAR the worst, most incomplete, apps I have installed on my phone.
How about the fact that you can't change your "send as" address in Gmail for Android? They gave us that ability at Gmail dot com years and years ago, but there's been an open ticket on adding it to the Android version for over a year with NO response from Google at all.
I HATE how the contacts app automatically merges similar contacts. My dad and I have the same name, so it adds my Facebook account and all of my email addresses to his contact after every sync.
The Google Voice App gives you the options to "Never call with GV", "Always call with GV", "Use GV for international calls", or "Always ask"... Why can't you set the option on a per-contact basis? I wan't to call half the people in my phone book with GV and half without it, but I have to tell it which is which for every single call. I opened a ticket on this months and months ago with NO response from Google.
The list goes on... I just can't believe how long some of these tickets have been open, and how many "+1" responses they have, but Google just ignores them. It really makes me wish they'd release paid versions of their software so that maybe we'd have a voice (nevermind the fact that I gave Google $575 for my Nexus One).
The other frustrating part is that Google's "novelty apps" seem to be more complete than their "productivity apps". Maybe it's because I don't use them every day or because I don't rely on them, but does anybody have any complaints about the My Tracks app? Or Google Goggles?
Anyway, thanks for letting me vent!

Would you _please_ stop this, it's causing me utter agony
My Samsung Galaxy S is deprived of this functionality by Samsung (!). Groups sync but just don't show... To prove they indeed sync, just create a group in goole with the name "test". Then sync. Group does not appear on phone. Now try to create a group "test" on the phone -> Error "Group name already in use".
Samsung really f... up the contacts management
Customizable snooze times and volume per alarm would be nice.
Is google also responsible for the youtube app? It sucks too ^^
No comments possible for example...
That is def.ly a good topic to debate and I def.ly would say yes they should. It looks like those apps will def.ly be redefined come gingerbread time (3.0). Even the gmail apps is not as defined as it should. At least there should be an unread mail count by default in the app among other things.

I gotta agree with this. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
Gmail: needs the ability to send to a group.
YouTube: needs a setting to tell it what resolution of video to default to. It's a pain to load the video and then select "high quality" every time.
And lets not talk about everything that needs to be done to make the Market app not suck.
I think they should. While Sense is nice (even though I'm not using it lol) I think it would be a lot better if Google's stock UI was much better. There's a lot of rumors going around that Gingerbread has Google focused on a much better user experience so that they don't need things like Sense, MotoBlur, etc...And I hope so. I think Google should stack it's main stock options, and then if people want to be able to add extra stuff by putting on some kind of skin/extra UI then they should have the option. Just my 2 cents
OP you read my mind. I really do think google should spend some time upgrading the overall look and feel of the stock apps. I mean they have added about every feature you can possibly need but some basic things they have seemed to overlook. Especially their music, email, youtube, and other almost daily used apps should be more pleasing to use. But as someone mentioned earlier, their 3.0 gingerbread might sexy things up a bit.
I've been developing a client app for Delicious for android and its pretty close to being ready to release! Thanks to all the guys that helped me test it! If you find any issues, concerns, or have any suggestions to make it better, let me know in this thread or by opening an issue on the project site.
* UPDATE v1.0.0
Initial Market release! No real changes over 0.5.0.
Changelog
Features
Why DeliciousDroid? Aren't there other Delicious clients already in the market? Here are some of the features of DeliciousDroid:
Supports OAuth authentication (for Yahoo based accounts)
Notification of new bookmarks in inbox
Background sync for bookmarks and network contacts
Bookmarks are cached to allow offline viewing and to reduce network traffic
Accounts managed through Android's built-in account manager
New bookmarks by network contacts displayed as status updates
Bookmarks can be added in several ways:
A menu in the app
Directly from the browser via the "Share" menu
By long pressing a friend's bookmark and choosing "Add"
Bookmarks can be edited by long pressing and choosing "Edit"
Bookmark details can be viewed by long pressing and choosing "View Details"
Bookmarks can be deleted by long pressing and choosing "Delete"
Bookmark titles, tags and notes are searchable from both the global search and from within the app
Support for live folders, add a folder to your home screen that takes you straight to bookmarks within a specific tag
Code is licensed under the GPL v3 and is available on Github
Note: Requires Android 2.x (API Level 5+). Android 1.5 and 1.6 are not and will not be supported.
Known Issues
These are some of the known issues in the current build of DeliciousDroid. Feel free to open an issue on the Google code project site if you encounter a bug/issue not listed here, or have an idea for an enhancement.
Only a single Delicious account is currently supported.
Clicking inbox notification just takes you to the main app. As far as I can tell, delicious does not provide any way to get the contents of your inbox via the api. There is a feed for it, but it requires having a secret key that is used as a parameter.
Viewing the bookmark list for your network contacts only shows up to 100 bookmarks, this is a limitation of the api.
Syncing is handled by the OS and appears to happen every 24 hours. Froyo (Android 2.2) allows for setting a different sync interval, but I'd like to maintain compatibility with 2.1 for now.

