[Q] China phones SD destroyer!!! - General Questions and Answers

Hello everyone, i have an UBTEL_U8 china phone octacore with Android 4.2.1. It only has 1gb of internal memory plus 12gb of rom. For this reason, beacuse i can't move apps to rom memory, i need an sd card to move apps on. I bought a Lexar 16gb class 6 sd card 4 months ago, and everything works fine until yesterday. I used link2SD app for moving apps to sd and i made a partition ext2 into the sd with AParted app.
everythig works fine, until i had to dismount my sd from phone and mount it again, because i had to change the partiton format in ext4 to ext2 (no really good reason to do this, i was trying if it was faster to moving data then ext2 filesytem). Once dismounted, wheni tried to mount my sd, the phone says that it's damaged!!! I inserted it with the Lexar card reader into the pc but tells me that i have to format, but if i try to format it's not working...
The same thing happened with another lexar 16gb card on my previous china phone, it broke my sd during charching!!! when it was charching the touchpad went crazy and system unstable and when i removed the phone from charching the memory was dead.. It's not done yet.
I had another china phone that stole my on march, a copy of Note 3. My sd card broke with no reason.. but i was using a similar app to link2SD for extend memory (apparently all china phones have only 1gb internal memory... why!!!!???)
So, in 1 year i changed 3 phones, 3 china phones, and all of them destroyed my sd cards... Now i want to know if it's possible to save the sd cards, and i want to know if the problem is really inside the phone, or it can be fault of linking apps to sd, and so if it's fault of link2sd and Aparted.
Next time what sd i have to buy? a quality one that resists to china phones maybe..
Thank you for you help..

SD Card capacity

I've read 2 different things about how much memory the Captivate will see. Does anyone know for sure if it's 48 or 32 gigs?
I put my 32Gb Sandisk in my Captivate today...and it mounted ok, all 21Gb of installed music and movies on that card seemed to work fine, based on my random sampling.
Keep in mind that it makes a "fake" /sd directory in the root of the internal /sdcard, and that points to the external storage when using an Android file explorer like Astro. And also keep in mind that there's a lot of apps that just don't know about this directory, so they can't "see" the external storage.
Windows sees two distinct storage devices, however, as it should be.
It has build in internal 16GB (2GB of that is reserved for apps) rest 14GB is data for whatever, Plus whatever Micro SDHC card you will add.
16+16 SD = 32GB
16+32 SD = 48GB
I have put 16GB micro SDHC to it (32GB cards are to expensive) connected to windows i get two drive letters one for Internal 14GB Data partition and one for my own 16GB card.
Hope that helped you.

Yep the ATT site spec sheet says 32gb is supported by the phone. And from all appearances it does indeed seem to work with the phone just fine.
Now the real question. Who is going to tear apart the phone and replace the internal SD card (since I assume it's literally an internal microSD card as seen in other devices) with a 32 GB card and see if it can handle 32+32 GB.

you seem like a willing volunteer
hmm if only i had two 32gb sd cards i would but they expensive
The real reason for replacing the internal SD card would be because it's so damn slow.
I agree with the slow part hence the mods to change the cache onto the external which speed up the phones.... any word on if the internal SD card is replaceable or not? If it is, that would be great news as its definately not as fast as a class 6 card and replacing it with one would definately speed things up.

Haha, exactly that. If I had the money for two 32 GB cards I'd try.
Edit Hmm... I saw a tear down of the Galaxy S and I didn't see an internal microSD card, so maybe it doesn't use a card like the Streak. Might be built in and unable to swap. Oh well!

