I just for my s3 and like the stock touch wiz but obviously I have to run a Rom so any suggestions on a Rom that keeps a lit off the features ad the stock? I personally like the screen shot feature but I wouldn't mind going to jb if I can still have those features thanx

I went with CleanRom with the touchwiz launcher and leaving out all the Verizon bloatware. Similar experience to stock but faster and smoother. Nice and stable in my experience. This is my work as well as personal phone, so I'm putting a lot of weight to stability.
If it weren't for that I'd probably go for one of the CM10 roms - love CM10 on my Kindle Fire.
Have to agree that Clean Rom is a good one. Any of the ICS ( 4.04) based touchwiz roms are somewhat similar, there are custom kernels available, Imo ( Rootzwiki forums) and KToonz on XDA are 2 of my favorites. There are themes available for some of these also. Jellybean Touchwiz is still a work in progress, I am currently on the Incubus Jellywiz RL5 custom, and its been very stable. Keeps what you like about Touchwiz, and adds the features of Jelly Bean such as Google Now, to the mix. These are all leaked ports from different carriers, so there can be some bugs or things that don't work such as simultaneous voice and data until we get a Verizon leak. CM10 has always been a favorite, but it also has a ways to go on this device, most notably with the RIL which has caused the strength of the data signal, and in particular switching from 4g to 3g to be an issue. I have had the best luck with the AOKP, Slim Bean, and Black Bean Roms in regards to AOSP.
ICS = CleanROM or Synergy
JB = ParanoidAndroid
Just flashed to CleanRom - very satisfied so far.
I have been testing out many of the roms here for my new galaxy s3 coming from my htc droid incredible.
When i picked and chose my rom on the incredible there were things about sense i liked things I did not like but over all the performance was varied wildly most of the time it was asop or akop that was higher preforming on my inc so my choice was easy i ran akop roms most of the time infact my inc is running akop jellybean right now it runs great with the obvious issues of it just is not as fast as my gs3 nor does it have the big screen my gs3 has.
My experience with the galaxy s 3 has been rather different the way it organized its file system and favors internal storage over the sd card has been somewhat annoying as well i have found the reverse of my experiences with my incredible to be true now touch wiz has better performance than asop but it has more bugs and issues than running ported roms on my htc. While asop works great on it and is mostly bug free it just doesn't have the speed and feel of touch wiz and i keep wanting to go back to a tw based rom.
Im currently running
eclipse 2.1 10/20/12 with ktoonsez kernel 10/22/12

What bugs and issues on TW are you referring to? And speed? I definitely disagree. TW is bloated as hell.. 700+mb compared to 150mb on aosp. Over clock with the ktweaker app up to 2.1ghz and change your governor/scheduler to sio/smartassv2. Perhaps that will change your mind.

overclocking to 2.1 is pointless and does nothing but drain the battery faster. touchwiz imo is very close to the performance of aosp. i like both at this point and probably favor aosp slightly once the ril is perfected.
I wont defend the fact tw is bloated as hell i about flipped my **** when i saw the roms were 500+mb and like i had said i am used to the incredible where the size of the rom maxed out was 250mb literally unless you took some of the 750mb htc allocated for user apps.
That said I dont know if the cpu/gpu drivers for touch wiz are different or what but every asop rom i have tried is slower than every tw rom i have tried is slower not that it makes a huge difference as i am running a asop atm i do miss a few features of the touch wiz base most are cosmetic.
Also I am not going to overclock to achieve the same result that asop roms should easily achieve. sio did help a little though. Also not like the test im doing to see how my phone is doing. antutu and quadrant I am seeing a difference of 1500-2000 points in quadrant and 1200 in antutu. And those are not really that great of a way to tell anything.
Until I got the G3 I always ran aosp on any device where it was possible.
The G3 is a different story however, I have tried every ROM available & at this point I am completely baffled why anybody would put up with a buggy aosp ROM (& every one has bugs) when the TW ROMs are just as fast/smooth etc & everything works perfectly.
No matter what ROM I try, I keep coming back to the setup in my sig for my DD.

