[Q] Android noob, Generic device, A few questions?

First let me introduce myself. The name is Darcy and I have been casually using linux and other *nix OS for about a decade. I am in school working on a programing degree ATM, and am a pretty quick study. Anyways, I without much research bought my wife a generic 7" tablet running android 1.6. I know what processor it has and Im hoping that leads me to a place to start. Ok so the device is a "Kasser Net'sGo" we didnt realize that its just a china pad with another companys name on it when we ordered it. So most of the apps dont run correctly, and in general the device sucks(on a software level the HW is fine although generic).
Anyways it apears that i can get into recovery mode to flash if i had no other choices. But since there are no official roms im hoping to find a build thats based on the same CPU or similar hardware to find a starting point. Its running the Marvell Aspen 800mhz chip and standard ddr2. Sadly thats all we have been able to find out about this device.
I have compiled custom builds for linux before, and i have now purchased a Gtab so i have a less garbage device to test some things on(i have allready flashed 2 different roms and fooled with a bunch of the settings). But we would realy like to do something with this other tablet. So if anyone can point me in the direction of some info on how to do android builds or a repository of chipset drivers and such that might help me that would be greatly appreciated.

Leader i7 tablet root + roms?

This is a nice little tablet and I was wondering if anyone had successfully ported a rom to it yet. From a bit of research, mainly here and here, rooting is defiantly possible with a little finesse.
Besides getting android market and google app bundle to work, it would be great to have a custom rom for this tablet. If anyone is willing to take this on, I'd be more than happy to donate and post a system dump.

Well I have also done some research. The leader i7 tablet goes by another name. IT is apparently some re boxed tablet... lost the name. But stay tuned as i will post it here when i find it. But the reason you wont find roms or tricks for this is because theres another name. Find its root hardware before rebranding and you will find roms

It is an "Infotmic" based MID. Particularly the x210 model.
Listed in the hardware information program i used.
Theoretically its internals are the same and it can be flashed to anything the infotmic x210 tablets have listed on various sites, as the only difference would be the external ports, case and etc for the rebranding.
This is good and makes sense because if you were to mass produce a cheap tablet, you would want the insides to be universal (it saves money) but modular enough to fit into different rebranding schemes. (easily resolder/connect additional or less IO ports on main board)
Spread the word on any forum you find, see if we cant and find some people smart enough to crack open these F***ers

[Q] Generic Chinese Clone Devices

Ok, so I'm pretty new to this whole Android thing, but I'm not daft and know a think or two about computers and software, so I'm not a complete 'noob'...
However, to spare me the drama of trawling through thousands of pages, I have a few quick concise questions, and would appreciate concise answers.
So I bought a generic handset, branded as an Onyx Dragon though AnTuTu benchmark app tells me its a Yusu... details and specs from Chinavision.com (search Onyx Dragon).
I initially bought it because I needed a new phone (been on a Moto V3 Razr for about 6 years!) so got this cos it was cheap and looked good. Runs Froyo on what I have found to be pretty **** hardware (MT6516, advertised as 416MHz but shown to be around 207MHz, but not sure if this is main CPU or radio core...) with not a lot of RAM. I installed an 8Gb SD card to save the apps and keep as much free internal space as possible, in case the OS supports disc memory (?). The wireless is good and screen works well, but the GPS, navigation and camera are rubbish, but they are not why I bought it; I have a decent camera and I can read a map. Its definitely 'entry level' so I'm not too bothered if I brick it.
Since I got it, and seeing the many cheap 'clones' out there, I'm keen to get into them a bit more and start developing. I already rooted it with z4root, BusyBox and Superuser all installed fine. ROM Manager is running but because I don't know the actual brand I'm not yet running ClockWorkMod (doesn't show up in the list). I'm keen to install Gingerbread or maybe even CyanogenMod 7, but cannot flash the ROM without CWM. Can anyone tell me what phone 'model' I should use for this particular handset?
I can't overclock the chipset, but have been looking at other clones to play with, such as htc Incredible G11i Pro clone from etotalk.com and 'CyberStar' 3G handset with MT6573 650MHz chipset (also from Chinavision).
Does anyone have any knowledge/experience with these clones? They look great and if they work as well as the budget model I have now then there is certainly potential. Sure, they may not be as good as a genuine Galaxy or Nexus, but then the price reflects that. However, as a cheap development platform you can't really go wrong! I'd like to see faster processors and more hardware mod ability such as clocking, just to see what is possible. Anyone tried ICS on one of these? I read elsewhere that if Froyo runs ok on a cheap device then GB should be better. My friend has GB 2.3.3 on a genuine $500 Galaxy S2 and I'd love to show him up with a rooted and clocked clone running ICS for a fraction of the price!!
Well, thats not as concise as I would like, but it covers pretty much everything. One last thing though, I cannot install ES File Explorer 1.6.1, it will download from Market and attempt to install but then fail. The latest version I have is the pre-installed 1.4.2.2. I've tried everything I can think of; downloading on my Mac and copying via USB to install from Astro making sure ES is not running, failed. Tried uninstalling ES with ROM Toolbox having root access and disabled AVG, failed. Tried to launch new version from package options, failed. I have installed ES Task Manager v1.2 but cannot use all the features as it says File Explorer needs to be updated, and needless to say updating it from the prompts failed as well... Any ideas? I'm thinking a flash to GB should include the latest version (or better alternative).