[Q] SD card problems

Hello everyone.
I have this strange things going on with my microSD card.
Recentely i bought 32 GB card for my nexus one (using cyanogen mod 7)
When i use that card on my pc i can write all the files at 5 MB/s speed. Then i put it inside my phone and it doesn't mount. After few tries like 4 or 5 it mounts but after that some files are gone from sd card. Allways leaving like 30 GB of empty space. So if i write more it will delete some so it would be 30 GB. Then it mounts normally.
Ok now more then half of you will say that this is fake card or smth. But i downloaded H2testw program and checked my card. Everything is fine with it. The program wrote 32 GB of data and verified everything. Its just problems with phone reading SD card. Anyone can help me ?
Hmm........
So noone has any ideas ?
Check your phone for firmware updates that might raise it to the 32 gb ceiling. Maybe there is a Cyanogen 7 update that will take care of this for you. Also does your phone support SDHC cards?
SD Card Not reading correctly
If you haven't done so, you might want to check the specs of your device to ensure that it will accept 32GB. Some devices top out at 8 and 16GB respectively.

That, and I would upgrade to the latest nightly of CM7.
It is probably not "32gb" "Genuine" memory card.
I've purchased the memory card couple months back and
It says "16gb" when I put musics/videos in the memory card, it was unreadable and unplayable. I think it had actual memory of "2gb", so yes, I've been scammed by Chinese people =P.
I recommend you to check your actual memory by using this program
"H2testw"

what's wrong with my SD card

I bought this SD card from amazon
Sandisk Ultra 32GB Class 10 Micro SD Card with SD Adapter
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007JTKLEK/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=computers
formated by 4ext, has 1 EXT4 with 1GB/512MB, rest are FAT32. Installed VJ CM10.1 5.1 ROM, a2sd YNY. Nightmare came after phone booted, it's fast, but randomly "DEAD". "DEAD" mean phone totally freezed, no response at all, include all keys and screen. Have to remove the battery to restart....
I changed back to my old Class4 sd card. Did some test on this new class10 SD card, has no problem at all.
Is it because it's 32GB? Should I use a 8GB instead? Please help.
Hello!
I'm not sure, but i read alot about people getting trouble with a 32gb SD. Maybe do the partition again, something might have gone wrong.
Hope it helps,
- Rinse
Hello,
The first partition must be FAT32, than you can create the second partition in EXT4 format, I think.
Insert in pc, restore to defaults, format, then do as you please!
Huh, strange - I have same card, but 16GB.
In my tablet it is working without a problem. But in desire - I was trying for 5 days to make it working - without luck Random freezes, FC, phone dead (had to remove battery to power it on).
I tried diffrent roms - didn't work. Tried to format it (in 4ext), zero it (on pc with card reader), partition it again with diffrrent partition sizes (1.5GB, 1GB, 512MB) - nope.
Card is ok (as I said - in tablet it's working) - but my desire don't like it So I'm still on 2GB class -500 and thinking what to buy (8GB class 10 ? what manufacturer - adata, kingston? )
is 32gb working on htc desire?
SanDisk cards are known to cause the problems you described with the HTC Desire. I had a SanDisk 8 GB card too, and exactly the same problems... the solution is to not use SanDisk cards.

No it ain't...... My Desire lags as hell when I use the 32 GB class 10 Kingston card... Works on my QMobile Q3i.... Dunno how...
are you sure UHS-1 cards like these sandisk ultra are compatible with desire ?
Hi,
I'm using a sandisk card too, i do have a lot of problems with my HTC Desire.. can't use the phone anymore for daily use.
Freeze by phone calls, have to reboot 3 times before it's good and well started up.
Maybe SanDisk is the problem? Can someone confirm this? But why do they liver SanDisk by buying the phone then?
I have Samsung class 10 card and it works realy good.
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda app-developers app
Me too, using a Samsung class 10 16gb for a long time with int2ext and it really works fast and stable.

Hi there,
I have the same problems with SanDisk 4GB class 6. The trick is do not use app2sd.
I want also know if other cards like kingston do have the same problem.
Now i'm using VJ 4.1.2 with sd-card fat32 and no apps installed. At this moment there are no problems with my phone.!