Yeah coming from a GNex I figured I would hate TW but I actually like it. I kind of got bored with AOSP honestly. It's nice having all these features without having to use ROMs that hacked the features in in a sloppy manner.
As much as i like jb, aosp is slower and a battery hog. Im on cm10 atm but have beans rom on backup.
personally i lasted 2 days on aosp, found it buggy and the phone is quick w TW so I don't see a need for more speed.
running beans build 14 right now and i really like the ridiculously large level of customization you can do yourself. this is where ROMs should head IMHO, the devs don't make the design/theme choices but leave it up to the user to be able to have many choices after the ROM is flashed.
so great to have choices.
First off, I am interested in a vanilla ROM that is stable--what is the best currently available for this phone? CM, AOKP, PA, etc. I would prefer Jelly Bean, but if ICS is more stable, I will definitely take that.
Here is what I need to be working:
GPS
Simultaneous Voice + 3G
Video
Camera
Wifi Tethering
Heavy Customization
Decent Battery Life
NFC
Now, given the ROM you recommend, what are some kernels recommended for that ROM? Again, I'm looking for the ROM to be smooth, but would sacrifice a little performance for better battery life.
I plan on purchasing a used (a week old) one from someone off of Craig's List tomorrow (we are meeting at a Verizon store)--is there anything I should specifically be checking before I decide on a final purchase for the phone?
Thanks ahead of time for any advice anyone may have!
Ninja-edit: I obviously plan on rooting this, and by the looks of it, if it received an OTA, I can't unlock the bootloader? Will this affect my ability to root and flash custom ROMs at all?
you should get your phone and flash a few touchwiz roms, and a few AOPS roms and decide what you want. a nice compromise is beans build. i guess its themed after AOSP but ive never flashed it. theyre different experiences. ive had good luck with KTkernel but others run other kernels. never tried any others.
youll get many recommendations here both TW and AOSP, because basically any rom you flash will have all of those features working. (unsure about simultanous voice + data but i think thats on all?)
dont mean to give such a blehhhhhh answer, but only you can decide on what you run

I'm really not a fan of Touchwiz at all. Do you have a specific AOSP ROM that you'd recommend?
running AOKP M1 with the 11/13 ktkernel. i keep trying others but always come back to AOKP. its just great for me and everything I use works.
I ran paranoid android for a month or so without any issues too. ive had great luck with the AOSP roms for the S3.
if those interest you...king kang is a combination of AOKP and ParanoidAndroid. I flashed and went back to AOKPM1 though.
Thanks for the reply! I'll give AOKP a shot and report back here with how it works!
I currently loaded Liquidsmooth Rom with Android 4.2.2 for my my Verizon Galaxy S3, and I was wondering if there was any way to get the wifi tether to work for this? I have got the Trevo mod for wifi, but I still cannot get the wifi to work. I am using the stock kernal so not sure if I need to try a new kernal instead?
In trying to figure out how to get the wifi to work, I was wondering if I would be better off going to a Touchwiz rom instead. Is there a 4.2.2 Touchwiz rom thats stable? I don't really want to customize anything I really was happy with the stock look, just would like better battery life, signal, and the ability to wifi tether, and have found I am not the biggest fan of liquidsmooths layout/look compared to the stock version I was on. Can anyone recommend a Rom on 4.2.1 or 4.2.2 that will give me what I am looking for?
Thanks

I would check out Synergy or Beans. Have run both with great battery life, 28 to 36 hours with 4 to 6 hours of screen time on extended battery with each. I currently am running Beans 12 over Synergy as I don't care for the screen rotations. Also both include the TrevE wifi tether.

There is no 4. 2 touchwiz ROM for this device. Do some research and you will find that it was Google that released 4.2 and that independent devs are likely to get a stable version before manufacturers do. Touchwiz isn't stock it is Samsung's version of android. AOSP is what the android OS really looks like before anyone messes with it. As for a stable ROM most of the touchwiz ROMs are stable, all claimed to have great battery life but only a few have free WiFi tethering. beyond the two the previous guy mentioned I don't know any other ROM.
I did a lot of searches to try to get the wifi tether to work with liquidsmooth, is there any solution that I am missing here? I would be interested in trying to still with that rom if I can at least get the tether to work.