I don't think it's possible to run ICS on such a low spec'd device. This onyx dragon runs on a 416Mhz ARM9 processor with a 200 Mhz ARM7 GPU. Even the G1 that uses a 528Mhz ARM11 CPU can't run ICS well. I would suggest that you give up on theses crappy chineses devices. If you don't have money you can find a LG Optimus One for 100 bucks on ebay and it is A LOT better than any of these chinese crap phones

Does anyone know if ANY MediaTec chips can be?
Sure, I think running ICS is a bit optimistic, but I'd still like to give GB or C-Mod a go, providing I can get CWM installed. I'd like to compile myself and even think about refining my own version, perhaps slimming down a newer version to run on low performance hardware. What's this about a special cable needed with a 3.5mm jack?
And am I right in thinking Honeycomb was only for tablets, not phones...?

Yes you are right about honeycomb. As for the device. Without kernel source which will never be released due to copyright issues you may have a bit of trouble Modding it. CM only supports authentic devices and not clones as the hardware specs as you learned are faked and never true.

Not all the Chinese phones are crap there are a few very capable phones now entering the market and they are catching up the bigboys rapidly.
For more info & reviews on the latest Chinese phones check over here http://www.gizchina.com/category/phones/ Try to stick with the branded chinese phones such as Zopo, ZTE, Newman etc because there is at least some support where as the direct copy/clones have no support at all. If buying try to get the phone pre rooted because some of the Chinese phone are getting more difficult to root. I would look here http://www.etotalk.com/ if buying and select the MOD ROM $4.99 for most phones then the phone will come pre rooted with working playstore language etc. They do not 1 to 1 copys although some of the phones have more than a passing look of some of the more famous brands. I have used them a few times and they have not let me down be sure to email them first to ask about stock levels though.

[Q] SM-A300 recovery sources / board config request

I haven't found an appropriate forum to ask questions about the new Samsung Galaxy A3 SM-A300(FU), so I try it my luck here.
Chainfire already published its auto-root solution for the new device family, but it will take some time until a CWM or TWRP recovery will be available.
Chainfire's auto-root recovery works on my device, and I got the idea to use his working recovery to inject my own cached updates. Unfortunately, the recovery is locked by a certificate, it can't be used to run an own update script.
Is there a way to get the sources of chainfires recovery? It seems there is no possibility to contact chainfire directly.
I already tried to build my own CM-11 recovery but without success, can you give me at least some hints, how I get the needed board configuration? The common webtutorials seem to be outdated.

Hi fellow members,
after my girlfriend got her Samsung Galaxy A3 aka SM-A300, I thought I'd check the forums for more infos around the "usual stuff", root, recovery, roms, kernels... etc.
Much to my surprise there is not even a forum existing about it, though the device is already out, when for other devices the forums will be created way in advance of the market-launch.
I used to develop a very bad impression about Samsung handhelds over the last years, but I have to say I'm seriously impressed with this phone.
It has a great build quality (Finally, Samsung! Just took you 4/5 years... ) and is really snappy despite beeing only mid-range. TouchWiz seems to have matured about 10 years, it just feels good and right, gone are the days of a laggy TouchWiz which many people considered crapware (me included).
Also SW-support seems great. The phone was bought last week and came with a kernel owith build date of December 2014. After initial setup there was already a SW-update available, with a kernel dated of February 10th, 2015.
For me it is the biggest Android-Surprise since years. Samsung finally delivering a well-built phone that doesn't look or feel cheap and offering great SW-support. I'd like to temporarily borrow my girlfriends A300 and give her my HTC One M7 instead, I find it that nice, though, again, beeing of only mid-range specs.
Never thought it would be possible to receive a kernel via official channels from Samsung which build date is less than two weeks ago.

The design is very appealing for a midrange device and also compared to a S5mini.
In case there will be no future mini version of the upcoming Galaxy S6, this will be the only alternative to a screen oversized phone and will replace the mini series.

l have this device from January....l've been searching for cwm recovery or custom things but only got root by CF........seems like this phone its a ghost sometimes l have the impression that l am the one and only owner of this.....no forum no disgussions about it........ a big shame l guess........

'A' series really hasn't caught the development thread anywhere. Seems like the Samsung community is awaiting the S6 and has disregarded the launch of anything prior to it.

