[Q] file removal question "cache_vts_GMM.3" "0" "4" - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, in attempt to keep my phone as clutter free as possible I want to know what these files are or if it is safe to remove them (found by Clean Master) --> "cache_vts_GMM" and there are couple of them with ends of ".3" ".0" .4" ."1"

I would not be worrying about what are probably tiny files.....you could cause serious problems for yourself too if you delete the wrong thing.
Basically a good rule of thumb....if you don't know what it is.....its probably supposed to be there.
And try Google if you must know.

[Q] WHY can't you delete preinstalled apps?

Hi folks,
As you can tell from the title I'm a smartphone noob and didn't realise you couldn't do this (see the amount of people I've spoke to who didn't even notice you can't delete apps that come with the phone! What's with that?).
But as you can see I emphasised the 'why', 'cause I've searched everywhere but can't find a reason as to why. I'd assume it was just so you can't delete bloatware, but even the Nexus that runs on stock Android has the same issue.
Does anyone know why (or guess why) you can't delete preinstalled apps?
Thanks!
If your device is rooted, all you have to do is download Root Explorer from the market and delete the APK files from the system.
They're located in: /system/app/
You have to press "Mount R/W" on the top right of the application before you can read and write. Make sure hit "Mount R/O" in the same spot after you're done editing though. Also, make sure that what you're deleting isn't something you need and you should probably back-up the .APK files to be safe. If you mess up and don't back up, you can still just re-flash or re-download GAPPS without a problem. Have fun .
Thanks
I was thinking about rooting my phone actually, I'll check that out (I'm sooooo going to back up everything lol).
But! The question was WHY you can't delete the preinstalled apps. Does anyone know the reasoning behind it?
You're welcome mate .
Just for safety I suppose. And you should definitely root your phone, it'll open a whole new world for you!

That and basically without rooting your phone it's basically like a comps guest profile. A lot less can mess up if you can't play around with certain files/settings.
Makes sense.
Thanks folks
I am also unhappy that i cannot uninstall apps that came with the phone and i have yet to find a good reason as to why not. most of the apps i want to delete are free on the market, already compatible with my phone and can be deleted or uninstalled without causing any major issues.
tmpchr says "manufacturer /operator agreements..."
ok ill buy that, sounds like a good business opportunity, (i would do it) good advertising, shared/reduced costs...etc. but the end user should still have the option to remove.
I totally agree with you guys, at the very beginning I had so big apps installed on my device (motorola xt720), for instance MotoNav was about 1.5 GB and spoiled my battery life. Luckily I discovered how to root the device and now, using "root uninstaller" that you find in the market, all of them are just a memory
You could also use Titanium Backup to remove programs.

[Q] Desktop message query

I will apologise immediately for my noobness but Ive had the nexus s for a few months and I somehow managed to add a message onto my standby/homescreen shortly after getting it.
I cant for the life of me remember how I did it, ie whether it was through using an APP or not?!
I now have no idea how to remove it (I dont really want to have to reformat the whole phone)
Whatever setting it was, it allowed me to create a message using 3 seperate lines the first of which being my name (Incase I forgot it ;-) )
Does anybody have a clue how i remove this message?
Cheers guys.

[Q] App Associations vs. ro.da1.enable?

Hi folks,
I've recently updated to the ICS RUU provided by HTC. I had problems changing the defaults in 'App Associations', untill I folowed the workaround provided here.
While searching for that solution I found a number of threads which advocate hacking the system/build.prop file, the method is spelt out here or here and using the results of this instead of the 'app associations' menu.
Just wondering if anyone has had any problems after changing "ro.da1.enable" or is it fairly reversable?
A lot of people who have done it seem to do so because WhatsApp links crash otherwise. Is there a benefit if you don't use WhatsApp?
I've done a fair bit of searching but haven't come accross any screen shots for what changing "ro.da1.enable" gives you. People say it gives what they had pre ICS but since they come from people using different ROMs I'm not sure what that means.
Does it have any implications I should be aware of when backing up or changing ROM?
Thanks in advance for any info!
Simple answer, it does enable the so called data tapping, which means a dedicated app is opened instead of i.e. the browser.
I'd say that the change has no further implications that I'm aware of and you don't need to consider any additional backup steps.
If your concerned about making any change, before making it ie editing the build.prop (in this case) make a copy so that you can revert it easily if you need and always take a full nandroid backup before making any change.
When changing ROMs the new ROM will come with its own build.prop file so the change may be undone.

[Q] Old ROM Folders

Hi,
Ok so I've been using a few custom ROMs on my Note over the past year and have have decided now I have JB4.3 I'll probably be leaving it alone for a while, at least for a very stable KitKat ROM which I'm not expecting any minute, and Im pretty happy with the 4.3 TBH.
However when going thru my files and folders in file manager I see that I have the usual "0" folder with "Android, data, DCIM" ect inside, however in that folder I also have another "0" folder with another set of "Android, data, DCIM" ect inside that.
I used Root Cleaner to (hopefully) clean all the "useless" folders ect from my device however the 2nd "0" folder and its contents remain on my tablet, Im sure they take up little room and resources but if possible I would like to get rid of them from my device, I dont want to just delete the second "0" folder without checking its safe to do so as I'm far from an expert, or maybe I need to go about it another way, but I would like to get them gone if possible.
Any help would be great, thanks in advance for reading
Best Regards 557953

What do you mean here... It sounds like your saying you have to "use" the app first in order for it to be moved or erased? Which im sure is not the case.
Respond with details of what ROM/ android version, build, memory option, etc. These are things needed to know before any help can be given because suggestions vary especially if you are rooted.
... But try this first, go to settings --> Storeage --> Internal memory and respond with either a screen shot or details if privacy is an issue. I would figure you will find the 'heavy' items there to delete... usually multimedia and not apps are the culprit.