I have the same card I picked up last fall and have the same problem. I'm going to try it out in a DSLR to see if it works there. My old card is a class 8 Adata (I think, might be Kingston) and started to randomly corrupt the fat partition, loosing all data and requiring a full reformat (which is why I got the Sandisk in the first place). So I can use a card that makes my phone completely useless as a phone or use a card that randomly looses all of my data. I should probably get a new card. On the upside I have become prolific at backing up my data. Also worth noting is that the Sandisk card is fast while it's runing.
I'm using SanDisk ultra 16gb uhs-1 for a couple of months now, didn't have any such trouble. could pvt version of desire be connected with that? Mine is pvt3
I'm also pvt3. I'm also rooted, s-off, use a2sd, no change with mounts2sd, and tried different ROMs (ICS, JB 4.1 & 4.2).
It seemed to only happen while using a heavy app if the phone was bogged down with multiple apps. To rule out a power supply voltage drop I replaced the battery. Although replacing my two year old battery was a good upgrade, it did not fix
the issue.
Everything I've tried points to a SD card issue so it is interesting to hear that it may only effect the 32GB UHS-1 cards. Samsung isn't as readily available around here so I may try the 16GB version but I'd prefer the upgrade to 32GB capacity. The card was phenomenally fast while the phone remained stable so I'd take speed over capacity. I just haven't seen mention of this problem with other 32GB cards.
Sent from my HTC Desire
If partitioning with 4ext recovery and cleaning the sd port in your phone (blow some compressed air into it, with phone powered off and let it regain normal temperature before powering back on) won't help, try sending the card back to SanDisk, in my country they give lifetime warranty for their cards. But first you gotta make sure your desire is intact hardware wise.
You might also test your card with tools like crystal disk mark and see if it gives up when strained.

Exactly that was my experience.
I got the SanDisk (Class 2, 4GB) which came along with the HTC Desire and bought a new SanDisk for mobile devices a few months ago (Class 6, 8GB). Both are working fine if I don't partitoning the cards/don't use A2SD - the phone won't freeze, etc.
If I partition these cards (method doesn't matter, tried CWM, GParted and another tool [don't know the name]) the phone is going to freeze randomly and on 2G network every time. My HTC Desire is PVT1. I rooted and flashed two PVT3 and one PVT4 devices as well and aligned their cards - no problems at all. No freezes, everything is running pretty good. So I have no idea.
The last months my phone barely run, it was freezing all the time. Even some ROMs which were running very great 2 years ago didn't run again (My boyfrriend said the problems occured because I was flashing it too often... But I can't believe that ).
I wasn't able to figure out what's wrong, so I decided to buy a HTC One.
I guess it's some hardware related issue?

Try following the steps HERE, make sure your partition is no bigger than 1.5 GB (I read somewhere it can cause issuess otherwise, I can't find it now though). I hope this helps!

SD card problems

Did a few Google play store app updates this afternoon. Then decided to restart the phone. The phone no longer recognizes my SD card. Any suggestions?
Never seen a device do this. Tried other micro SD cards I have and the phone recognizes them fine. Tried my 64GB card in the computer and it sees all the data on the card. Stumped on this?
I notice my other SD cards are formatted as FAT32 and my newest 64 GB card is an exFAT format, but it's read it fine up to today?
Have u tried formating it to fat32.
Did the problem go away?
Wouldn't format to fat32. I ended up moving all my data (files, videos, photos, app data, etc.) Over to my computer, then I reformatted the SD card and moved all my data back. Phone reads all the data fine now, but I had to reload all my apps that I had running of the SD card. What a PITA!

I had this problem with a couple of sandisk 64gb microsd's while I was out of town....the only solution I found was finally to use an adata one...and I'm now using a samsung 128gb. I tried formatting it on a linux pc and the phone...it did not like the sandisk's and would eventually lose them. I did have some success in only formatting the 64gb sandisks to 32gb but I may not have waited long enough for it to get corrupted as my adata one was available once I returned home.