I heard Samsung leaked the international 4.2.1 TW. Maybe someone will develope a ROM based on that leak for the Verizon.

Due to the different specs of the international and US versions of the S 3 it is difficult to port it. It will take longer to port.
I have to admit that I'm getting upset about my N5 several times a day now. Since I updated to Lollipop, I'm experiencing random issues with WiFi and 4G data connectivity, my LG G Watch is randomly disconnected sometimes and the worst thing presubably is the memory leak bug - when the phone is running for a few hours, I can't even browse the web with music playing in the background as the music is stopped when I open up more than one tab in Chrome. Obviously, I don't even think of navigating with Google Maps while playing music, and the Google Now launcher is redrawing every time I hit the home button.
I actually never had a custom ROM on my N5 as I was happy with the unmodified stock ROM, but now, I really need to get another ROM to be able to properly use the phone again.
After quickly browsing the forums, I think Cataclysm or something like CM12 or Paranoid Android is what I'm looking for. I figured out that the first one is based on 5.0.1 while the latter are based on 5.0.2... is there any noticable difference? And the most important question: Is the memory leak bug fixed in one of those?
Which ROM would you recommend if I just want to have a ROM that runs very well overall (I don't want to be required to flash every weekly build for bugfixes) and is updated fairly fast when new Android versions are released?
Either downgrade to KitKat (my recommendation) or wait for 5.1.

There is no memory leak. Most reliable ROM is stock one. I would recommend 5.0.1, root, remove bloatware (yes, even Google can do that) and integrate all updates into system. Off course as @_MetalHead_ said, with 4.4.4 and Xposed you will also get a SuperRom.

So the custom ROMs won't help with the issues I'm experiencing?
Downgrading to KitKat wouldn't be pretty as I'm using Lollipop's DNG capture feature with "L Camera" a lot...

Custom ROM will only bring you more issues.
"The thread reveals that several Nexus devices ranging from the Nexus 7 (2013 model), the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5 were affected by the bug." (from your article) - I own all of them and never ever experienced such a bugs on non of them.
There is a lot off diferent users with their own habits and (no)knowledge. Google must answer some way.

Honestly, I've had nothing but problems with Lollipop. I've tried stock, and a couple custom ROMs and there was no difference. I don't think it performs that much better than KK and I'm also not a fan of how it looks so I decided to keep all my devices on KK. Hopefully 5.1 will take care of all of the issues, I might upgrade then.

Doesn't have much effect, if any at all, people said they still have "memory leak issues".
If anything, there are probably multiple "memory leaks", and non-developers on XDA will spam links to "fixes" in every single thread/forum section, every time they're posted, and are under a placebo effect.
Then there are also the people who spam about Android 5.1 as if it's a huge improvement over 5.0–5.0.2.
The best band aid for this I've found is to use a kernel with zram compression like Faux kernel and the FauxClock app. I never though I'd have to resort to using compressed ram on my Nexus 5 but it was a godsend on reducing launcher redraws on an HTC Evo LTE running Sense with only 1GB of ram. The issue still pops up but much less frequently for me. BTW I have not run any comparison testing and this statement is pure anecdotal. I just have repeatedly observed on the same rom with the same exact setup for 2-3 months that using 3 kernels without zram required a reboot every day. On the same exact setup with zram I could go 3-4 days. A repeatable test for me was to browse on Chrome for a bit then go to the home screen. Without zram the launcher would redraw almost every time which was the same issue I had on Sense. With zram the launcher never redrew. Poo on Google for letting this issue go on this long without a fix.
I finally went back to lot kat for the same reason a month a go and couldn't be happier. The aggressive memory leak caused me to reboot several times a day. I liked cataclysm, but it's a modified stock nexus rom. So it contains all the same bugs the stock nexus rom does like the memory leak. It only adds new features.
Android lollipop memory leak not fixed in cm 12.1 with android 5.1.1 sources!!
I am using cm 12.1 latest nightlies which is based on android 5.1.1 sources and still I am faxing the lollipop memory leak issue and applications are restarting and the free Ram reduces up to 400 mb with no reason and the Apps will start restarting. I don't know when this memory leak will be fixed!
