[Q] RMA Prep Question - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
My Nexus 5 is making a cracking/popping noise when I touch the screen in the bottom right corner and I get all kinds of colored lines across the screen. I attached some pictures I have and no, the phone was never dropped. The lines go away when I press on the screen but come back until I reboot. I am planning on contacting Google for a warranty issue through google play store but I have a few questions. I have CyanogenMod M8 installed on it along with TWRP recovery along with Titanium Backup Pro and a slew of other paid apps and customizations for rooted phones.
1) I've seen mixed answers regarding restoring the phone prior to RMA..will they take my phone back with it being flashed or should I revert it to factory?
2) If going back to factory condition, should I do that BEFORE I contact them and they call me back regarding the phone issues?
3) If I want the new phone setup exactly like my current phone is now, what would I do? Is it as easy as making a full backup with TWRP and moving it to my computer then when the new phone comes in, get TWRP setup again then recover from the backup?
Thanks for any help you can give.!

I would flash the factory image before you send it back and restore the tamper flag. No need to do that before you call then as they'll probably have you try to do a factory reset.
You can make a nandroid in twrp, but DO NOT backup the efs partition. You'll be able to flash that on your new phone

Definitely restore it to stock using the factory images before sending it back. People have mixed opinions about locking the bootloader or not, but it's very easy to do so why not?
I would restore it to stock before I called them. They may ask you to do some troubleshooting and might want you to tell them what some of the fields say in "About Phone" including the build number, and that's easier to give them if you're on stock rather than CM
You can take a TWRP backup, but as mentioned above do not backup the EFS partition. If you restore EFS to a different phone you will lose your IMEI and will not be able to get cell service
I personally wouldn't bother with resetting the tamper flag but it can't hurt. I RMA'd two Nexus 4s before I even knew about the tamper flag and didn't have an issue. From my experience as long as it's back to stock Google doesn't seem to care if it's been rooted before.

Thanks for the information! Guess It's time to grab the LG flashtool since that will restore and reset the flag in one shot. I saw a nifty threat on it in the forum. Thanks again!

Go back to stock first. They will make you do all the troubleshooting junk first factory reset etc. Once they determine that its hardware they will start the RMA process. I just RMA'd mine and went all the way back to stock locked bootloader and tamper flag reset just to be safe.

I went to make a backup and I attached a screenshot of my options, I don't see any EFS partition?

Just use twrp's typical backup. Don't select anything extra. Boot, system, data is all you need

[Q] Replacement On The Way. Questions Inside....

I decided to get a replacement phone to see if a newer one fixes any of my issues, but I have a few questions.
- It's rooted w/nvflash/CWM. Do I just need to use the nvflash app to replace the stock bootloader, then unroot, then factory reset?
- If I make a nandroid backup before doing this, once I get the new one, can I root it, nvflash it, and then flash my nandroid to it? Or is that not possible?
Thanks guys!
That's exactly what I just did yesterday waiting for my replacement to show up. Stock bootloader -> unroot -> factory reset. Dunno about the nandroid backup, I won't be using mine. I want to start fresh.
Nandroids are fine as long as the device your restoring is the same
Just for reference. I got the new phone, rooted/nvflash'd and restored my nandroid to the new device with no issues. I then un-nvflash'd, un-rooted, and did a factory reset to send the old one back to T-Mo.
No issues so far.
I'm on my 4th replacement and it should be arriving any minute. I just unrooted and reset, like the other person said. With the one I have arriving I'm going to root and restore from my other backup. Its very possible my friends, cheers!
I just wanted to update again and felt it wasn't necessary to start a new thread.
The replacement I got was significantly worse than my original. It was rebooting every 5-10 and sometimes it would reboot immediately upon rebooting. My rep sent me out my 2nd replacement and it has been up for 21 hours without a single reboot. This time I did not restore my Nandroid and started fresh. Like I said, just wanted to update.