I'm starting to have what may develop into the same problem with the Sandisk 64 gb sd card in my camera (not a phone) -- so maybe Sandisk is having some reliability problems?

It was very frustrating for me as the whole point of purchasing sandisk was based on their reliability. I was concerned about the samsung 128gb I picked up for $69.99 but it's worked like a champ and has fast read/write speeds.
Trouble with Samsung EVO 64GB sd card
My Samsung EVO 64GB only partially works with my 6045i. It shows as mounted but struggles to unmount. Takes 2 tries. When I try to have a 3rd party app use it for storage it doesn't show available even with show SD card enabled and use Android 5 Storage Application Framework (see the attached screenshot).
I grabbed two other microSD cards, one Sandisk and one Patriot (Class 4), both 32GB. Both worked flawlessly in my Idol 3.
So now my son's Galaxy S3 is using the 64GB Samsung card (he's running CyanideL) and it appears to operate correctly.
I'm ok with using a 32GB for now, but what other cards are folks using for either 64 or 128GB external storage?

I also own same Samsung 64 gb microsd card. However, i can get access from 3rd party apps, but suffer from random cuts while playing music, seems media app issue.
Problem was firmware not microSD issue.
I have both a Sandisk and Samsung 64gb and they both have had the same problem that every once and while the phone will reboot by itself and when it come back up I cannot access SD card. I have taken it out and I can see all the apps, music and videos are still there on my computer but in the phone nothing. I have to save, reformat and re-download apps.
Anyone have a 128GB card fully working?
So the 64gb Samsung EVO died in my son's S3, so I gave him the 32gb one that I was using and sprung for a 128gb SiliconPower card, rated at up to 75MBps.
I can get the stock camera to save photos to it but when I try Open Camera, it isn't seen. I have storage access framework enabled in OC. I get the attached screenshot. Note that I do have "show sd card" selected. I can toggle it on/off with no visible change.
Its not just Open Camera either. Another app, Solid Explorer, has the same issue if I try move any photo files through it, it asks me to grant permission, shows the same window as attached, and then can't complete because the OS isn't showing it as available.
Any thoughts? Is this a bug in 5.0.2?
thanks,

Mate 9 & Toshiba Exceria Class 10 Micro sd card Lag !?

Starting to have doubts about the Mate 9 now, among other software bugs I've noticed I've just found out today after using a micro sd card in this phone after an hour or 2 the phone starts to lag badly and slowdown ! card is fine in pc, Toshiba exceria class 10 128gb card, when I remove the sd card everything speeds up when I reboot, scrolling and performance lag like hell with an sd card, anyone confirm this is the case ? just wasted £40 on a card I can't use !
Does it have a lot of files on it? Could be it's still indexing all you files. Can take a long time before it's finished. I used to get that on other phones as well.
No it's a brand new card. incidently the card was formatted in exFat in windows, I tried a few times formatting by default and the phone would lag badly after an hour or 2 so I tried formatting the card in NTFS and fingers crossed it's lagging anymore, card been in all night with no slow downs, I have no idea if this is the case, but from my findings Android OS has problems with either large sd cards or the exFat file system choking it.

Why don't you do the format inside the phone and let the phone decide which file system to use.
I did try after the 2nd lag time and it still started to lag after a while, only when i formatted the card on my pc to NTFS and it's still not lagging.
When I use a new or used microsd card on my phone, I firstly format it using the phones storage manager. This usually fixes any problems with the card
I had the 200gb sd card in the phone with about 10gb of mp3 files and never notice any lag or slow down on the phone. Perhaps try another sd card to see if same problem.

Spoke too soon, I give up, it started to lag and slow down again after a couple of days, I don't know what's wrong but this is the 1st time I've tried an sd card with a phone and it will be my last, even when it did work the phone was pathetically slow at unlocking with a micro sd card in, thought I was using my N6p again ! now got a £40 128gb paperweight (and not a good one at that !)