Installation
DeliciousDroid is available on the Android Market. Make sure and rate it up or leave a comment if you like it!
Nice! I have *THREE* installed right now.. Two which view Delicious in two different ways, one I like the view of but it's online-only, the other I don't like the view, but it caches.. And the third to Share to Delicious.
Hopefully this one can replace all three. Having 3 is really ridiculous.
First observation; no obvious way to set up the account. No link from the application, doesn't forward you to the Accounts if it isn't set up. Just crashes. I suspect this is included in your "unelegant" mention, but wanted to say it. If there's no account set up, it should automatically send you to the Accounts settings IMO. And I think you should also make a quick link to the Account Setup page so the user can add/change, or even force a resync.
Once set up, mine synced, and I see "Network" recent but I'm seeing nothing else. Nothing in My Recent, nothing in My Tags. according to the Accounts setup, the sync is finished (It no longer says cancel sync). I tried to force it to sync again, and when I went back to the Accounts settings noticed Sync Delicious was not checked.
Maybe it didn't do this by default? It should unless you have no control over it? Once I checked this, my bookmarks showed up. Maybe I did something silly here and accidentally de-selected it.
Biggest problem so far; it seems to add random /'s onto the end of URLS!? I've got several bookmarks that won't load here, but I can load them fine on the PC. So I compared the URLs it's sending, and in my desktop it's h ttp://.....blah.html where in Android it's h ttp://....blah.html/ <-- trailing slash
So some stuff I've seen but looks like I could toss out the other 3 once they're fixed, so cheers!

Yep, that's what I meant about unelegent. I agree, it should either take you straight to the Accounts & Sync screen or at least display a message that you need to go there instead of just FC'ing. I'll try to incorporate that into the next build.

Yea, the Sync Delicious part is not checked by default, I suppose it probably should be (or at least there should be a message or something in the My Recent or My Tags screens directing you to go check it.

I'll have to look in to that. Its only adding them in the cache, so don't be worried that its corrupting all your bookmarks on the server. It'll be fixed in the next build.

I forgot to ask too, what device are you testing it on? I've only tried it in the emulator and on my heroc, so I'd be interested to see if its handling other devices/resolutions fine.
Also, are you using a legacy delicious account, or a yahoo based oauth one?
Working nice in 2.1 HTC Hero, but I found that every bookmark shows twice in both Recent and by tag views. And everytime I have to select a listview it asks me to open with Delicious or with... Music.
But working ok and plays nice with browser.

Yep, that's what I meant about unelegent. I agree, it should either take you straight to the Accounts & Sync screen or at least display a message that you need to go there instead of just FC'ing. I'll try to incorporate that into the next build.

It'll make the initial install a lot smoother, less confusing.

Yea, the Sync Delicious part is not checked by default, I suppose it probably should be (or at least there should be a message or something in the My Recent or My Tags screens directing you to go check it.