Starting Over after TWRP and Rooting

I installed TWRP, then rooted 10.4.2.18.
I need to start over as well, between the random app loading, gestures and stop, I think from scratch would be nice.
Can I do a factory data reset?
I have a backup from TWRP but I didn't label it very clearly and I'm not sure what it is.
It's unlocked and rooted - by doing the reset I'm assuming I'll loose it the root - am I correct?.
OK, so I asked what:
1. the wrong forum?
2. The wrong site?
3. Worded it wrong?
4. Too noob?
I could go on. Over a 100 people looked and NO-one can even point me to the right place if it's been answered before, or have an answer!?

You can try factory data reset from settings app if you like. It is a variable on what you will loose and gain. It is a good place to start. Don't do wipe from the bootloader menu or wipes formats from twrp.
Note: Some wipes and formats can be used in twrp in the case where you will flash a rom after, when flashing stock it seldom helps.
Note: Twrp allows you to choose the name for your backup
You can also flash any of the asus stock firmware but you will have stock recovery (instead of twrp), probably loose root, and all of your apps and data.
My choice for best asus stock firmware is 10.4.2.18. It is not best for everyone but I like it.
Good Luck!
Sorry I didn't notice your post. For everyone else I'm sure they didn't wish to deliver such iffy information.
For future reference, a factory reset will take your ROM back to the point of a fresh install. You will lose all data that has been added since first flashing your ROM. If you were running a custom rooted ROM then you will not lose root. If you go back and flash a non-rooted ROM then you WILL lose root.
If you have data that you need to keep, I recommend using an app like Titanium Backup. Go in and choose to do a batch backup up all your apps. Once you have done a factory reset, you can sign back into Google Play and download Titanium. You can then go in and restore the apps you want. I don't recommend installing all of those apps with their data. Titanium gives you multiple options on how and what you want to restore. Only install the individual app data that you must to have. Usually, I'll restore all of my apps with no data at all. I will then go back in and individually restore the app data that I need.
If changing a ROM, restoring app data for all of your apps can have adverse side effects. That is why I say to only install what you need. Hope this helps. :good:
the best way to start from scratch is do a factory reset then use fastboot to upgrade you're firmware

That's what I wanted to know - and do - but I wasn't sure what was replaced when I loaded twrp.

I did label them, I backed it up - I think - right after I installed twrp and rooted it, ( I usually do ) but I'm not 100% sure so I didn't want to try and screw it up.

I'm generally not too concerned about loosing stuff, as long as I know WHAT I lost, so I can replace.

Checked and that's what I'm on and so far happy with it.
I un-installed a ton of apps, while I was waiting for an answer, and the thing doesn't seem possessed any more, so I'm adding them back in one at a time giving each 2-3 days.

ABSOLUTELY no reason for an appology. I'd done a search and not come up with anything I could use, and couldn't believe no-one had done this before.
Everything sounds good.
I need to give you one piece of info.
The only thing flashing twrp replaces is stock recovery. Everything else remains the same.
Good Luck!

BUT when you do a data backup and reset, doesn't the system draw FROM the "stock" recovery?

If you are talking about backup with twrp, by default system, emmc, and data are backed up.
Reset erases user apps and data; all basic data would need to be entered as if you had just purchased the unit.

OH! I was under the impression that it read an image from to the boot parition/recovery partition and wrote that. NOW I get it.
THANK you.
Last question - If I do this (installed es file manager last night and the bloody thing wild), is root.signed.zip still good for rooting this? It's unlocked and 10.4.2.18.

I use es file manager for working with both sdcards. I have used it since I received this tablet and find it very useful. Maybe uninstall and reinstall. For a root browser I use rom toolbox pro.
I have not used root.signed.zip but downloading and looking at the installation I don't find a problem. I'd say try it.

Just saw your post - don't know where I went ...
I do not have a custom ROM, so what you are saying is no matter how I start over, I'm going to have to re-install TWRP, re-root it and ad apps - correct? It seems to me that settings|backup and reset, I'll leave TWRP intact just reset.
OK, I'm somewhat screwed I think - if anyone's out there (sorry pretty frustrated), I cleaned the D-Cache and the cahe, better but not good. Then a settings|reset and the from within the OS and the same problem does what it wants when it wants, opens programs (usually google voice), pops up the window to set wallpaper, freezes etc. Then I restored a backup from early January from WITHIN TWRP, and cleaned the caches - same. Restored another and cleaned same. I have cleaned the system, as I cannot see/figure out which clean rom custom I can use on this, as I think that might be my only hope. Other than tossing in the junk pile as it's unusable like this.
Whatever is going on is IN the system, which leads me to a custom rom as my only possible salvation - (think I just said that, hum).
Any ideas?