I also have the A3 I am looking hi and low for details about is as I I seem to be missing the USB Host option for my USB drives what has really F'ed me off as might be mid ranged but its a option I would of thought it would of had since its a sealed SD card slot

Lineage OS

I've been under the impression that the Relay wasn't about to get Nougat support, because it's graphics chip was too old to do Vulkan. I'd not be prone to trust that, since they seem to essentially be the same list. (echo-chamber?) However this site http://www.theandroidsoul.com/download-lineage-os/ with download links shows some supported Samsung devices of similar vintage to the Relay, perhaps even older.
I plan to look into this more, but in the meantime, does anyone else know anything?
I also plan to upload my Dec 3 and Dec 29 images from last year to my google drive, and will make those known here, once I have. They're not fully tested - I did a bit more explicit testing of the Dec 3 image, but I'm currently running the Dec 29 image.

Nice one! i've been running my relay on the stock OS for years. It's running slow as a dog. I really need to learn how to flash it with a nice new ROM.

That would be awesome if the Relay would get a second life.... i'm sooo close to drop it and buy the Nokia 6... hope HMD is living up to some customers expectations and is building a new communicator... love my old buddy E7.

By "E7" you mean the Nokia E7, right? Oh, I have often fantasized about a device in an E7 chassis but with new internals and running Android... except for the weight, that was my favourite form factor ever, keyboard or not

The leaks of the soon to be supported devices have the Relay on it. I can't believe it yet but why not? The Relay is the last Android QWERTY with decent hardware. As i stated before in another thread the S III is nearly identical to the Relay and the SoC is/was quite popular and built in many devices. The chances are high (to good to be true)

I've done a bit of looking since, and see that Lineage OS is advertising both Marshmallow and Nougat support. I suspect that means that the Relay is going to get Marshmallow, not Nougat. My impression is that Nougat required Vulkan graphics, and the Relay's graphics chip wasn't capable of that. Still, Marshmallow will be newer and presumably more secure than KitKat.

Even Marshmallow would be a welcome advance for the Relay venerable Relay.

I love my Relay so much that I want it keep it forever.
I bought a couple of extras, so I have some hardware for testing and I am eager to assist anyone who wishes to continue development for the Relay.

LineageOS released their list of officially supported devices and the Relay is not on it. I jumped onto the Lineage OS IRC channel to ask the devs what exactly they'd need to get the Relay officially supported. They said they need a working device tree + kernel. I emailed them the info they asked for and will let you guys know how it goes.
My Relay is my daily driver running CM11 and an more up to date rom would be amazing.

check out the development area here at xda, i'm sure there was a kernel over there. i do think that for someone like reventech from the validus project that task would be easy as a pie. don't they have the sources of cyanogenmod? the mirrors are down am i right? on that github should have been the source. i'm not able to build android yet. as an administrator my free time is quite limited

Would you be willing to send me the device tree, as well. Or perhaps since I have the sources sitting around, I presume there's a device tree there. I've read about the device tree on Phoronix, but have never really walked through one.

So the problem is that we need a new kernel, and need to map the old config to the new. OK, I always save my kernel configs, and one of my home machines goes clear back to 3.7 and up to the present, except that while I have configs for 3.16 and 3.20, I'm missing everything in between. Another system has five different 3.18 kernel configs, but only goes back to 3.16.3. I know these configs are not usable for Android, but I'm hoping they can give me an indication of what changed between the relevant levels. Scratch that, one the first machine mentioned, I have a 3.18.8 kernel config laying around as well as 3.10.0, 3.10.9, and 3.10.10 configs. Sadly, there are 1570 lines of diff between the two. Haven't looked at any details yet.
This looks like a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem. I'm going to presume that I can't just stuff a 3.18.10 kernel into my CM11 build and expect it to work - though that's the way Linus would like it to be, and the two kernels aren't that far apart.

EDIT: I just checked my source tree, and I appear to have the kernel source there. Actually there seem to be two sources, "samsung/d2" and "samsung/t1". Neither appears to have been compiled, because I only see .c and .h files in there, nor is there a .config file. Luckily I just checked my Relay, and found "/proc/config.gz". Oh, and here's the other oddity: "uname -a" returns "3.4.104-cyanogenmod-g61tc527e", not the expected 3.10. I may have to grab a Validus image, if I can still find one.

Attached is my: /cm_repo/kernel/samsung/d2/arch/arm/configs/cyanogen_apexq_defconfig for CM 11, which uses kernel 3.4.95 and android 4.4.4

any new news on any development for this device. i know that the s3 has gotten its linage os 14.1 rom and how come the relay whihc is based off of the s3 cant get a 14.1 rom. just wondering.

I know everyone hates a 'me too'. I have been a T699 user for about as long as it's been introduced. I also use a Stratosphere II and a Galaxy S5, but my Relay is still my favorite. I hope the developers at LineageOS will still consider supporting this phone. Thanks in advance.

Even though it's not my main phone anymore, I love pulling out my Relay now and then. In fact I'm using it as a music & podcast player since the SD card reader in my main phone died. The only thing that stops me from using it more is that the battery drops like a stone when it's got cellular signal/data going, to the point that it almost unusable day-to-day as a connected device. But it's got great standby life so I'm pretty sure it's the OS, not the battery. I would love it if a new OS actually fixed the battery drain...

It would be a dream to geht lineage OS in the relay 4g. Any advance Herr???