If you can, I'd suggest checking it by default.

I'll have to look in to that. Its only adding them in the cache, so don't be worried that its corrupting all your bookmarks on the server. It'll be fixed in the next build.

Cool. Odd that's getting tacked on there, but you'll fix it.

Nexus One using Enom's 2.12.3 ROM (I'm a little behind, not a ROM flashing addict) and using a legacy Delicious account.
I'm going to try Sharing from the browser later, and maybe try Yahoo, although Yahoo's password management is all screwed up on my account. I can't login to IM, but I can login to Yahoo Mail, and I can't login to some other thing.. all using the same Yahoo account. Maybe I need to change the password again, maybe it'll "sync" then.

If you uninstall/reinstall the app does it do it again? If so, can you provide me some more details about your setup? Delicious username, authentication type (delicious or yahoo), etc. You can PM me if you don't want to post it on here.

Ok, I think I know what's causing that. It should be fixed in the next build, probably tomorrow.
Uninstalled and reinstalled, repeated items are gone. BTW, using classic delicious login.
Thanks.
Great feedback so far guys, keep it comimg. I've just updated the app with fixes for everything mentioned so far, the download link is in the original post.
Changelog
Installed latest version over previous version on my i9000, Yahoo OAuth account.
All the information disappeared when I entered the app.
Tried to remove the account and retry, both sync options were ticked. No information in all 3 view options. Is there a problem retrieving? Is there anyway to force a re-sync?
edit : did an uninstall, reinstalled the latest version. working again.

Yea, while you're in the account in the accounts and sync screen hit menu, there should be a "Sync Now" option.
Thanks....totally didn't think to hit the menu button. Did as stated above, everything is fine.
Perfect. No more duplicated items so far, thank you, but still missing something. No more chosing between Delicious or Music when entering a list-view, but it still happens when selecting a single tag on second level. Might be the same issue, just different location so you didn't update that.
Thanks a lot, for this app and for this support.

Oops, yep, forgot that one. Its fixed for the next build. I've got a couple new features cooking up for it too, so stay tuned...
Tried to use Yahoo today, and it FC's on me. Looks like when it calls back from the OAuth it gets a 404, which pisses off your program.
Tradition login worked but I got nothing except "recent bookmarks".
So I uninstalled, reinstalled, put in Delicious username, synced, works now. Seems like there are issues with the upgrade?
It's also possible that it's a problem I launched it before it was finished syncing? I exited, even killed the program, re-entered, still had no bookmarks synced I could see, but it was fine after the reinstall. However after the reinstall, I waited for it to finish syncing first.. Possible a problem there?

Do you currently use delicious with that account? If you've never logged in to delicious with it then it wont work. You have to go in through the main delicious site to set up a new delicious account that gets linked to your yahoo id, it doesn't create one by default.
Another day, another update, version 0.2.1 is up. Download link on the original post.
http://code.google.com/p/deliciousdroid/wiki/Changelog
Edit: v0.2.0 had a nasty bug preventing Delicious accounts from being added, 0.2.1 fixes this.
Installed version 0.2.1 and works for my. This could be my favorite Delicious app. But on my Motorola Milestone (using Froyo), the font is so tiny, that I need magnify glasses to read it (looks like 4pt/5pt).
Haven't found an option to change the font size. Maybe this just occurs on high-res devices?

Could be, I haven't tested it on one yet. I'll get the emulator set up with the Milestone's specs and see if I can reproduce it. I'll either see if I can make a setting to change it or see if I can just detect the resolution and change it automatically.
I'm not sure if one of the multiple voice assistant apps already does this, but I haven't discovered one yet, so thought I would throw this out there.
Here is what I would like to do.
I have two android phones--One I don't use often, one daily driver. I would like to turn the first one into a sort of HAL system for the house, where I can ask it questions, and tell it to set reminders for me. Here is the catch, most apps like that now only set a local reminder on that particular phone. I want an app that syncs with other versions of itself on different devices and carries the reminder over to the other device as well. ".assistant" in the market does have an option now where you can sign in and use the same profile on different devices, but so far my testing has shown that it doesn't work very well.
Anyone have any ideas or comments?