[Q] restore nandroid backup with locked bootloader?

I had to get a replacement galaxy s3 through Asurion because the power button broke on my phone. I have a nandroid backup of my old phone however the new replacement phone has the locked bootloader so I guess I can't install CWM? How can I restore my nandroid backup to the new phone?
Assuming you have 4.3 installed on your new phone, try safestrap in the development section but I think it only works for 4.3 tw roms. If you still have your old phone, either replace your power switch or find someone to do it for you.

I tried to install TWRP on my old phone to do a backup from that but it looks like it bricked my phone. It won't even light up when I connect it to the charger now....
I was able to use safestrap and install the ROM I was using and I have a GOBackup backup of my apps and data. However it looks like it didn't backup any of the application data, specifically Google Authenticator. So now it looks like I'm screwed and locked out half my accounts.. Is there any way to unpack the tar from the CWM backup to retrieve app settings?
Nevermind, I figured out how to extract the tar and pulled the Authenticator database out and restored it on the new phone. Setting up and customizing everything else from scratch is going to be a PITA though.

[Q] Help please. Accidentally deleted Blinkfeed and phone won't boot

I was mucking around with Titanium Backup and froze (*not uninstalled) Blinkfeed. Unfortunately, this caused my phone to crash. Now it will not boot. I am able to get it into CWM recovery, but I never made a .zip to recover from and now I just feel stupid. Is there any way to recover this?
Am I able to do a factory reset in order to get the phone working again? (And also, will this remove my root) The data I'm not terribly concerned about. All important pictures have been backed up already and there are no documents that are dire. I just need a working phone.
Thank you for any help you can provide!
I would just put a rom zip onto a microSD and flash that.
Although I wouldn't have thought that freezing BlinkFeed would crash your phone and get it stuck in a bootloop, so what do I know?
Performed a factory reset and that doesn't seem to have fixed the problem.
I'm going to look into flashing a rom but that is something I haven't done before and I'm not too comfortable with it.
Do you have any suggestions? I just want to keep the standard stuff (what it was shipped with). I was mainly rooting to get rid of bloatware and have a bit more freedom.
EDIT: Rebooted a second time and the factory reset seems to have taken hold. I'm back at square one but it is far better than nothing.
EDIT2: Not quite back at square one as my backup through Titanium Backup still existed and I was able to utilize that. Lost some contacts, call history, and texts. That's all!
Glad to hear that you were able to fix it. If you ever need a stock Sense rom, I would recommend CleanRom. Watch out though, its really easy to become a flashaholic
i did the same thing : )

Need help urgently

Hello xda forums.
Today I decided I would flash the ROM for euphoria lollipop after a long time of being on kit kat. I backed up, system restored, and flashed the new rom and was able to boot into the OS without any issues, other than the fact that all my contacts were gone!
In an attempt to save my contacts I went back into recovery and tried to restore my backup. After doing this, when booting I would still boot into Lollipop, but the bottom bar would disappear and I wasn't able to navigate anything. After factory restoring once more to restore the backup, the backup had disappeared. Now on my phone the only thing I'm able to do is get into recovery. Is there any way for me to get the ROM onto the phone again so I can install it? The nexus 5 doesn't show up under devices and drives in 'This PC'.
Thanks in advance for your help. I really need to get my phone back up and running, even if it means having no contacts
It sounds like you wiped your entire device including the os and your backup. You're going to have to flash the factory image to get it running again. If your contacts were backed up to Google you should get term back after you install the factory image.

Your reply is very much appreciated.
How do I go about flashing the factory image?
Edit: Okay! Got everything done and Euphoria installed properly. I feel like I learned a bunch too! Thank you for your assistance!