I can suggest looking at Maluuba, it will sync with you Google calendar. So if you use Google, each device would sync with the same Google calendar, thus giving you the same info on each unit you sign into with. As for reminders, not sure but if set them as events it would then work. At least it is worth a look and try to see if this can resolve your issue.
Yeah. I have thought about going through Google Calendar. It would definitely be one way to do it. However most assistant apps don't set reminders through Google Calendar by default or can even be configured to. So you would have to make sure you set a Calendar reminder every time you wanted a reminder set. Just seems like a hassle when a good assistant app that syncs to different devices would do the job more efficiently. I'll look at the app you recommended.
While I'm a huge fan of Google products and services, there attitude of ignoring the masses when it comes to certain features that everyone wants/needs in the name of 'it's better' the way we designed it gets frustrating.
I'm hoping someone here knows a solution to this:
My contacts [not even the same name] keep getting merged/linked together automatically. It's happened on every Android device I've owned, and it's always happened to completely different names. I keep my contacts meticulously organized, and would never have a duplicate that would even need to be linked together. I've sent emails to Google asking how to disable it, etc. and they tell me it's a feature that everyone likes basically.
The most recent linking disaster was it linked my current girlfriend 'Lisa' with my ex-girlfriend 'Elizabeth' with TOTALLY DIFFERENT last names...WTF? So when I hit the dial button on the contact clearly labelled 'Lisa', and with her picture...I was actually calling my EX! Needless to say this led to a long argument that there was no way I could accidentally call me ex when trying to call my girlfriend, and blaming it on Google is ridiculous.
It's done this with a contact 'David', my then boss...and a contact labelled Dad...so when I tried calling work at 2AM (when I start) I actually woke up my dad in the middle of the night. There is no way of knowing when this happens unless I manually check every contact to see if there has been any merging or memorize everyone's phone number so I can see if it's really dialing the right number. It even linked my friend Charles, with Les Schwab Tire store once before.
Anyway, everything I've searched on the subject says that there should be some sort of notification asking me if I want to link/merge contacts, and to make sure to select 'NO'. I've never been notified though, and just get surprised at least once a month when my phone calls someone else, when I select a contact to dial.
Whoever knows the answer will save my life!
Thanks

It's happened on my Atrix running GB, also on my Note running ICS. It's happened to 3 other people's phone I know.
I think you might be on to something...it does seem to happen most often to names where I have no last name entered. It merged 'Lisa' with no last name to "Elizabeth" with a last name. It has merged 'Dad' with quite a few different names beginning with D.
They are not merged/linked when viewing contacts on the web in gmail...they are still separate there. It just merges them on the phone only. The most recent one I can't figure out the algorithm behind thinking these were duplicates and merging them automatically was: [Lowe's] and my friend [Lana], Hit her picture from my favorites menu, and got the Lowe's Home Improvement store. Her picture was displayed on the dialing screen and everything. Had to go into contacts, choose 'un-link', and sure enough it had automatically merged to two contacts after sitting separately for years.
This isn't Google. This behaviour is of the stock contacts applications by Motorola and Samsung. Each one modifies the Google contacts app in their own way, especially with regard to linking of contacts and social networking. You'll be better off asking in your device forum to see if others are facing this issue, and contacting Motorola or Samsung about it. It doesn't happen on AOSP Android ROMs, and on pure Android devices like the Nexus line.

This is definitely the best advice. I had this problem when I got the original Evo which was running Sense. Your phone might be trying to link similar contacts as well as facebook contacts if you've logged into the facebook app and let it sync contacts. I recommend going directly to your Google Contacts and doing a bit of organizing and cleaning. Once you have that cleaned up it will hopefully not mis-link your contacts again, even when you log into facebook or something like that.

Right. I did that when I first got my phone. I named all my contacts properly (First name, Last name) so the Sense Facebook sync linked my Facebook contacts correctly. If you want to keep nicknames rather than formal names, then adding all your contacts' email addresses from Facebook will also link them correctly regardless of name. Even if your email addresses and contact names don't match with Facebook, you have an option of manually going through all your contacts and linking them (in HTC Sense). You'll only need to do that once as Sense stores an '< HTCdata >' tag in the 'Notes' field of each contact indicating which Facebook contact it is linked to, so any future sync will immediately link the contacts based on this tag. The best Facebook sync app for AOSP ROMs, HaxSync, also makes use of these tags.
Organizing your Google contacts just once in your life goes a long way.

***UPDATE January 12, 2019***
Please note: This trick does NOT appear to work on the HD 8, 8th generation, FireOS 6.X.X.X. You likely have to be on FireOS 5.6.X.X or lower. Please leave comments of your FireOS version and whether this works or not.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This neat little trick deserves it's own thread. While you have to uninstall two Amazon system apps, you actually gain the use of other built in FireOS features as a result. If you still have all three Amazon Contacts apps enabled on your tablet, you're able to use this little customization. If not, you'll have to factory reset, as I'm not sure Google Contacts will work properly. You must also have Google Play, Google Account Services, Google Framework and Google Play services installed. You have to install the Google App as well. Please install Activity Launcher as well.
There is very low risk of doing any damage whatsoever to your device, but I feel obligated to say: I can't be responsible if you don't have the same results. So if something does go bad, the worst possible case is a factory reset.
1) Download and install Google Contacts 1.1. You can now export your contacts from a Android device. Just copy them to any storage as a vCard, .vcf etc. Then copy that to the storage of the device you want the contacts list. You can also port it over to your target device's storage using Google drive or Bluetooth.
2) Open Google Contacts and import the file from the storage directory you saved it in. You now have all your contacts. Now download and install Google Contacts Sync 5.1.1-1965118. Go back to Google Contacts. They should be syncing and you should now have more options available to you in Contacts settings. Surprisingly Contacts Sync also assists in syncing portions of your Google account as well as I show below.
3) In contacts, you should see an option to set your profile up. Tap it and Upload a picture and add some information. Tap the arrow in the top left when done, it will save automatically.
SURPRISES
4) Open Activity Launcher and tap the top left, all activities. Scroll down to Settings and tap it. Scroll to Users and tap it. You should see a screen similar to the one below; a 'profile' with the picture you saved in Contacts
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
5) Tap on the profile and give yourself a nickname and tap save. Making sure everything is saved, tap the recent apps button (square) and swipe it all out. Now press the power button so it locks your device. You just want to activate your lock-screen. Press it again to turn it back on and look in the top right of your lock screen. Tap on it.
6) Unlock your tablet. Swipe down the status bar all the way. Look at the top right corner. Tap on it a few times.
It was really fun to have found this. I'm glad I finally found a trick that didn't involve nuking more of Amazons apps or functions. Note that both of their contacts apps are 100% android based, so technically were not nuking anything that is directly related to FireOS.
What's even better? It ALL holds after rebooting :highfive: I don't think the 'profile' does much of anything except look cool and expands a little to show your nickname. If you do find other functions for it, please let us know Though I think the way my device is setup currently, this is just a little bit of fun customization.
P.S. If anyone has a problem with the shirtless picture, I'll upload new ones. :good:
EDIT: You can manually uninstall Amazon Contact app and the Amazon Contact Sync app. **DO NOT UNINSTALL AMAZON'S CONTACT STORAGE APP.** Doing so will result in your contacts not working at all. So far I've yet to find a fix, but it's really not necessary.
If a more automated version suits you and check out the Amazon Fire Utility and see if it's right for you
***UPDATE September 1, 2017:*** Google has released their contacts app to be compatible with all Android devices running 5.X and above. You can go to the Play Store and update the app here. You MUST KEEP the contact sync app if you already have it. The little bit of customization as a result of adding contacts, remains the same I believe. Just tap 3 bars at top left > settings > tap your name > set yourself up. I just flashed Fire Nexus to my Fire 7 and the process was still applied. I am not sure why it just doesn't add your picture already associated with your Google Account (if you already have one selected).
If most of your contacts have been duplicated after updating contacts app, go to your google Contacts page on the web and look at the menu on the left. If there isn't one, tap the 3 bars at top left and select duplicates. That will bring up all your duplicate contact names. Then select 'merge all' which will merge them together including the info.
You can no longer uninstall Amazon apps if you are on FireOS 5.4.0.1 or greater.

as far as I know, Google didn't make a 'contact storage app' for 5.1. I see some for 5.0 and I am not sure if they will work on here, but here is a list of APKs. Please note I am not sure if these APKs are official or not. Use at your own risk.

Pretty much. It's just customization. Nothing fancy. You would also be surprised how hard it was to get the right mix of Contacts APKs.

I just installed Google Contacts and when running it, it would complain that Google Accounts is not installed, despite it is due to it being one of the four apk's for getting google play working. So would installing Google Contacts Sync allow Google Contacts to download the contacts stored in a google account? If yes, then what is the point of exporting/importing your contacts via a file?

Try installing the Google app. Usually that helps. And yes you need Google contacts sync referenced in the first post. Sync and the Google app also help with some account sync issues.
EDIT: also install YouTube. You need it in order to keep the 4 Google APKs up-to-date.
Is anyone able to help a little? I'm trying to get Handouts working on my 3 daughters Amazon fires. Their contacts from google aren't importing/syncing, so I thought the obvious thing to do would be to install Google Contacts. However when I try this I can't sign in. I get a message saying that there's "no app installed to handle this."
All 3 fires have had Nova Launcher installed, Google Play Services, Google Account Manager etc installed. Hangout physically works fine, but it's the syncing with contacts that's the problem.

In the first thread, make sure Google contacts sync is installed. Use the link I provided. Also make sure 'contacts storage' is installed. If not, you'll have to find the right APK and install that as well.
Still working 9/26/2018
I just needed to install the following things on my Kindle Fire 7 (5th Gen) Fire OS 5.6.2.0
I had these apps installed previously and the Google Contacts app was not working. It didn't allow me to sync my account.
Google Play
Google Framework
Google Play services
I did have to install them to make Google Contacts app to work (I don't know if all of them are needed, but since I was following the instructions step by step I did install all of services and apps recommended):
Google Account Services
Google App
Activity Launcher
Google Contacts Sync 5.1.1
Instead of installing the Contact apk file provided, I did install the new Google Contacts from the Google Play Store.
After having all that installed. I didn't need to do anything else. I just did open the Google Contacts app and could switch between my google accounts and my contacts were there.
Thanks !!!!

i thought you said to not remove it , so i left it alone
i did see that my contacts are now showing up in the duo app though
but i still can not make or receive any calls ,they all says invite and i use gmail to send the link but it does work
if i video call myself with duo it rings on my phone not on my tablet , duo app on the tablet says my number and sign out so it is logged in
the old contacts app force closes when trying to open , neither duo nor contacts will update from the play store

Yes. You need to disable the Amazon contacts app or hide it. You also need the sync adapter too. If you can disable Amazon sync adapter, do that too. Did you download the contact apps in the op? You need the sync adapter and it needs to be installed prior to installing contacts.

yes i followed the OP directions but it said to install the contacts .apk 1st and then to restore the contacts file and then to install the sync .apk , so should i delete them both and then start over but disable amazon contacts and amazon sync apps 1st or can i just disable amazon contacts and sync and then install the google sync apk and then the contacts apk from the OP? in the OP it said to install the contacts 1.1 apk 1st then if you want to to restore a backup of your contacts and then to install the google sync .apk
also how do i disable or hide the amazon sync and contact app?
can i do it on the tablet or do i need to connect through ADB and use command like PM hide?
what would the ADB commands be ?
